A theoretical model for oxygen and substrate transport to tissues within skeletal muscle involving several interacting capillaries has been developed. It involves an elegant technique that discretizes the transport problem in a tissue with large number of capillaries. The technique can be equally applied to other heat transport problems with actual anatomical information. For oxygen, the role of myoglobin and the effect of axial diffusion have been considered. For the myoglobin model, myoglobin facilitates oxygen diffusion into tissue and can prevent hypoxia due to the interaction of the capillaries. The analysis yields a great deal of information about hypoxia, since as shown, a multicapillary model of the type presented here is needed to determine if the tissue is truly hypoxic. Because capillary length is large compared to capillary spacing, axial diffusion is a small perturbation to the solution without axial diffusion. The effect of axial diffusion is found using perturbation methods. For the substrate model, there can be large differences between the substrate concentration in the capillary and that in the tissue, depending on the permeability of the capillary endothelium.

Infection of HPAIV H5N1 has been described in experimentally challenged birds. However, pathogenicity of HPAIV H5N1, isolated in Egypt, has not been reported in naturally infected chickens and ducks, which could be unique due to distinct transmission routes and dosage of infection. Here we report a recent outbreak of HPAIV H5N1 in 2013, in commercial poultry farms in Sharkia Province, Egypt. The main symptoms were ecchymoses on the shanks and feet, cyanosis of the comb and wattles and subcutaneous edema of head and neck for chickens, and nervous signs (torticollis) for ducks. Within 48-72 hrs of the onset of illness, the average mortality rates were 22.8-30% and 28.5-40% in vaccinated chickens and non-vaccinated ducks, respectively. Tissue samples of chickens and ducks were collected for cross-section immunohistochemistry and realtime RT-PCR for specific viral RNA transcripts. Higher viral RNA transcripts were detected in tissues of chicken broilers and layers, including trachea, lung, spleen, intestine, brain, and serum, than those of ducks which have only viral RNA transcripts in trachea, lung, and liver tissues. Study of soils and their moisture content is one such area where Remote Sensing has wide applications. However, study of soils was not attractive until the advent of Hyper-spectral/Multi- spectral Imaging by satellite sensors, which provides reflectance information across the different contiguous spectral bands. The large amount of information in these bands served as features in the classification of soils. A spectral library of the different type of soils at different moisture levels serves as a reference for the purpose. However, a satellite sensor is designed to meet multiple criteria, which restricts the number of spectral bands that can be used and their resolution. Moreover, not all features contribute to classification. Hence, it becomes mandatory the optimal combination of the spectral bands is selected for a satisfactory classification of soils and the estimation of their moisture content. This work compares the performance of a hybrid algorithm, made by combining two sub-optimal methods, with the performances of the other classical algorithms for feature selection.

In this study, the effect of oxytocin preconditioning on EPCs under hypoxic injury was studied. oxytocin preconditioning is effective to improve the survival of EPCs under oxidative stress conditions by the activation of cyto-protective genes involved in different pathways.

Previous books addressing ultrasonic applications in food processing have been based on the process itself, so chapters have been divided in mass and heat transport, microbial inactivation, etc. This new book will propose a revolutionary overview of ultrasonic applications based on (in the authors’ opinion) the most relevant factor affecting the efficiency of ultrasound applications: the medium in which ultrasound is propagated. Depending on the medium, ultrasonic phenomena can be completely different, but it also affects the complexity of the ultrasonic generation, propagation and application. In addition, the effect of high intensity ultrasound on major components of food, such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids will be also covered, since this type of information has not been deeply studied in previous books. Other aspects related to the challenges of food industry to incorporate ultrasound devices will be also considered. This point is also very important since, in the last few years, researchers have made huge efforts to integrate fully automated and efficient ultrasound systems to the food production lines but, in some cases, it was not satisfactory. Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Medizin - Gynäkologie, Andrologie, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Reports of receptors for 1,25 (OH)2 D3 in most of the tissues of the body suggest that vitamin D may have a more fundamental and generalized role rather than merely in calcium homeostasis. Many clinical studies, including a few by the author, have indicated a beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on the fetal and neonatal growth. This experimental study was conducted to elucidate the effects of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on the skeletal and soft tissue growth in the rat pups. Results of this study have demonstrated that in the rat on normal intake of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus, administration of a limited supplement of vitamin D during pregnancy produced a beneficial effect on the fetal and neonatal growth. The increase in growth involved both skeletal and soft tissues. The accelerated growth was partly due to an improvement in lactational performance of the mother. In addition, certain evidences suggest an anabolic action of vitamin D on the offspring which begins during gestation and extends into neonatal period.
