Paul Nelson Narrative and Morality. A Theological Inquiry

6752 руб.
This book analyzes a rich and diverse body of philosophical and theological literature concerning the import of narrative for the understanding of morality. Nelson begins by examining the theses that to understand oneself, a tradition, and history as a whole, they must be understood in the context of a narrative.Recent philosophical writings on the relation of narrative to the moral concepts of social groups and individuals--- including Alasdair MacIntyre's proposal for the rehabilitation of an ethic of virtue shaped by narrative--- are explored. Issues discussed include the freedom of moral agents in relation to their narratives, the relation between narrative and universal moral rules, and the problem of relativism. Next, Nelson classifies theological uses of narrative as belonging to either a liberal-universalistic or postliberal-particularistic tradition and considers the implications of construing scripture as narrative for the problematic relation between scripture and ethics. The work of Stanley Hauerwas, the foremost narrativist in Christian ethics, is analyzed at length. Nelson argues that while narrative is a necessary focus, it does not exhaust the methodological agenda. Narrative is not, as its advocates sometimes suggest, a universal solvent for every theological problem and disagreement. An adequate Christian ethics must not lose sight of the universal, narrative-independent features of morality. Since the realm of the moral is an interweaving of narrative-d...

A comprehensive guide to empirical and theoretical research advances in culture and biology interplay Culture and biology are considered as two domains of equal importance and constant coevolution, although they have traditionally been studied in isolation. The Handbook of Culture and Biology is a comprehensive resource that focuses on theory and research in culture and biology interplay. This emerging field centers on how these two processes have evolved together, how culture, biology, and environment influence each other, and how they shape behavior, cognition, and development among humans and animals across multiple levels, types, timeframes, and domains of analysis. The text provides an overview of current empirical and theoretical advances in culture and biology interplay research through the work of some of the most influential scholars in the field. Harnessing insights from a range of disciplines (e.g., biology, neuroscience, primatology, psychology) and research methods (experiments, genetic epidemiology, naturalistic observations, neuroimaging), it explores diverse topics including animal culture, cultural genomics, and neurobiology of cultural experiences. The authors also advance the field by discussing key challenges and limitations in current research. The Handbook of Culture and Biology is an important resource that: Gathers related research areas into the single, cohesive field of culture and biology interplay Offers a unique and comprehensive collection from leading and influential scholars Contains information from a wide range of disciplines and research methods Introduces well-validated and coherently articulated conceptual frameworks Written for scholars in the field, this handbook brings together related areas of research and theory that have traditionally been disjointed into the single, cohesive field of culture and biology interplay.

In his groundbreaking new study, Permissible Narratives: The Promise of Latino/a Literature, Christopher González examines the difficulties Latina/o writers face in writing beyond the narrow expectations of U.S. readership in the stories they tell. González argues that a constrained conception of the possibilities of storytelling by and about Latinos diminishes the development and progression of narrative form. Through an examination of Latina/o writers against the a priori mode of engaging with nonethnic literature in the United States, González explores the limitations and challenges Latina/o authors have confronted via the shaping power of their narratives to reach a sustainable audience. Bringing together cultural critique, memory, narratology, cognition, and comprehension, González examines Latina/o authors-such as Oscar "Zeta" Acosta, Gloria Anzaldúa, Piri Thomas, Giannina Braschi, Gilbert Hernandez, Sandra Cisneros, and Junot Díaz-investigating how they successfully, and sometimes unsuccessfully, use the expansive canvas of narrative form to capture the imaginations of an open-minded readership. Permissible Narratives highlights both the inequitable accessibility of narrative devices and, crucially, the daring of Latina/o authors to nurture a readership to afford the same literary deference to them that is so often afforded to white, male, straight authors.

As my clients emerged from the global economic turmoil that began in 2008, I began to see what others didn't see. Something was standing in their way-usually the unwillingness or inability to make a critical decision. They thought they needed more-more education, more experience, more time, or more data. They had enough of these, but they lacked the confidence, courage, and optimism to make the tough calls. Through our work together, we learned that when leaders make good decisions, little else matters. When they refuse to make decisions, or show a pattern of making bad ones, nothing else matters. The most successful leaders realized they could no longer push growth. Instead, they had to remove barriers to success-obstacles they had erected themselves. The compelling stories and surprising research findings in this book focus on real people who actively sought professional improvement and personal development. Working together, we mapped out their journeys, identified roadblocks, recognized the wrong turns they had taken, and unlocked their decision-making potential-in some cases, more than doubling the size of their companies. Most of these stories illustrate how and why these leaders succeed, but others serve as warnings about what can happen when leaders refuse to decide.

From the time she could barely see over the space bar of her old manual typewriter, to writing her popular southern culture blog, Folkways Nowadays, author Audrey McDonald Atkins has been sharing her downhome stories and essays about life in the South. In They Call Me Orange Juice, Atkins provides a nostalgic, poignant, and often-hilarious look at growing up in a small South Alabama town and how that upbringing still influences her today. What does it feel like to be the only Episcopalian at a Baptist church? How do you entertain yourself on a two-hour car trip with a dead man? What do you do when your foundation garment goes rogue in the middle of a busy intersection? And what price did they pay for calling her orange juice?Atkins answers all these questions and more in her own unmistakable Southern style. She recounts stories about the men who congregated in the police station and the eccentric characters who worked on Main Street, shares words of wisdom from her Granny, and tells how one superstitious old man could literally make it rain even during the dry, dog days of summer. Each person still lives in Atkins memory frozen in time just as they were in the 70s, and its these ghosts of bygone days who shine through in They Call Me Orange Juice.

Culture is a product of the core values and business principles that executives espouse, the standards of what is ethically acceptable and what is not, the work practices and behaviours that define "how we do things around here", its approach to people management and style of operating, the "chemistry" and the "personality" that permeates its work environment, and the stories that get told over and over to illustrate and reinforce the company´s values, business principles, and traditions. A company´s culture is important because it influences the organization´s actions and approaches to conduct the business - in a very real sense, the culture is the company´s "operating system" or organizational DNA. All in all, culture as a concept is difficult to define and differs from company to company. The crafting of a strategy represents a managerial commitment to pursue a particular set of actions in growing the business, attracting and pleasing customers, competing successfully, conducting operations, and improving the company´s financial and market performance. G.W. Mullins Cherokee A Collection of American Indian Legends, Stories and Fables

Cherokee people like all other Native American Indian tribes possess a huge oral history. Before the time of written words, the history, customs and skills of a tribe were passed down through word-of-mouth and storytelling. Today, it is still an important part of Cherokee life. Elder tribe members use stories to teach morals and culture to children and others while keeping a rich history alive. Storytelling also allows people to get to know one another. The stories of the Cherokee people make us unique, but stories will be known only as long as they are told. When someone ceases to tell a story, part of our cultural knowledge is gone.Under old traditional law, these tales or stories were only told to fellow Cherokee or other Indian People. Many of these stories contained within this book were recorded by James Mooney who lived with the Cherokee in the 1800's. These include animal stories, creation myths, legends, and ghost stories, as well as, historical events such as the Trail of Tears. These stories have been passed from generation to generation and as with tradition, and have been left as much intact as possible. I learned many of these stories from my grandfather as a child, just as other Cherokee children did. As with tradition, these stories are now shared with you, to go forward and share with a future generation. In this collection, you will find such stories as Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine, What Became Of the Rabbit, The Rabbit Dines the Bear, The Rabbit Es...

How Do YOU Make School AMAZING for Students and Staff?School can be amazing. It can be a place where people of all ages, interests, and backgrounds enjoy learning together. And in this Lead Like a PIRATE Guide, author and elementary school principal Jay Billy explains that making school a place where students and staff want to be starts with culture. In Lead with Culture, Jay Billy shares personal stories and practical ideas for creating a sense of unity—even in the most diverse communities. You’ll learn how to . . . Inspire, encourage, and lead by example. Empower greatness in your teachers and staff. Build a culture of growth and learning. Cultivate an environment where love and kindness thrive. Honor diversity while fostering a strong community.Culture is what really matters in schools, and you have the power to shape it.Lead . . . with culture. “A book that welcomes the reader with open arms, you will feel a part of Jay’s community and come away inspired to make an impact.”—Nili Bartley, technology integration specialist, Hopkinton School District“Lead with Culture is a must-read for all who love education.”—Michael G. Luke 10:38 "Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house." This short story in the Book of Luke indicates that Martha, Mary, Lazarus, and Jesus were dear friends. It is possible they met at her house often. There is a middle eastern tradition of hospitality to strangers. So it is also possible travelers were accorded hospitality at Martha's as well. I chose Martha's house as the place where stories were shared and expanded those stories. It is exciting to flesh these stories out with characters that might have been there, telling their stories as well. These stories are fun and interesting to read and they make great dramas. Read and enjoy them, or create dramas from them. You will receive a perspective on the Bible that is both thrilling and personally enlightening.

All of those who are interested in contemporary Indonesian society, its organization and social and political articulation, sooner or later come to realize that in order to achieve any real depth of understanding for these phenomena it is first necessary to appreciate the enduring and frequently manifest residuum of traditional, pre-Western culture in Indonesia. Certainly this is true with respect to Java, whose culture has of course had an impact far beyond the shores of that island. In many cases these legacies of traditional culture help to explain current phenomena; in addition they make much more understandable the Javanese approach to religion-not only to Islam but also to Hinduism and Buddhism, which were introduced to the island earlier. For they have conditioned the way in which all outside ideas, Western and non-Western, have been received, and they help to account for the particular patterns of synthesis which are woven into the Javanese milieu. Most striking is the way in which persisting elements of old Javanese culture affect contemporary values. An ability to accommodate to and tolerate conflicting norms and ideas, the capacity to entertain in coexistence ideas and values that would seem incompatible in many Western settings, an unusual capacity for sympathetic toleration in social behavior-these are all attributes of contemporary Javanese society deriving from old Javanese culture. For the outsider, such elements are probably most easily approached and understo...

With elegant prose and unforgettable imagery, Rein brings to life characters who vibrate with the raw truth of human experience. Twenty-two chilling tales recommended by critics of supernatural fictionAnthologies of ghost stories are perennially popular. Sometimes the raison d’etre for a collection might be that the stories embrace a particular theme or that the fame or authority of the compiler imbues a special appeal or credibility. However, it occurred to the Leonaur editors that the principal concern of anyone buying such an anthology must surely be that the stories included will be of the highest order as examples of originally plotted fine writing, guaranteed to deliver the required thrills and chills. In consideration of how that outcome might best be achieved and offered to readers we decided to research as many lists of ‘the best ghost stories’ as we could find, compiled by critics, informed journalists and authorities of supernatural fiction, to determine which stories those people—based on as much consensus as possible—believed were, indeed, the finest ghostly tales written during the ‘golden age’ of the genre. Sometimes their lists included well-known stories that would be familiar to most ghost story enthusiasts, so these were removed from consideration. What remained were 42 stories which had received deservedly high praise and these we have divided between two Leonaur volumes. These collections are also available as Leonaur ‘Christmas Books’ since they make ideal gifts, but are here offered in the familiar Leonaur ‘Supernatural and Weird Fiction’ cover for both a general readership and s...

From Experience to Relationships. Reconstructing Ourselves in Education and Healthcare (PB)

The six writers in this book explore the contribution and the transferability of narrative inquiry fromcurriculum studies to daily life in education and in healthcare. They examine the interconnectivity ofreconstructed experience with the construction of disciplinary identity and knowledge. Thinking narratively, they write auto/biographically about relationships between teachers, students, nurses, colleagues, and/orpeople in their care. As narrative inquirers, they are curious how research moves forward professionalsituations in education and healthcare. The narrative plotlines of knowledge construction, curriculum building and identity formation thread throughthe chapters. In education and healthcare, the reconstructed experience of a teacher is shown to befoundational to curriculum content and processes. In nursing education, we see congruence between narrativeinquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 1995, 2000; Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1999) as a process that includes theteacher-researcher as co-participant; and, theorists, such as Watson (1999), include the nurse in the caringsituation as shapers of the experience of people in their care. As practitioner-researchers, teachers in educationand healthcare construct who they are and how they are in relationship in the context of social situations. Inquiry, not certainty (Dewey, 1929), is a lifestance that is formative for education.Practitioners in education and in healthcare will be interested in this book as a way to make me...

Stories by Catherine Bernard, François Fénelon, Louis de Mailly and Jean de Préchac. This volume includes three tales by Catherine Bernard (1662-1712), one of the originators of contes de fées, that deliberately subvert not merely their narrative strategy, but also their entire mythology; two enigmatic allegories of French history as seen through the prism of faerie by Jean de Préchac (1647-1720); four stories by François Fénelon (1651-1715), and The Illustrious Fays, a collection of tales by Chevalier de Mailly (1657-1724), which shows how the contes de fées quickly became suited to very different narrative purposes. The variety embraced by these stories is a striking illustration of the versatility of a format that seemed, at first, to be rather narrow. If some of stories seem more stereotyped and less ambitious, the spectrum they display is not lacking in color and variety, and the more flamboyant of them make significant additions to the imagery assembled by the core writers of the original school.
