There is significant positive correlation between parenting styles and self-concept. Girls of authoritative parents had most positive self-concept than girls from other parenting styles. Parenting styles was significantly correlated with academic performance with girls of authoritative parents having better performance than those from other parenting styles. Self-concept had positive significant correlation with academic performance with girls of positive self-concept superior in academic performance than those with neutral and negative self-concept. To improve on girls' self-concept parents should adapt authoritative styles. Improving academic performance for girls should consider how they are treated at home with emphasis on authoritative parenting. Academic performance can be enhanced by counselling girls with neutral and negative self-concepts.

The negative skewness of Self Concept and Emotional Intelligence scores implies that most of the B.Ed. students are having higher than average Self Concept and Emotional Intelligence. The means of sub components of Self Concept show that, Character Component scores of the sample are highest; with Intellectual Component scores slightly higher than average, Aesthetic and Social Component Scores slightly lower than average, but strikingly the scores of Emotional component are mostly negative. In spite of these variations the Self Concept Score distribution is showing negative skewness, thereby indicating that in shaping overall Self Concept Character Component Plays most significant role, followed by Intellectual, Social, Aesthetic and least by Emotional Component. Higher Overall Self Concept indicates that sample is having high Character-Self Concept, which may be due to their innately enhanced socio-cultural, moral and spiritual values.

In recent years, there has been much interest regarding motivation and its effect on achievement patterns. When students enjoy learning, they are more likely to show interest, value, and effort toward achievement, perform well, and persist in school (e.g., Vallerand et al., 1989). The purpose of the study is to develop and test a model, based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The model incorporates the assumption that intrinsic motivation positively affects math performance, whereas external regulation negatively affects math performance. It is assumed that math self-concept affects math performance both directly and indirectly through the mediating variable of intrinsic motivation. Finally, autonomy support can affect math performance both directly and indirectly through the mediator of math self-concept. Consistent with the predictions of SDT, when teachers support autonomy of students in the classroom, they provide a classroom climate that fosters math achievement. As teachers try to support students' competencies, they are more likely to foster students' self-perceptions of competence, which, in turn, promotes math achievement.

Awareness and attitude of livestock owners regarding Panchayati Raj system of democratic decentralisation was studied. The study was conducted in two block panchayats of Kerala state in India. Case-control design of survey research was followed. Self Help Group (SHG) members served as case and non-members, control. The background characteristics such as socio- economic and socio- psychological factors were almost uniform in both the groups. Generally, the awareness regarding Panchayati Raj and attitude towards it were all less than satisfactory. Even so, SHG members and non-members differed significantly on all accounts i.e., SHG-members had significantly higher level of awareness and a more favourable attitude towards the system.Since democratic decentralisation is a new concept, the book may serve as a reference material in the hands of students and researchers in the field of social sciences.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Work, Business, Organisational and Economic Psychology, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Psychologie), language: English, abstract: Within the scope of positive psychology one main construct is optimal experience or flow. Flow is a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. Although Maslow introduced the term `positive psychology` more than 70 years ago the research in this field is still sparse and conceptualizations as well as implications of flow are fragmentary and inconsistent. Therefore the present study among 117 white-collar employees investigates the relationships between flow at work, job resources (feedback, task variety, social support, autonomy and self-efficacy) and organizational outcomes (subjective well-being, work performance and health). In this concept it was assumed that resources and flow are predictors of organizational outcomes and that resources are also predictors of flow. Additionally, flow was studied as a mediator of the resources-outcomes relationship. Subjects completed online and paper-pencil-surveys including resources, flow and organizational outcomes. Analyses revealed that higher levels of job resources lead to higher levels of flow at work, as well as predicting well-being and work performance. In addition, employees who report frequent flow experience also report high levels of well-being and work performance. Furthermore, flow...

This book is a product of research which applied three experts’ instructional models of analogy, problem solving and concept mapping in teaching secondary school physics students in Lagos, Nigeria. Also, the quantitative ability and cognitive styles of the students were considered. The wave concept was selected due to its difficult nature arising from the fact that it operates as a function of two variables (position and time) unlike other concepts at this level. Over ten different models (analogies, authentic problems, riddles and metaphors) generated by the author were applied. The results proved model based instructional strategies of analogy, problem solving and concept mapping to have the potency to improve achievement in physics. It also has implication for consideration of the cognitive styles of learners while designing instruction. However, there were no significant effects produced by these instructional models on students' attitude to physics when taken singly. The implications of these results are exhaustively discussed with regards to physics curriculum planning, implementation, evaluation and textbook writing so as to improve achievement and attitude to physics.

But the influence of personal characteristics of the teacher had not been investigated. Guided by Trait Theory of Personality, the study used a cross sectional research design, on a stratified sample of 350 students and 16 teachers in 10 secondary schools in Borama District, in February of 2014. The study found teacher gender (t [14] = -.276, p = .785), and teacher qualification (F [1, 14] = .578, p = .568) had no significant influence on students' performance. But teacher experience (F [1, 14] = 4.375, p = .022), and self-efficacy (F [1, 14] = 10.790, p = .000) had a significant influence on students' performance. The study concluded that teacher's personal characteristics influence performance of students in mathematics. The study recommends that MoEHS conduct awareness education to change the attitude that mathematics is a male friendly subject; and that an experimental study be done to determine the actual effect of teachers' personal characteristics on the performance of students.

This study investigated the effect of perceived self-efficacy on low and high achieving students, year level, age and gender in mathematics. The participants in the study were students aged 13-15 years in a secondary school in London. The research investigates how self-efficacy influences mathematics performance in academic settings. The distinctiveness of self-efficacy against other expectancy constructs is highlighted, followed by an exposition of the existing self-efficacy research in mathematics. Findings indicate that highly efficacious students in mathematics perform well than students with low self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is depicted as having a significant effect on mathematics performance and the year level. The study depicts that self-efficacy does not significantly influence age and gender. The measures used in the mathematics questionnaire substantiate the view that particularized or task specific measures of self-efficacy can be combined with the global measures in the explanation and prediction of academic outcomes.

For the students, the teachers are the faces and images of excellence. Thus, what makes teachers exemplary of excellence as perceived by students? If students perceive their teacher as excellent and effective, does this perception impact on their academic performance? In the literature, there exists a consensus of what is an effective teacher. Studies focus on the qualities and traits of this teacher. Among these qualities, which one is most preferred by students? Do students with various academic performance differ in their perception and preference of an effective teacher? Are these qualities related to the academic performance of the students? This study shows that there is a ranking of qualities of an effective that the students with different academic performance prefer. And there is no relation between the perception of an effective and students' academic performance.

Adolescents are often susceptible to the opinions of peers, such as their friends, activity partners and co-workers. In two studies, we test an integrative model of adolescent susceptibility to peer influence that includes parenting style as driver, the adolescent self-concept as mediator, and the cultural context as moderator of the level of susceptibility. The overarching finding in our studies is that responsive parenting reduces susceptibility by influencing the adolescent self-concept, while psychologically controlling parenting increases susceptibility without influencing the adolescent self-concept. We also show that culture can modify these effects of parenting such that, within collectivist eastern cultures, psychological control influences susceptibility to peer influence through changes in adolescents' self-concept.

There are a number of transitions and crises periods in the life span of every individual and adolescence represents one of these periods where great strain and sometimes confusion results. In the Winneba municipality in Ghana for instance, it has been noted that majority of the students in the senior high schools, come from different regions who attend school in this municipality. As a result, it has been noted that they spend most of their time with their peers than with their parents; since they are resident students. In view of that it is assumed their peers have great influence on their behaviours. It is upon this note that the researcher would like to investigate into peer support mediating adolescents' psychosocial problems and their self-concept. This analysis should help counsellors to be aware of the prevailing psychosocial problems of adolescents in the municipality and thereby find ways of improving their services to assist them in their schools. It should help create the awareness of parents, teachers and guidance and counselling coordinators about the extent to which the peer group influence the adolescents' self-concept and also the need to develop the self-concept.

It is now possible to enter a chemistry degree course at many UK universities without any formal maths training beyond age 16. Addressing this deficiency requires students to take additional mathematics training when entering university, yet the relevance of maths to chemistry is often poorly appreciated by chemistry students. In addition, many service courses are either too abstract, or aimed at physicists and engineers, for students of chemistry, who are not inclined to study mathematical techniques per se and do not make the connection between the maths they are taught and the chemistry they want to study. Based on the successful at a Glance approach, with integrated double page presentations explaining the mathematics required by undergraduate students of chemistry, set in context by detailed chemical examples, this book will be indispensable to all students of chemistry. By bringing the material together in this way the student is shown how to apply the maths and how it relates to familiar concepts in chemistry. By including problems (with answers) on each presentation, the student is encouraged to practice both the mathematical manipulations and the application to problems in chemistry. More detailed chemical problems at the end of each topic illustrate the range of chemistry to which the maths is relevant and help the student acquire sufficient confidence to apply it when necessary.

Satisfaction research over the past demonstrates that high satisfaction scores, while a measure of corporate performance on a set of important criteria, do not adequately explain the composition of preference formation and therefore often serve as insufficient predictors of sustained preference or what is normally referred to as customer loyalty. Loyalty as a concept has also shown itself to be difficult to define. Like beauty, loyalty is truly in the eye of the beholder. We understand there are different types and degrees of loyalty and some of these are not appropriate in describing the relationship between a consumer and a company.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: 4.8, University of Colombo (UNICA), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to illustrate some of the effects of negative emotional traits in the teaching performance of two English seven and eight grade teachers with forty students each in a public school in Suba, Bogotá. The work focused on three negative emotional traits (frustration, anxiety and lack of creativity) that are the core of a negative class environment. The research of Ferguson, Frost& Hall (2012) explores some of the physical effects such as increased blood pressure, anger, headaches, and some psychological effects such as anxiety, nervousness, tension, frustration and panic, that some teachers might experience when they are exposed to situations of high amount of stress. Furthermore, those effects can affect teacher performance when teaching classes. Two case studies described the situations that affect teachers' performance, how teachers reacted when experiencing those situations and what the outcomes are in the classroom environment. The main situations found during the study are related with students' behavior, students' attitude about class activities, school demands regarding class structure and the amount of English use during classes.

Discipline problems, limited resources, crowded classrooms. Teachers face many issues each day that can wear down their love of education. How can they stay focused and energized day in and day out?In Totally Positive Teaching, Joseph Ciaccio shares an approach that transformed him from a burned-out veteran teacher struggling joylessly through each day to a professional who has fun with his students, guiding them to success while enjoying the teaching process. The conviction that people can adopt a new attitude is at the heart of Ciaccio's Totally Positive Approach. When teachers enter the classroom with an upbeat attitude supported by constructive teaching techniques, they can build trusting partnerships with students. Ciaccio describes five techniques for creating a daily positive learning experience that nurtures student achievement:• Devise activities to meet the mutual needs of student and teacher.• Change personal counterproductive feelings.• Respond to behavior problems with self-discipline.• Help underachievers become self-motivated.• Develop instructional strategies to keep students engaged.Ciaccio provides plenty of examples to illustrate how these techniques actually work in the classroom. He also includes dozens of strategies and tips for introducing the Totally Positive Approach and making it take hold in your own work. When teachers use the Totally Positive Approach, students gain confidence, take control of their lives, and feel that they belong. Self-regulated learning strategies have recently received a remarkable attention by researchers. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and students' reading comprehension ability as well as their language proficiency. To do so, 115 university students majoring in TEFL were selected. First, a TOEFL test was given to the participants so as to determine their language proficiency as well as reading comprehension ability. Then, they were asked to fill out self-regulated learning strategies questionnaire. In order to analyze the data obtained, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were conducted. The results of data analyses revealed that there is a significant relationship between the students’ use of self-regulated learning strategies and their reading comprehension ability. Also, a significant correlation between the students’ use of self-regulated learning strategies and their language proficiency was found. Finally, the pedagogical message of this study is that teachers and students should incorporate self-regulated learning strategies into their teaching and learning process.

Provides the basics of spacecraft orbital dynamics plus attitude dynamics and control, using vectrix notation Spacecraft Dynamics and Control: An Introduction presents the fundamentals of classical control in the context of spacecraft attitude control. This approach is particularly beneficial for the training of students in both of the subjects of classical control as well as its application to spacecraft attitude control. By using a physical system (a spacecraft) that the reader can visualize (rather than arbitrary transfer functions), it is easier to grasp the motivation for why topics in control theory are important, as well as the theory behind them. The entire treatment of both orbital and attitude dynamics makes use of vectrix notation, which is a tool that allows the user to write down any vector equation of motion without consideration of a reference frame. This is particularly suited to the treatment of multiple reference frames. Vectrix notation also makes a very clear distinction between a physical vector and its coordinate representation in a reference frame. This is very important in spacecraft dynamics and control problems, where often multiple coordinate representations are used (in different reference frames) for the same physical vector. Provides an accessible, practical aid for teaching and self-study with a layout enabling a fundamental understanding of the subject Fills a gap in the existing literature by providing an analytical toolbox offering the reader a lasting, rigorous methodology for approaching vector mechanics, a key element vital to new graduates and practicing engineers alike Delivers an outstanding resource for aerospace engineering students, and all those involved in the technical aspects of design and engineering in the space sector Contains numerous illustrations to accompany the written text. Problems are included to apply and extend the material in each chapter Essential reading for graduate level aerospace engineering students, aerospace professionals, researchers and engineers.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, Atlantic International University, language: English, abstract: The content of this paper discusses three separate, yet in my opinion, interlinked aspects of social development. We begin with the concept of social identity, the development of one's identity almost from birth, through adolescence into adulthood. The identity as a result of our interactions with those around us creates our self-concept and ultimately our self-esteem. Our gender and gender role development adds to our concept of self and determines our concept of who we are in relation to others and the world. As we grow our interactions with those around us, commencing with the family unit gives credence to our understanding of our self-value. We learn about people's perceptions of us through their dealings with us. As such, our self-esteem has the potential to promote or hinder healthy relationship development as we move through life from the core family relationships to our peer, significant other and spousal relationships. The success or failure of our relationships can be linked to our self-esteem. We learn about our self-perception, how others perceive us and what kind of responses we expect from those we come into contact with.Dealing with our self-esteem as we move through life, suggests that interactions are tainted or coloured by a positive or negative self-concept respectively. We will see that perception is a key d...

This study was designed to investigate factors that influence girls' enrollment and performance in physics in five (28%) 'traditional' national schools in Kenya. Meaningful learning of physics is the hallmark of a technologically competent workforce in science, technology and engineering. However, there is a lower performance index and enrollment of girls opting to study physics at KCSE. The factors of attitudes of students, learners' ability and teacher characteristics were found to affect enrollment and performance of girls in physics. The study showed students' attitude, learner's ability and teacher characteristics, affected girls' enrollment and performance in physics in national schools. However, the girls had better positive attitudes and performance in learner abilities in physics than the boys. The results also showed that teachers of physics in girls' national schools are effective and efficient in instructional designs. The findings of this study may be used to foster positive attitudes towards physics. The methods of physics instruction among girls may also be impacted by constructivism approaches as the results show strong preference to physics practical work.

Bro, J. Motivational Attitude: This is a study of the Effects of Motivational Principles on Students’ Attitudes towards Mathematics. The research question addressed is, how does purposefully crafting Geometry lessons using principles of motivation and engagement affect high school students’ attitudes towards mathematics? Fennema and Sherman’s validated questionnaires are used as a means to measure attitude, confidence, usefulness, anxiety, significant other perceptions, and effectance (motivation to master) in mathematics. Strategies and noted principles to increase motivation and engagement are used as a means to improve student attitudes towards mathematics. Orhun (2007) cites that teachers who recognize student differences in methods of learning will have a greater chance to connect the mathematics to their students in various ways, thus increasing their students’ motivation to learn the subject. Similarly, students who understand the styles with which they learn best are more likely to approach learning with a better attitude and, in turn, become a stronger student.
