Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Touristik / Tourismus, Note: 1, Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (Institut für Landschaftsentwicklung, Erholungs- und Naturschutzplanung (ILEN)), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This bachelor thesis is about the European Green Belt. The thesis opens with an introduction to the history of the Green Belt, which includes a history of the Iron Curtain and its break-up. This is followed by a general survey of the different sections of the European Green Belt, which are the Fennoscandian, Central European and South Eastern-European sections. The main issue of concern here is the relationship between tourism and nature. It turns out that unpolluted and fully functioning nature are the basis for all different kinds of nature tourism. However, "overusing" nature can lead to its destruction, by literally "loving it to death". For this reason, it is necessary to act in sustainable ways to conserve the nature. Forms of sustainable tourism, such as ecotourism, have therefore been developed. This thesis examines the different forms of ecotourism and discusses the potential impacts of nature- based tourism.Nevertheless, real sustainable tourism is said to be useful for regional development, because it can generate income locally and strengthen regional development. Moreover, it can help increase the acceptance of practices that lead to nature protection and helps to fund future protection activities. However, there are a number of is...

Umran Aslan Perspectives of Tourism Development in Algeria

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 4,0, University of Wroclaw (Earth Science and Environmental Management), course: Tourism, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to make Algeria available as an important place in sustainable tourism in the future. The study addresses Algeria in general and explains what regional development should be made possible. Concepts of management are explained, leading to a new path of tourism development that should be taken in Algeria. Algeria is a very rich country in terms of tourism, but it has little knowledge about using its resources. Algeria's coastal and saharan desert have excellent tourism potential. By making long-term plans, they can become an indispensable destination for sustainable tourism. Looking at the old history of Algeria, it is clear that this is a country that has hosted many civilizations. It is also the largest country of African in terms of surface area, and it takes a lot of time to be safe because of its size. In the neighboring countries Morocco and Tunisia, tourism is already growing greatly. However, there are few in Algeria to work in the name of tourism. In this thesis, it is explained how management should be handled in order to increase tourism investments. Finally, in a survey study conducted in Algiers city, the opinion of local inhabitants on tourism development of Algeria is also made clear.

The need to find new approaches to the development of cities is becoming increasingly urgent in this age of continuing population growth, demographic transition, climate change, fossil fuel peak and biodiversity losses. Restoring ecosystem services and promoting biodiversity is essential to sustainable development – even in the built environment. Ecosystem Services come to Town: greening cities by working with nature demonstrates how to make urban environments greener. It starts by explaining how, by mimicking nature and deliberately creating habitats to provide ecosystem services, cities can become more efficient and more pleasant to live in. The history of cities and city planning is covered with the impacts of industrial urban development described, as well as the contemporary concerns of biodiversity loss, peak oil and climate change. The later sections offer solutions to the challenges of sustainable urban development by describing and explaining a whole range of approaches and interventions, beginning at the regional scale with strategic green infrastructure, looking at districts and precincts, with trees, parks and rain gardens and ending with single buildings, including with green roofs and living walls. Technical enough to be valuable to practitioners but still readable and inspirational, this guide demonstrates to town planners, urban designers, architects, engineers, landscape architects how to make cities more liveable.

Allie-Nieftagodien Shariefa Pro-Poor Tourism in Alexandra Since 1994

Tourism has increasingly been viewed as an important means to challenge poverty, especially in developing countries. Since the beginning of democracy in South Africa, the African National Congress(ANC) government has emphasised the importance of overcoming poverty, and identified tourism as an important intervention in pursuit of this objective. This study assesses "pro-poor" tourism initiatives in Alexandra Township since 1994, with particular focus on the arts and crafts at St Michael's Church and SA Jewel. It will investigate whether projects similar to bead craft, initiated at the same time with the same objectives have benefited the residents of Alexandra. Finally, the study will consider if tourism initiatives being implemented in Alexandra conform to 'sustainable development' objectives. The research reviews the literature on Tourism Development domestically and Local Economic Development. Furthermore the report extends to literature reviews specifically in Sustainable Tourism and Pro-Poor Tourism, its definitions and its examples in the tourism industry. It examines the various arguments for tourism development and alleviating poverty through these initiatives.

Energy and Global Climate Change: Bridging the Sustainable Development Divide focuses attention on two urgent global development challenges faced by the UN and its member states: access to sustainable energy for all, and global climate change. This book presents compelling evidence about an often neglected aspect of the energy-climate change-development nexus faced by millions of poor: problems caused by the use of inefficient and polluting energy sources, and the lack of access to sustainable energy services. Based on a detailed examination of major UN global climate change and sustainable development negotiated outcomes over the course of several decades, this book argues in a powerful and insightful manner that intergovernmental negotiated outcomes aimed at solving the climate change and energy access challenges have been restricted by being placed in different negotiating silos. This “siloization” or compartmentalization has resulted in separate tracks of negotiated outcomes on two inextricably linked global development challenges; and, has thereby hindered prospects for integrated action. This book points out that the existence of these two silos is especially hard to ignore in light of the urgent UN-led quest for an integrated and universal post-2015 development agenda anticipated to be anchored by new sustainable development goals on energy access and climate change. By addressing the heavy reliance on inefficient and polluting energy services which result in indoor air pollution and short lived climate pollutants that tragically impact millions of poor people, this book highlights the unique importance of integrated action on the energy-poverty-climate change nexus in the UN’s post-2015 development era.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1.3, Heilbronn University, language: English, abstract: Often referred to as the 'smokeless industry', tourism has become one of the fastest growing, most dynamic sectors of economic growth in the world. Tourism is a key sector in many developing countries, which show potential. However, over-reliance on tourism, especially mass tourism carries significant risks to tourism-dependent economies. As a result, many developing countries have since espoused the principle of sustainability in shaping their tourism policies. However, few of them have been able to convert this into concrete action owing to the short-term economic interests to which, all too often, priority is given, to the detriment of protecting social and environmental assets. The purpose of this paper is to create and formulate clear, firm and equitable guidelines in a tourism policy concept that is set in the context of sustainable development and aims further to raise the competitive position of a destination. Theory will be demonstrated in practical terms in the case of the Caribbean tourism destination, the Dominican Republic.

The literature review builds the theoretical framework of sustainable development by examining the drivers for sustainability, triple bottom line approach, shareholder theory, stakeholder theory, and stakeholder groups based on secondary data. The case study methodology rely-ing on public company resources is used to analyse, evaluate, and compare the spe-cific industry drivers for sustainability and the companies' approaches of sustainable development. Based on the theoretical framework, the analysis and discussion of the prioritised issues, approaches, results revealed that the two analysed approaches are successfully in promoting sustainability. Furthermore it was revealed that in-creased economic, environmental, and social value is increasingly created by taking stakeholder claims into account and vertically implementing sustainable development in the upstream and downstream of the value chain. Therefore, it was identified that Kraft Foods' approach is marginal less successful due to its focus on indirect coll...

Dirk König Linking agriculture to tourism in Sierra Leone - a preliminary research

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Tourism, grade: 2,2, University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde, 200 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Tourism has been acknowledged by practitioners and governments to be a tool for economic development, not exclusively but mainly, of less developed countries with few other competitive sectors and, therefore, for boosting their domestic economy as well as reducing the endemic poverty in Africa. This paradigm is difficult to apply when the tourism industry is not viable in a country and the great majority of tourism establishments have insufficient numbers of clients to make profit. In this respect, some findings indicate that, tourism and local small-scale agriculture (World Bank, 2006b) have been widely neglected by the Government of Sierra Leone, all efforts having been directed onto the development of the mining sector. In fact, while production and marketing constraints can be solved as stated in the wider agriculture literature, due to the nature of Sierra Leone as a "fragile state", findings suggest that the lack of commitment and attitude of the Government to more responsible tourism forms or approaches will hamper any attempt to foster strategic alliances between the poor agriculture sector and tourism industry or other lucrative market-segments. Although the recent tourism development in Sierra Leone addresses the important issue of preserving the few available tourist attractions, a...

Choi Agnes Impact of CEPA on Developing Macau as a Major MICE Tourism Destination

Recently, Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism development is one of the tourism diversifying strategy of Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO). In October 2009, the implementation of Mainland China and Macau Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) limited the restriction of trading in MICE services between the two places. Taking this great opportunity, the development of MICE tourism in Macau benefits from injection of foreign investments and growing awareness on the potential of MICE industry. However, previous researchers commented that the strong gaming image of Macau can be a disadvantage and the effectiveness of MGTO still needs to be improved. Other than the tourism aspects, regional collaboration with nearby Chinese provinces is crucial in building and maintaining long-term relationships. To review on the current state of MICE tourism development, the opinions of 36 experts from different sectors were collected to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of Macau. The results reveal that most of the respondents agree on the viewpoints of the criteria and aspects suggested by previous authors are applicable in Macau

Sophia von Petersdorff The Purpose of Business. Where Value meets Strategic Sustainable Development

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,6, Blekinge Institute of Technology (Strategic Sustainability), language: English, abstract: The current global economic paradigm, centred on growth, is a significant barrier in the transition towards a sustainable society. Business-as-Usual companies operating within this paradigm are perceived to prosper at the expense of society and environment which is not viable on a finite planet. The need to rethink the purpose of business is inevitable as maximising shareholder value, has been deemed insufficient to create a sustainable society. This study aimed to explore: how business models can be used to create value that supports Strategic Sustainable Development. Previous research proposed that the concept of Business Models for Sustainability helps business place sustainability at the core of all consideration. A qualitative research was chosen for which we employed the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development and combined a literature review with an investigation of three expert groups to answer our research question. Our findings showed that, compared to other value forms, system value is the most appropriate concept for businesses striving towards sustainable development. Based on our findings, six themes emerged that businesses need to address to accelerate the speed of change towards sustainability. Betz Frederick Modeling Methodology For Sustainable Development

This is a monograph on modeling methodology - models focused on policies for sustainable development. Sustainable policies are important because the patterns of the historical development of the world's industrial, commercial, and economic systems of contemporary society are 'not projectable' - simply not viable over the future. We examine a new concept of societal models, called 'model ontology'. We will see how this can be used to construct 'information architectures' for information systems centered upon specific policy issues. An information-system approach based upon societal modeling is the way models can be useful and important to policy making

Camaro West Volunteer Tourism. Effective Development Tool. Or Feel Good Travel.

As a branch of alternative tourism, volunteer tourism or 'voluntourism' is responsible for introducing vacationers to parts of developing countries not usually seen through traditional forms of tourism. Broadly defined, voluntourism consists of "Those tourists who, for various reasons, volunteer in an organized way to undertake holidays that might involve aiding or alleviating the material poverty in some groups in society...". These travellers interact with local and community development organizations in ways said to capacitate the organizations and contribute to development as a whole. This raises important questions about the implications of inserting unskilled and unprepared volunteers into what is said to be development work. Drawing on the development framework set out by various community development theories, and using a case study of American volunteer tourist groups working in Guatemala; this manuscript examines claims that short-term, unskilled volunteers can engage in local development work and unpacks many of the issues associated with this new trend.

Buildings consume 40% of our planet’s materials and 30% of its energy. Their construction uses up to three million tonnes of raw materials a year and generates 20% of the soild waste stream. If we want to survive our urban future, there is no option but to build in ways which improve the health of ecosystems. Understanding the concept of ecological sustainability and translating it into practice as sustainable development is a key challenge for today’s built environment professionals. The skill and vision of those who shape our cities and homes is vital to achieving sustainable solutions to the many environmental, economic and social problems we face on a local, national and global scale. Peter Graham offers here a holistic view of ecologically sustainable building by drawing on established areas of knowledge, demonstrating their relevance to the environmentally-conscious building professional and putting the process, product and impact of building into context. Case studies illustrate how sustainable principles have been applied successfully and discussion topics are offered to stimulate thought. Building Ecology will help planners, surveyors, designers and builders to incorporate sustainability into their everyday practice by: · showing which styles of building are ecologically sustainable · providing fundamental knowledge for making decisions using the principles of ecologically sustainable building · explaining a complex subject in a clear, balanced way. Building Ecology sets out the current scientific view of how nature works and how buildings link with and affect nature. It provides fundamental knowledge for building in harmony with nature and keeping Earth’s life-supporting ecosystems healthy.

Transport systems have to meet the mobility needs of people and commodities on all scales, from the local to the global level. Concerns about the energy, fumes and sound emissions produced, and about the safety, service quality, intelligence and lifecycle of the systems, etc. can all be included in a systemic approach. This approach can contribute to the development of sustainable solutions, for individual vehicles as well as for transport systems. Derived from an approach combining the social and physical sciences, these solutions result from the integration of physical objects, services and organizational processes, which involve several actors. Their harmonious organization contributes to the development of more virtuous transport systems for the future of urban and inter-urban mobility.
