Mathematics and Science education have both grown in fertile directions indifferent geographic regions. Yet, the mainstream discourse in international handbooks does not lend voice todevelopments in cognition, curriculum, teacher development, assessment, policy and implementation ofmathematics and science in many countries. Paradoxically, in spite of advances in information technology andthe "flat earth" syndrome, old distinctions and biases between different groups of researcher's persist. In additionlimited accessibility to conferences and journals also contribute to this problem. The International Sourcebooks in Mathematics and Science Education focus on under-represented regions of theworld and provides a platform for researchers to showcase their research anddevelopment in areas within mathematics and science education. The First Sourcebook on Asian Research in Mathematics Education: China,Korea, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and India provides the first synthesizedtreatment of mathematics education that has both developed and is nowprominently emerging in the Asian and South Asian world. After the fast development of Japan after World War II, the so called tiger countries , South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, highlight from the 60s on with high rates of economic growth and later the second generation of tiger countries also (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesian and Thailand). And now China!A country of 9.5 Million square mile can't growth on whole with the same rate. The effect is an increase in the disparity of regional incomes and still increase with the boost at the rates of economic growth. But what are the reasons for the regional differences in economic growth and the regional disparity. One reason could be the preferential policies in the eastern regions. These policies are specially prepared to attract foreign companies. A second reason, that is current discuss in the scientific world, could the geographical characteristics. A volume in Cognition, Equity, & Society: International PerspectivesSeries Editors: Bharath Sriraman, University of Montanaand Lyn English, Queensland University of TechnologyMathematics is traditionally seen as the most neutral of disciplines, the furthest removed from the argumentsand controversy of politics and social life. However, critical mathematics challenges these assumptions andactively attacks the idea that mathematics is pure, objective, and value‐neutral. It argues that history, society, and politics have shaped mathematics-not only through its applications and uses but also through molding its concepts, methods, and evenmathematical truth and proof, the very means of establishing truth. Critical mathematics education also attacks the neutrality of the teaching andlearning of mathematics, showing how these are value‐laden activities indissolubly linked to social and political life. Instead, it argues that the valuesof openness, dialogicality, criticality towards received opinion, empowerment of the learner, and social/political engagement and citizenship arenecessary dimensions of the teaching and learning of mathematics, if it is to contribute towards democracy and social justice. This book draws together critical theoretic contributions on mathematics and mathematics education from leading researchers in the field.Recurring themes include: The natures of mathematics and critical mathematics education, issues of epistemology and ethics; Ideology, thehegemony o...

Since the beginning of the new millennium China's western region receives special attention by the central government in terms of economic development. The main reason is that the population in China's underdeveloped west is more and more unsatisfied with its situation. The eastern provinces and coastal regions have reached a relatively high level of development while a greater part of the western rural regions are underdeveloped, generating growth rates which cannot compete with those of the East and having no means to foster development on their own. During the prior 20 years the disparities between China's West and the East were increasing entailing the thread of social instability and riots which is something the government in Beijing fears most. Inside the engine-room of China's economic growth—the China Development Bank Anyone wanting a primer on the secret of China's economic success need look no further than China Development Bank (CDB)—which has displaced the World Bank as the world's biggest development bank, lending billions to countries around the globe to further Chinese policy goals. In China’s Superbank, Bloomberg authors Michael Forsythe and Henry Sanderson outline how the bank is at the center of China's domestic economic growth and how it is helping to expand China's influence in strategically important overseas markets. 100 percent owned by the Chinese government, the CDB holds the key to understanding the inner workings of China's state-led economic development model, and its most glaring flaws. The bank is at the center of the country's efforts to build a world-class network of highways, railroads, and power grids, pioneering a lending scheme to local governments that threatens to spawn trillions of yuan in bad loans. It is doling out credit lines by the billions to Chinese solar and wind power makers, threatening to bury global competitors with a flood of cheap products. Another $45 billion in credit has been given to the country's two biggest telecom equipment makers who are using the money to win contracts around the globe, helping fulfill the goal of China's leaders for its leading companies to «go global.» Bringing the story of China Development Bank to life by crisscrossing China to investigate the quality of its loans, China’s Superbank travels the globe, from Africa, where its China-Africa fund is displacing Western lenders in a battle for influence, to the oil fields of Venezuela. Offers a fascinating insight into the China Development Bank (CDB), the driver of China's rapid economic development Travels the globe to show how the CDB is helping Chinese businesses «go global» Written by two respected reporters at Bloomberg News As China's influence continues to grow around the world, many people are asking how far it will extend. China’s Superbank addresses these vital questions, looking at the institution at the heart of this growth.

Just as in past decades, mathematics education experienced a"turn to the social" in which socio-cultural factors were explored, in recent years there has been anascent "turn to the body." An increasing number of researchers and theorists in mathematics education have become interested in thefact that, although mathematics may be socially constructed, this construction is not arbitrary or unconstrained, but rather is rooted in,and shaped by, the body. All those who engage with mathematics, whether at an elementary or advanced level, share the same basic biologicaland cognitive capabilities, as well as certain common physical experiences that come with being humans living in a materialworld. In addition, the doing and communicating of mathematics is never a purely intellectual activity: it involves a wide range ofbodily actions, from committing inscriptions to paper or whiteboard, to speaking, listening, gesturing and gazing. This volume willpresent recent research on gesture and mathematics, within a framework that addresses several level...

These reforms helped the country to achieve an immense economic upturn with annual growth rates of almost ten percent and thus made China an ever more important actor on the international stage of politics. The United States strongly support China's economic development by granting it permanent Normal Trade Relations, for example, and investing directly in China's manufacturing sector. But whereas China has been liberalizing its market, using American interests to gain profits, it largely maintains its defensive and rejecting attitude about changing its human rights situation. There are controversial opinions about how the United States should respond towards China human rights situation. In order to make aware of the stagnated situation of the human rights issue in U.S. China policy, this paper explores how the Clinton administration handled human rights in China policy and looks at the role of human rights in the Bush jr. administration's policy towards China.

Since its opening up and economic reforms in 1979, China has undergone tremendous economic growth and social development, with a ten percent real gross domestic product growth per year on average through 2013. In spite of such an accomplishment, the current economic growth model in China, which is mainly triggered by the export-led policy and the huge government investment, has been challenged by potential external and internal risks, which do not support sustainable economic growth in the long run. In this book, the author comprehensively reviews the corporate governance practices in China, identifying the major problems within such practices. It is contended that these problems have been seen as the major challenges facing the Chinese economy, and further, that the current weakness of corporate governance practices in China can be ascribed, to a great extent, to the incompleteness and weakness of law enforcement.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, , language: English, abstract: The global political system resulting from the end of the Cold War, which consecrated the implosion of the Soviet Union at the turn of the 1990s, remains marked with the American superpower. China, which has naturally always been a great nation in the international system, is on a steady and tremendous growth, a development process which is leading to a dramatic change in the global power distribution and the positioning of China as a potential contender of the U.S. the world affairs. While China needs to pursue its economic, security and political goals, it must also deal with the security dilemma induced by its emergence as a great power. This study discusses how China pursues its rise with the constraint of the American dominance of the international system. Essentially a theoretical undertaking, this thesis proposes an analysis of China's emergence from the assumptions of offensive realism developed by John J. Mearsheimer. It results from this analysis that China appears to follow a strategy that combines three complementary dimensions: on the internal level, economic and military reforms; and externally, an assertive and effective diplomacy in line with its strategic goals. Such an approach is innovative in the sense that it aims to raise the national and international profile of China through mainly economic power rather than military.

The driving forces behind mathematics learning trajectories is the need to understand how children actuallylearn and make sense of mathematics-how they progress from prior knowledge, through intermediateunderstandings, to the mathematics target understandings-and how to use these insights to improveinstruction and student learning. In this book, readers will come to understand what learning trajectories are,the research and methodology that are necessary for developing them, and gain insight into potentialapplications of learning trajectories.A synthesis and research outcome in their own right, learning trajectories provide detailed description ofinstructionally-grounded development of mathematical concepts and reasoning from the perspective of student learning, and, overall, building ondecades of accumulated experience in mathematics education research. However, their greater importance may lie in their potential as frameworks thatcontribute an unprecedented coherence across classroom instruction, professional development, standards, and assessment, by focusing squarely onconceptual understanding and reasoning instead of assessment-driven procedural knowledge. This potential was sufficiently compelling as anorganizing framework to have been cited as a basis for the Common Core mathematics standards, the new mathematics learning expectations that arenow consistent across most of the United States. (Among the conference attendees were the writers of the Common Core State Stand...

A Volume in The Montana Mathematics Enthusiast:Monograph Series in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of MontanaThe word "critical" in the title of this collection has three meanings, all of which are relevant. One meaning, as applied toa situation or problem, is "at a point of crisis". A second meaning is "expressing adverse or disapproving comments orjudgments". A third is related to the verb "to critique", meaning "to analyze the merits and faults of". The authorscontributing to this book pose challenging questions, from multiple perspectives, about the roles of mathematics insociety and the implications for education. Traditional reasons for teaching mathematics include: preparing a newgeneration of mathematics researchers and a cadre of technically competent users of mathematics; training students tothink logically; and because mathematics is as much part of cultural heritage as literature or music. These reasons remainvalid, though open to critique, but a deeper analysis is required that recognizes the roles of mathematics in framing manyaspects of contemporary society, that will connect mathematics education to the lived experiences of students, theircommunities, and society in general, and that acknowledges the global ethical responsibilities of mathematicians andmathematics educators. The book is organized in four sections (1) Mathematics education: For what and why?(2) Globalization and cultural...

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

Despite their similarities, Russia and China adopted two very different strategies toward reforming their economic structure. Russian Federation launched the program of mass privatization of the state-owned enterprises, while People's Republic of China chose more gradual approach toward restructuring of the economy at large and its public sector in particular. In the years of the partial reform China demonstrated the high rate of economic growth, large inflow of Foreign Direct Investments and improvement of the performance of its state sector, while Russian economy experienced the prolonged and severe economic downturn with falling industrial production rate and hyperinflation.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Xiamen University, language: English, abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the economic growth stimulus due to its associated variables such as capital investment, technical know-how, knowledge transfer and managerial competence required for economic growth. In the last decade, China has emerged on the international financial scene as both financier and investment partner to African economies. Many African economies such as the oil producing and exporting ones have witnessed streams of China's FDI in their economies whereas non-oil exporting ones have accessed some of China's FDI in selective sectors. This paper aims at investigating the relationship between China's FDI and economic growth in Ghana measured by real average annual domestic product (GDP) per capita growth for the period 2001-2010. By using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model, the result indicates that China's FDI has negative significant effect on Ghana's economic growth. However, it exerts different effects on value added in the three economic sectors.

Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on schoolmathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions theteacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much moreoriginate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude inhow they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materialsmay differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that canimprove their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationshipbetween curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

Document from the year 2012 in the subject Education - Educational Tests & Measurements, , language: English, abstract: Mathematics is an important discipline of learning at the secondary stage. It predominantly contributes to the development of precision, rational and analytical thinking, reasoning and scientific temper. One of the basic aims of teaching Mathematics at secondary stage is to inculcate the skill of quantification of experience gathered by the learner. But still some of the students find Mathematics as very difficult subject. Among different branches of Mathematics, Algebra is used to enable the learner to apply its knowledge to other branches of Mathematics. The pre-requisite test can help the students to know their weaknesses in the basic concepts and it also helps the teachers to know the level of their students. The authors had constructed a pre-requisite test covering all units of Algebra of standard X and implemented on the randomly selected standard X students of the twelve non-granted Gujarati medium schools of Vadodara, Gujarat, India. Based on the findings of the study, the authors discussed and suggested some ways for the teachers teaching Mathematics at secondary school level.

A perennial discussion about teacher development is the optimal content background for teachers. Inrecent years, that discussion has taken center stage in the work of mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics professional developers, and mathematics education policymakers. Muchof the existing and prior work in this area has been directed toward mathematical knowledge forteaching at the elementary level. The work described in this volume takes a sometimes-neglectedapproach, focusing on the dynamic nature of mathematical understanding rather than on a stabledescription of mathematical knowledge, and on mathematics for secondary teaching rather thanmathematics for teaching at the elementary level. The work reported in Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching: A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations is a practice-basedresponse to the question of what mathematical understandings secondary teachers could productively use in their teaching. For each of more than 50events, our team of almost 50 mathematics educators who were experienced mathematics teachers developed descriptions of the mathematics thatteachers could use-each of those descriptions (consisting of the event and the mathematics related to the event) is what we call a Situation. Wedeveloped our Framework for Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching (MUST) based on an analysis of our entire set of Situations. Several factors have influenced theundertaking of this project by the editors. First, an international volume focusing on gender and mathematicshas not appeared since publication of papers emerging from the 1996 International Congress onMathematical Education (Keitel, 1998). Surely it was time for an updated look at this critical area ofmathematics education. Second, we have had lively discussion and working groups on gender issues atconferences of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education [PME] for the past fouryears, sessions at which stimulating and ground-breaking research has been discussed by participants from many different countries. Some publicationseemed essential to share this new knowledge emerging from a wider variety of countries and from different cultural perspectives. Third, some westerncountries such as Australia and the USA have experienced in recent years a focus on the "boy problem," with an underlying assumption that issues offemales and mathematics have been solved and are no longer worthy of interest. Thus it seemed timely to look more closely at the issue of gender andmathematics internationally. When the idea for this volume first emerged, invitations w...

Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India are the countries that have strong and dynamic economy in the 21st century. One of the most important factors which contributes to these countries to come to the existing position is due to the curriculum that they have designed in mathematics and science subjects for their young generations. The authors have tried to go through the curriculum 0f these countries starting from kindergarten to high school. The book shows how they have laid foundation in mathematics and science in the ladder of their education system. We encourage scholars to go through the book and check what their country education looks like by taking the indicators that we used to compare. After reading the book, they will have an opportunity to learn from these countries and forward some valuable intellectual inputs to their countries. These days it has become common to call South Korea by the name of "Dynamic Korea". This is the result of the science and mathematics curriculum they have designed for their competency. In that attempt there are two main objectives. One is a theoreticalinterest that involves examining the issue of the subjectivity of the teacher and exploringhow intersubjective negotiations shape the production of classroom practice. A secondobjective is to apply these understandings to the production of mathematical knowledgeand to the construction of identities in actual mathematics classrooms. To that end thebook will contain substantial essays that draw on postmodern philosophies of the socialto explore theory's relationship with the practice of mathematics pedagogy.Unpacking Pedagogy takes new ideas seriously and engages readers in theory development. Groundbreaking in content, thebook investigates how our thinking about classroom practice in general, and mathematics teaching (and learning), in particular, might be transformed. As a key resource for interrogating and understanding classroom life, the book's sophisticatedanalyses allow readers to build new knowledge about mathematics pedagogy. Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 2,7, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: Since 2002, China's rapid growth and the trend of globalization have forced China to face its currency's regime development. Although Chinese central bank in 2005 announced to adjust its regime towards basket policy, Yuan has been pegged to USD while maintained undervalu-ation and trade surplus in the following years, which led to global criticism and pressure to revalue. Under such circumstance, the discussion around Yuan has shifted towards whether Chinese currency regime should be more flexible, abandoning the old argument that how much Yuan should revalue. This essay provides a study regarding the future of RMB, based on analysis of Yuan's development before and after entering WTO, and the pros and cons of Yuan's regime during China's development. Also, this article also draws insights from the development of capital export and restriction, high saving rate and huge foreign reserves. Based on the analysis, the article reaches the conclusion: considering the huge negative impact on China's economy should Yuan revaluate, it is not realistic to expect Yuan to raise sharply in the near future; if China is to allow Yuan to revalue, the most possible course of action is to implement some extra financial polices to reduce the impact.

But, many countries such as the Asian Tigers have shown that with targeted, appropriate and adequate investment in human resource development through education, a society may be easily transformed from underdevelopment and poverty to prosperity and higher standard of living. With Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the international community committed for the first time as a whole to an expanded vision of poverty reduction and pro-poor growth, one that vigorously places human development at the center of social and economic progress in all countries. An in-depth look at the forces and trends changing China and its place in the world China has dominated the news for nearly a decade and will continue to grab headlines as it moves inexorably toward becoming the world's largest economy. It already has the largest middle class in the world; the most Internet users; the largest army; and is the world's largest polluter. Yet all this growth causes problems as China adapts to the laws of other lands in which it has investments; learns how to meet international guidelines and safety standards for its products; stretches its resources to the limit; and struggles to maintain stability and control over an increasingly restive population. China Inside Out explores the social and economic forces unleashed by China's relentless drive to modernization. Bill Dodson presents the stories of average Chinese workers, along with interviews with experts interlaced with his own experiences. The end result is an insider's view of the forces reshaping China as it takes an increasingly prominent role in the new world order.
