One approach to organic synthesis is retrosynthetic analysis. With this approach chemists start with the structures of their target molecules and progressively cut bonds to create simpler molecules. Reversing this process gives a synthetic route to the target molecule from simpler starting materials. This “disconnection” approach to synthesis is now a fundamental part of every organic synthesis course. Workbook for Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition This workbook provides a comprehensive graded set of problems to illustrate and develop the themes of each of the chapters in the textbook Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition. Each problem is followed by a fully explained solution and discussion. The examples extend the student’s experience of the types of molecules being synthesised by organic chemists, and the strategies they employ to control their syntheses. By working through these examples students will develop their skills in analysing synthetic challenges, and build a toolkit of strategies for planning new syntheses. Examples are drawn from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, natural products, pheromones, perfumery and flavouring compounds, dyestuffs, monomers, and intermediates used in more advanced synthetic work. Reasons for wishing to synthesise each compound are given. Together the workbook and textbook provide a complete course in retrosynthetic analysis. Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition There are forty chapters in Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition: those on the synthesis of given types of molecules alternate with strategy chapters in which the methods just learnt are placed in a wider context. The synthesis chapters cover many ways of making each type of molecule starting with simple aromatic and aliphatic compounds with one functional group and progressing to molecules with many functional groups. The strategy chapters cover questions of selectivity, protection, stereochemistry, and develop more advanced thinking via reagents specifically designed for difficult problems. In its second edition updated examples and techniques are included and illustrated additional material has been added to take the student to the level required by the sequel, Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control. Several chapters contain extensive new material based on courses that the authors give to chemists in the pharmaceutical industry. Workbook for Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd edition, combined with the main textbook, provides a full course in retrosynthetic analysis for chemistry and biochemistry students, and a refresher course for organic chemists working in industry and academia.

The past decade has seen a significant increase of research aimed at discovering new drugs for treating cancer, and the increasing number of new antineoplastic drugs approved by regulatory agencies reflects this. Until now, details on the synthesis of these newer agents have been scattered in various journals and in US and European patents. This timely volume deals with the organic chemistry involved in the synthesis of the agents found within antineoplastic drugs, including descriptions of the synthetic schemes for the preparation of over 200 compounds that have been granted non-proprietary names. Compounds are collected in chapters based on the mechanism of action rather than on their chemical structures. Each individual chapter is preceded by a brief description of that mechanism and includes detailed flow charts of the preparation of those compounds accompanied by discussions of the organic chemistry involved in each step. The first half of this volume is dedicated to the syntheses of established chemotherapy drugs. Kinase inhibitors occupy the following chapters with the largest single chapter dealing with the fifty compounds that inhibit tyrosine kinase. This class stands out since over twenty compounds in this group have been approved for treating patients; a rare track record compared to any other class of therapeutic agents. Antineoplastic Drugs: Organic Syntheses is written to appeal to organic and medicinal chemists in industry and academia. It is beneficial to those composing grant proposals for NCI and related organizations. The book is accessible to advanced undergraduates as well as graduates and researchers as well as those with a thorough grasp of organic chemistry.

In this book we highlight the strong synthetic potential and scope of transition metal-catalyzed rearrangement reactions for fully economical and complex carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. The Meyer-Schuster and the Rupe rearrangements are emerging as the methods of choice for the homologation of carbonyl compounds into α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, particularly useful for the synthesis of many hindered ketones. The Rautenstrauch-I and Rautenstrauch-II rearrangements of readily propargylic derivatives are very useful reactions for the synthesis of complex cyclopentenones, and bicyclo[n.1.0] enol carboxylates in high chemical yields, which proceed under mild reaction conditions with high stereoselectivity, and total transfer of chirality. In the case of Rautenstrauch-II, the basic-methanolysis of the resulting compounds provides bicyclo[n.1.0]ketones, valuable building blocks for the preparation of natural products. A reaction mechanism has been advanced, and confirmed by experimental evidences, which supports the involvement of metallo-carbenes as key species formed through a cyclopropanation event that precedes the 1,2-acyloxy migration.

The chemistry of chalcone has been recognized as a significant field of study.Chalcones are the compounds where aromatic substituent are introduced into the terminal position of the system -C=C-C=O. So, chalcones are characterized by their possession of a structure in which two aromatic rings A and B are linked by an aliphatic three-carbon chain [(A) Ar-CO-CH=CH-Ar (B)]. An interesting feature of chalcone is that it serves as starting materials for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds such as pyrimidines, pyrazolines, pyrazoles, flavones, flavonols, flavanones, aurones and benzoyl coumarones as well as certain compounds like deoxybenzoins and hydantoins, which are of some therapeutic value.

Green chemistry is not a new branch of science. It is a new philosophical approach that through application and extension of the principles of green chemistry can contribute to sustainable development. Presently it is easy to find in the literature many interesting examples of the use of green chemistry rules. They are applied not only in synthesis, processing and using of chemical compounds. Many new analytical methodologies are also described which are realized according to green chemistry rules. They are useful in conducting chemical processes and in evaluation of their effects on the environment. Great efforts are still undertaken to design an ideal process that starts from non-polluting initial materials, leads to no secondary products and requires no solvents to carry out the chemical conversion or to isolate and purify the product.

Antibacterial agents act against bacterial infection either by killing the bacterium or by arresting its growth. They do this by targeting bacterial DNA and its associated processes, attacking bacterial metabolic processes including protein synthesis, or interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis and function. Antibacterial Agents is an essential guide to this important class of chemotherapeutic drugs. Compounds are organised according to their target, which helps the reader understand the mechanism of action of these drugs and how resistance can arise. The book uses an integrated “lab-to-clinic” approach which covers drug discovery, source or synthesis, mode of action, mechanisms of resistance, clinical aspects (including links to current guidelines, significant drug interactions, cautions and contraindications), prodrugs and future improvements. Agents covered include: agents targeting DNA – quinolone, rifamycin, and nitroimidazole antibacterial agents agents targeting metabolic processes – sulfonamide antibacterial agents and trimethoprim agents targeting protein synthesis – aminoglycoside, macrolide and tetracycline antibiotics, chloramphenicol, and oxazolidinones agents targeting cell wall synthesis – β-Lactam and glycopeptide antibiotics, cycloserine, isonaizid, and daptomycin Antibacterial Agents will find a place on the bookshelves of students of pharmacy, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, drug design/discovery, and medicinal chemistry, and as a bench reference for pharmacists and pharmaceutical researchers in academia and industry.

Sunny N.E. Omorodion New Frontiers in Sciences, Engineering and the Arts. Vol. II The Chemistry of Initiation of Non-Ringed Monomers/Compounds

This book subtitled “The Chemistry of Initiation of Non-Ringed Compounds/Monomers” is the second Volume [Vol. (II)] of the book titled “The New Frontiers in Sciences, Engineering and the Arts”. For a compound to undergo Initiation, it must be such that has what is called Activation center(s) wherein there are three kinds of many types. When such compounds are activated, they can be made to undergo either polymeric or chemical reactions. When made to undergo polymeric reactions, the compounds are said to be Addition monomers. It is only when the Initiation Step is favoured by the monomer using an Initiator, that the Propagation Step begins, just as when a child is born into our world, the child begins to grow. If the Initiation Step is not favoured, due to presence of what are called Transfer Species, then chemical reactions take place to give non-polymeric products under Equilibrium mechanism conditions. There are different kinds and types of Transfer Species. They are so important to the point where they indeed embrace the first law in Chemistry, that which has been called ‘The law of Conservation of transfer of transfer species”, almost analogous to the Conservation laws in Engineering. Based on this law, so many new concepts too countless to list were identified. How some compounds/monomers rearrange to give other compounds/monomers via different kinds of phenomena all new to Present-day Science, have been identified. So also, are the concepts of Resonance Stabilization wh...

Borisov S., Voronkov M., Lukevits E. Organosilicon Derivatives of Phosphorus and Sulfur

One of the characteristics of the development of chemical science in the middle of the present century is the vigorous pro gress of the "third chemistry," which is often named now the chemistry of heteroorganic compounds. Then in the last decade, among specialists in this field there has been a marked increase in interest in heteroatomic organic derivatives of silicon, i. e. , heteroorganic silicon compounds. However, until recently this new class of chemical substances, which is extremely interesting theoretically and practically, has been without a single specialized monograph which systematizes and generalizes all progress in the heteroorganic chemistry of silicon. The first attempt in this direction was our book "Heteroorganic Compounds of Silicon" [42 (F), 17 (S) *], which appeared at the end of 1966 and was published as an English translation in the USA in 1969. However, as follows from its subtitle "Derivatives of Inorganic Elements," this mono graph could not cover the whole broad field of the chemistry of heteroorganic compounds of silicon. The main reason for this was above all the abundance and variety of original investigations of organosilicon derivatives of inorganic elements, which was un expected even to the authors themselves. As a result of this the planned length of the book compelled us to omit the sections on organosilicon compounds of phosphorus and sulfur, which had al ready been prepared for publication.Издательство - Plenum press

The incorporation of functional ingredients in a given food system and the processing and handling of such foods are associated with nutritional challenges for their healthy delivery. The extreme sensitivity of some components cause significant loss of product quality, stability, nutritional value and bioavailability, and the overall acceptability of the food product. Consequently, encapsulation has been successfully used to improve stability and bioavailability of functional ingredients. Encapsulation is one example of technology that has the potential to meet the challenge of successfully incorporating and delivering functional ingredients into a range of food types. The book will cover topics about 1) Characterization of novel polymers and their use in encapsulation processes. 2) Stability of nutraceutical compounds encapsulated with novel polymers. 3) Application of encapsulated compounds with novel polymers in functional food systems. This book provides a detailed overview of technologies for preparing and characterisation of encapsulates for food active ingredients using modified polymers. The use of modified polymers as coating materials it is a field that still needs study. The book is aimed to inform students and researchers in the areas of food science and food technology, and professionals in the food industry.

This is the fourth of five books in the Amino Acids, Peptides and Proteins in Organic Synthesis series. Closing a gap in the literature, this is the only series to cover this important topic in organic and biochemistry. Drawing upon the combined expertise of the international «who's who» in amino acid research, these volumes represent a real benchmark for amino acid chemistry, providing a comprehensive discussion of the occurrence, uses and applications of amino acids and, by extension, their polymeric forms, peptides and proteins. The practical value of each volume is heightened by the inclusion of experimental procedures. The 5 volumes cover the following topics: Volume 1: Origins and Synthesis of Amino Acids Volume 2: Modified Amino Acids, Organocatalysis and Enzymes Volume 3: Building Blocks, Catalysis and Coupling Chemistry Volume 4: Protection Reactions, Medicinal Chemistry, Combinatorial Synthesis Volume 5: Analysis and Function of Amino Acids and Peptides The fourth volume in this series is structured in three main sections. The first section is about protection reactions and amino acid based peptidomimetics. The second, and most extensive, part is devoted to the medicinal chemistry of amino acids. It includes, among others, the chemistry of alpha- and beta amino acids, peptide drugs, and advances in N- and O-glycopeptide synthesis. The final part deals with amino acids in combinatorial synthesis. Methods, such as phage display, library peptide synthesis, and computational design are described. Originally planned as a six volume series, Amino Acids, Peptides and Proteins in Organic Chemistry now completes with five volumes but remains comprehensive in both scope and coverage. Further information about the 5 Volume Set and purchasing details can be viewed here.
