This book is made up of seven chapters following the introductory chapter. The chapter two reviewed the main developments in soil fertility management for increased yields in low-input millet-based cropping systems in Sahelian areas. Chapter three discusses the determinants of fertilizer micro-dosing induced yield increment of pearl millet. Chapter four addresses the potential of combined application of fertilizer micro-dosing and manure to improve millet yield and water use efficiency. Chapter five deals with the nutrient balances under fertilizer micro-dosing while the potential of Acacia tumida mulches for increasing millet yield and water use efficiency under fertilizer micro-dosing is presented in Chapter six. Chapter seven provides the general discussion of the main findings described in the different sections of Chapter four and finally Chapter eight provides the conclusions and recommendations emanating from the study.

Application of compost 5 t ha-1 + 2 t ha-1 lignite significantly increased the average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield, nutrient contents in fruit and plant, fertilizer use efficiency, net return, B: C ratio. Daily method of fertigation significantly increased the chlorophyll content at fruit set stage, average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield, POC, SOC, POC : SOC ratio in soil, available nutrients in soil, nutrients content in fruit, fertilizer use efficiency, net return and B : C ratio over conventional method of fertilizer application. Combination effect of methods of fertilizer application and doses of NPK fertilizers resulted in significantly higher average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield, available N and P in soil and N content in plant. Combined effect of organic manures and doses of NPK fertilizers significantly enhanced fruit yield of tomato. Combined effect of organic manures and methods of fertilizer application significantly increased fruit yield of tomato and available nitrogen in soil.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) is one of the major staple root crops in different countries of the world.However, the yield potential is seldom realized, and among the yield limiting factors, soil fertility is one of the major factor affecting the yield of the crop. Thus, this book gives research result on 'Response Taro to Applied N and K Fertilizer Levels. Two types of fertilizers at different levels, i.e. K (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1) and N (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), were combined in factorial for the experimental study. The response of taro to N and K levels was assessed by examining growth and yield parameters. The result revealed that K had no significant effect on the growth and yield of taro, except for the corm dry weight. But N had significantly affected both the growth and yield of taro. The maximum yield (60.96 t ha-1) was obtained by application of 150 kg N ha-1. Economic analysis showed that the highest net benefit was obtained in treatment combination of 75 kg K ha-1 with 150 kg N ha-1. However, the marginal rate of return analysis was optimum when 100 kg N ha-1 was applied. Thus, 100 kg N ha-1 was found optimum for taro production based on this experiment.

Kalubarme Manik, Sharma Alka Wheat Production Forecast in Himachal Pradesh Using Remote Sensing Data

This report summarizes the results of six year (1996-97 to 2002-03) of Remote Sensing (RS) based district-level wheat acreage estimates and agromet model predicted wheat yields. District-level preharvest wheat production forecast in major wheat growing districts in Himachal Pradesh was attempted under crop acreage and production estimation (CAPE) project. Single date Indian Remote Sensing Satellite digital data, coinciding with flowering to grain filling stage of wheat was analysed for wheat acreage estimation using maximum likely hood (MXL) supervised classification and district boundary mask approach. Agrometeorologial yield models were developed for wheat yield forecast using meteorological data such as minimum-maximum temperatures, rainfall and sunshine hours. The meteorological indices viz. Growing Degree Days (GDD), Temperature Difference (TD), Accumulated Rainfall (ARF) and Accumulated Sunshine Hours (ASH) were computed and used in model development. This report also brings out problems in wheat acreage estimation in hilly terrains using Remote Sensing data.

Intercropping is experienced by preponderance of farmers in many regions of the world. Intercropping has since long been used as mean to cover the risk of failure of base crop and it can pilot to boost food supply without retreating the sustainability of soil. This system of cropping suppresses weeds, reduces pest disease infestation, gives yield advantage and there is stable yield over time. Crop fertilizer needs can be met with the addition of an organic fertilizer, which is suitable for enhancing crop yields on sustained basis and cost effective too. The use of legumes as an intercrop can serve a potential source of organic fertilizer. It can be used as a supplement source of nutrition especially that of nitrogen. It is an economical way of food production as one input such as N from legume can be applied once and used by all the crop components in the farm thereby saving time for the farmer. Thus present project will be helpful to farmers in order to augment the crop yield and sustain the soil fertility, identify an effective and low cost fertilizer level technique for maize and substitute N-fertilizer with leguminous crops as an organic source.

Wheat encounters severe salt problems in comparison to rainy season crops because of high salt concentration which is built up in the root zone owing to high crop transpiration or by the use of saline water which adversely affects the growth of plant due to osmotic effects, ionic toxicity, nutritional imbalances and physico-chemical degradation of soil. Although reclamation is a solution to this problem but scarcity of irrigation water, financial constraints and lack of drainage facility hampers its implementation. In such an eventuality, breeding for salinity tolerance is the only admirable approach. Available information on genetic architecture of yield and it's contributing characters of bread wheat for salinity conditions is very less; thus it is necessary to study the genetics for yield and related characteristics and their inheritance under salinity conditions. The ensuing investigation were undertaken to analyse three crosses of wheat including salinity tolerant parents under saline and normal environments with the relevant objectives like estimation of the magnitude of gene effects for yield and its contributing characters in three crosses of wheat for improving tolerance.

Complementing breeding effort by deploying alternative methods of identifying higher yielding genotypes in a plant breeding program is important for obtaining greater genetic gains. Spectral reflectance indices (SRI) are one of the several indirect selection tools that have been reported to be associated with many physiological processes of different crop species. The value of SRI as a plant breeding tool for yield improvement has not been well established. Therefore, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential use of SRI as a plant breeding tool for yield improvement using breeding populations and released cultivars of wheat. Association between grain yield and SRI, biomass and SRI, heritability of the SRI and yield, response to selection and correlated response, relative selection efficiency of the SRI, and efficiency in selecting the higher yielding genotypes by the SRI are discussed. The findings should help wheat breeders to utilize SRI as an indirect selection tool for yield improvement.

A two year experiment was conducted at the Teaching & Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Makurdi to determine the effect of tillage practices & fertilizer rates on Maize-Soybean Intercrop. The experimental design consisted of three factors: cropping system at two levels (sole and intercrops), tillage practices at two levels (zero tillage and ridges) and fertilizer rates at three levels (0, 150 and 300 kg/ha of NPK 20:10:10). The treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in a split-split plot arrangement and replicated three times. The cropping systems were assigned to the main plots, tillage practices to sub-plots and the fertilizer rates were in the sub-sub plots. Results showed that Intercropping reduced the yields of both crops compared with their sole crops. There were higher yields from crops cultivated on ridges as a result of improved access to soil moisture than no-tillage. Applying fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased the yield of the component crops than when no fertilizer was applied. Intercropping resulted in yield advantage. Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) was (1.53) in 2013 and (1.35) in 2014 showing 35 % and 26 % land saved.

The high population pressure in central Kenya has lead to continuous cultivation with minimal application of nutrient, resulting in nutrient depletion. A study was conducted to determine the effect of 'Push-pull' (intercropping maize with Desmodium and Napier grass) strategy management and nitrogen application on maize grain yield and soil fertility on smallholder farmer's fields in three districts of central Kenya highlands. The experiment design was a split plot design with two factors ('Push-pull' vs monoculture and manure (5 t/ha) only vs manure and fertilizer (40 kg/ha) replicated four times.I found an increase in maize yield in 'Push-pull' fields compared with monocultures with only manure added (5t/ha) and the yield increased even more with modest application of fertilizer (40KgN/ha) combined with manure (5t/ha).There was strong significant difference (p<0.001) on maize grain yield between 'Push-pull' (5.52t/ha) and monoculture (1.93t/ha) cropping systems in the three districts of central Kenya.From management perspective, the different fertilization regimes had strongest positive effect on maize yield in well managed 'Push-pull' cropping systems.

The conceptual basis of the model is accommodation theory, which allows for different levels of targeting based on the language mix used in advertisements. The model was tested on three different ethnic groups in Malaysia, namely the Malays, Chinese, and Iban.

Many researchers in this review investigate that the responses are highly dependent on the type of fat and protein supplement and the stage of lactation. A higher milk response was observed with saturated than with unsaturated fat supplements. Diet with added fat increase milk production compared with a control diet without added fat in cows. Feeding of bypass fat resulted in significant increase in milk yield and Fat Corrected Milk yield particularly in early lactation. The source of Protected fat are (origin (animal, plant, processed or whole oilseeds, calcium salts) and Cereal Grains such as corn, wheat, Barly, oil seeds, sun flower, cotton seed, soybeans and canola). Assuming an independent and correlated specification for its factors, we estimate the factor dynamics by maximum likelihood. Additionally, estimation of the factors is done by Kalman filtering. We derive a closed-form distribution for future factors, forecast them and present the insample and out-of-sample forecasts. As a useful addition, we discuss the main finding of the thesis, namely a stochastic model for the predicted yield curve, when a future yield with certain maturity is given.

Nowadays the largest E-commerce or E-service websites offer millions of products for sale. A Recommender system is defined as software used by such websites for recommending product items to users according to the users' tastes. In this project, we develop a recommender system for a private multimedia web service company. In particular, we devise three recommendation engines using different data filtering methods - named weighted-average, K-nearest neighbors, and item-based - which are based on collaborative filtering techniques, which work by recording user preferences on items and by anticipating the future likes and dislikes of users by comparing the records, for prediction of user preference. To acquire proper input data for the three engines, we retrieve data from database using three data collection techniques: active filtering, passive filtering, and item-based filtering. For experimental purpose we compare prediction accuracy of those recommendation engines with the results from each engine and additionally we evaluate the performance of weighted-average method using an empirical analysis approach - a methodology which was devised for verification of predictive accuracy.

The present study was undertaken; to evaluate the response of recurrent selection derived lines by the testing of (C3) derived lines for genetic variability, genetic advance and heritability and to assess the effect of selection on other quantitative traits. The 16 half-sib families were selected from 3rd cycle of recurrent selection were grown for evaluation in randomized block design in rabi 2009 -10 along with check varieties Bhima and A1. The expected genetic advance expressed as per cent of population mean at 10 per cent was high for seed yield per plot (48.44) followed by seed yield per plant (28.88). The expected genetic advance per cent over Bhima at 10 per cent selection intensity was high for seed yield per plot (28.27) followed by seed yield per plant (22.78). In safflower seed yield per plant was positively and significantly correlated with days to maturity, number of capitula per plant, number of seeds per capitulum and 100 seed weight. Common (bread) wheat is an allohexaploid species (Triticum aestivum L.) with 3 compensating genomes AABBDD (2n=6x=42 chromosomes). Traditionally genetic and physical mapping in this most important cereal crop has been based on molecular markers (RFLPs, PCR, Insitu hubridisation etc). The recent development in producing deletion lines of common wheat (using Aegilops cylindricum genome) has revolutionized the physical mapping of wheat chromosomes. During present study, deletion lines of chromosomes 2A of common wheat were used to identify RAPD (Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA) based molecular markers specific for short and/or long arm of chromosome 2A. Out of the 7 RAPD primers used, OPA-07 showed useful polymorphism. By comparing the C-banding karyotype of the deletion lines, it is inferred that the primer (OPA-07) anneals to the distal half of the long arm of chromosome 2A.

Macro-finance modelling is an increasingly popular topic. Various approaches have been developing rapidly, usually using econometric techniques. This book focuses on structural approach to an analysis of average yield curve and its dynamics using macroeconomic factors. An underlying model is based on basic Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) approach. Log-linearized solution of the model is the key for derivation of yield curve and its main determinants - pricing kernel, price of risk and affine term structure of interest rates - based on no-arbitrage assumption. The book presents a consistent derivation of a structural macro-finance model, with a reasonable computational burden that allows for time varying term premia. A simple VAR model, widely used in macro-finance literature, serves as a benchmark. The two models are briefly compared and analysis shows their ability to fit an average yield curve observed from the data. It also presents a possible importance of this issue for monetary and fiscal institutions. The book should help shed some light on the use of DSGE framework within macro-finance modelling and should be useful for students and researchers in this field.

Response of cabbage to different formulated irrigation schedules under mulch and non-mulch condition using calibrated AquaCrop model was evaluated. The formulated alternative delivery schedules were optimized based on water use efficiency. Simulations were carried out for the period 27th November 2013 to 19th February 2014. The model provided excellent simulation of canopy and yield. The harvest index was observed as 80% for cabbage.Schedule S8 (mulch + Irrigation schedule at 80% ETc) saved 25.19% water with only 4.63% reduction in the yield of cabbage head compared to control and resulted in water use efficiency as 6.05 kgm-3.Thus S8 is recommended to be used for cabbage production, to water productivity.

Bitsadze-Samarskii nonlocal boundary value problem for elliptic differential equation in a Hilbert space H with the self-adjoint positive definite operators A is considered. The well-posedness of this problem in Hölder spaces with a weight is established. The coercivity inequalities for the solutions of the nonlocal boundary value problem for elliptic equation are obtained. The second and fourth orders of accuracy difference schemes for the approximate solutions of this nonlocal boundary value problem are presented. The stability estimates, coercivity and almost coercivity inequalities for the solution of these difference schemes are established. The well-posedness of these difference schemes in Hölder spaces with a weight is proved. The Matlab implementation of these difference schemes for elliptic equation is presented. The theoretical statements for the solution of these difference schemes are supported by the results of numerical examples.
