Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: School inspection is one of the most challenging aspects in education; it represents an approach of accountability in teaching and learning. Moreover, school inspection provides policy and decision makers with accurate information about the current state of education in their respective institutions. The main purpose of this study is to examine and determine the impact of school inspection on teaching and learning in Dubai-based private schools, and to give some recommendations into how to conduct effective school inspection that would positively influence teaching and learning. This research included 37 participants; 2 inspectors, 4 head-teachers and 31 teachers, from 4 private schools, who follow different types of curricula, from all grades of performance according to inspection reports conducted in the 2014/2015 academic year. The findings show that school inspection has a significant role in school improvement, especially in teaching and learning. Teachers acknowledge the feedback that inspectors give to them. However, school inspection also has a negative impact on teaching and learning; for instance, it forces some schools to show activities they have never done before. Moreover, the school inspection reports and recommendations, in some cases, are superficial and are not related to the school context; moreover, they often do not show teac...

Is it because of the insufficient teaching methods, or the poorly organized and compiled syllabus? Or is it because of deficiencies of the individual regarding communication skills? Can it be the lack of experience? In what percentage may the lack of feedback be responsible? Are there any differences between secondary school and language school English teaching? Are language schools more practical, and aim-oriented?The study examines and analyses the possible reasons of this phenomena, including literature overview, assessment of coursebooks and teaching techniques, and analyses the responses on the questionnaires distributed in secondary/language schools, and in the field of labour market.

BEST PRACTICES FROM AUSTRALIA'S HIGH-PERFORMING SCHOOL SYSTEMS Empowered Educators in Australia is one volume in a series that explores how high- performing educational systems from around the world achieve strong results. The anchor book, Empowered Educators: How High-Performing Systems Shape Teaching Quality Around the World, is written by Linda Darling-Hammond and colleagues, with contributions from the authors of this volume. The authors of Empowered Educators in Australia take an in-depth look at the policies and practices surrounding teaching quality in two different states: New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. NSW offers significant support for government schools in areas such as staffing and teacher professional development. Victoria operates a highly devolved school system. Each provides a contrasting view of how federal and state policies combine to shape learning outcomes for students in Australia. The interplay between state and federal policy characterizes an intriguing «centralizing decentralization.» Initiatives to create national curricular, teaching, and teacher education standards all sit in balanced tension with a movement towards greater devolution of authority to schools. Together the NSW and Victoria case studies provide insights into policies that can support high-quality teaching in a federal education system. Australia's current educational reforms place increasing emphasis on issues of teaching quality, reshaping teaching as a standards-based, evidence-informed profession, and one that seeks to foster collegiality and professional exchange. These reforms encompass many aspects of a system that supports teaching quality, and highlight: the way teachers are trained, how they are inducted into the teaching profession and supported with mentors, the professional learning they receive, how they are appraised on their work, and the career pathways for teachers.

Witchcraft violence is a feature of many contemporary African societies. In Ghana, belief in witchcraft and the malignant activities of putative witches is prevalent. Purported witches are blamed for all manner of adversities including inexplicable illnesses and untimely deaths. As in other historical periods and other societies, in contemporary Ghana, alleged witches are typically female, elderly, poor, and marginalized. Childhood socialization in homes and schools, exposure to mass media, and other institutional mechanisms ensure that witchcraft beliefs are transmitted across generations and entrenched over time. This book provides a detailed account of Ghanaian witchcraft beliefs and practices and their role in fueling violent attacks on alleged witches by aggrieved individuals and vigilante groups.

Building a Schoolhouse.Laying the Foundation for Success explores practices that lie at the heart of excellent schools. This user-friendly guide presents foundational principles necessary for success in schools and in classrooms. Building a Schoolhouse is about people-students, teachers, parents, and principals-and their interactions. This book will assist educators and parents in creating and enhancing schools that are known for their student-centered focus, excellence in teaching, shared leadership, and emphasis on individual growth and mutual respect. Schools where trust exists are centers of possibility and growth because students and teachers are willing to take risks in their learning and teaching. The skill and depth of a leader are measured in the small ordinary encounters and events that crowd each school day, as well as in the high-level, serious decisions and complex interactions that occur when working in such a person-rich environment. Students love to learn and teachers love to teach in schools where everyone is empowered to play a significant role in the life of the school. The pressures for accountability are great; the expectations high; the outcomes life changing. Optimists are our leaders, our role models and our most effective teachers because they see the inherent good and the giftedness of their students and colleagues.

Besides running schools, colleges and universities, Government of Nepal has used a large amount of money for educational programmes. But when a teacher enters the class to teach, it is found that they are bound to use traditional methods of teaching in spite of using participatory pedagogies. This book reflects on 'teaching as a culture' in the context of Nepal. It is an autoethnography of a high school teacher who has spent more than two decades in teaching mathematics in secondary schools of Nepal. Basically, this book focuses on how the writer learned mathematics in his school and university days, how his learning is reflected on his teaching, what experiences did he achieve from his classroom practices, what sorts of changes did he bring in his classroom, and the most important part is why is he not able to use participatory pedagogies in teaching mathematics in the classroom even though he is enriched by several student-centred teaching learning methods. This book will be useful for school teachers, students, school principals, school administrators, curriculum makers and analysts, researchers, and project executives especially in the educational sectors.

Current research illustrates that some schools, often referred to as high-performing, high-poverty schools, have led their low-income populations to high levels of achievement (Ambrose, 2008). Hypothesizing that some schools were doing quite well with students from low-income families, the director for the Center for Urban Studies at Harvard University, Ronald Edmonds and other researchers looked at achievement data from schools in major cities around the country where student populations were from high-poverty areas. During the 1980s a list was developed that identified common characteristics that were present in effective schools. These traits became known as the Correlates of Effective Schools. These correlates appeared repeatedly in high-performing schools, despite the schools' socioeconomic levels (Lezotte, 1991). Research regarding high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools specifically located in South Carolina is limited. The purpose of this research was to learn how principals of high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools in South Carolina promote high levels of student achievement.

This work explores a perennial question that Christians who are called to teach must consider: So what makes our teaching Christian? It considers the essential and distinctive elements of Christian teaching by examining the apostles' teaching ministry in the Book of Acts and aspects of Jesus's own teaching in the Gospel of John. It proposes how teaching in the name, spirit, and power of Jesus relates to the teaching ministries of Christians today. For example, an in-depth look at Jesus's teaching of both Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman known in Christian tradition as Photini provides insights for transformative teaching of both insiders and outsiders in a Christian community. This work is a theological, pastoral, and educational exploration of Christian teaching that has implications for both laity and clergy in their ministries.Robert W. Pazmino is Valeria Stone Professor of Christian Education at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, where he has taught since 1986. He has also taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and other theological schools across the United States. He is the author of eight works including God Our Teacher: Theological Basics in Christian Education (2001), a third edition of Foundational Issues in Christian Education (2008), and Doing Theological Research: An Introductory Guide for Surviving and Thriving in Theological Education (2008).

Gender inequality in most democratic countries in the world including Ghana has been a major setback to development. For instance, scholars have postulated on practical ideals and measures that countries could apply to close the gender gap if not completely eradicate women under-representation existing in most countries including Ghana. Ironically, Ghana's population is made up of over 52% females but has less than 10% of females occupying political and economic positions within the country. This study "Women and Democracy in Ghana" analyzes the existing scholarly debate and discussions about the cultural and institutional causes for the under-representation of women within its political system. In effect, the book provides systematic evidence on the under-representation of women in Ghana's parliament from independence in 1957 to the current legislature elected in December of 2008. Also included in the book is the tabular representation of women in Ghana's parliament from 1957 to present. The research reveals that the under-representation of women within the political system has contributed in undermining Ghana's democratic regime.

There are a number of transitions and crises periods in the life span of every individual and adolescence represents one of these periods where great strain and sometimes confusion results. In the Winneba municipality in Ghana for instance, it has been noted that majority of the students in the senior high schools, come from different regions who attend school in this municipality. As a result, it has been noted that they spend most of their time with their peers than with their parents; since they are resident students. In view of that it is assumed their peers have great influence on their behaviours. It is upon this note that the researcher would like to investigate into peer support mediating adolescents' psychosocial problems and their self-concept. This analysis should help counsellors to be aware of the prevailing psychosocial problems of adolescents in the municipality and thereby find ways of improving their services to assist them in their schools. It should help create the awareness of parents, teachers and guidance and counselling coordinators about the extent to which the peer group influence the adolescents' self-concept and also the need to develop the self-concept.

Theorists in education recommend multicultural education and cultural competence training as a way to address the achievement gap, especially in urban schools serving large populations of students of color. It is assumed that more training for educators can alleviate the issues present in these schools. Most theory has not been incorporated into practice, especially in secondary schools. Theorists continue to advocate for such educational methods, but their recommendations ignore the political and historical context of urban schools. Most research does not address the perceptions of those who practice in the field. Those who work in these urban, high-poverty schools can lend a perspective that is absent in most of the literature, and can help explain why these recommendations are not implemented as recommended.

Discover how high-performing systems shape teaching quality around the world Producing highly skilled and committed teachers is not the work of a single innovative school or the aggregation of heroic individuals who succeed against the odds. In high-performing countries, the opportunities for teachers to learn sophisticated practices and continue to improve are embedded systemically in education policies and practices. Empowered Educators describes how this seemingly magical work is done—how a number of forward-thinking educational systems create a coherent set of policies designed to ensure quality teaching in all communities. . . and how the results are manifested in practice. Spanning three continents and five countries, Empowered Educators examines seven jurisdictions that have worked to develop comprehensive teaching policy systems: Singapore and Finland, the states of New South Wales and Victoria in Australia, the provinces of Alberta and Ontario in Canada, and the province of Shanghai in China. Renowned education expert Linda Darling-Hammond and a team of esteemed scholars offer lessons learned in a number of areas that shape the teaching force and the work of teachers, shedding unprecedented light on areas such as teacher recruitment, preparation, induction and mentoring, professional learning, career and leadership development, and more. Find out how quality teaching is developed and conducted across the globe Discover a common set of strategies for developing, supporting, and sustaining the ongoing learning and development of teachers and school leaders See how high-performing countries successfully recruit and train educators Understand why the sharing of expertise among teachers and administrators within and across schools is beneficial A fascinating read for researchers, policymakers, administrators, teacher educators, pre-service teachers and leaders, and anyone with an interest in education, this book offers a rare glimpse into the systems that are shaping quality teaching around the world.

A volume in Issues in Career Development Book SeriesEdited by John Patrick and Grafton Eliason, California University of PennsylvaniaCareer Development in the Schools describes a dynamic process that continues to evolve in itsrationale and practice. In many schools and in a variety of scholarly writings, the status of careerdevelopment is controversial. Some observers assert that career development should be seen as aby-product of all of the knowledge and activities that are incorporated in the educational experience. In this view, career development tends to be seen as a random process that happens in anatural, almost magical way, without specific direction or structured form. However, most careertheorists would argue that the career development of students should be a major mission of theschool—a process too important to be only a by-product of scattered learning and activities thatare inherently uneven from student to student. The prevailing contemporary perspective contendsthat career development in the schools should be planned, have its own content derivedfrom research and theory, be systematically executed, and use methods that are relevant to thedevelopmental levels of students throughout elementary, middle, and senior high schools. Tofurther such ends, several national models of content and practice have been formulated by the American School Counselor Association, the National Career Development Revised Guidance Project, and by other organizations to identify the comp...

Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. An exhaustive literature review and analysis of field data collected through administration of questionnaires, interviews and stakeholder consultations indicate that NTFPs are an important tool for addressing poverty amongst marginalised, forest-dependant communities in Ghana. 86% of farmers in SWD depend on ...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Vrije University Brussel (Human Ecology Department), 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The role of medicinal plants in traditional health care delivery in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. More than 250 indigenous trees and plants with healing properties have been scientifically catalogued in Ghana. Unfortunately, the very foundation upon which the medicinal plant species and the traditional health care system survive is threatened by deforestation. The rate of deforestation has increased by 50% over the last ten years, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The current area of intact forest is now estimated at between 10.9 and 11.8% of the original cover and 6.9% of the country's total area. Deforestation is changing the habitats of disease-carrying insects and creating conditions that may help to spread malaria, river blindness and other devastating illnesses. Moreover, since the majority of the rural poor in Ghana depends on traditional medicine for their health care needs, the present high rate of deforestation will have a detrimental effect on the heath care delivery system in the country. Important plant species will be lost to deforestation unless urgent measures are taken. This paper examines the impact of deforestation on medicinal plants in Ghana.

In her groundbreaking history of 175 years of American education, Dana Goldstein finds answers in the past to the controversies that plague our public schools today. Teaching is a wildly contentious profession in America, one attacked and admired in equal measure. In The Teacher Wars, a rich, lively, and unprecedented history of public school teaching, Dana Goldstein reveals that teachers have been similarly embattled for nearly two centuries. From the genteel founding of the common schools movement in the nineteenth century to the violent inner-city teacher strikes of the 1960s and '70s, from the dispatching of Northeastern women to frontier schoolhouses to the founding of Teach for America on the Princeton University campus in 1989, Goldstein shows that the same issues have continued to bedevil us: Who should teach? What should be taught? Who should be held accountable for how our children learn? She uncovers the surprising roots of hot button issues, from teacher tenure to charter schools, and finds that recent popular ideas to improve schools - instituting merit pay, evaluating teachers by student test scores, ranking and firing veteran teachers, and recruiting "elite" graduates to teach - are all approaches that have been tried in the past without producing widespread change. And she also discovers an emerging effort that stands a real chance of transforming our schools for the better: drawing on the best practices of the three million public school teachers we already h...

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Biologie - Mikrobiologie, Molekularbiologie, Note: 1,0, Westfälische Hochschule Gelsenkirchen, Bocholt, Recklingshausen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Undoubtedly, the development of Conceptual Biology, which uses text-mining applications specific to biology is the only way to cope with the increasing amount of free textual data produced in this field. The increasing interest of users in efficiently retrieving and extracting relevant information, the need to keep up with new discoveries described in the literature or in biological databases, and the demands posed by the analysis of high throughput experiments, are the underlying forces motivating the development of Conceptual Biology tools, such as text-mining applications in molecular biology. Therefore the methods of Conceptual Biology have been used for this study to test the hypothesis, that genetically modified foods have no impact on public health. We studied the records of databases and those ones of Literature Based Discovery tools. After the binary scoring of the records with respect to their usefulness, they were also classified by their positive, neutral or negative conclusions with respect to the effect of genetically modified food on public health. In conclusion, we have to deny the hypothesis and therefore to state that genetically modified foods have an impact on public health.
