Markov chains are a fundamental class of stochastic processes. They are widely used to solve problems in a large number of domains such as operational research, computer science, communication networks and manufacturing systems. The success of Markov chains is mainly due to their simplicity of use, the large number of available theoretical results and the quality of algorithms developed for the numerical evaluation of many metrics of interest. The author presents the theory of both discrete-time and continuous-time homogeneous Markov chains. He carefully examines the explosion phenomenon, the Kolmogorov equations, the convergence to equilibrium and the passage time distributions to a state and to a subset of states. These results are applied to birth-and-death processes. He then proposes a detailed study of the uniformization technique by means of Banach algebra. This technique is used for the transient analysis of several queuing systems. Contents 1. Discrete-Time Markov Chains 2. Continuous-Time Markov Chains 3. Birth-and-Death Processes 4. Uniformization 5. Queues About the Authors Bruno Sericola is a Senior Research Scientist at Inria Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique in France. Together with rare-gas fluids, molten alkali metals have always been considered as paradigms of the behavior shown by the so-called "simple liquids". In the last few years, the appearance of new accurate data for the time dependent properties of these systems has led to renewed interest and to the possibility of more stringent tests for our understanding of the dynamics of the liquid state. The study of the microscopic dynamics of simple liquids such as molten alkalies received renewed interest, particularly, from the point of view to the parallel application of inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. They have probed deeper investigations of the microscopic mechanism controlling the dynamical behavior like phonon dispersions and related properties extending to wide range of wave vectors and frequencies. The atomistic computational technologies (computational quantum mechanics and molecular simulations) have revolutionalized the field of condensed matter and began to bridge the gap between fundamental materials science and materials engineering.

Polymers and composites are usually exposed to influence of external factors (temperature, humidity, mechanical loading, etc.) which cause a time-dependent change of their structure and properties due to physical and chemical transformations. Thus, predicting mechanical and thermophysical properties of composite materials, it is necessary to consider results of research about structure and properties time-dependent variability of polymer resins under the influence of external factors. The aim of the work was to establish features of moisture absorption and to estimate influence of the absorbed moisture on mechanical and thermophysical properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites. Elastic characteristics of NC were experimentally investigated and described using Halpin-Tsai and Norris micromechanical models considering morphological features of filler particles. Viscoelastic behavior of epoxy resin and NC was analyzed after long-term moisture influence by means of linear integral equation of Boltzmann-Volterra considering a principle of moisture-time analogy. Application of thermomechanical analysis allowed establishing basic regularities for glass transition temperature for NC.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 3.67, , course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: The study examined the impact of government fiscal and monetary policies on economic growth within the period of 33 years (1981-2014). Time series data were derived from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, while the method of analysis was the Johansen Cointegration test, vector error correction method and the Wald test of coefficient. The result of the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between explanatory variables (government expenditure, interest rate and money supply) taken jointly and the dependent variable (real gross domestic product) in the long run. The coefficient of error correction term is -0.02 showing a 2% yearly adjustment towards the long run equilibrium. This proves that there is a relationship between the dependent variable- real gross domestic product and the independent variables - government expenditure, money supply and interest rate in the long run. The estimated coefficients of the short run model indicate no significant relationship between the dependent variable real gross domestic product and independent variables government expenditure, money supply and interest rates taken together but individually a short run relationship exist between the fiscal variable (government expenditure) and real GDP and between the monetary variable (money supply and interest rate) and rea...

An introductory textbook covering the fundamentals of linear finite element analysis (FEA) This book constitutes the first volume in a two-volume set that introduces readers to the theoretical foundations and the implementation of the finite element method (FEM). The first volume focuses on the use of the method for linear problems. A general procedure is presented for the finite element analysis (FEA) of a physical problem, where the goal is to specify the values of a field function. First, the strong form of the problem (governing differential equations and boundary conditions) is formulated. Subsequently, a weak form of the governing equations is established. Finally, a finite element approximation is introduced, transforming the weak form into a system of equations where the only unknowns are nodal values of the field function. The procedure is applied to one-dimensional elasticity and heat conduction, multi-dimensional steady-state scalar field problems (heat conduction, chemical diffusion, flow in porous media), multi-dimensional elasticity and structural mechanics (beams/shells), as well as time-dependent (dynamic) scalar field problems, elastodynamics and structural dynamics. Important concepts for finite element computations, such as isoparametric elements for multi-dimensional analysis and Gaussian quadrature for numerical evaluation of integrals, are presented and explained. Practical aspects of FEA and advanced topics, such as reduced integration procedures, mixed finite elements and verification and validation of the FEM are also discussed. Provides detailed derivations of finite element equations for a variety of problems. Incorporates quantitative examples on one-dimensional and multi-dimensional FEA. Provides an overview of multi-dimensional linear elasticity (definition of stress and strain tensors, coordinate transformation rules, stress-strain relation and material symmetry) before presenting the pertinent FEA procedures. Discusses practical and advanced aspects of FEA, such as treatment of constraints, locking, reduced integration, hourglass control, and multi-field (mixed) formulations. Includes chapters on transient (step-by-step) solution schemes for time-dependent scalar field problems and elastodynamics/structural dynamics. Contains a chapter dedicated to verification and validation for the FEM and another chapter dedicated to solution of linear systems of equations and to introductory notions of parallel computing. Includes appendices with a review of matrix algebra and overview of matrix analysis of discrete systems. Accompanied by a website hosting an open-source finite element program for linear elasticity and heat conduction, together with a user tutorial. Fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis: Linear Finite Element Analysis is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate students in civil, aerospace and mechanical engineering, finite element software vendors, as well as practicing engineers and anybody with an interest in linear finite element analysis.

2014 Reprint of 1920 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The "motivation" of this book is the author's conviction that crowd formation and crowd thinking are daily becoming a more serious menace to civilization. "I know of nothing," he says (p. 6), "which today so menaces not only the values of civilization, but also the achievement of personality and true knowledge of self as the growing habit of behavior as crowds." Gustave Le Bon was the first to study seriously the crowd phenomenon. Le Bon described the emotional nature of the crowd man and suggested the importance of unconscious motivation. Martin followed up on Le Bon's account and improved the analysis by applying the concepts of Freudian psychology to the crowd man. In 1924 Floyd H. Allport contributed another important analysis of the mechanisms of crowd behavior. Both Martin and Allport succeeded in reducing the problem of crowd psychology to the problem of individual behavior under special types of motivation. Although many of the same mechanisms may be found in all crowds, they operate to produce different end results depending upon the motivational basis and the total social situation. Insufficient attention has been given to the various crowd patterns.

In particular, sections on nonstationary panel data analysis and a discussion on the distinction between deterministic and stochastic trends have been added. Three new chapters on long-memory discrete-time and continuous-time processes have also been created, whereas some chapters have been merged and some sections deleted. The first eleven chapters of the first edition have been compressed into ten chapters, with a chapter on nonstationary panel added and located under Part I: Analysis of Non-fractional Time Series. Chapters 12 to 14 have been newly written under Part II: Analysis of Fractional Time Series. Chapter 12 discusses the basic theory of long-memory processes by introducing ARFIMA models and the fractional Brownian motion (fBm). Chapter 13 is concerned with the computation of distributions of quadratic functionals of the fBm and its ratio. Next, Chapter 14 introduces the fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, on which the statistical inference is discussed. Finally, Chapter 15 gives a complete set of solutions to problems posed at the end of most sections. This new edition features: • Sections to discuss nonstationary panel data analysis, the problem of differentiating between deterministic and stochastic trends, and nonstationary processes of local deviations from a unit root • Consideration of the maximum likelihood estimator of the drift parameter, as well as asymptotics as the sampling span increases • Discussions on not only nonstationary but also noninvertible time series from a theoretical viewpoint • New topics such as the computation of limiting local powers of panel unit root tests, the derivation of the fractional unit root distribution, and unit root tests under the fBm error Time Series Analysis: Nonstationary and Noninvertible Distribution Theory, Second Edition, is a reference for graduate students in econometrics or time series analysis. Systematically presents the input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) analysis of dynamical systems, covering issues of analysis, design and robustness The interest in finite-time control has continuously grown in the last fifteen years. This book systematically presents the input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) analysis of dynamical systems, with specific reference to linear time-varying systems and hybrid systems. It discusses analysis, design and robustness issues, and includes applications to real world engineering problems. While classical FTS has an important theoretical significance, IO-FTS is a more practical concept, which is more suitable for real engineering applications, the goal of the research on this topic in the coming years. Key features: Includes applications to real world engineering problems. Input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) is a practical concept, useful to study the behavior of a dynamical system within a finite interval of time. Computationally tractable conditions are provided that render the technique applicable to time-invariant as well as time varying and impulsive (i.e. switching) systems. The LMIs formulation allows mixing the IO-FTS approach with existing control techniques (e. g. H∞ control, optimal control, pole placement, etc.). This book is essential reading for university researchers as well as post-graduate engineers practicing in the field of robust process control in research centers and industries. Topics dealt with in the book could also be taught at the level of advanced control courses for graduate students in the department of electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, aeronautics and astronautics, and applied mathematics.

Complex behavior models (plasticity, cracks, visco elascticity) face some theoretical difficulties for the determination of the behavior law at the continuous scale. When homogenization fails to give the right behavior law, a solution is to simulate the material at a meso scale in order to simulate directly a set of discrete properties that are responsible of the macroscopic behavior. The discrete element model has been developed for granular material. The proposed set shows how this method is capable to solve the problem of complex behavior that are linked to discrete meso scale effects. The first book solves the local problem, the second one presents a coupling approach to link the structural effects to the local ones, this third book presents the software workbench that includes all the theoretical developments.

The hydrodynamic formulation of Scale Relativity theory is used to analyze the Time Dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. As a result, London equations come naturally from the system, when equating to zero the real velocity, the imaginary one turns real, the superconducting fluid act as a sub-quantum medium energy accumulator, the vector potential, the real and the imaginary velocity are all written in terms of the elliptic function. When solving the resulted system by means of WKBJ method, one gets tunneling and quantization. In other words, scale transformation laws produce, on the motion equation of particles governed by the TDGL equation, under some peculiar assumptions, effects which are analogous to those of a "macroscopic quantum mechanics".

Microdrops and interfaces are now a common feature in most fluidic microsystems, from biology, to biotechnology, materials science, 3D-microelectronics, optofluidics, and mechatronics. On the other hand, the behavior of droplets and interfaces in today's microsystems is complicated and involves complex 3D geometrical considerations. From a numerical standpoint, the treatment of interfaces separating different immiscible phases is difficult. After a chapter dedicated to the general theory of wetting, this practical book successively details: The theory of 3D liquid interfaces The formulas for volume and surface of sessile and pancake droplets The behavior of sessile droplets The behavior of droplets between tapered plates and in wedges The behavior of droplets in microchannels The effect of capillarity with the analysis of capillary rise The onset of spontaneous capillary flow in open microfluidic systems The interaction between droplets, like engulfment The theory and application of electrowetting The state of the art for the approach of 3D-microelectronics using capillary alignment

Strong bonds form stronger materials. For this reason, the investigation on thermal degradation of materials is a significantly important area in research and development activities. The analysis of thermal stability can be used to assess the behavior of materials in the aggressive environmental conditions, which in turn provides valuable information about the service life span of the materiel. Unlike other books published so far that have focused on either the fundamentals of thermal analysis or the degradation pattern of the materials, this book is specifically on the mechanism of degradation of materials. The mechanism of rapturing of chemical bonds as a result of exposure to high-temperature environment is difficult to study and resulting mechanistic pathway hard to establish. Limited information is available on this subject in the published literatures and difficult to excavate. Chapters in this book are contributed by the experts working on thermal degradation and analysis of the wide variety of advanced and traditional materials. This paper addresses the development of an average value based model, for the network dynamics of a predominantly scattered and geographically dependent consumer distribution system. The continuous observation of the load currents in three different phases of distribution transformers, fixation of its average values on real time basis, mathematical model development with the above average value as base factor are the basic steps of this method, which subsequently leads to a time based dynamics. The validation of the so developed model is done by experimenting in a working system.

Belonging to the wider academic field of computer vision, video analytics has aroused a phenomenal surge of interest since the current millennium. Video analytics is intended to solve the problem of the incapability of exploiting video streams in real time for the purpose of detection or anticipation. It involves analyzing the videos using algorithms that detect and track objects of interest over time and that indicate the presence of events or suspect behavior involving these objects. The aims of this book are to highlight the operational attempts of video analytics, to identify possible driving forces behind potential evolutions in years to come, and above all to present the state of the art and the technological hurdles which have yet to be overcome. The need for video surveillance is introduced through two major applications (the security of rail transportation systems and a posteriori investigation). The characteristics of the videos considered are presented through the cameras which enable capture and the compression methods which allow us to transport and store them. Technical topics are then discussed – the analysis of objects of interest (detection, tracking and recognition), “high-level” video analysis, which aims to give a semantic interpretation of the observed scene (events, behaviors, types of content). The book concludes with the problem of performance evaluation.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Art - Miscellaneous, grade: 83%, , course: BA (Hons) Fine Arts, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to understand the underlying motivations and contexts of artists who question the disconnection between urban life and nature especially with respect to aspects of time. The methodology used is largely about the analysis of artwork. The strategies adopted by the artists discussed here vary from critiquing the ambitions of city builders in their pursuit of controlling time to shunning urban time altogether and reaching for the rhythms of nature. In order to ground this understanding of artwork in the contemporary context the thesis explores how contemporary urban life changes our experience of time and how this separates us from the natural world. Theories regarding the relationship of the human, the natural world and the passage of time are covered in order to contextualize this analysis. These include the study of entropy by Robert Smithson, Martin Heidegger's theory of the "earth and the world" and Georges Bataille's ideas about the human impulse to annul the passage of time. The eastern philosophy of Zen and the aesthetics of Wabi Sabi that in many ways corroborate the ideas proposed by western thinkers have also been considered. It was concluded that the connection with the natural world is governed by the experience of time and its relationship to the human ego. The time of the cities is so control...

Earthquake Occurrence provides the reader with a review of algorithms applicable for modeling seismicity, such as short-term earthquake clustering and pseudo-periodic long-term behavior of major earthquakes. The concept of the likelihood ratio of a set of observations under different hypotheses is applied for comparison among various models. In short-term models, known by the term ETAS, the occurrence space and time rate density of earthquakes is modeled as the sum of two terms, one representing the independent or spontaneous events, and the other representing the activity triggered by previous earthquakes. Examples of the application of such algorithms in real cases are also reported. Dealing with long-term recurrence models, renewal time-dependent models, implying a pseudo-periodicity of earthquake occurrence, are compared with the simple time-independent Poisson model, in which every event occurs regardless of what has occurred in the past. The book also introduces a number of computer codes developed by the authors over decades of seismological research.

I model employment search behavior in a dynamic discrete time hazard setting with three possible outcomes: finding a full-time job, finding a part-time job, or staying unemployed (continuing the job search). I find that reemployment wages decrease with the unemployment insurance wage replacement rate. Furthermore, the wage replacement rate depresses the prospect of finding full-time work while increasing the prospect of finding part-time work.

The relative motion between the transmitter and the receiver modifies the nonstationarity properties of the transmitted signal. In particular, the almost-cyclostationarity property exhibited by almost all modulated signals adopted in communications, radar, sonar, and telemetry can be transformed into more general kinds of nonstationarity. A proper statistical characterization of the received signal allows for the design of signal processing algorithms for detection, estimation, and classification that significantly outperform algorithms based on classical descriptions of signals.Generalizations of Cyclostationary Signal Processing addresses these issues and includes the following key features: Presents the underlying theoretical framework, accompanied by details of their practical application, for the mathematical models of generalized almost-cyclostationary processes and spectrally correlated processes; two classes of signals finding growing importance in areas such as mobile communications, radar and sonar. Explains second- and higher-order characterization of nonstationary stochastic processes in time and frequency domains. Discusses continuous- and discrete-time estimators of statistical functions of generalized almost-cyclostationary processes and spectrally correlated processes. Provides analysis of mean-square consistency and asymptotic Normality of statistical function estimators. Offers extensive analysis of Doppler channels owing to the relative motion between transmitter and receiver and/or surrounding scatterers. Performs signal analysis using both the classical stochastic-process approach and the functional approach, where statistical functions are built starting from a single function of time.

Summary, Analysis & Review of Peter Godfrey-Smith’s Other Minds by Instaread Preview: Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith discusses the evolution of intelligence in cephalopods in order to better understand the development of consciousness and cognition. Cephalopods like octopuses and cuttlefish have the most complex nervous systems in the invertebrate world. Examining the similarities and differences between octopus and human brains illuminates what scientists know and don’t know about both. While on a dive off the east coast of Australia in 2009, Martin Lawrence discovered an unusual community of octopuses. Octopuses are generally solitary, but this location, dubbed Octopolis, was home to many octopuses who interacted regularly. The complexity of the behavior in Octopolis demonstrates octopus intelligence. The last common ancestor of human and octopus was probably a worm-like creature living 600 million years ago. This creature did not have a complicated brain. That means that octopuses and vertebrates developed neural systems separately. Intelligence evolves… PLEASE NOTE: This is a Summary, Analysis & Review of the book and NOT the original book. Inside this Summary, Analysis & Review of Peter Godfrey-Smith’s Other Minds by Instaread: Overview of the Book Important People Key Takeaways Analysis of Key Takeaways About the AuthorWith Instaread, you can get the key takeaways and analysis of a book in 15 min...

A balanced guide to the essential techniques for solving elliptic partial differential equations Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations provides a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of the quantitative methods used to solve elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs), with a focus on the efficiency as well as the error of the presented methods. The author utilizes coverage of theoretical PDEs, along with the nu merical solution of linear systems and various examples and exercises, to supply readers with an introduction to the essential concepts in the numerical analysis of PDEs. The book presents the three main discretization methods of elliptic PDEs: finite difference, finite elements, and spectral methods. Each topic has its own devoted chapters and is discussed alongside additional key topics, including: The mathematical theory of elliptic PDEs Numerical linear algebra Time-dependent PDEs Multigrid and domain decomposition PDEs posed on infinite domains The book concludes with a discussion of the methods for nonlinear problems, such as Newton's method, and addresses the importance of hands-on work to facilitate learning. Each chapter concludes with a set of exercises, including theoretical and programming problems, that allows readers to test their understanding of the presented theories and techniques. In addition, the book discusses important nonlinear problems in many fields of science and engineering, providing information as to how they can serve as computing projects across various disciplines. Requiring only a preliminary understanding of analysis, Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations is suitable for courses on numerical PDEs at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book is also appropriate for students majoring in the mathematical sciences and engineering.

With the opening of the Indian economy, many multinational corporations are shifting their manufacturing base to India. This includes setting up green field projects or acquiring established business firms of India. The region of this business unit is expanding globally. The variety and size of the customer base is expanding and the business risk related to bad debts is increasing. Close monitoring and analysis of payment trends helps to predict customer behavior and predict the chances of customer financial strength. The present manufacturing companies generate and store tremendous amount of data. The amount of data is so huge that manual analysis of the data is difficult. This creates a great demand for data mining to extract useful information buried within these data sets. One of the major concerns that affect companies' investments and profitability is bad debts; this can be reduced by identifying past customer behavior and reaching the suitable payment terms. The Clustering and Prediction module was implemented in WEKA - a free open source software written in Java. This study model can be extended to the development of a general purpose software package to predict payment trends of customers in any organisation.
