It will prove frustrating to those seeking magical answers to the complex reality problems and intrapsychic conflicts of typical clinic patients. The authors make it clear that effective brief psychotherapy cannot be accomplished by briefly trained therapists. Most of the experience forming the clinical core of the volume was obtained at the 'trouble-shooting clinic' of the Elmhurst City Hospital developed by Bellak and his co-workers.Издательство: Grune & Stratton

Rodrigo De La Mora Psychological Help Seeking Behavior Among Hispanics - A Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATP) with a Hispanic Sample

The rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the United States and indications of underutilization of menal health care services by this ethnic minority, underscores the need for a reliable instrument to assess the attitudes toward seeking psychotherapy among Hispanics. Fisher and Turner developed in 1970 the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATP) which has become one of the most widely used instruments to measure attitudes toward psychotherapy. However, the ATP was developed and standardized using mainly Caucasian participants. The principal aim of this work was to explore the usefulness of the ATP for Hispanic populations. A factorial analysis of the ATP using answers from 266 Hispanic respondents obtained a factor solution that partially followed the theoretical framework of Fisher and Turner; however, the results also suggested the ATP could be improved to measure attitudes toward psychotherapy more accurately among Hispanics. A second aim of this work was to analyze the effect of income, acculturation, prior exposure to psychotherapy, and gender as predictors of attitudes toward seeking psychological help.

Successful management of patients with treatment-resistant depression is going to require a thorough understanding of the biological basis for both the depression and its failure to respond to standard treatments. This book clearly and succinctly summarizes the latest scientific research and its applications in clinical practice. A first step is a clear definition of what constitutes treatment-resistant depression so that clinical trials and other studies are using common criteria, enabling comparison and meta-analysis of their outcomes. The opening chapter reviews definitions and predictors of originating from different fields and discusses their usefulness in clinical practice and clinical research. The next chapter proposes a new definition, adapting terminology from medicine. Biological classification requires identification of genetic risk factors: with gene variants accounting for 50% of the variance in the clinical outcomes of antidepressant treatments this is clearly a fruitful area of research. Chapter 3 describes several genes already associated with treatment-resistant depression and, while further work is needed to translate findings into clinical recommendations, predicts that genetic prediction of TRD could became a widespread clinical reality within a few years. Most patients with TRD will be treated pharmacologically and three chapters review the latest evidence for pharmacological best practice, including switching strategies for antidepressants, the role of antipsychotics and augmentation strategies to complement lithium. There are two major alternatives to pharmacotherapy: neuromodulation and psychotherapy. The brain intervention chapter summarizes clinical research and experience with electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation and magnetic seizure therapy. The final chapter reviews the literature pertaining to the effectiveness of various forms of psychotherapy in patients who have not responded to antidepressant pharmacotherapy, revealing that patients who have not responded to one or two trials of antidepressant medication have a 30%-50% chance of responding to a focused psychotherapy. It proposes indications for psychotherapy in TRD and summarizes general therapeutic principles.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Psychologie - Methoden, Note: 1, Sigmund Freud Privatuniversität Wien (Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität Wien), Veranstaltung: Das Messie-Forschungsprojekt an der Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität Wien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This study is a new diagnostic approach in compulsive hoarding. It opens a new possibility in that field of research to measure the clutter directly in habitats of compulsive hoarders individually for psychotherapy diagnostics. The Messie House Index (MHI) method was developed directly in empiric field research and in addition to indoor focus group exploration at the psychotherapeutic health care center at Sigmund Freud Private University Vienna weekly for three years. That was a very important work to point out qualitative knowledge in compulsive hoarding research. In that focus group the comorbitiy model was once more approved and figured out the typical symptoms in the hoarding syndrome. Theoretical multidisciplinary discussion is done predominant in the field of ecoethology. First time in compulsive hoarding research this way of sight opens further larger perspectives in this complex disease. It makes a running psychotherapy able to measure periodicly the real state of the human habitat and is also an Index for the habitat functionality, dysregulation and psychological strain.

Peggy Pace Integracion del Ciclo Vital. Conectando los Estados del Ego a traves del Tiempo

Книга "Integración del Ciclo Vital. Conectando los Estados del Ego a través del Tiempo".This book overviews a revolutionary new method of psychotherapy, Lifespan Integration, which Peggy Pace developed beginning in 2002. Lifespan Integration (LI) is an efficient body-based psychotherapeutic method which helps clients recover from traumatic events including childhood neglect and abuse. Lifespan Integration therapy differs from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in that LI bypasses the cognitive mind, and allows ‘learning’ to take place at the body level. ‘Watching’ repetitions of the life narrative permits the client’s neural system to weave new ‘information’ about the passage of time into existing neural networks throughout the body-mind. This re-structuring and re-patterning within existing neural networks retains the memories of past events while incorporating the ‘understanding’ that time has passed. In this book Pace describes the Lifespan Integration method, and cites recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience to support her hypothesis about how and why the Lifespan Integration technique is so effective. This book is not intended to be instructional. Therapists should not attempt to use the Lifespan Integration method until they have completed a Lifespan Integration training program.

Ralf Vogt Beseelbare Therapy Objects

Ralf Vogt presents a new form of body therapy which may be applied as individual and as group psychotherapy. The core of his original concept are ›beseelbare‹ objects. With the help of such objects, typical conflict situations may be performed and problem-specific solutions may be playfully tested. The objects used to that end - for example a cuddly cave into which the patient may crawl - were specifically designed for psychotherapeutic work by the author. In particular, in connection with the work with traumatized patients and with psychosomatically disordered patients, these ›beseelbare‹ therapy objects are an important aid to get access to any blocked or buried affects of the patients. The author describes his method of work with vivid case examples.

Jan Thivissen Counseling and psychotherapy in the United States

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, grade: 1,0 ("A"), Southern Connecticut State University (University of Louisville, KY, USA), course: Independent Study, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: AbstractThis paper discusses differences and similarities among counseling and psychotherapy in the United States. The author describes both professions, their historical roots, definitions, theories, their associations, and services delivery. The description enables the author to draw comparisons with the German-speaking system. It has been found that principally no reasonable distinction between the professions in the United States can be stated. Scholars, practitioners, and consumers are using the terms interchangeably. Further findings indicate a great number of professional stakeholders (associations, their subdivisions and specializations, professions like psychology, social work, or education), what carries advantages and disadvantages for the mental health profession. Based on the findings the author suggests further questions on how different mental health systems might benefit from each other.

Andreas Sofroniou Adlerian Individualism, Jungian Synthesis, Freudian Analysis

If one schematically compares the three principal tendencies in psychotherapy (Freudian, Jungian, Adlerian) with regard to the direction in which their central thought leads, one could say:-The analytical method of Sigmund Freud looks for the causae efficientes, the causes of the later behavioural disturbances. Alfred Adler considers and treats the initial situation with regard to a causa finalis and both see in the drives the causae materiales. In Carl Gustav Jung's case the term 'synthesis' is based on his abandonment of the causal thinking of the alternative psychological methods of treatment. Jungian psychotherapy, therefore, is not an analytical procedure in the usual meaning of this term. Whatever the differences among Freud's, Jung's and Adler's extensive works on the therapeutic methodologies; scientists, artists, thinkers and practitioners accept the great importance of Adler's, Freud's and Jung's studies for medicine, psychology, anthropology, religion, art, history, literature, etc.

Seymour Hoffman Thinking Out of the Box. Unconventional Psychotherapy (Hebrew)

The author, a senior clinical psychologist who has worked in a variety of mental health facilities in the U.S. and Israel for over half a century, presents in this volume of case studies of unconventional psychological treatment interventions, which include the unique use of a mobile chair, "phantom" consultant, co-therapists, clergymen, humor and a projective test, in dealing with challenging cases. The interventions and rationale of the treatment of the patients, that include both adults and children with a variety of pathologies and symptoms in different formats, are clearly presented. It is hoped that this volume will encourage greater open-mindedness, flexibility and creativity on the part of clinical psychology students, trainees, beginning and seasoned psychotherapists, and expand their armamentarium of psychological tools, techniques and interventions in their clinical work. --- "This book is full of unique and fresh approaches to psychotherapy. The clinical material serves as an effective introduction to the new therapeutic approaches the author outlines. A most useful and eye-opening book that will benefit both the novice and experienced psychotherapist." (Joseph Wohlgelernter, M.D, FRCPC; Psychiatrist, Mayenei Hayeshua Mental Health Center, Israel)

2015 Reprint of 1961 Edition. Full Facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Berne is the originator of transactional analysis, which he made famous with his landmark publication "Games People Play." In this work Berne lays the groundwork for a rational method for understanding and analyzing human behavior. "Transactional analysis" (TA), is a theory in psychology that examines the interactions, or 'transactions', between a person and other people. The underlying precept is that humans are social creatures and that a person is a multi-faceted being that changes when in contact with another person in their world. Berne developed the concept and paradigm of TA in the late 1950s and it has gone on to have continuing influence in popular psychology.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers people a chance to create new ways of thinking and behaving in order to improve the quality of their lives. This book offers a practical, step-by-step guide to the technique of psychodynamic psychotherapy, with instruction on listening, reflecting, and intervening. It will systematically take the reader from evaluation to termination using straightforward language and carefully annotated examples. Written by experienced educators and based on a tried and tested syllabus, this book provides clinically relevant and accessible aspects of theories of treatment processes. The workbook style exercises in this book allow readers to practice what they learn in each section and more “actively” learn as they read the book. This book will teach you: About psychodynamic psychotherapy and some of the ways it is hypothesized to work How to evaluate patients for psychodynamic psychotherapy, including assessment of ego function and defenses The essentials for beginning the treatment, including fostering the therapeutic alliance, setting the frame, and setting goals A systematic way for listening to patients, reflecting on what you've heard, and making choices about how and what to say How to apply the Listen/Reflect/Intervene method to the essential elements of psychodynamic technique How these techniques are used to address problems with self esteem, relationships with others, characteristic ways of adapting, and other ego functions Ways in which technique shifts over time This book presents complex concepts in a clear way that will be approachable for all readers. It is an invaluable guide for psychiatry residents, psychology students, and social work students, but also offers practicing clinicians in these areas a new way to think about psychodynamic psychotherapy. The practical approach and guided exercises make this an exceptional tool for psychotherapy educators teaching all levels of learners. This book includes a companion website: www.wiley.com/go/cabaniss/psychotherapy with the «Listening Exercise» for Chapter 16 (Learning to Listen).
