Since the end of World War II, there have been four times as many civil wars as interstate wars. For a small subset of nations, civil war is a chronic condition: about half of the civil war nations have had at least two and as many as six conflicts. The author of this monograph, Dr. David Mason, seeks to spell out what social science research can tell us about how civil wars end and what predicts whether (and when) they will recur. After summarizing research on what factors define the risk set of nations that are susceptible to civil war onset, he presents an analytical framework that has been used, first, to explain and predict how civil wars end- whether in a government victory, a rebel victory, or a negotiated settlement-and, second, whether the peace will last following the termination of the conflict (or, alternatively, the nation will experience a relapse into civil war). Research suggests that the outcome of the previous civil war...

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, University for Peace (Department of Peace and Conflict Studies), course: International Peace Studies, language: English, abstract: Contemporary Cambodia is most likely best known for two things, aid dependency and corruption. The thesis initially seeks to examine the nexus between foreign aid and corruption in Cambodia since 1993, the time when a huge influx of foreign aid injected into the country following the withdrawal of UNTAC, then explores if the correlation of the two encourages the propensity of civil war, and ultimately analyzes if the onset of civil war is attainable in the case that the propensity of civil war is feasible. Drawing from the analysis, the thesis concludes that "Foreign aid, particularly loans, indirectly instigates civil war by partly generating corruption, particularly political corruption, because corruption makes aid ineffective in contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction, while encourages huge economic inequality and chronic poverty, which makes Cambodia more vulnerable and prone to civil war". However, the civil war in Cambodia is manifested or not depends on the motivation and initiative to be resisted and the means of financing the resistant group. Given the status quo of Cambodia, it is possible that the prominent opposition groups such as the opposition political parties can in...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject African Studies, grade: none, , course: International Studies and Diplomacy, language: English, abstract: War is the highest form of political struggle for resolving contradictions, when they have developed to a certain stage either between classes, nations, states or political groups. Hence, the rapport between war and peace is being determined by the approach or position of diplomacy. Since the failure of diplomacy usually laid the basis for the start of war, and after all wars, peace often reign, it is of enormous significance to recognize the important relationship between war and diplomacy. Like all civil wars, the Nigerian civil war was unique in the context of the nation's history. This is because it was the most vivid expression of a country turned against itself. As with civil wars in other countries, the Nigerian civil war can be analyzed within the context of a failed diplomatic act. Hence, this paper discussed the position of negotiation or peace talk before and after the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970. It has also looked at the general impact of diplomacy during the period of the crisis.

A famous American writer's view of the Civil WarCharles Carleton Coffin is now recognised as one the important journalists, authors and polititicians of the American nation. At the time of the Civil War he was working for the Boston Journal and was already an experienced correspondent. Writing under the pen-name of 'Carleton' he witnessed virtually every campaign from the Battle of the Wilderness to the fall of Richmond. Prior to his journalistic career he worked as a civil engineer and regularly assisted the Federal military in the field in that capacity. In this book the reader benefits from a view of the Civil War as seen by an expert observer and translated into words by an accomplished wordsmith. This is a perfect book for those who enjoy journalism and Civil War history. Coffin takes the reader to the battle of Bull Run, action at Forts Henry and Donelson, Pittsburg Landing, operations at New Madrid and Island Number Ten culminating in the fighting around Memphis. A worthwhile addition to every library of the American Civil War.

The North American Indian - or, as they prefer to be called themselves: Native American - history has always been a study full of ambiguous points. Nowadays, when the outlived tribes still live on poor circumstances and try to keep step with our running world despairingly, their unique culture deserves more attention than used to. I created my book with the goal of explore and uncover maybe the most tragic and exciting period of Native American persecutions: in the age of the Civil War. In this synthesis-like work I have tried to demonstrate that the Civil War influenced the Indian Wars in the American West in several aspects. The analysis has been built by three units; The first one is a survey on the Indian history from the beginnings till the 1860s. The middle part contents deep connections between the Civil War and Indian politics. The last chapter presents useful instructions for educational purposes. I recommend this compilation for those who are interested in Native American / Civil War history and politics or simply eager to obtain some knowledge of them and for those who would like to get practical ideas to process this odd topic for school lesson teaching.

Daniel S. Lucks Selma to Saigon. The Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War

2789 руб.
The civil rights and anti–Vietnam War movements were the two greatest protests of twentieth-century America. The dramatic escalation of U.S. involvement in Vietnam in 1965 took precedence over civil rights legislation, which had dominated White House and congressional attention during the first half of the decade. The two issues became intertwined on January 6, 1966, when the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) became the first civil rights organization to formally oppose the war, protesting the injustice of drafting African Americans to fight for the freedom of the South Vietnamese people when they were still denied basic freedoms at home.Selma to Saigon explores the impact of the Vietnam War on the national civil rights movement. Before the war gained widespread attention, the New Left, the SNCC, and the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) worked together to create a biracial alliance with the potential to make significant political and social gains in Washington. Contention over the war, however, exacerbated preexisting generational and ideological tensions that undermined the coalition, and Lucks analyzes the causes and consequences of this disintegration. This powerful narrative illuminates the effects of the Vietnam War on the lives of leaders such as Whitney Young Jr., Stokely Carmichael, Roy Wilkins, Bayard Rustin, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as other activists who faced the threat of the military draft along with race-related discrimination and vio...

Bull Run, Gettysburg, Appomattox. For Americans, these battlegrounds, all located in the eastern United States, will forever be associated with the Civil War. But few realize that the Civil War was also fought far to the west of these sites. The westernmost battle of the war took place in the remote deserts of the future state of Arizona. In this first book-length account of the Civil War in Arizona, Andrew E. Masich chronicles the all-but-forgotten story of the California Column, volunteer soldiers who served in the U.S. Army from 1861 to 1866 and played a key role in creating and shaping Arizona Territory. The Civil War in Arizona is divided into two parts: a lively narrative history of the California Column in wartime Arizona, followed by a rare compilation of letters-originally published in the popular newspaper Alta California-written by the volunteer soldiers themselves. Enriched by Masich's meticulous annotation, these letters provide firsthand testimony of the grueling desert conditions the soldiers endured as they fought on many fronts, not the least of which was an uncaring army command structure preoccupied with war in the East.

An exciting Civil War novel by a former serving soldierFor those who enjoy the fiction of the American Civil War, this book by Charles King will not disappoint. It concerns the 'Iron Brigade,' the black hatted soldiers from the mid-west who through their 'iron' discipline and determination earned themselves an abiding reputation among the infantry regiments of the Army of the Potomac. What make this book especially interesting is that is comes from the pen of Charles King who was not only a prolific author, particularly on Civil War and western subjects, but also a general in the United States Army. His credentials as regards this work could not be more authentic. As a young man he actually served with the Iron Brigade during the Civil War, under the command of his father General Rufus King. The author went on to serve in the 5th cavalry after the war campaigning with Crook and experiencing warfare against the Indian tribes of the great plains and the south west. Recommended fiction from one who witnessed the historical events of this book at first hand.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

David Goldfield Still Fighting the Civil War. The American South and Southern History (Updated)

2277 руб.
In the updated edition of his sweeping narrative on southern history, David Goldfield brings this extensive study into the present with a timely assessment of the unresolved issues surrounding the Civil War s sesquicentennial commemoration. Traversing a hundred and fifty years of memory, Goldfield confronts the remnants of the American Civil War that survive in the hearts of many of the South s residents and in the national news headlines of battle flags, racial injustice, and religious conflicts. Goldfield candidly discusses how and why white southern men fashioned the myths of the Lost Cause and Redemption out of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and how they shaped a religion to canonize the heroes and deify the events of those fateful years. He also recounts how groups of blacks and white women eventually crafted a different, more inclusive version of southern history and how that new vision competed with more traditional perspectives. The battle for southern history, and for the South, continues in museums, public spaces, books, state legislatures, and the minds of southerners. Given the region s growing economic power and political influence, understanding this war takes on national significance. Through an analysis of ideas of history and memory, religion, race, and gender, Still Fighting the Civil War provides us with a better understanding of the South and one another.

This collection of new essays explores the Civil War series and its many tie-in titles from the perspectives of history, political science, sociology, psychology, literary criticism, philosophy, law and education. The contributors provide a close reading of the series' main theme--the appropriate balance between freedom and security--and discuss how that balance affects citizenship, race, gender and identity construction in 21st-century America.

The Civil War of a noted U. S. GeneralAlthough Cox is well known as a chronicler of the Civil War-through books on campaigns, battles and principal characters-this book is entirely different. This is the story of the Civil War as it touched his own life. It is, as he says, 'a narrative by one who was an active participant from its beginning to its end and in which he has deliberately avoided repetition of the contents of his other works'. This first volume begins with Cox's appointment as Brigadier-General of Volunteers commanding Ohioan and Kentuckian troops, and then describes his subsequent experiences in West Virginia, the Kanawha Valley and the battles leading to Antietam and beyond. Cox manages to successfully combine a historian's overview of the whole war with historic events that unfolded in his presence, to create an essential Civil War memoir.

Rhode Islanders served in nearly every major battle of the war, firing the first infantry shots at Bull Run, and some of the last by the cavalry at Appomattox. Over 23,000 Rhode Islanders enlisted in the Civil War; over 2,000 gave the ultimate sacrifice. From 1862 until the second decade of the twentieth century, the soldiers and sailors of Rhode Island also left an indelible mark on the pages of history by writing and publishing many histories of their participation in the Civil War. Indeed, with the exception of Batteries C and G, First Rhode Island Light Artillery and the Second and Third Rhode Island Cavalry Regiments, every unit sent from Rhode Island published a history written by men who served in the organization. Over the last century these veteran-published sources were added to by scores of other books and articles by scholars, buffs, and those interested in Rhode Island’s role in the Civil War. Indeed, Rhode Island has perhaps the greatest written record of any northern state in the Civil War era. This volume represents every known published work (books, pamphlets, thesis, and monographs) relating to Rhode Island and the Civil War published between 1862 and 2018. Lone Star Unionism, Dissent, and Resistance. Other Sides of Civil War Texas

Most histories of Civil War Texas—some starring the fabled Hood’s Brigade, Terry’s Texas Rangers, or one or another military figure—depict the Lone Star State as having joined the Confederacy as a matter of course and as having later emerged from the war relatively unscathed. Yet as the contributors to this volume amply demonstrate, the often neglected stories of Texas Unionists and dissenters paint a far more complicated picture. Ranging in time from the late 1850s to the end of Reconstruction,Lone Star Unionism, Dissent, and Resistance restores a missing layer of complexity to the history of Civil War Texas. The authors—all noted scholars of Texas and Civil War history—show that slaves, freedmen and freedwomen, Tejanos, German immigrants, and white women all took part in the struggle, even though some never found themselves on a battlefield. Their stories depict the Civil War as a conflict not only between North and South but also between neighbors, friends, and family members. By framing their stories in the analytical context of the “long Civil War,” Lone Star Unionism, Dissent, and Resistancereveals how friends and neighbors became enemies and how the resulting violence, often at the hands of secessionists, crossed racial and ethnic lines. The chapters also show how ex-Confederates and their descendants, as well as former slaves, sought to give historical meaning to their experiences and find their place as citizens of the newly re-formed nation.Concluding with an account...

The American Civil War from the saddleThe author of this book was just 17 years old when the shells began to fall on Fort Sumter heralding the coming storm of the American Civil War. Determined to play his part he rushed to enlist in the Zouaves, but instead found himself in the ranks of the New York Cavalry. Although he 'started at the bottom' his zeal earned him successive promotions and a rapid commission as an officer. Meyer's absorbing first hand account takes the reader to war in the ranks of the troopers in blue on many campaigns and battlefields of the American Civil War including Second Bull Run, the Stoneman Raid, Brandy Station, Aldie, Middleburgh, Upperville, Bucklands Mill and many others. Henry Meyer combines the activities of his regiment with intimate accounts of his own experiences to create a fine eyewitness view of the war of the Union horse soldiers. A story of war, love and espionage during the Civil WarAlthough this book is not strictly one of Altsheler's American Civil War series, Leonaur have chosen to include it within its collection of the authors novels on this popular topic. The subject matter of the story is still, of course, the great war between the states. The action takes place in and around Richmond, the beleaguered Confederate capital, in the closing stages of the war as the Union forces press ever closer. A young Confederate officer is given leave to visit his family and-after so long on campaign-his eyes are inevitably drawn to the beautiful women of the South. There are old flames to renew his interest, but also an unknown, strange and enigmatic beauty. Is she merely aloof or is there more to this mystery woman? It is clear Union spies are at work in the city. Important documents are missing. Could it be that she is an enemy agent? As attraction turns to love, loyalties are blurred and the action turns to the battlefield, this novel becomes a highly entertaining read and a fitting companion to Altsheler's eight novel Civil War series.

A collection of "almost lost" episodes from the U.S. Navy in the Civil War--most of which have lain hidden for 150 years. Navy spies, cattle raids, deep inland recons and shore assaults as well as a daunting battle on the far side of the planet--Civil War history you've never read before. Included in this new research is the story of Monitor's Unknown Mission; the first all-black Navy crew (months before the Emancipation Proclamation); and the solution to the riddle of the First Battle of Fort Butler. There are no "big name" battles here--just the story of the many critical roles played by the U.S. Navy, told through small-unit actions. After a century and a half, these stories are something new in Civil War history.

2014 Reprint of 1934 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "The Civil War in France" was a pamphlet written by Karl Marx as an official statement of the General Council of the International on the character and significance of the struggle of the Parisian Communards in the French Civil War of 1871. In 1891, on the 20th anniversary of the Paris Commune, Engels put together a new edition of the work. He wrote an introduction to this edition, emphasizing the historical significance of the experience of the Paris Commune, and its theoretical generalization by Marx in "The Civil War in France," and also providing additional information on the activities of the Communards from among the Blanquists and Proudhonists. Engels also decided to include earlier material by Marx made for the International - in this way providing additional historical background to the Commune from Marx's account of the Franco-Prussian War. For Marx, the history of the Paris Commune caused him to reassess the significance of some of his own earlier writings.

LEVIATHAN or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil-commonly referred to as Leviathan-is a book written by Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and published in 1651 (revised Latin edition 1668). Its name derives from the biblical Leviathan. The work concerns the structure of society and legitimate government, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory. Leviathan ranks as a classic western work on statecraft comparable to Machiavelli's The Prince. Written during the English Civil War (1642-1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and the brute situation of a state of nature ("the war of all against all") could only be avoided by strong undivided government... (more on www.wsiehouse-classics.com)

Germans in the Civil War. The Letters They Wrote Home

4889 руб.
German Americans were one of the largest immigrant groups in the Civil War era, and they comprised nearly 10 percent of all Union troops. Yet little attention has been paid to their daily lives--both on the battlefield and on the home front--during the war. This collection of letters, written by German immigrants to friends and family back home, provides a new angle to our understanding of the Civil War experience and challenges some long-held assumptions about the immigrant experience at this time. Originally published in Germany in 2002, this collection contains more than three hundred letters written by seventy-eight German immigrants--men and women, soldiers and civilians, from the North and South. Their missives tell of battles and boredom, privation and profiteering, motives for enlistment and desertion and for avoiding involvement altogether. Although written by people with a variety of backgrounds, these letters describe the conflict from a distinctly German standpoint, the editors argue, casting doubt on the claim that the Civil War was the great melting pot that eradicated ethnic antagonisms.
