Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg (Institut für Journalistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft), language: English, abstract: In these difficult times of the European sovereign debt crisis, this project aims at exploring the effect of this unprecedented crisis situation onto the sense of a European identity. For this purpose, the research Question has been formulated as follows: How has a sense of European identity been affected by the European sovereign debt crisis? The notion of a European identity which lies at the heart of this study is everything but new to the policy makers in Brussels, to social theorists and to political scientists from around the globe. As elusive as the concept of a European identity might first appear, the sheer amount of academic publications, research projects, think tanks and media coverage that have contemplated the notion of European identity, indicate its fundamental importance to the future of the European project and its institutions. Given the fundamentally altered circumstances, which Europe has been facing since the onset of the European debt crisis in late 2009, it becomes necessary to reassess the contemporary state of an evolving sense of European identity. As large parts of the Academic community and various EU lead polls have suggested, the interplay between national and supra-national "imagined communities" and the E...

This is a book about the crisis of the European integration project as seen from the vantage point of people's movements across and to the European continent. But why should the issue of refugees or of migration have anything to do with the dynamics of the integration or disintegration of the European Union? If anything, the existing global refugee protection regime was conceived in Europe at about the time when Europe began to integrate: It was seen as a moral imperative in the context of European solidarity and in the face of crisis. How did refugee protection become so controversial as to usher in a crisis of its own? Why do European governments and their peoples see refugees and migrants as the cause of a crisis in and of Europe? Solidarity, legitimacy, democracy, welfare, rights: How has refugee migration undermined European positions on all that has defined EU integration so far? This collection engages with these questions by focusing on the construction of the crisis narrative, offering an insight into distinctly European perspectives on and analyses of political responses to refugees, migration, and economic challenges. The aim of the volume is to provide an empirical and thematic context for understanding the link between refugee migration and the overpowering perception of Europe in crisis.

The end of the past decade meant a new beginning to the European Union. The signature of the Treaty of Lisbon, on the 13th of December 2007, put indeed an end to the crisis that the European Union had been experiencing since the failure of the European Constitution on 2006. However, there was a change that passed almost unnoticed but that could have an important consequence for the future of the Union: the removal of the reference to "a system ensuring that competition is not distorted in the internal market", which appeared in the old article 3 (g) of the European Community Treaty, and its subsequent replacement by a protocol. Which consequence will have this removal on the current European competition policy? Does it open a new era for competition in Europe or was it only a mere political concession made in order to end the crisis? The aim of this book is to find an answer to these questions. The author, after having recalled the history of what we call the competition principle, envisages different possibilities with objectivity and critical regard.

This book ventures a critical gaze at the image of the European Union beyond the crisis. Keeping in mind that crises constitute organic parts of all systems, the volume attempts to apprehend the EU's losses, gains, challenges, and opportunities deriving from the crisis and assesses what constitutes a viable and integrated exit from the current predicament. Moreover, through dealing with the EU as an everlasting process rather than a completed edifice, the collection aims at charting the conceptual weaknesses which resulted in a crisis so acute and long-lasting and at opening a discourse on the future and the required reconceptualization of the EU.The project is based on three large and interconnected thematic pillars that relate to the European Union after the crisis:- Facets of parliamentarism in the EU in the context of the crisis,- Political cohesion and institutional integration,- Perceptions, images, stereotypes, and their impact on the process of social and political integration of the EU.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 1,3, University of Lisbon (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences), course: North American Policy, language: English, abstract: The Cuban Missile Crisis symbolizes a real showdown between two superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union. Until today, the puzzling events occurred in the crisis prompt numerous questions, particularly in the scientific area. This research paper, therefore, aims the conduction of illustrating the main happenings during the crisis in order to be able to analyze them by using the three Conceptual Models developed by Graham T. Allison and Philip Zelikow. Allison and Zelikow use these models to give an adequate explanation of how the process of decision-making proceeds, taking the crisis as a case study and answering three main questions: Why did the Soviet Union decide to place offensive missiles in Cuba? Why did the United States respond to the missile deployment with a blockade? Why did the Soviet Union withdraw the missiles? For a better evaluation, this research paper thus, contextualizes firstly the Cuban Missile Crisis by explicating occurrences in the Cold War. Secondly, the suspenseful thirteen days during the Cuban Missile Crisis will be illuminated. Thirdly, in the last chapter, the models are outlined and used to answer the three puzzling questions stated above.

The preservation of the Monetary Union for Europe is linked to the future of a whole continent. The currency crisis impacts everybody. It is unequivocal that major efforts were necessary to prevent the break-up of the euro area. However, some of the countermeasures led to disagreements and fierce criticism. A long-term solution must be found. Many proposals haven been contributed in order to do so but are they both expedient and agreeable? This publication approaches this question by beginning with a brief theoretical introduction about the fundamental advantages and disadvantages of the Monetary Union. Based on this, the history of the crisis of the euro system is described. It becomes clear that a key problem in finding a solution is the disagreement about the causes of the currency crisis. Further chapters summarize which rescue measures were used and analyze how they are already solving the weaknesses of the euro. Here, the reader will see that there is a long way before the Monetary Union stands on a stable framework. In this book, suggested solutions are discussed and analyzed, before finally a combination of different solutions is emphasized. In this book:- Monetary Union,- Currency Crisis,- Euro Reforms,- History of the euro.

Power shifts happened several times throughout history, but they do not occur frequently and are often connected with the use of force. Presently, there is a power shift from the western industrialized states, e.g., from member states of the European Union (EU), to Asian states, in particular China. However, in spite of this growth, it is disputed to what extent the rise of these economies already transcended into power and how it will develop in the future. What is clear by now is that the recent global financial and economic crisis was the worst one in post World War II history. The crisis emerged in the United States and then spread to the EU and to other countries. It led to quickly rising public debt levels in western industrialized states.During this time, states like China or India extended their participation within global economic governance foras, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the G20. This raises the question of how the power of the European Union within these international institutions was affected by the crisis? The purpose of this publication is to research this question.Consequently, the examination is situated within the domain of the global financial and economic crisis, the shift of power and the power of the EU in international institutions. In order to give an answer to the above stated question, the power shift in international institutions during the time of crisis is to be assessed. The IMF and the G20 are analyzed in depth in order to...

The European debt crisis has posed a challenge for many people to understand, both non-Europeans and Europeans alike. Even economists, finance specialists and market commentators are often uncertain of its causes or in the interpretation of events ongoing, or of past events that have taken place that then shaped the current situation. Typically this lack of understanding results from a lack of understanding of how European institutions work, the structure of European politics and the Eurozone, the economics of the financial system, or the relationship of debt markets to current government policies in the EU. The purpose of this book is to describe the causes and outcomes of the European debt crisis (to the date of publication) within the context of three questions most often asked about the debt crisis: (i) what happened? (ii) why did it happen? and (iii) why has the crisis been so difficult for policy-makers to address? The book attempts to answer these questions in a straightforward, scholarly and thoughtful fashion, thereby developing a wider understanding of the crisis in its entirety for the reader. The book is by no means meant to be an exhaustive treatment on any of the issues it discusses. But the approach taken should be useful for those people who wish to better understand the events of the European financial crisis over the past three years but who do not need to acquire an exhaustive background in European institutions, debt markets, history and economic policy-ma...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1.7, Berlin School of Economics and Law, language: English, abstract: The global financial crisis of 2007/08 revealed the necessity of improved stabilisation and regulation of the global as well as European financial markets. In this context, increased attention was given to financial transaction taxes and in 2011, the introduction of a European Union Financial Transaction Tax was first proposed. The objectives for this tax, set out by the European Commission, were tripartite: financial revenue generation, regulative strengthening and the improvement of the efficiency of financial markets. The aim of this thesis is to examine whether the European Union Financial Transaction Tax would be an effective means to curb speculation in the European financial markets, and a suitable tax solution for the European Union. The thesis further analyses whether this tax could increase the financial markets efficiency, and contribute to a fair and substantial contribution of the financial sector to the participating countries' public finances. In this regard, underlying theoretical concepts, potential positive effects of the transaction tax, as well as detriments and shortcomings are discussed.

Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: Distinction, University of Edinburgh (School of Law), course: Regulatory governance in the European Union, language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is threefold: first to establish how the regulatory and supervisory architecture has evolved in Europe over the last decade; second to determine how the shortcomings of the present system affected the onslaught of the financial crisis in Europe; and lastly to evaluate whether the proposed regulatory and supervisory reforms are likely to successfully repair these weaknesses. Part I identifies that the single market objective, combined with the significant integration of European financial services, provided the major impetus for bringing about reform to the regulatory and supervisory architecture of Europe. By investigating the Financial Services Action Plan (FSAP) and the implementation of the Lamfalussy Process, this paper illustrates that the member states and the EU institutions sought to achieve a flexible regulatory and supervisory structure marked by cooperation and conversion towards common standards. However, despite the commendable progress made, Part II shows that the regulatory and supervisory system has not kept pace with the financial integration, and that the current crisis revealed substantial inadequacies of the present system. This paper will demonstrate that the weaknesses in the Euro...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 5, University of Zurich, language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis discusses the sustainability of government debt on a theoretical level with the model of the government budget constraint and its application in a case study. Therefore, the situation of Greece is used as a prime example for the current sovereign debt crisis in the European Monetary Union. It points out with quantitative data, what has led to the high public debt in Greece and what are the consequences of this debt accumulation. For this the sustainability and the development of government debt and its determinants will be analysed. In conclusion, it discusses the options to escape of this sovereign debt crisis for Greece and the European Monetary Union as a whole. In March 2012 Greece received another bailout loan of 144.7 billion euro from the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) and 19.8 billion euro from the IMF in several tranches until 2014 after a worsening recession and the missing implementation of the conditions. In July 2015 the European Commission arranged to mobilise more than 35 billion euro until 2020, while they already paid out up to this point 4.4 billion euro (European Commission 2015). Still the problem has not been solved yet and Greece is still not able to get control of its debt by itself. This dissertation compares the media representations of the European Union (EU) in two of the small member states - Ireland and Bulgaria. Ireland is part of the 'old' member states, which joined the EU with the first wave of enlargement in 1973. Bulgaria is among the newest entrants who became part of the EU in 2007, thus completing the last and biggest so far Eastern enlargement of the Union. Given the recent financial, political and democratic deficit crises in the EU, this manuscript provides a valuable insight into the media portrayals of the EU in two very different member states, thus giving an indication about some of the challenges policy makers might experience when attempting to address diverse media markets, editions and audiences. The study is based on a content analysis of newspaper publications shortly after Bulgaria entered the European Union and before the major economic crisis in Europe took place, thus providing a glimpse of routine coverage of the EU.

The book describes the rationale behind the measures undertaken to mitigate the consequences of the recession and to ensure that a similar situation does not happen again in the future. In the wake of the crisis, various major changes continue to significantly affect the life and social organization of Europeans. For instance, a new ESM with a size financially comparable to that of the IMF was created; similarly, the reforms in economic governance imply much more intrusive participation of European countries in each other's macroeconomic policies. Moreover, the organization, regulation, and supervision of the financial sector have been drastically revamped. The decisions taken by European and national authorities affect the daily lives of hundreds of millions of European citizens and countless more around the globe. An insightful read for anyone interested in understanding the topic and its effect on their lives, the book primarily addresses undergraduate students in their final year and graduate students in fields such as economics, finance, and political science. Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2.0, University of Flensburg, language: English, abstract: The Eastern enlargement of the European Union in 2004 alongside the accession in 2007 of Bulgaria and Romania into the European Union has paved way for a historical shift of the Union , emergence of new borders, and emergence of new relations and policies towards new neighbours. Despite the fact that the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) might be considered as a foreign policy instrument, what seems unknown and less considered is the cost of relationship, intent of the European Union (EU) in relations with new members, interest of both sides, security and stability alongside economic and democratic space. The ENP consolidates the opinion that the limits of Europe is increasingly evasive; the thesis therefore aims at considering or analyzing the EU relations in the view of its implications stemming from the ENP policy toward Ukraine as a member of the ENP.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Institut für Sozialpolitik), language: English, abstract: The financial crisis, which struck the EU countries in 2008, was followed by the severest economic recession since the end of the Second World War, involving a significant drop in GDP (negative economic growth) for most of them. Output growth has turned negative or stagnated in several countries, the impact on labour markets has led to rising unemployment rates and public debt and deficits have soared. In the aftermath of the crisis countries were confronted with a deteriorating social context, which is due to the severity of the economic downturn, the worsening job situation and the increased unemployment. This has resulted in a heightened need for social protection while at the same time making it more difficult to finance. The crisis has highlighted the role of social protection as a social buffer and an economic stabilizer that cushions the impact of recessions. Social benefits have been an essential element of national crisis response in the countries of the European Union. Social security programmes not only act as an important component of the crisis „exit strategy", helping to revitalize the economy but they also protect the most vulnerable part of society. One of the lessons that can be learned from the crisis is that countries and their inha...

With the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the threat of international terrorism - a threat to peace and stability - became evident to the world.Even though this event was not directed against European Union member states, it triggered the expansion of common anti-terrorist laws and policies. This cooperation aimed at fighting terrorism has led to the introduction of legal instruments that do not comply with international and European human rights law. Despite this drastic shift, the question in how far the European Union abides by human rights law in its fight against terrorism has rarely been discussed so far. Irina Wiegand looks exactly at this question. Her book gives extensive background information and yet has high scholarly value. It offers a general introduction on terrorism and an overview of today's legal framework with regard to terrorism and looks at the European Union's responses to terrorism. The main focus of the book is then on the analysis of these responses in the light of human rights law. This scrutiny provides the background of international and regional human rights legislation and continues with the analysis of the current legal practice of the European Union and the European Courts. If you want to know why we cannot agree on the definition of the term 'terrorism', whether states can claim the right of self-defense after a terrorist attack, how the European anti-terrorist legislation developed over time, and whether the European Union violates c...

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, College of Europe (Department for European and Governance Studies), language: English, abstract: In the years 2015 and 2016, the European Union (EU) and (some of) its member states were facing a very high number of asylum-seekers. This inflow revealed the shortcomings and dysfunctionalities of the European asylum system and plunged the EU into one of its biggest crises: Member states could hardly agree on common measures, and different national preferences for dealing with asylum-seekers led to profound and ongoing political divisions. Germany, which particularly was affected by the inflow, sought to 'europeanize' the phenomenon and to distribute the loads more evenly across the EU - but met major resistance. Contrarily to the widely held view - both in the academic literature and the European public - that Germany, in recent years, has shaped and even dominated European politics, it largely failed with its main policy proposals in the refugee and migrant crisis. To uncover the reasons, the present thesis applies an analytical model of 'political leadership'. Based on current academic research, relevant newspaper articles and self-conducted expert interviews, it is argued that there might have been supply but not sufficient demand for successful German political leadership. In doing so, this thesis so far is the only larger academic pape...

European Monetary Union is an entity that unites today 17 member states by single currency - the euro. And since 2008 after the world economic downturn Eurozone has been tested a lot. The economies of several countries have suffered and experienced an essential decrease in GDP. The difference between budget revenues, spending and external debt are the main concerns of countries for today. And Greece has the most difficult situation among those who suffer. This paper researches previous historical examples of the monetary unions, the EMU and its policy-making procedure as well. Events and causes of the current Greek crisis will be examined, and its impact will be shown through the examples of two main Greek industries - shipping and tourism. Another important point to review the crisis is to see what has been done to meet the crisis and improve the economic situation in Greece. Finally this paper has to answer the question if the Greek crisis of 2010 can lead to the collapse of the entire system of the euro and the EMU.

Introduction and Problem DefinitionOn its way from an economical partnership to a political union the EU has faced a long-time debate about its democratic deficits. Discussions and proposed remedies focused mainly on the institutional side of the problem and the ques-tion of how the institutions can be democratised. Since the 1990s the debate about European identity and citizenship attracted the limelight of the political debate within the European Union. However, this paper will neither focus on the institutional nor on the identity part of the debate about the democratic deficits of the EU, but will focus on a dimension in between.Direct democracy, as in the Greek city states, is, because of the size of modern democracies, not feasible anymore. The media is needed to communicate deci-sions (top-down) as well as the will of the people (bottom-up). (Mass-) media creates publicity. On a national level there is a network of print, TV and online media, which creates a tight arrangement of top-down and bottom-up communi-cation: national publicity. I will analyze images and political cartoons found on social media, primarily Facebook because it is the most popular, to understand how Ukrainians view themselves and countries who they consider their enemies and allies.Understanding how Ukraine views the Other helps the viewer to understand how Ukraine views the Self. Gathering a large amount of images allows me to compare them with each other and analyze the opinions that they portray. The findings of my analysis of the images lead to several conclusive statements about the way that Ukraine sees Russia, the European Union and finally themselves. The images show a lot of anti-Russian propaganda, which is significant because there is a connection with the sacrificing oneself for one's nation. Through this analysis I conclude that Ukraine views Russia as an aggressor and invader who is selfish and isn't fair; and Ukraine views the European Union as a place with an ideal economy and policies; it also views Russia as an enemy to both Ukraine and the European Union. Finally, along with how Ukraine sees the two countries, the images show that Ukraine sees themselves as br...

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Saarbrücken (Faculty of Business and Economics), language: English, abstract: The Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were both forced to implement unconventional monetary policy measures as a response to the severe impact of the global financial crisis and its aftermath. In the first stage of the global financial crisis, the conventional and unconventional monetary policy measures implemented by the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were fairly similar. Both central banks focused on providing the banking sector with liquidity in order to restore interbank lending as it was a key element of ensuring a functional monetary transmission mechanism. However, when the global financial crisis transformed to a sovereign debt crisis in the euro area in 2010, the European Central Bank faced increasing divergence in sovereign spreads and the potential insolvency of euro area Member States. Therefore, its unconventional monetary policy measures focused on credit easing by purchasing sovereign as well as covered bonds in order to improve banks' and governments' funding costs. By contrast, the Federal Reserve System massively purchased government bonds and focused on decreasing interest rates and asset prices through the use of quantitative easing.

With the creation of the European super-state, feminist scholars will have to enhance their understanding of the European Union while activists will increasingly focus their efforts upon its institutions. This volume provides a comprehensive examination of EU policy implications for some of the most burning issues concerning women. This is the first book to transcend the emphasis on economics, the conventional basis for EU public policy discussions, thus providing a basis upon which one can begin to assess the politics of European integration from a feminist perspective.

This book is a selection of the author's comments on this process written in the past fifteen years. All the chapters are dealing with the relationship between the infrastructure network and the economic development of the area covered. The author is argueing that a better prepared and focused European support could lead to the construction of a different network pattern much more fitting to the real needs of the whole area in order to promote the European competitiveness. A missed connection pattern is harmful to the performance of the whole European Union, but especially harmful for the new member states and also for the countries accessing in the future.

The contributors to this volume assess the impact of this historical development on gender relations in the new and old EU member states. Instead of focusing on either western or eastern Europe, this book investigates the similarities and differences in diverse parts of Europe. Although initially limited, gender equality was part of the original framework of the European Union, an organization often more open than national governments to feminist demands, as this volume illustrates with case studies from eastern and western Europe. The enlargement process thus provides some important policy instruments for increasing equality between men and women.Silke Roth obtained her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Connecticut. With the current situation in the European Monetary Union in mind, a Monetary Union in other parts of the world seems highly inadvisable. Nevertheless, Africa has some of the oldest Monetary arrangements in the world, dating back to the beginning of the 19th century. Is Africa particularly qualified for a Monetary Union? And furthermore, what features are necessary to make Monetary Arrangements between countries endurable? This study evaluates the prospects and the feasibility of a monetary union in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from an economic point of view. Both the theory of optimum currency areas and the recent example of the European Monetary Union are employed to analyze the pros and cons of monetary unification. The theoretical implications are operationalized, first, by a broad analysis of economic and socio graphic data, and second, by estimating the degree of structural shock synchronization between SADC countries. Results obtained by an Autoregressive and Vector Autoregressive model indicate that a monetary union which includes all SADC members is neither desirable nor feasible in the foreseeable future. However, the study concludes that a small subset of countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia, could gain from forming a smaller monetary union.

The first chapter introduces EMU from a European perspective, as the next logical step to complete the Single Market and as a source of economic advantages for EU member states. However, it is also an important vehicle for the aim of political union. Hence, in view of Germany′s traditional position in Europe, the progress EMU represents in terms of achieving European unity is a significant factor that led to the unequivocal attitude of the Kohl government favour of EMU.The absolute necessity for Germany to advance the integration process was emphasised by German unification and the resulting political impossibility to refuse EMU as international support for a unified Germany was tied to stronger European integration. In addition, the common currency has benefits for Germany′s foreign trade reliant economy which seem to outweigh the economic doubts. Nevertheless, these concerns did play a role in defining political approaches and have influenced both the opposition′s stance and ...

In the past ten years, huge economic imbalances among US-Asia as well as eurozone countries have built up which have led to numerous crisis situations. Thus, the goal of this book is to find out if economic imbalances are sustainable or if they need to be rebalanced? What role do distinct national policies play? The author is going to compare the imbalances of US-China with the intra-euro imbalances of Germany, Spain and Italy. Firstly, the historical development of the economic imbalances is presented in order to point out the unprecedented height of the mentioned imbalances. Furthermore, the author is analyzing the causes of imbalances by presenting the development of the competitiveness, the saving-/investment rates, the financial markets as well as the different national policies. It is shown that distinct national policies were the underlying causes for the development of such high economic imbalances. After having seen the historical development as well as the causes, the author describes the possible costs and benefits of having imbalances as well as the implications of the global financial crisis and the current European crisis. Due to the increasing globalization, the financial crisis spread fast and led to huge losses and decreasing investor's trust in European countries. This resulted in the European crisis which subsequently could also endanger the global economy. Because of the huge crisis' impact, traditional and alternative balancing channels are also c...

The idea of the integration we live in today was born after World War II. At the outset of the European integration there were only six countries establishing the European Coal and Steel Community and their aim was to maintain peace and prosperity. In order to fulfil this aim, supranational institutions were established. With the development of the European Community more and more power has been delegated to the supranational institutions and therefore from the 1980s articles, studies, books started to be published dealing with the European Community from a democratic point of view. A number of critics were written stating that the integration suffers from a democratic deficit. The question raised in this book is the following: Is there a democratic deficit in the EU? In order to receive an answer, first the term democratic deficit itself is focused on (what is meant by it and how it relates to the European Union) and then the EU Institutions and the Constitutional Treaty of the European Union are concentrated on. This work should especially be useful for anyone who is interested in politics and wants to study the system of the EU more deeply.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: "One Market - One Money." On paper the future of European Monetary Integration never looked more promising than now: ·The Maastricht Treaty has finally been ratified by all twelve member governments in mid October 1993, even the most sceptical states Denmark and the U.K., so that the aim of European Monetary Union (E.M.U.) rests on a solid legal basis now. ·On January 1, 1994 the European Monetary Institute (E.M.I.) began its operations with a goal of intensifying monetary coordination in Europe.} In addition, the E.M.I. will prepare the conceptual groundwork for the activities of the future European Central Bank (E.C.B.). ·The " Road to a common Europe" has been opened and monetary policy roadsigns point in the direction of European Monetary Union with a single currency. In reality, the prospects of the achievement of E.M.U. have deteriorated in the course of 1993 and under present conditions the likelihood of a failure of the Maastricht Treaty is quite high. The European currency crises in September 1993 led to realignments within the European Monetary System (E.M.S.) and fluctuation margins were widened to +/- 15 per cent. These events and a breakdown of cooperation between national monetary authorities have raised doubts about the feasibility of the timetable for moving towards full monetary union. This thesis provides an overview of the progress towards a monetary union, including a common currency, in the European Community (E.C.)...

Financial crises have existed at all times. Let us just think back to the biggest crisis ever in the year 1929, the Great Depression. The current financial crisis began as a real estate crisis in the United States of America in summer of 2007. About one year later, the crisis had spread over the whole world. This crisis is said to be the biggest since the Great Depression in 1929. Due to globalization and the interconnectedness of markets, soon the whole world got negatively affected by the current financial crisis. Among others, Chile and Austria had to register sharp economic slowdowns. The objective of the author is it to define which country will be more affected of the current crisis: Chile, the emerging economy that was said to be very well prepared to face the crisis; or Austria, the rich and well-developed, European economy?

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: „Power is shifting at the global level but it is doing so unevenly across different dimensions." The statement of Giovanni Grevi describes the phenomenon of power shift. Such shifts happened multiple times throughout history. But they do not occur frequently and are often connected with use of force. At present there is a power shift from the western industrialized states, e.g. from member states of the European Union (EU), to Asian states, in particular China. This shift builds on the fast economic growth of the emerging countries. Yet, in spite of this growth, it is disputed to what extent the rise of these economies already transcended into power and how it will develop in the future. The recent global financial and economic crisis was the worst one in post World War II history, because it led to an economic downturn with unprecedented global depth. The crisis emerged in the United States (US) and then spread to the EU and as well to other countries. It led to steeply rising public debt levels in western industrialized states. Many scholars, like Giovanni Grevi and Roger C. Altman, are of the opinion that the crisis accelerated the recent shift of power. During this course of time, states like China or India extended their participation within global economic governance foras, such as the Internatio...

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim, course: Wirtschaftspolitik, language: English, abstract: Financial regulation has played an unfavorable role in the financial crisis. Many reform proposals conclude from its failure that there is a need for more and tougher rules (Group G30 2009).Consolidating existing regulatory bodies and a centralization of authorities seem to be the ubiquitous answer of many politicians. In the European Union (EU), a reform proposal has gained support by the European parliament (EP) and the European Commission (EC), which would mean additional competences and staff for European bureaucracies. Because it would centralize large parts of regulation and supervision, political arguments focus on the allocation of competences and power. However, it is not sure if the proposed changes would have any effect in preventing future crises. The structure of this paper follows a systematic approach to demonstrate problems with this proposal. At first, I show in chapter 2 that the role of regulation and governments in the financial crisis is ambiguous. What is viewed as market failure was sometimes only a rational response toincentives set by regulation. It is often stated that markets did not work efficiently, and the obvious solution is to rely on governments and regulators to fix the problems. I check if international comparison provides support for consolidating regulatory bodie...

This study aims to analyse the applied crisis management and communication strategies of Volkswagen by evaluating the crisis´ impact on each stakeholder group. To accomplish this, the research adopts a single case study design, and it considers a significant amount of qualitative, secondary data. The research first notes that Volkswagen failed in its crisis management prevention tactics, as it was unable to detect the crisis at an early stage. Moreover, the study reveals that VW implemented several immediate crisis management measures for a quick turnaround management. Instead of concentrating on a specific crisis response theory, it is evident that VW made use of different crisis response strategies. VW took full responsibility for the crisis, promising transparency, but it also shifted the blame onto a small group of employees, suggesting that the company was also the victim of human error. Finally, the study reveals the significant impact of the crisis on each stakeholder group, which reveals that VW struggled to regain stakeholder trust and did not keep its promise of transparency. Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Newer History, European Unification, grade: 1,3, University of Hannover (Faculty of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences/ European Studies), language: English, abstract: Is Turkey a European country? To answer this question, we must first understand what is meant by 'Europeanness': Is it a sense of belonging to jewish-greek-roman antiquity, to Christianity, to the Renaissance and the Enlightement; which is the way the substantialists define Europeanness, or rather a commitment to the universal values (liberty, democracy, respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law) upon which the European Union was founded? The constructivists regard Europeanness as a commitment to European principles, defining the term in a syncretic way. So far, the identity of the European Union has prevalently been defined politically. In answering the question of whether Turkey belongs to the common European cultural heritage or not, it must first be pointed out that there would not have been a European history without Turkey since Turkey is the successor to the Byzantine and Ottoman empires that have shaped Europe. The European Union is concerned by ethnic conflicts that are on its borders and can threaten the security of the EU from outside and inside. Examining the cases of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria and Cyprus, this research investigates to what extent the European Union is committed to ethnic conflict resolution. Hypothesizing that EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more successful than the mediated efforts and the failure of the European Union to assist territorial entities sharpens the secessionist trends, the theories of third party intervention, credible commitment theory and the costs and benefits theory form the theoretical framework of this research. The review of the literature formed basis to understand the EU policies and tools deployed for the conflict prevention in the cases selected, on which the applied theoretical framework created strong bases to make conclusions. The EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more effective. Rejecting the second hypothesis the argument becomes valid emphasizing that EU assistance, substantial or not, does not affect the conflicting territories' decision to secede.

The book examines the socio-economic dynamics of the current economic crisis that have affected Southern European countries in general, particularly Greece and Spain. These dynamics have caused considerable effects in social, political and cultural level and have influenced the marginalised populations of both countries. Since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the beginning of the war in Donbas, Eastern Europe has been facing a migration crisis. Millions of Ukrainians are internally displaced or have fled the country and now face an uncertain future. At the same time, Western-imposed sanctions and the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union have affected Russia’s migration policies. These largely ignored processes have a potential to change the social landscape of the region for many years to come. The aim of this collection is to shed light on the forgotten migrant crisis at the European Union’s doorstep and make sense of the various migration processes in and out of Ukraine and Russia. The book is divided into two sections. The first section deals with migration processes that have taken place within Ukraine or have involved Ukrainian citizens’ migration out of the country, excluding Russia. The second section discusses Russia’s response to the rapid inflow of migrants from Ukraine, its changing migration policies and their effect on migrants, as well as other processes related to the phenomenon over the course of the Ukraine crisis.ContributorsTania Bulakh, Mikhail Denisenko, Joanna Fomina, Michael Gentile, Kateryna Ivashchenko-Stadnik, Marina A.
