Fertility Decline in Developing Countries, 1960-1997: An Annotated Bibliography

With the emergence of fertility declines in the greater part of the developing world, study of the phenomenon has increased profoundly over the last three decades, and a voluminous amount of literature has emerged. Yet our knowledge of the decline is scattered in numerous publications, making sources difficult to find. This bibliography provides a guide to the literature on fertility decline in Latin America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. It will be an invaluable asset for population experts and students wishing to do research on fertility decline. Covering the literature from 1960 to 1997, the book draws on extensive sources including books, articles in leading population journals, research papers, and dissertations. The opening chapter covers the literature on theories and concepts underlying fertility decline. The next three chapters are devoted to the major geographical areas-Latin America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa-and the final chapter looks at general literature on fertility declines in developing countries.

Berlin: Portrait of a City

The spirit of Berlin. A photographic journey into the city's history. Berlin has survived two world wars, was divided by a wall during the Cold War, and after the fall of the wall was reunited. The city emerged as a center of European power and culture. From 1860 to the present day, this book presents the story of Berlin in photographs, portraits, and aerial views. With 560 pages of emotional, atmospheric images, from giddy pictures of the Roaring Twenties to devastating images of war to heartwarming postwar photos of a city picking up the pieces - the Reichstag in ruins and later wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude - his is the most comprehensive photographic study on Berlin ever made. Among the photographs are works by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmut Newton, Rene Burri, Robert Capa, Thomas Struth, and Wolfgang Tillmans as well as well-known Berlin photo-chroniclers such as Friedrich Seidenstucker, Erich Salomon, Willy Romer, and Heinrich Zille (an index of photographers' biographies is also included). Quotations from Berliners and Berlin connoisseurs such as Vladimir Nabokov, Alfred Doblin, Herwarth Walden, Marlene Dietrich, Billy Wilder, Willy Brandt, Helmut Newton, Sir Simon Rattle, and David Bowie give voices to the imagery. More than a tribute to the city and its civic, social, and photographic history, this book especially pays homage to Berlin's inhabitants: full of hope and strength, in their faces is reflected Berlin's undying soul.

''War and Peace'' in Studio Ghibli Films

This book examines Japanese animation films of Studio Ghibli in terms of war and peace. This research mainly focuses on movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki, a 'Japanese master of animation', who announced his official retirement in September 2013. Through the lens of peace research, the author rediscovered the fact that Miyazaki-related animation films deal with actual wars from the First World War to the 2003 Iraq War. This book investigates the following Studio Ghibli animation movies: 1) Nausica of the Valley of the Wind (1984), 2) Laputa Castle in the Sky (1986), 3) Grave of the Fireflies (1988), 4) Porco Rosso (1992), 5) Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and 6) The Wind Rises (2013). From a perspective of peace research and international relations, this study analyzes the relevance of the films to the First World War, the Second World War, the Cold War, the War on Terror, as well as some nuclear related issues in the post-3/11 context. Moreover, this book explores the implications of the case studies for peace education so that Studio Ghibli films can be watched as sources for creating the ‘defences of peace’ inside the hearts of audience around the world.

Look to Brazil for safe, stable investments As the future of the American economy seems to get bleaker by the day, it is tempting to look abroad for business opportunities. Europe and Asia don't provide much hope, but what about somewhere that's both closer to home and sunny year-round? In Brazil is the New America: How Brazil Offers Upward Mobility in a Collapsing World, James D. Davidson shows that the current financial situation in Brazil is a haven for those looking to make money in a world in turmoil. With a population just 62 percent the size of that of the US, Brazil has added 15,023,633 jobs over the past eight years, while the US has lost millions. In a world burdened by bankrupt governments and aging populations, Brazil is solvent, with two people of working age for every dependent. In a world of «Peak Oil» Brazil is energy independent, with 70 billion barrels of oil, 60% of the world's unused arable land, and 15% of its fresh water. Comparatively non-leveraged—and with significant room for growth and expansion, as well as vast natural resources, Brazil is a haven of opportunity. Written by James D. Davidson, the editor/publisher of Strategic Investment and cofounder of Agora and the media outlet, Newsmax, Brazil is the New America details: How the original «America» now embodies the brightest hope for realizing the American Dream while the «Old America» is headed for a dramatic decline in the standard of living Investment opportunities not only for those willing to relocate, but anyone who can consider investing there The cost structure of employment in Brazil versus the United States Brazil has already learned its lesson about the dangers of inflation. Cash has taken the place of credit, and high interest rate returns are now the norm.

The Peloponnesian War is a magisterial work of history written for general readers, offering a fresh examination of a pivotal moment in Western civilization. Desmond Donnelly Struggle for the World. The Cold War 1917-1965

The Cold War has spawned almost as many books as Hot Love. This one has clarity. Mr. Donnelly, the Labour M.P. for Pembroke, England has attempted to trace the degree of frigidity to its source. To his credit, he tells it as a story. People, nations, the immutables of geographic/strategic position are the major actors in a book that could have bogged down in footnotes. An unfriendly Russia has been on the psychological defensive since Peter the Great toured the western countries and brought back technology as his souvenir. With journalistic skill, the author brings Cold War progress up to the current new regime. He is especially good at unsnarling and discussing the many strands of the Red Chinese tangle and its effect on total Russian policy. An English view, but importable.Издательство: St. Martin's Press

A lively, engaging history of The Great War written for a new generation of readers In recent years, scholarship on World War I has turned from a fairly narrow focus on military tactics, weaponry, and diplomacy to incorporate considerations of empire, globalism, and social and cultural history. This concise history of the first modern, global war helps to further broaden the focus typically provided in World War I surveys by challenging popular myths and stereotypes to provide a new, engaging account of The Great War. The conventional World War I narrative that has evolved over the past century is that of an inevitable but useless war, where men were needlessly slaughtered due to poor decisions by hidebound officers. This characterization developed out of a narrow focus on the Western Front promulgated mainly by British historians. In this book, Professor Proctor provides a broader, more multifaceted historical narrative including perspectives from other fronts and spheres of interest and a wider range of participants. She also draws on recent scholarship to consider the gendered aspect of war and the ways in which social class, religion, and cultural factors shaped experiences and memories of the war. Structured chronologically to help convey a sense of how the conflict evolved Each chapter considers a key interpretive question, encouraging readers to examine the extent to which the war was total, modern, and global Challenges outdated stereotypes created through a focus on the Western Front Considers the war in light of recent scholarship on empire, global history, gender, and culture Explores ways in which the war and the terms of peace shaped the course of the 20th century World War I: A Short History is sure to become required reading in undergraduate survey courses on WWI, as well as courses in military history, the 20th century world, or the era of the World Wars.

George Gustav Telberg, Robert Wilton The Last Days of the Romanovs. The Murder of the Tsar & the Russian Royal Family, 1918

The end of a dynastyIt is likely that few of those who contributed to the outbreak of the First World War would have imagined its consequences or predicted which nations would prevail, which would fall in defeat and which would all but cease to exist. Very few would have foreseen the fall of so many of the royal houses of Europe and yet this came to pass; most prominent among them were the Romanovs of Russia. It was almost inconceivable that the Tsar, who ruled over a vast territory and many millions of subjects, would be murdered (or executed, according to one's sensibility) with all of his immediate family such a short time from when the power and influence of the Romanovs had seemed immutable. But this was an age of global warfare on an industrial scale, and of revolution and political change that would affect the nature of war and peace for a century to come. This highly regarded book considers in detail the downfall of the Russian Imperial family, and the authors have drawn upon eyewitness testimony of those who were close to these historic events. The narrative follows the Romanovs to their deaths, ordered by Lenin, in a Yekaterinburg cellar, so preventing the Tsar becoming a figure for the White Russians to rally around. An essential and recommended work for any student of the fall of monarchy, Russian involvement in the Great War and the rise of Bolshevism.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback ...

Andrew Mumford Proxy Warfare

Proxy wars represent a perennial strand in the history of conflict. The appeal of ‘warfare on the cheap’ has proved an irresistible strategic allure for nations through the centuries. However, proxy wars remain a missing link in contemporary war and security studies. In this timely book Andrew Mumford sheds new light on the dynamics and lineage of proxy warfare from the Cold War to the War on Terror, whilst developing a cogent conceptual framework to explain their appeal. Tracing the political and strategic development of proxy wars throughout the last century, they emerge as a dominant characteristic of contemporary conflict. The book ably shows how proxy interventions often prolong existing conflicts given the perpetuity of arms, money and sometimes proxy fighters sponsored by third party donors. Furthermore, it emphasizes why, given the direction of the War on Terror, the rise of China as a global power, and the prominence now achieved by non-state actors in the ‘Arab Spring’, the phenomenon of proxy warfare is increasingly relevant to understandings of contemporary security. Proxy Warfare is an indispensable guide for students and scholars interested in the evolution and potential future direction of war and conflict in the modern world.

A World on Fire

?No two nations have ever existed on the face of the earth which could do each other so much good or so much harm? President Buchanan, State of the Nation Address, 1859 A World on Fire tells, with extraordinary sweep, one of the least known great stories of British and American history. As America descended into Civil War, British loyalties were torn between support for the North, which was against slavery, and defending the South, which portrayed itself as bravely fighting for its independence. Rallying to their respective causes, thousands of Britons went to America as soldiers ? fighting for both Union and Confederacy - racing ships through the Northern blockades, and as observers, nurses, adventurers, guerillas and spies. At the heart of this international conflict lay a complicated and at times tortuous relationship between four individuals: Lord Lyons, the painfully shy British Ambassador in Washington; William Seward, the blustering US Secretary of State; Charles Francis Adams, the dry but fiercely patriotic U.S. ambassador in London; and the restless and abrasive Foreign Secretary Lord John Russell. Despite their efforts, and sometimes as a result of them, America and Britain came within a whisker of declaring war on each other twice in four years. The diplomatic story is only one element in this gloriously multifaceted book. Using a wealth of previously unpublished letters and journals, Amanda Foreman gives fresh accounts of Civil War battles by seeing them through t...

Moscow... The very word has a majestic and powerful resonance. It almost seems to glow with the same brilliance as the golden domes of the city's churches and the burnished frames of their miraculous icons. Moscow's stellar brilliance is symbolic of its historical role as the gatherer of the Russian lands, the first capital where princes and tsars were crowned. Moscow took root in the very heart of the Russian lands and gradually became immortal. In 1812 the city was a sacrifice on the altar of war, yet precipitated the inglorious demise of Napoleons great army. During World War II Moscow suffered a great deal. The battle in the outskirts of Moscow was the first defeat of the Nazis. Although the city was repeatedly burned to the ground, it rose from the ashes each time like the phoenix. For the people of Russia the city was like a burning bush from which the voice of the country's destiny was to be heard in days of great sorrow and rejoicing. The stellar light that surrounds Moscow has never once been extinguished. Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, the bells of the ancient cathedrals, restored to new life, can again be heard ringing out over "great and gold-domed" Moscow. This is the jubilant "voice of time" that resounds with the enormous energy and vigour of the past, while heralding the indubitable attainment of future heights. It is here in the voice of Moscow, as in its image as a whole, that Russia's underlying strength, its confidence in its ability to fulfi...

Marx Karl, Friedrich Engels The Civil War in France

2014 Reprint of 1934 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "The Civil War in France" was a pamphlet written by Karl Marx as an official statement of the General Council of the International on the character and significance of the struggle of the Parisian Communards in the French Civil War of 1871. In 1891, on the 20th anniversary of the Paris Commune, Engels put together a new edition of the work. He wrote an introduction to this edition, emphasizing the historical significance of the experience of the Paris Commune, and its theoretical generalization by Marx in "The Civil War in France," and also providing additional information on the activities of the Communards from among the Blanquists and Proudhonists. Engels also decided to include earlier material by Marx made for the International - in this way providing additional historical background to the Commune from Marx's account of the Franco-Prussian War. For Marx, the history of the Paris Commune caused him to reassess the significance of some of his own earlier writings.

The Promised City: New York's Jews, 1870-1914

Rischin paints a vivid picture of Jewish life in New York at the turn of the century. Here are the old neighborhoods and crowded tenements, the Rester Street markets, the sweatshops, the birth of Yiddish theatre in America, and the founding of important Jewish newspapers and labor movements. The book describes, too, the city's response to this great influx of immigrants―a response that marked the beginning of a new concept of social responsibility.

Henry A. Kissinger Ending the Vietnam War. A History of America's Involvement in and Extrication from the Vietnam War

The Definitive AccountMany other authors have written about what they thought happened -- or thought should have happened -- in Vietnam, but it was Henry Kissinger who was there at the epicenter, involved in every decision from the long, frustrating negotiations with the North Vietnamese delegation to America's eventual extrication from the war. Now, for the first time, Kissinger gives us in a single volume an in-depth, inside view of the Vietnam War, personally collected, annotated, revised, and updated from his bestselling memoirs and his book Diplomacy. Here, Kissinger writes with firm, precise knowledge, supported by meticulous documentation that includes his own memoranda to and replies from President Nixon. He tells about the tragedy of Cambodia, the collateral negotiations with the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, the disagreements within the Nixon and Ford administrations, the details of all negotiations in which he was involved, the domestic unrest and protest in the States, and the day-to-day military to diplomatic realities of the war as it reached the White House. As compelling and exciting as Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August, Ending the Vietnam War also reveals insights about the bigger-than-life personalities -- Johnson, Nixon, de Gaulle, Ho Chi Minh, Brezhnev -- who were caught up in a war that forever changed international relations. This is history on a grand scale, and a book of overwhelming importance to the public record.

This book is a concise and lucid review of the strengths and weaknesses of the British motor industry during the one hundred years since its foundation. Placing the industry firmly in a European context, the author first assesses its achievements before 1960, and then tests the various explanations that have been offered to explain its decline in the past thirty years. He examines the role of government, of the trade unions, of management and of the multinationals, all of which have been seen as major players in the industry's demise.
