This study investigates the Arabic conjunction 'wa' and how it is translated into English. Firstly, it aims to examine the conjunctive relations posed by each 'wa' found in surah Yasin and how they are translated in the surah. It then tries to assess the semantic functions of these 'wa' and whether the English translations match with the meaning in the source text. It was found that the semantic function of 'wa' when translated to English is not always direct (one-to- one or 'wa' = 'and') rather 'wa' can translates into nothing/ zero, or it may be replaced by other conjunctions and prepositions such as 'by', however', while etc. The study also reveals two additional semantic functions of 'wa' which have not been stated before, namely; denying 'wa' (wa + ma, or wa + la), and conditional 'wa' (wa + Law).

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 19.25, University of Tehran, language: English, abstract: This study claims to have studied the pragmatic use and role of hermeneutics and intertextuality in translating esoteric and mystical contexts of the Quran. Thus, it examines and reviews such highly esoteric and mystic contexts by performing a comparative but descriptive analysis on two of the scholarly translations of the Quran ever produced: The classic translation of the Quran by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall (1930) thatwas the first scholarly translation produced by a native English scholar who was also a Muslim convert, and the latest scholarly translation of the Quran by Seyyed Hossein Nasr (2015), a professor of philosophy, comparative religion and mystic teachings. The purpose of the study is to show how the effective use of an intertextual hermeneutics can help increase the functionality and naturalness of the translation that are the keys to reach to the minds of Western readers who would experience a spiritual encounter with the theophany of the religion of Islam that is its central message, the Quran. The study uses Steiner's (1975) four-fold hermeneutic motion to perform a comparative and intertextual examination on four major Quranic themes that are Quranic hermeneutics (ta'wil), verbal/oral transmission of the Quran, Quranic intertextuality, and Quranic imagery. The significance of the study is based on two ...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: A, University of Gdansk (Institute of English), course: Translation studies, language: English, abstract: Humour translation is an extremely difficult process which causes translators many problems. Rendering humour into a different language becomes even more complicated when the translator translates film dialogues for the purpose of dubbing or subtitling. The aim of this thesis is to analyse translation strategies and techniques applied in the process of humour translation in dubbing and subtitling. The analysis is based on two animated films: Shrek 2 and Ice Age. In the thesis the original version of film dialogues is compared with its dubbed and subtitled versions in Polish. The material for the study comes from DVD releases. The thesis is divided into two chapters. In the first chapter the concept of humour is explained and humour translation is described. In this chapter I also provide definitions of translation strategy and translation technique, explain the difference between these two concepts and describe possible translation strategies and techniques in humour translation. In the second part of the first chapter the specificity of audiovisual translation is discussed, and subtitling and dubbing are described as two different translation methods. The second chapter offers a comparison between the Polish dubbed and subtitled dialogue versions. Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), his first major work, is one of the classics of Western philosophy. Although previous translations, in whole or in part, have made the text available in English, they are for various reasons not fully adequate, especially for use in teaching undergraduates. Howard Kainz has therefore undertaken to provide his own translation of major selections from the work, which are tied together by summaries of the parts not translated so as to provide the reader with a sense of the whole. The translated selections include the Introduction, Chapter I on Sensory-Certainty, the sections from Chapter IV on Self-Consciousness, the Master-Slave dialectic, and the Unhappy Consciousness, the introductory section to Chapter V on Reason, the sections in Chapter VI on Ethical Action, Absolute Liberty, and Shiftiness (Verstellung) and the central argument of Chapter VIII on Absolute Knowledge. The translation is based on the 1980 "Akademie" edition of the Phänomenologie des Geistes (Band 9 of the Gesammelte Werke), edited by Wolfgang Bonsiepen and Reinhard Heede, and the German original is printed alongside the English translation in parallel columns (by permission of the German publisher, Felix Meiner Verlag). This edition includes some of the editorial devices used by De Negri in his Italian translation and Hippolyte in his French translation--namely, the use of editorial subdivisions and subtitles to indicate major transitions in the text, plus com...

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: Researchers in translation are most of the time quality conscious and aspire to determine the accuracy of the transferred text. They perceive back-translation as a reliable quality assurance mechanism. However, some specialists maintain that back-translation is not an efficient quality control mechanism. It is, therefore, the purpose of this paper to determine whether back-translation is a reliable quality assessing instrument between the source text and the target one. The researcher applies a hermeneutic phenomenological investigating method within the qualitative paradigm to amplify the findings in this study.

Gerhard Brauer The Problem with Reading Hannah Arendt in English - How Poor Translation Can Impair the Reading and Understanding of Philosophy

The author argues that Hannah Arendt's self-translation of her book The Human Condition, from excellent German into poor English, significantly and unnecessarily compromised its readability. Arendt could have asked for editorial assistance with her English but clearly chose not to do so. On the basis of this premise, the author goes on to suggest that there may be a larger, as yet unremarked, educational problem in the English-speaking world: translated philosophy texts are assigned for reading without making students aware of the impact that translation can have on coherence. The naïve acceptance, by English-only readers, of incoherent wording as though it were a mark of stylistic eccentricity or semantic innovation, is defined as the translation-induced lionization of text or TILT. The problem is further exacerbated by an epidemic of infectious monolingualism in the English-speaking world. While a return to polyglotism in higher education, once a highly valued skill directly relevant to the reading and understanding of philosophical and literary works, would be ideal, the teaching of translation theory plus slow-reading is proposed as a more realistic and very feasible solution.

Libraries in the Arab world only have few books on translation that may instigate the thinking of students and even expert translators. A book of this kind may act as a guide to adopt a practical approach to translation in terms of problems and solutions. Therefore, the book carries out the important and crucial task to prepare and provide students, researchers and translators with a book which deals with the translation of many different kind of English and Arabic texts. The layout of the material in this book is an outcome of the author's interest in translation which originates from his time as a student at Sudan University of Science of Technology. His long experience as a teacher and a translator and recently as an assistant professor of English language and literature has enriched his thinking, sharpened his pen and provided him with chances to have further insight in the field of translation.Teachers of translators can use this book for lessons on theory or translation applications. The practice texts provide vehicles for assignments and homework. The texts can be translated into English and vice versa and can be compared with the other versions then. Last but not least, this book is a way into the fascinating world of linguistics and translation.

In view of the prominent and influential position which The Three Principles of the People holds in the Chinese Nationalist movement and because of the difficulty involved in making passages for an abridged edition, Mr. Price has rendered a complete translation. The translation is faithful to the original and yet clear to the English reader. It will be of help to those who have read the book in Chinese and also to those who wish to know the English equivalents for Dr. Sun's ideas, terms and phrases. Three features not in the original Chinese text have been added in the translation: The number of paragraphs has been increased. A few brief notes have been added to explain generally unfamiliar names and references. A brief summary has been placed at the beginning of each chapter. This translation was originally issued under the auspices of the China Committee, Institute of Pacific Relations, as a volume of the "International Understanding Series" with the hope that it will promote a better understanding abroad of the great forces that are now driving China forward.

It will display history of MT and will deal with some of the major issues in the realisation of MT like the difficulty of translating prepositions or integrating semantics, as well as the importance of real world knowledge. To illustrate these difficulties with examples on a basic level, a practice test with a moderately complex translation engine provided by Google has been carried out and will be explained. Finally, I am going to introduce three of the largest and most powerful translation machines currently in use. I will also give a brief over-view of methods of MT. The aim of this paper is to show that the realisation of the primal idea of machine translation in its original sense, which was to perform translation without human intervention (except during the construction phase of the system), is still markedly far away at present and machines are still unlikely to take over the jobs of human translators.

Emily Apter The Translation Zone. A New Comparative Literature

Translation, before 9/11, was deemed primarily an instrument of international relations, business, education, and culture. Today it seems, more than ever, a matter of war and peace. In The Translation Zone, Emily Apter argues that the field of translation studies, habitually confined to a framework of linguistic fidelity to an original, is ripe for expansion as the basis for a new comparative literature. Organized around a series of propositions that range from the idea that nothing is translatable to the idea that everything is translatable, The Translation Zone examines the vital role of translation studies in the "invention" of comparative literature as a discipline. Apter emphasizes "language wars" (including the role of mistranslation in the art of war), linguistic incommensurability in translation studies, the tension between textual and cultural translation, the role of translation in shaping a global literary canon, the resistance to Anglophone dominance, and the impact of translation technologies on the very notion of how translation is defined. The book speaks to a range of disciplines and spans the globe. Ultimately, The Translation Zone maintains that a new comparative literature must take stock of the political impact of translation technologies on the definition of foreign or symbolic languages in the humanities, while recognizing the complexity of language politics in a world at once more monolingual and more multilingual.

The Grinnell Beowulf is a translation and teaching edition of the Old English poem. Six students at Grinnell College—Eva Dawson, Emily Johnson, Jeanette Miller, Logan Shearer, Aniela Wendt, and Kate Whitman, all ’14—worked with Tim Arner, Associate Professor of English, to translate Beowulf into readable and poetic modern English. What started as a Mentored Advanced Project became an extended collaboration that resulted in the production of an edition designed for both first-time readers and advanced students. The Grinnell Beowulf includes over 165 annotations that accompany the text, as well as introductions to the poem and the translation process.Beowulf is the most celebrated poem of the Anglo-Saxon era. It tells the story of a mighty warrior who defends his friends and homeland from lethal threats both human and monstrous. Beowulf’s battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and an angry dragon are interwoven with scenes of feasts and feuds that provide a view of Scandinavian cultural practices and historical traditions. Though the poem had been absent from the English literary tradition for centuries, Beowulf has become a canonical text in high school and college English courses, thanks in part to J.R.R. Tolkien’s study of the poem and his use of it as a source for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 2, University of Münster (Arbeitsbereich Sprachwissenschaft), course: Dialogue Studies, language: English, abstract: In this paper, the major aspects of and essential developments in translation theory, including the ever-recurring question of what constitutes a good translation, will be explored and the particularity of legal translation will be discussed. In the translation of national law terms, many facets have to be kept in mind. For example, the mastering of the different languages poses problems as does the relation of legal texts to different and specific legal systems and cultures. The focus will then switch to legal language in particular. The opposition between word meaning of everyday language and the word meaning of languages for specific purposes will be clarified. Then, particular difficulties in legal language and translation with consideration of the different legal systems where these translations are used will be illustrated with respect to the nature of legal discourse, its dependence on the legal system and the presentation of possible ambiguities and their interpretation. The problem of a common legislation in the European Union is one of finding a legal terminology that is not influenced by its cultural environment - an entirely impossible enterprise.

Translating prose fiction requires special considerations in terms of style. Preserving text style and features contributing to its uniqueness is elemental in prose fiction translation. This study addresses the use of idioms as a stylistic feature and the way they are translated in prose fiction. Idioms symbolize the dissimilarities among various languages and different cultures. They are usually exclusive to a particular language and specific to a single culture. This peculiarity makes them a thorny issue for translators. The present research is an attempt to investigate English translation of Persian idioms in a novel, Symphony of the Dead. It examines the procedures utilized for translation of idioms, probable losses and compensation of them. There exists adequate amount of research on translation of idioms, yet there hardly exists any research which has included loss and compensation in translation of idioms in its analysis. Dorsey Armstrong provides a new, Modern English translation of the MORTE DARTHUR that portrays the holistic and comprehensive unity of the text as a whole, as suggested by the structure of Caxton's print, but that is based primarily on the Winchester Manuscript, which offers the most complete and accurate version of Malory's narrative. This translation makes one of the most compelling and important texts in the Arthurian tradition easily accessible to everyone-from high school students to Arthurian scholars. In addition to the complete text, Armstrong includes an introduction that discusses Malory's sources and the long-running debate surrounding the manuscript and print versions of the narrative. For ease of use, the text is keyed to both William Caxton's print version and the manuscript version edited by Eugène Vinaver. A detailed index is also included. Dorsey Armstrong is Associate Professor of English and Medieval Literature at Purdue University. Her research interests include medieval women writers, late medieval print culture, and the Arthurian legend, on which she has published extensively. Her book GENDER AND THE CHIVALRIC COMMUNITY IN SIR THOMAS MALORY'S MORTE D'ARTHUR was published by University Press of Florida in 2003. Her 36-part lecture series on "The Medieval World" will be available from The Teaching Company in late 2009. This is an interlinear translation of the Peshitta Aramaic Old Testament poetry books: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon, also known as the Wisdom books. The Peshitta Old Testament is a translation of the entire Hebrew Bible, most likely completed in the 1st century AD, in this author's opinion. Much supporting evidence for a 1st century AD translation is proffered in notes in this and other volumes of the Peshitta Old Testament Interlinear. Most Peshitta scholars believe the translation was produced by early Hebrew Christians. As such, the Peshitta Old Testament would have comprised the first Christian Old Testament, which in conjunction with the Peshitta original New Testament, would comprise the first complete Christian Bible. 348 pages 8x11 paperback.

Teaching computers how to translate from one human language into another is an ongoing research topic in computer science. This book explains the fundamental ideas on which statistical machine translation is based and what you need to get a real statistical machine translation system running. The core of this book is focused on different strategies that will help you minimize the time needed to train your system and to get the best translation possible. We pose the question whether it is primarily the size of your training corpus that determines the quality of translation or if there are other ways that can boost the quality of the translated text as well. What is the best approach to deal with morphologically rich languages? How important is the genre of the text? We use tools like Moses, MGIZA, SRILM and perform empirical analyses to answer these questions.

Firmly grounded in the latest advances of Dante scholarship, Understanding Dante offers an original and uniquely detailed, global analysis of Dante as poet of the Comedy that will be welcomed by those who read the poem in translation as well as by those who study the original Italian text. At the same time, Scott's book will be welcome for its rich and insightful analysis of the whole corpus of Dante's writings, as well as Scott's mastery of the vast sea of critical literature in various languages. Scott bridges the gap that often exists between Dante studies in English-speaking countries and the great tradition of Dante scholarship in the poet's homeland. No work in English about the great Italian poet can rival Understanding Dante's scope in both depth and breadth of close reading and critical vision.

Gerard Brault's 1984 student edition of La Chanson de Roland has become a standard text in classrooms. It contains the text and translation from his 1978 analytical edition along with an introduction illuminating the poem's historical and literary background and significance. This new revised edition contains a new preface and makes significant improvements to both the text and the bibliography. The text and a line-by-line prose translation are printed on facing pages. Brault's editing of the Oxford text includes corrections of the scribe's obvious errors and new readings of garbled or partially obliterated words, and his translation achieves both elegance and accuracy. This new edition pays special attention to the consistency of Saracen proper names. The introduction places La Chanson de Roland in the context of the French epic tradition, Charlemagne's Spanish campaign of 778, the legend of Roland, and the linguistic and literary issues raised by the Oxford text. Among the topics covered are the relation between history and myth, the epic's reflection of prevailing social beliefs and values at the time of its composition (about 1100), and the literary devices employed by the unknown author. The introduction concludes with a note about special problems in editing and translating the Oxford text. An annotated and updated bibliography introduces leading works relating to La Chanson de Roland.

Not that the book is limited to eighteenth-century matters: both the use and discussion of theory, throughout the manuscript, and the good final chapter, in which a historical overlay is added, broaden the scope and utility of Beebee's work, making it challenging and important reading for anyone interested in Richardson or the eighteenth-century, in translation theory and practice, in the comparative history of the novel, and also in the relevance and even the truth of much of modern literary theory."" --Burton Raffel, University of Southwestern LouisianaClarissa on the Continent defines and explores two strategies of literary translation--creative vs. preservative and strong vs. weak--as they transform one of the most influential English novels. Few works have shaped a national literature as thoroughly as the Poem of the Cid has shaped the Spanish literary tradition. Tracing the life of the eleventh-century military commander Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, called El Cid (from the Arabic Sayyidi, "My Lord"), this medieval epic describes a series of events surrounding his exile. The text of the poem survives in only one early-thirteenth-century manuscript copied by a single scribe, yet centuries later the figure of the Cid still was celebrated in the Spanish popular ballad tradition. Today almost every theme that characterizes Spanish literature-honor, justice, loyalty, treachery, and jealousy-derives from the Poem of the Cid.Restored by poet and medievalist George Economou, this elegant and spirited translation by Paul Blackburn is judged by many the finest English translation of a great medieval poem.Paul Blackburn was among the foremost American poets and translators of the twentieth century.George Economou is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Oklahoma.Luis Cortest is Professor of Modern Languages and Literature at the University of Oklahoma."After decades of circulating in photocopies, the legendary Blackburn Cid has finally arrived, livelier than ever, unmistakable, and impossible not to read aloud. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) has always used translation memories, which require the translator to have a corpus of previous translations that the CAT software can use to generate bilingual lexicons. This can be problematic when the translator does not have such a corpus, for instance, when the text belongs to an emerging field. To solve this issue, CAT research has looked into the leveraging of comparable corpora, i.e. a set of texts, in two or more languages, which deal with the same topic but are not translations of one another. This work had two primary objectives. The first is to assess the input of lexicons extracted from comparable corpora in the context of a specialized human translation task. The second objective is to identify bilingual-lexicon-extraction methods which best match the translators’ needs, determining the current limits of these techniques and suggesting improvements. The author focuses, in particular, on the identification of fertile translations, the management of multiple morphological structures, and the ranking of candidate translations. The experiments are carried out on two language pairs (English–French and English–German) and on specialized texts dealing with breast cancer. This research puts significant emphasis on applicability – methodological choices are guided by the needs of the final users. This book is organized in two parts: the first part presents the applicative and scientific context of the research, and the second part is given over to efforts to improve compositional translation. The research work presented in this book received the PhD Thesis award 2014 from the French association for natural language processing (ATALA).

Jean Baptiste Racine, Geoffrey Alan Argent The Complete Plays of Jean Racine. Volume 1: The Fratricides

3627 руб.
This is the first volume of a planned translation into English of all twelve of Jean Racine's plays-a project undertaken only three times in the three hundred years since Racine's death. For this new translation, Geoffrey Alan Argent has taken a fresh approach: he has rendered these plays in rhymed "heroic" couplets. While Argent's translation is faithful to Racine's text and tone, his overriding intent has been to translate a work of French literature into a work of English literature, substituting for Racine's rhymed alexandrines (hexameters) the English mode of rhymed iambic pentameters, a verse form particularly well suited to the highly charged urgency of Racine's drama and the coiled strength of his verse. Complementing the translations are the illuminating Discussions and the extensive Notes and Commentaries Argent has furnished for each play. The Discussions are not offered as definitive interpretations of these plays, but are intended to stimulate readers to form their own views and to explore further the inexhaustibly rich world of Racine's plays. Included in the Notes and Commentary section of this translation are passages that Racine deleted after the first edition and have never before appeared in English. The full title of Racine's first tragedy is La Thébaïde ou les Frères ennemis (The Saga of Thebes, or The Enemy Brothers). But Racine was far less concerned with recounting the struggle for Thebes than in examining those i...

This is the third volume of a projected translation into English of all twelve of Jean Racine's plays-only the third time such a project has been undertaken. For this new translation, Geoffrey Alan Argent has rendered these plays in the verse form that Racine might well have used had he been English: namely, the "heroic" couplet. Argent has exploited the couplet's compressed power and flexibility to produce a work of English literature, a verse drama as gripping in English as Racine's is in French. Complementing the translation are the illuminating Discussion, intended as much to provoke discussion as to provide it, and the extensive Notes and Commentary, which offer their own fresh and thought-provoking insights. In Iphigenia, his ninth play, Racine returns to Greek myth for the first time since Andromache. To Euripides' version of the tale he adds a love interest between Iphigenia and Achilles. And dissatisfied with the earlier resolutions of the Iphigenia myth (her actual death or her eleventh-hour rescue by a dea ex machina), Racine creates a wholly original character, Eriphyle, who, in addition to providing an intriguing new denouement, serves the dual dramatic purpose of triangulating the love interest and galvanizing the wholesome "family values" of this play by a jolt of supercharged passion.

The first Russian translation of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" appeared in Moscow in 1879, fourteen years after the publication of original. It bore the title "Sonja in a Kingdom of Wonder" and was printed by Mamontov's Press. The text was printed in old Russian orthography (that is, using the old letters “і” and “ѣ”, and “ъ” at the ends of words, etc.) which was supplanted by the spelling reform of 1918. No name of the author, illustrator, or translator appeared on the title page. There is strong new evidence that the translator was Ekaterina Boratynskaya (née Timiryazeva), who later became an accomplished translator of children’s literature from English, a friend of Lev Tolstoy, and the first teacher of Boris Pasternak. According to Nina Demurova, “There are now many Russian translations of Alice, but Sonia is the first, and the only one done within Carroll’s lifetime, presumably with his knowledge, and thereby must be accorded a place of honour in the canon.” This is the first printing of Sonia in modern Russian orthography, with an extensive commentary in English.

This is a groundbreaking book in Catholic/Orthodox liturgy offers a new edition of the Liturgy of St. Gregory the Theologian based on the manuscripts of the Greek version of the text: Parisinus Graecus 325, the Kacmarcik Codex and the Wadi n’Natrun fragments. The edition, which is one of the only editions to include sections outside the Anaphoral prayers, builds on and supplements the work that prior scholars have done on the Greek text, such as Gerhards, who edited the Anaphora of the liturgy, and Macomber, who worked with the text in the Kacmarcik Codex. In addition to the edition, this book offers a translation of the text, as well as a commentary. The commentary looks at literary elements, such as intertextuality, philosophical and theological elements and the programmatic use of language. The commentary also attempts to clear up some of the fundamental questions about this text. While many of these questions have been discussed before in the secondary literature dealing with this liturgy, or liturgies generally, often the discussion was limited only in a context that dealt with a partial picture of the text. One of these fundamental questions, among many, concerns the placement of the text in time. The Greek manuscripts are clustered relatively late, in the fourteenth century. Despite this, the liturgy does not seem to be a composition of the Middle Ages, the Coptic versions of the text, for example, date from much earlier, the sixth century or so. Is the Greek text, the...

Studies of teacher beliefs about language learning, as compared to student beliefs, are relatively less common, especially concerning English language learning in Asian countries. The educational reform movement in Taiwan encourages learning English for communicative purposes and values individual interests. However, many current in-service English teachers and parents learned English via grammar translation method and testing, which focuses on the correction of language forms. As a result, these English teachers and parents may or may not share similar views about the changing trends in English learning. A survey and an interview protocol were served as data collection instruments. Teacher beliefs toward English learning in Taiwan were fully revealed in this book. The book provides the mutual understandings between eastern and western perspectives in terms of language education.
