Dorottya Rédai Gender in Education. A Democratic Transition. - A Comparative Analysis of Gender Issues in the Democratic Reform Process in Slovenian and Hungarian Education

The 1990s brought democratic transition to the countries of Central Eastern Europe - a still ongoing process, with specific social, economic and political challenges to be met in each country, including the reform of education. This book explores the educational reform process in Slovenia and Hungary from a gender perspective. A theoretical discussion of the relevance of gender in education is followed by a comparative analysis of the national curriculum reform and gender issues therein, the presence of gender in educational discourse, and the implications of the reforms for textbooks and teacher training in the two countries. The study is concluded by an assessment of the relative success of the reforms. Completed in 2003, the study covers an under-researched area, raises further questions and points towards potential research directions for scholars interested in gender and education in the CEE region. Recommendations are offered about elements of the Slovenian reform that could be adapted in Hungary to improve the curriculum and provide a context for discourse on gender in educational policies and practice, therefore the book is also of interest for educational decision-makers.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

This dissertation deals with the question of the EU's external influence on transforming societies. Is the external influence coherent with internal claims? Trade is the EU's most important external policy area. The EU is an economic giant based on the largest single market in the world. Thus the EU has power in and through trade. The EU makes increasingly the adaptation of normative standards acondition to access its market. Does the EU integrate also standards on gender equality? And does the EU transform gender regimes globally through trade? What impacts does the EU have on gender regimes? This dissertation examines gender impacts in the Sustainability Impact Assessments that show possible impacts of trade agreements between the EU and its partners. The analysis shows that gender is secondary to economic growth and not directed towards gender equality. As aconsequence the EU does not use its power through trade and the coherence of internal and external efforts is questionable.

Jennifer Douglas Like a Natural Woman Constructing Gender from Performance to Performativity

In this work, I promote a dialogue between Drama and Performance Studies concerning the performance of gender in everyday life and on the stage. While Judith Butler and others have argued that the performativity of gender must be examined outside of theatre, I argue that theatre can provide us with a unique lens through which to examine aspects of gender that can be overlooked in everyday life. The plays and performance art I have chosen highlight different modes of performing gender through representations of the female body, which introduce the tension between the discursively produced body and the lived, phenomenological body onstage. By exploring this tension, I argue that the performativity of gender onstage arises from a combination of words, the presentation of tangible bodies, and the audience's response to the stage action. I bring together iconic playwright Samuel Beckett with Cuban-American performance artist Ana Mendieta and Irish playwright Marina Carr in order to represent different modes of performance. This study should prove useful for scholars in theatre, performance studies, and gender studies, who are interested in examining gender in a theatrical context.

Gender and Schooling in the Early Years (PB)

In this volume, gender and schooling in the early years addresses a broad range of issues including, but not limited, to gender equity in education. We explore, for example, the complex world of play in Fromberg's chapter and are reminded that for young children, play involvesissues of power and hierarchy in ways that parallel the role of gender in society. Miletta's study of preschool children in northern Italy, atReggio Emilia, reveals a story of classroom interactions where gender differences are not part of the equation for the youngsters. Her chapterbegs the question, "How does this environment empower all children, regardless of gender?" Two chapters provide a lens to the Montessorisetting for young children. Wilgus studies the gendered patterns of young women teaching at a Montessori school, while Irby, Rodriguez, and Lara-Alecio explore the intersections of culture and gender at a bilingual Montessori public school. Further examining the preschoolyears, Plaster and Schiller address the current brain research and examine the ways in which the adults that staff early child care programs, and the environments that they offer, play an important role in the development of our children.

Since the dawn of history, folktales have been serving to pass didactic lessons to the audience to enlighten their mindset. However, this literary genre has started recently to lose its superficial role due to its inherent discursiveness in representing gender identity. Thus, the book in hand aims at scrutinizing the representation of gender dual dichotomy in folktales; this book is also written to provide the reader with a theoretical as well as an analytical insight on issues that concern gender as a social construct. To this very reason, a case study has been selected for exploring closely the various metaphorical aspects through which gender clash is depicted. For the critical study of this problematic theme, recourse to the feminist-based oppositional approach is suggested in this vein to fit into the requirements of our methodological analysis.

In contemporary society advertising is everywhere. Advertisement is always with us, no matter where we are. Although we are aware of the constant bombarding by advertisement everywhere we go, we hardly recognize the influence that it has on us. Thereby, advertising has a great influence on us as individuals and on society as a whole. Through the media, we make sense of our cultural identities, gender and sexuality. The central goal of this book is to examine the development of presentations of gender stereotypes in print advertisements over a time period of 40 years via content analysis of a sample of magazine advertisements. The key questions are: How do U.S. print advertisements construct gender stereotypes? How did these stereotypes develop and do they have an influence on the consumer and the U.S. culture? Content analysis has been proven in decades of research on gender stereotyping as it relates to mass media and because this is an appropriate method to not only focus on images, but also on verbal messages. Magazines present an especially enduring, popular medium, thus this study focuses on gender stereotypes in print advertisements of magazines. More specifically, it focuses on the magazines Cosmopolitan and Esquire due to the varying target audiences, and because they might be a potential indicator of U.S. magazine advertising in general. To further limit the object of investigation, this study concentrates on beauty product advertisements. From the text: - Gender studi...

Do new forms of economic and cultural globalization open spaces for women's empowerment and feminist politics? The rapid social transformationsexperienced by the people of the Czech Republic in the wake of the collapse of communism in 1989 afford political scientist Jacqui True with an opportunity to answer these questions by examining political and gendered identities in flux. She argues that the privatization of a formerly state economy and the adoption of consumer-oriented market practices were shaped by ideas and attitudes about gender roles. Though finely tuned to the particular, local traditions that have defined the boundaries of globalization for Czech men and women, also offers a provocative general thesis about the inextricable linkages between political and economic changes and gender identities.

At the first glance it can surely appear discriminating to differentiate customers by gender, but the genuine intention of gender marketing is to accept and appreciate both genders as they are and develop products according to their gender specific needs. Therefore, it is important to understand that by talking about gender it does not imply talking about fixed roles of males and females in society. Those roles have changed significantly over the last decades and are expected to continue changing over upcoming years. It rather means taking gender specific needs, wishes and characteristics in consideration while developing products and company strategies in order to achieve long-term success and customer loyalty. But why is this even relevant? Women have been buying products anyway, right? Certainly, women have been buying products without a gender specific approach already. However, the truth is that our markets are saturated and the flood of information customers are confronted with everyday exceeds their cognitive ability. This itself shows the importance of tailoring products as well as communication strategies to customers' needs. Additionally, ...

The idea that respect for cultural diversity conflicts with gender equality is now a staple of both public and academic debate. Yet discussion of these tensions is marred by exaggerated talk of cultural difference, leading to ethnic reductionism, cultural stereotyping, and a hierarchy of traditional and modern. In this volume, Anne Phillips firmly rejects the notion that ‘culture’ might justify the oppression of women, but also queries the stereotypical binaries that have represented people from ethnocultural minorities as peculiarly resistant to gender equality. The questions addressed include the relationship between universalism and cultural relativism, how to distinguish valid generalisation from either gender or cultural essentialism, and how to recognise women as agents rather than captives of culture. The discussions are illuminated by reference to legal cases and policy interventions, with a particular focus on forced marriage and cultural defence.

Wasihun S. Gutema Gender inequality in the 2014 Ebola Crisis and Human Security

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine how the 2014 Ebola crisis affected women in West Africa from a human security perspective. The goal is to articulate how gender inequality has aggravated the spread of the Ebola virus diseases due to the unequal position held by women stemming from a patriarchal doctrine ingrained in Western African communities' cultures, governmental administrative incapability, and economic and social inequality. Gender inequality, which is deep-rooted in the culture of the Western African society, played a tremendous role in the spread of the disease resulting in more cases and deaths of the Ebola Virus diseases to the women population compared to male. It thus created a human security breach where women were exposed to insecurities. Gender inequality was the resultant effect from gender differences that paved the way for insecurities. Upon examination of the Ebola crisis in West Africa, it became clear that women were the most affected segments of the society in West Africa particularly in the three most hit countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Through showing the cruelty of cultural doctrine and gender inequality that have made the women population insecure, this research highlights the importance of gender and cultural equality along with better policy to protect wome...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Women Studies / Gender Studies, University of the Philippines (Philippine Military Academy), course: Master of Arts in Social and Development Studies, language: English, abstract: The main concern in this paper is to address the question, what approaches could provide us with a convincing linkage between gender and energy? This research attempts to explore, therefore, the linkages among gender, energy and development.Women/gender and women's empowerment serve as core impetus in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), however, gender fails to be viewed as a critical pathway in improving the performance and service delivery of energy sectors. It is in the same manner that energy is not widely viewed to be significant in addressing development issues such as women's education and employment, maternal health, child mortality rate, poverty, hunger, and even income. One reason could be the failure to perceive gender and energy as fuelling each other in a single development research and/or practice.

The primary objective of the study is investigating the effectiveness of Debub FM gender programmes in promoting gender equality. To this end, the research employed questionnaire and interview in both languages Amharic and English for the target group as instrument of gathering necessary data. Questionnaire was distributed for 30 selected listeners; 20 are males and the other 10 are female. And the interview for 3 selected persons. The two are females from the selected professionals and the one is male from selected listener. Finally, based on the finding of this research, it can be concluded that Debub FM gender programmes are playing a great part in shaping the listeners' attitude towards gender equality positively. This can be measured by the attention and priority given to women's programme in Debub FM. The gender programme in Debub FM Fithih Lehulum and Yesetoch Raey play a great role in changing the negative stereotype of the people towards women and educate the society to banned traditional harmful practice like women circumcision and abduction.

Explains how GIS enhances the development of chemical fate and transport models Over the past decade, researchers have discovered that geographic information systems (GIS) are not only excellent tools for managing and displaying maps, but also useful in the analysis of chemical fate and transport in the environment. Among its many benefits, GIS facilitates the identification of critical factors that drive chemical fate and transport. Moreover, GIS makes it easier to communicate and explain key model assumptions. Based on the author's firsthand experience in environmental assessment, GIS Based Chemical Fate Modeling explores both GIS and chemical fate and transport modeling fundamentals, creating an interface between the two domains. It then explains how GIS analytical functions enable scientists to develop simple, yet comprehensive spatially explicit chemical fate and transport models that support real-world applications. In addition, the book features: Practical examples of GIS based model calculations that serve as templates for the development of new applications Exercises enabling readers to create their own GIS based models Accompanying website featuring downloadable datasets used in the book's examples and exercises References to the literature, websites, data repositories, and online reports to facilitate further research Coverage of important topics such as spatial decision support systems and multi-criteria analysis as well as ecological and human health risk assessment in a spatial context GIS Based Chemical Fate Modeling makes a unique contribution to the environmental sciences by explaining how GIS analytical functions enhance the development and interpretation of chemical fate and transport models. Environmental scientists should turn to this book to gain a deeper understanding of the role of GIS in describing what happens to chemicals when they are released into the environment.

Commonly it is assumed that women tend to be more risk-averse while men are more risky and overconfident in regard to financial topics. These assumptions of gender-differences are investigated in this research. Further this paper explores the gender-based differences in financial literacy as well as the gender disparities in obtaining information. A survey was conducted to gain information about the financial behaviour of undergraduate students from the Trier University of Applied Sciences. Results show that, in this sample, gender does not influence risk-taking behaviour, financial knowledge, or the way of obtaining information but only affects the degree of confidence.

Ephraim Das Janssen Phenomenal Gender. What Transgender Experience Discloses

Just what is gender, and what can be expected of it when dealing with identity, justice, and equality? Ephraim Das Janssen uses a phenomenological approach to challenge and dismantle the way gender is currently understood. Janssen questions ideas that have formerly been taken for granted, as individuals did during the Civil Rights movement, the women's movement, and the LGBT rights movement. In so doing he recasts the moral debate about gender and grounds his analysis in observable aspects such as clothing and social roles and how these can imply transgression and questioning. Janssen shakes the very core of gender through a deep engagement with Being and the structures that confine our contemporary notions.

Tegegn B. Geribo Gender and Education

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Human and Social Studies), language: English, abstract: AbstractEducation is universally recognized as playing role in sustainable social and economic development. Regardless of the ideology underlying approaches to development, education improves the quality of life; it improves health, expands access to paid employment, increases productivity in market and non-market work, and facilitates social and political participation. Because of these facts, the education of girls and women is therefore an important investment, despite the precarious economic contexts within which many countries have to provide for education. Gender refers to historical and sociological relationships between women and men. If development is seen as an attempt to raise the quality of life all citizen, gender in development works toward ensuring that the special needs of women with respect to those of men, are met in this process. However, significant gender inequalities exist in education sector. These inequalities are found not only in indicators which can be rapidly obtained from statistical sources such as literacy, enrolment, achievement and levels of schooling attained, but also in several other aspects of education which are of concern in the pursuit of gender equality and equity such as management personnel in decision-making roles, cur...

A Volume in International Perspectives on Mathematics Education- Cognition, Equity & SocietySeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of Montana and Lyn English, QueenslandUniversity of TechnologyWhy a book on gender issues in mathematics in the 21st century? Several factors have influenced theundertaking of this project by the editors. First, an international volume focusing on gender and mathematicshas not appeared since publication of papers emerging from the 1996 International Congress onMathematical Education (Keitel, 1998). Surely it was time for an updated look at this critical area ofmathematics education. Second, we have had lively discussion and working groups on gender issues atconferences of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education [PME] for the past fouryears, sessions at which stimulating and ground-breaking research has been discussed by participants from many different countries. Some publicationseemed essential to share this new knowledge emerging from a wider variety of countries and from different cultural perspectives. Third, some westerncountries such as Australia and the USA have experienced in recent years a focus on the "boy problem," with an underlying assumption that issues offemales and mathematics have been solved and are no longer worthy of interest. Thus it seemed timely to look more closely at the issue of gender andmathematics internationally. When the idea for this volume first emerged, invitations w...

Mushidi Kambala Lisa Gender and Asylum Determination in South Africa

South Africa is the only African country with an asylum system where persecution on the grounds of gender is clearly recognised in the Refugee Act of 1998. However, it is unclear whether South African asylum determination officers are aware of that and to what extent this influences their decision-making. Similarly, it is unclear whether asylum seekers in South Africa know that there is a possibility of applying for refugee status on this basis. The study seeks to explore plausible explanations surrounding the issue. By using existing literature and semi-structural interviews with both asylum claimants and DHA officials, I found out that the lack of gender sensitivity from the DHA officials, lack of awareness and the difficulty to talk about their experiences from the side of asylum claimants are central to the problem.

Susan K. Besse Restructuring Patriarchy. The Modernization of Gender Inequality in Brazil, 1914-1940

Susan K. Besse broadens our understanding of the political by establishing the relevance of gender for the construction of state hegemony in Brazil after World War I. Restructuring Patriarchy demonstrates that the consolidation and legitimization of power by President Getulio Vargas's Estado Novo depended to a large extent on the reorganization of social relations in the private sphere. New expectations and patterns of behavior for women emerged in postwar Brazil from heated debates between men and women, housewives and career women, feminists and antifeminists, reformist professionals and conservative clerics, and industrialists and bureaucrats. But as urban middle- and upper-class women challenged patriarchal authority at home and assumed new roles in public, prominent intellectuals, professionals, and politicians defined and imposed new 'hygienic,' rational, and scientific gender norms. Thus, modernization of the gender system within Brazil's rising urban-industrial society accommodated new necessities and opportunities for women without fundamentally changing the gender inequality that underlay the larger structure of social inequality in Brazil.

The analysis is based on the political manifestos of the winning coalition for the 2001, 2006 and 2008 general elections, and the speeches of the Ministers for Equal Opportunities concerning the ministerial program guidelines made at the beginning of each legislature. The purpose of the work is: 1) to explore how gender relations, feminine identities and their interests are constructed through representative claims, 2) to examine what policy pledges representatives commit to when they seek to substantively act for women and 3) to investigate the link between CRG and SRW by analysing the congruency between the pledges made for women and the legislation proposed by the Italian women's policy agency, the Ministry for the Equal Opportunities.Traditional research on women's political representation focuses on the substantive (SRW) and descriptive representation of women and on the link between the two. However, the relationship has proved to be elusive and evidence is inconclusive. Recently a new conceptualisation of political representation, intended as a creative and performative act, has been ad...
