This research studies Yemeni foreign policy towards the Horn of Africa. It mainly focuses on the importance the Horn of Africa represents to Yemen National Security. The research argues that although the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Horn of Africa are the main regional factors shaping Yemeni foreign policy, the Horn of Africa took priority over the Gulf Cooperation Council during the period 2000 to 2010. This research tries to answer some questions such as why the Horn of Africa was the most important factor shaping the Yemeni foreign policy and what were the policies and actions Yemeni foreign policy adopted to deal with the threats coming from that strategic area.

Today, the Horn of Africa is a hot spot of international terrorism. Thanks to its geographical proximity and strong historical tie with the Middle East where many militant Islamic extremists originate, it has become a breeding ground and haven of international terrorist groups. Although there are some complementary factors; religion particularly Islam manifested in the form of Wahhabism ideology is the major cause of international terrorism in the sub-region. Against this backdrop, IGAD started initiatives to counter-terrorism. As a regional development organization, it has extended its mandate to take peace and security in the Sub-region seriously since 1996. Likewise, since the September 11 tragedy on America, member states have became conscious about the security challenge posed by international terrorism and planned to take a joint action. Accordingly, IGAD focused on looking for ways and means to support the efforts of member states in fighting terrorism. However, though IGAD has gone a long way in countering international terrorism in the Horn of Africa, its effort is far from success due to institutional, sub-regional and external involvement challenges.

The subject of food security or insecurity is a complex development issue in most third world countries. In a given locality, the pervasiveness of food insecurity could be a measure of local level of governance, natural disaster, conflict, war, power imbalance, highly skewed economic distribution among citizens, lack of and competition for natural resources, over population and/or other factors.Currently, over 800 million people or 13 per cent of the world’s population are chronically undernourished in a world that can produce sufficient food for everyone and day in and day out, they wake up hungry and go to bed hungry. In Sub-Saharan Africa only,it is projected that by 2020, the number of food-insecure people will exceed 500 million, out of a total population of roughly 1 billion. Within this sub-continent,the Horn of Africa is one of the most volatile regions which might mainly be triggered by food insecurity. The driving forces of food insecurity in this area are not easy to analyse and at times could be enigmatic.Using the case of Djibouti & Somalia, this book explicates how a number of factors are involving in bringing down a country to a state of unparalleled food insecurity & termoil.

It sets out to point to the causes and the origin of the problems that pastoral peoples in those areas commonly face. From the discussion of the available literature and the outcomes of most of the development interventions made in the region, the book shows that the usual myths and misconceptions of old orthodoxies and problems still prevail and that these form basis of misunderstandings and ignorance about the pastoral production system. The latter also form the building blocks to erroneous concepts such as ‘economic irrationality’, ‘mismanagement of common properties and environments by the pastoral herders. Examples of some development interventions and their impacts were discussed. The book also discusses some alternative approaches and options for the development of pastoral people, resources and environments and concludes that the use of the indigenous technical knowledge and skills of the local people is crucial if real improvement of the living conditions of pastoralists, their local environments and livestock and success of any development project or effort.

Nigeria and South Africa provide the socioeconomic and political contrasts in the African condition. Some of these contrasts can be demonstrated in the following dialectics: Nigeria is the Africa of human resources, South Africa is a land of mineral resources; Nigeria is repellant to European settlement; South Africa is a magnet for such settlement; Nigeria is a mono-racial society, South Africa is a multiracial society; Nigeria is grappling with the politics of religion, South Africa's is pre-occupied with the politics of secularism; Nigeria is Africa's largest exporter of oil, South Africa is Africa's largest consumer of oil; Nigeria is a paradigm of indigenization, South Africa is a paragon of Westernization. Building on these contrasts, Professor Ali Mazrui, master of the dialectical approach to socio-political analysis, demonstrates how the two most influential countries between the Niger and the Cape of Good Hope are alternative faces of Africa. _______________________Professor Ali Mazrui needs no introduction to any student of African politics. The book, made up of three parts, covers a wide spectrum of political economy issues on post-apartheid South Africa. Although the text is mainly descriptive, to explain various areas of the political economy of post-apartheid South Africa, the first and the last parts provide illuminating insights on the kind of society that is emerging during the twenty-one years of democracy in the country. The book discusses important aspects of the political history of apartheid South Africa and the evolution of post-apartheid society, including an important recap of the history of southern Africa before colonialism. The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Through the lens of the notion of democratic developmental state and taking apartheid colonialism as a point of departure, the ...

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: The relationship between South Africa and MAP emanates from South Africa's Foreign policy which advanced: Promotion of justice, democracy and human rights as well as prosperity and security achieved through economic development. South Africa's philosophy of African Renaissance directed at rejuvenating and renewing Africa transforms the continent into an arena of peace, security and stability, was blended into MAP. Economically, South Africa's adoption of neo-liberal policies in MAP were encouraged by South Africa's incorporation of neo-liberal visions in MAP and have been influenced by the country's adoption of Growth, Equity and Redistribution (GEAR) in 1996. GEAR became the macro-economic framework for all policies of the government whose aim was to make South Africa the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as allowing the country to occupy a comfortable position in the rapidly globalising world. However, MAP has been grappling with numerous challenges and its dependency underpinning. These challenges include structural, endogenous and exogenous factors which continue to constrain Africa's endeavours. This paper focuses on the relationship between South African foreign policy and MAP. The Crises of Postcoloniality in Africa is an assemblage of transdisciplinary essays that offer a spirited reflection on the debate and phenomenon of postcoloniality in Africa, including the changing patterns and ramifications of problems, challenges and opportunities associated with it. A key conceptual rhythm that runs through the various chapters of the book is that, far from being demised, postcoloniality is still firmly embedded in Africa, manifesting itself in both blatant and insidious forms. Among the important themes covered in the book include the concepts of postcolonialism, postcoloniality, and neocolonialism; Africa’s precolonial formations and the impact of colonialism; the enduring patterns of colonial legacies in Africa; the persistent contradictions between African indigenous institutions and western versions of modernity; the unravelling of the postcolonial state and issues of armed conflict, conflict intervention and peacebuilding; postcolonial imperialism in Africa and the US-led global war on terror, the historical and postcolonial contexts of gender relations in Africa, as well as pan-Africanism and regionalist approaches to redressing the crises of postcoloniality.

Hemingway's well-known interest in - and fascination with - big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip. It is an examination of the lure of the hunt and an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape and of the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.

The 21st century brings up a great chance for the African continent, an opportunity that shouldn't be missed. There are three great advantages for Africa: the rising demand for natural resources, the need of workforce, but also the quest for new markets, and Africa is a market of over one billion people. Africa can provide all of these and many more. The articles are focused on the role of the United States, China, Russia, India and Brazil in the development process of Africa, from economic and political ties to big investment and loans, without neglecting society and cultural aspects, referring to concepts like "power", "soft power" and "globalization". We tried to answer two questions "Is Africa the next big thing?" and "What global power will have greater influence in Africa?". We overviewed as well the role of the Organization of African Unity, today the African Union, and what future challenges it faces. Last but not least, you will find some short articles, previously written on my blog, on politics and sports, elections, failed states and the power of internet in Africa.

Africa in Global Power Play: Debates, Challenges and Potential Reforms is a compilation of insightful and analytical articles that were published in different issues of the journal, African Renaissance, between 2004 and 2006. Most of the articles are from established academics, researchers, development practitioners and policymakers as well as stakeholders in Africa. Though the perspectives are as varied as the contributions, the underlining themes are the current scramble for Africa and the various development trajectories vis-à-vis those of other regions of the world. Contributors also address the continuous interactions and inevitable contradictions between Africa and the rest of the world. The various contributions seek answers to a number of fundamental questions around Africa's position in the global political economy, focusing on such areas as international economic relations, political and economic reforms, democratic transitions and consolidations, human rights and security. Though contributions show that Africa faces enormous challenges in the global political economy, they also point to the current dynamism and optimism in many parts of the continent. ______________________________________________Bhekinkosi Moyo is currently based in Dakar, Senegal, where he conducts and manages research for TrustAfrica: a grant-making foundation focusing on regional integration, peace and security as well as citizenship and identity. There are milliards of off beam assumptions that Africa will always remain immobile in development of whatever type. This view has mainly been propounded by Western thinkers in order to make Africans internalise and reinforce this supposed dependency. Africa needs to embark on paradigm shift; and tweak and turn things around. Africa has what it take to do so quickly, especially now that new economic powers such as China and India are evolving as counterweight to the West. Shall Africa use these new economic forces to its advantage based on fair and win-win cooperation? To do so, Africa must make sure that it does not slink back into business as usual vis-a-vis beggarliness, dependence, frailty, gullibility, made-up backwardness, monkey business, and pipedreams, not to mention the nasty and narcissistic behaviours of its venal and navel-gazing rulers. Verily, Africa needs, inter alia, to use its God-given gifts, namely, immense resources, young population, abundance of vast and unexploited amounts of land. Equally, Africa must, without equivocation, invest copiously and earnestly in its people, the youth in the main. Most of all, Africa needs to shy away from all colonial carryovers and encumbrances. This volume shows many ways through and by which Africa can reverse the current imbroglio-cum-no-go it faces for the better; and thereby actualise the dream of being truly independent and prosperous.

Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the "trial communities" produced by this scientific work. Malaria is a serious health and economic problem in Africa, afflicting more than half of the continent's population. Although HICV/AIDS, TB and nutritional deficiencies pose major development problems on the continent, the challenges presented by malaria are of a different kind, because the disease is widespread, persistent and grossly underestimated by the general population. The importance of malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in the development agenda, is now recognised in Goal 6 of the Millennium Goals. This book provides the evidence required to design and implement malaria control strategies in Africa. The chapters analyse the nexus between poverty and malaria with a focus on policies that can be implemented at various levels of society to fight the disease. Malaria and Poverty in Africa is the outcome of a research sponsored by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). The idea to write this book was born during our visit to a mushroom farm house at Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi, Lilongwe, Malawi, and also during our discussions with several beginners of mushroom farming activities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and other countries in Africa. The visits were a part of a fact finding mission for a UNDP/UNOPS-funded Regional Project for Africa on Promoting Sustainable Development in Africa from Africa's biodiversity, which was based at the University of Namibia, and whose Founding Director was the second author of the book, who was then also a Founding UNESCO/UNU Chair for Africa, based in Namibia. The First Edition of the book was a product of a document compiled by Prof. S. T. Chang and Prof. K. E. The objective of the First Edition of the book was to enable beginners of mushroom farming activities in Africa to have some basic understanding of mushroom biology and mushroom farming technologies. The current book updates the technologies involved, and shows the great advances recently made in mushroom science.

It has been said before that Africa is one of the richest continents in the world but the poorest and colonialism was blamed for Africa's problems before the continent was liberated. Although some leaders still blame colonialism for the poverty that is ravaging the continent today, it cannot be denied that poor governance, corruption, greed among many other ills are causing Africa's current problems. The essays in this collection The Gods Sleep Through It All discusses Africa's leadership problems and how most countries still rely on former colonisers for help despite boasting of untold natural wealth. The essays discuss the corruption of political parties and politics in Africa and question why African countries readily open their arms to countries like China but close borders to people from other African countries.

It has been long overdue to address the principal problems that Africa continues to have. How to bring real African solutions to these problems remains unresolved. Palaeontologists have discovered that Africa is the origin of humanity. Africa has also experienced the commodification of its humanity through slavery, colonialism and apartheid. The African continent has been influenced by a mélange of races, cultures, religions, ethnic nationalities making the project of how the differences can be managed to forestall conflict and promote the unity of the current 54 states to turn the cacophony of noises into a single voice that can protect Africa a difficult challenge. This book on Regenerating Africa: Bringing African Solutions to African Problems addresses why Africans must come together and try to address their own problems. They must look back to the spiritual, struggle and knowledge heritage to re-imagine and innovate a new Africa with leadership, governance, systems and institutions that can address the security and well-being, the employment, social inclusion, poverty eradication and the equality of the people. In fact the key problem to find a solution is how to Africanise those that originated from Africa and those that became settlers with different racial, cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic variations. How to manage inter-African relations? How the settlers from the colonial legacy, the apartheid legacy, the Arabs in Africa and the varied tribes within Africa...

Urbanization in Africa also means rapid technological change. At the turn of the 21st century, mobile telephony appeared in urban Africa. Ten years later, it covered large parts of rural Africa and – thanks to the smartphone – became the main access to the internet. This development is part of technological transformations in digitalization that are supposed to bridge the urban and the rural and will make their borders blurred. They do so through the creation of economic opportunities, the flow of information and by influencing people’s definition of self, belonging and citizenship. These changes are met with huge optimism and the message of Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) for Africa has been one of glory and revolution. Practice, however, reveals other sides. Increasingly, academic publications show that we are facing a new form of digital divide in which Africa is (again) at the margins. These technological transformations influence the relation between urban and rural Africa, and between ‘Africa’ and the World, and hence the field of African Studies both in its objects as well as in its forms of knowledge production and in the formulation of the problems we should study. In this lecture, Mirjam de Bruijn reflects on two decades of research experience in West and Central Africa and discusses how, for her, the field has changed. The author was forced to decolonize her thinking even further, and to enter into co-creation in knowledge product...

The first English translation of part one of Li Anshan's seminal work Feizhou Huaqiao Huaren Shi, A History of Overseas Chinese in Africa to 1911 explores early Chinese knowledge of and contacts with Africa through Chinese literature on Africa and current archeological evidence, suggesting Sino-African trade existed as early as the seventh century. Li provides readers with an uncomplicated history of Chinese in Africa, examining their story from multiple perspectives, using approaches and sources found in economic history, social history, international relations, and migration in world history. While Li maintains the first group of Chinese were prisoners brought by the Dutch from Southeast Asia in the seventeenth century, the vast majority of early Chinese in Africa were "free immigrants" and contract labors that established key communities and organizations. It is these early Chinese which laid foundations for and provide important context in interpreting the recent flow of Chinese migrants and capital into various parts of Africa. The book should be of value to African and world historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and students of African and Asian studies.

Beyond the Primary Commodity Trap offers an alternative paradigm for analysing African development from the current "aid and aids" narrative. Taking as its point of departure Africa's failure to extricate itself from over dependence on raw materials and its seeming inability to industrialise, it offers an analysis of the political forces that have shaped and continue to shape Africa's political economy. The book focuses particularly on the endemic poverty in the continent and how it interfaces with politics. Written with the general reader in mind, the book also examines some of the internal dynamics in Africa and how these combine with the continent's history and some other extraneous factors to explain the current conditions of economic poverty and the poverty of leadership in many parts of the continent.

With this in mind, OSSREA's invitation to conduct a study on international migration in Africa had the following objectives: To analyze the nature and type of South-South migration, focusing on issues, such as brain gain and/or brain drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the right of African migrants and gender dimensions of migration; To investigate the dynamics of migration from Eastern and Southern Africa to the Arab Gulf States as well as to developed countries, focusing on the skills of migrants, brain gain and/or drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the rights of African migrants and gender dimension of migrants; and to assess the successes, impediments and challenges of African international migrants from Eastern and Southern Africa and to formulate policy recommendations to maximize the gains and minimize the costs associated with international migration in Africa.

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History - World History - Modern History, grade: 1c, University of Stirling, course: Apartheid and Resistance in South Africa, 1948 - 1994, language: English, abstract: Apartheid and Resistance in South Africa, 1948 - 1994Any account of the polarisation of African society into distinct white and black polarities, on the right and left wings of the political spectrum respectively, between 1960 and 1964 must be considered in the light of pre-existing relationships between whites and non-whites in South Africa, which manifested themselves in microcosm with events at Sharpeville on 21 March 1960. Critical to the discussion will be the role played by the National Party government, particularly relating to the creation of the Republic of South Africa in 1961, withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Nations in the same year, the 1961 General Election and the government's racial policy. The function of the United Party, as the party of Official opposition, will also be scrutinised, together with the role of the Liberal Party and the Progressive Party. Analysis of the ideologies of the African resistance movements, including the African National Congress, with Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the Pan-Africanist Congress, with Poqo, will further reveal reasons for the adoption of extreme opposing attitudes. Moreover, these diametric attitudes were subjected to influence from, and response to, international events both within Africa and globally.

Karim F Hirji The Enduring Relevance of Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa

789 руб.
Soon after its publication in 1972, Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (HEUA) gained global popularity among progressive students, scholars and activists, and people concerned with African affairs. His innovative application of the method of political economy was a prime contributor to shifting the paradigm for rendition of the continent’s past as well as for visualizing its possible trajectory. Because it stridently took the traditional historians of Africa and the prevailing neo-colonial order to task, it was also vociferously criticized by the defenders of the status quo. In these neoliberal times, its visibility has waned. Mainstream scholars and pundits from and outside of Africa proclaim that it is no longer a relevant work for Africa. In The Enduring Relevance of Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Karim F Hirji makes a systematic case that, on the contrary, Rodney’s seminal work retains its singular value for understanding where Africa has come from, where it is going, and charting a path towards genuine development for the people of Africa. Hirji considers Rodney in his unitary persona as a historian, theoretician and activist. He begins by outlining the publication history and contents of HEUA, and noting the comments it has drawn from varied quarters. This is followed by a depiction of the global context within which it saw the light of the day and the flowering of progressive thought and vision in those vibrant times. The retrogress...

Contemporary Issues in Mental Health Care in sub-Saharan Africa

4452 руб.
Seventy percent of the global burden of mental disorders is located in low and middle income countries (LMIC),including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, in Africa, only 0.62% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health compared to a global median of 2.8% and 5% in Europe. The government is the source of funding in 62%of patients with severe mental disorder in the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa Region, the lowest of all the WHO regions, and lower compared to a global median of 79%. This is compounded by poor resources, with mental health outpatient facilities in WHO Africa Region being less that 10% of the global median. To address these problems, the WHO launched its Mental Health Action Gap Programme (mhGAP) in 2008, to scale-up mental health services in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The book is directed to all policy makers in sub-Saharan Africa to aid decision making about the urgent need for sustainable and relevant mental health care strategies, and the important areas that need priority. The book should be helpful to local and international researchers in formulating research questions relevant to the African continent and it will be of interest to medical practitioners and students in the region as adjunct to standard text books.

A unique assessment of the Great War in sub-Saharan Africa in all its theatresThe great conflict fought between 1914 and 1918 set Europe ablaze, but, as the definition of ‘world war’ implies, embraced battlefields where the colonial interests of the protagonist nations inevitably collided. How this occurred on the continent of Africa has always fascinated military history students of the period, not least because these campaigns unconfined by the stagnation of trench warfare, as was the case on the Western Front, were fought over exotic terrains by national, militia and native forces often commanded by able and imaginative officers on both sides. Much focus has been given to the campaigns in East Africa, which features in detail in this book, but also included is the campaign fought in the arid landscape of South-West Africa (now Namibia) and those which took place in Equatorial Togoland (Ghana Volta) and The Cameroons in West Africa. The ‘South African Rebellion’ is also described. The author of this book, John Buchan, a writer of great talent and economy of phrase, was primarily known for his superlative adventure fiction. However, he was commissioned to write a multi-volume history of the First World War which enabled him to reveal his talent as an historian and from which this single volume edition has been selectively edited. Buchan’s text, appearing in this form for the first time in this Leonaur edition, includes many excellent maps and has been further enhanced by pho...

Since the final collapse of Somalia’s repressive regime in 1991, Somalia has presented the world not only with the most profound case of state collapse witnessed in modern times but also with one of the most intriguing cases of political fragmentation, armed conflicts, lawlessness and statelessness. Inevitably the last 20 years of statelessness and chaos has left the Somali economy destitute and made Somalia to be ranked among the five poorest ‘countries’ in the world. Contributors to this volume examine efforts at reconstituting the failed Somali state and the role of the Somali Diaspora and civil society groups in the processes. They also analyse how the Somali Diaspora and civil society in Somalia engage and cooperate to further processes of state-reconstitution in Somalia as well as help the Somali Diaspora adjust in their host nations.

Civil conflicts in Africa range from few interstate wars to several intrastate conflicts characterized by secessionist movements, irredentism, coups and counter coups, genocide, wars of liberation to resource-based wars. The varied causes of conflicts in the continent's diverse and complex social formations are seen in ethnic terms and include struggles for economic/environmental resources, poor institutions of governance and issues of identity such as religion, language and racial differences. The core issue addressed in this volume is how to understand and explain the structural and analytical reasons for persistent civil conflicts in Africa. The core assumption is that most civil conflicts in Africa erupt largely because of the nature of state formation in the continent. Other significant variables that are explored as explanations for the persistent instances of civil conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa and the slow efforts at nation-building across the continent include issues of territoriality, climate change, ethnicity, ideological incongruities, institutional problems, the nature of postcolonial state, unreformed governance and economic structures, and corruption. This book also examines some sources of unresolved issues of territoriality and explains their connections to political violence and socio-political and cultural tensions across sub-Saharan Africa. It offers suggestions on how scholarly research and policies could help mediate if not mitigate future territor...

Africa's history is not the stuff of which fairytales are made of. Slavery, colonialism, andneocolonialism left a bitter legacy in Africa. Butit is also true that Africa was failed by herleadership. Today, the challenge for Africa'sleadership is to escape from the grips of the pastand create the conditions that will allow her peoplea life of dignity. And there has never been a betteropportunity to do so. These are the challenges ofmodern days. These are the defining challenges ofpolitical leadership. The battle for political andeconomic emancipation could only be won with a mindresolutely turned towards the future. Thus, a newcontract is needed between the people and theleadership in Africa. When African leaders met at Kananaski in June 2002and at Durban in July of the same year to create theAfrican Union, this is what they were signing: apledge to the people of Africa to promote soundeconomic management, democracy, peace, security anddevelopment within the framework of a united Africa. At the end of the day, this exciting road to unityand development promises to be not an easy one. Morethan anything else, it promises to be a test ofleadership.
