The common bean is an important food and cash crop in many regions of the world. In Africa alone, it provides food for more than 100 million people and is a critical source of income for rural households. Common bean yields, however, have dropped in the last ten years. This decline is the result of poor soil fertility and nutrient depletion as well as high incidences of insect pests, key among them being the bean stem maggot (BSM) and the black bean aphid (BBA). To address soil nutrient depletion and the accompanying declining agricultural productivity, integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) has been adapted as a framework for enhancing crop productivity through combining fertilizer use with other soil fertility management technologies, adapted to local conditions. The book evaluates the influence of soil fertility treatments on yield and yield components of the common bean. Additionally, to establish the potential links between soil fertility and crop protection, the effect of ISFM interventions on the incidence of the BSM and the BBA is also being assessed.

Land degradation and soil erosion are significant environmental problems affecting agricultural productivity and livelihood in Malawi. A number of soil fertility improvement technologies are being promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and non governmental organization, in order to improve agricultural productivity and food security. In spite of the growing awareness of low cost soil fertility technologies, the rate of adoption and continued use of the technologies remain limited. The thesis examines farmer's perception of the current level of soil fertility and factors effecting farmers use of different soil fertility improvement technologies, using example of farmers from Machinga and Zomba Districts, in Malawi. The results provide insights for designing appropriate strategies, policies and programmes aimed at promoting adoption of soil fertility improvement technologies.

Nutrient resources are rapidly depleting. Significant amounts of fossil energy are required for the production of synthetic fertilizers, whereas costs for energy and fertilizers are increasing.The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the impact of bio-amendments instead of synthetic fertilizers. It aims to i) identify the impact of the different scenarios on the soil fertility ii) the influence of bio-amendment substitutes on the soil quality and iii) the impact of the applied amendment on the plant nutrient contents. Eleven scenarios were designed from liquid manure, digestates and scrubber water.Their application resulted in no nitrate pollution according to the Flemish Manure decree in the top 90 cm of the soil. Also there was no negative impact on the soil quality and soil fertility though soil degradation needs to be monitored in the long term. Moreover, the nutrient status of the experimental field was already quite high to begin with. However, the lack of a reference treatment precluded the real evaluation of the potential of the bio-amendments on soil quality and crop yields. The Long-Term Fertilizer Experiments (LTFEs) are invaluable for the study of yield trends, changes in nutrient dynamics and balances, predicting soil carrying capacity, assessing soil quality and system sustainability and risk management. In India, the LTFEs were established in the early seventies of the last century. Since then, these experiments are assessed periodically for the changes of soil fertility or biochemical parameters. The best plant growth of onion resulted from poultry manure with bio-fertilizer. The bio-fertilizer resulted an increase in the parameters of onion plant as compared to without bio-fertilizer treatment. The poorest plant growth observed from farmer practices without bio-fertilizer treatment. It was found that combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer along with bio-fertilizer improved soil fertility, soil physical and chemical properties and increased crop yields that resulted in sustained and successful crop production. Therefore, it is suggested to make a fertilizer/ manure management strategy which ensures sufficient nutrient supply for high and stable productivity of onion.

In eastern Uganda, soils have been characterised as limited in Nitrogen. Soil management technologies were therefore incorporated into farming systems in Tororo district, eastern Uganda. The objectives were to determine: the optimal combinations of legume cover crops or biomass transfer species and inorganic fertilizers for replenishing fertility; the acceptance levels and the farmer perceptions of 8 shrub- and tree species. Partial budgeting, linear programming analysis and descriptive statistics were used as analytical tools. 100% Mucuna pruriens incorporation and 0.9 t ha-1 Tithonia diversifolia incorporation with an inorganic nitrogen application at the rate of 30 kilograms hectare-1 were found to be the optimal soil management options on 0.045 and 0.872 hectares of land respectively, with investment costs of 495,120 Uganda Shillings.The major problematic aspects were technology accessibility and labour constraints. The strengthening of advisory services, government facilitated input delivery through private sector supply would play a critical role in soil fertility replenishment in Uganda.

India is one of the largest producer of safflower and ranks first in acreage, accounting about 36% of the world total area. Nutrient management is the major factor which influences the productive capacity of soils. Fertilizer is the major input through which the productivity can be increased by exploiting the varietal potential, since the cost of inputs of major nutrients through chemical fertilizers is increasing. Hence, this supports the integrated nutrient management approach not only to boost the production but also to preserve the ecosystem and to maintain its health. The conjunctive use of organics with the nitrogen fertilizer increased the use efficiency of nitrogen, improves the soil health and minimizes soil pollution. The results showed that performance of safflower crop improved significantly with integrated use of inorganic and organic sources of N (Farm Yard Manure/Poultry manure/Vermicompost) when compared with the application of inorganic N alone. Among the different combinations tried, application of 50 % N through inorganic fertilizer + 50% N through VC recorded highest seed yield, oil yield and also improves soil fertility leading to better soil health.

In India, there is sufficient availability of organic manures like animal dung manure (791.6 mt), crop residues (603.5 mt), green manure (4.50 m ha), rural compost (148.3 mt), city compost (12.2 mt) and biofertilizer (0.41 mt)and these may become a good substitute of chemical fertilizers to maintain the soil physico-chemical and biological properties. An attempt is made here to demonstrate that very useful information about fertility in a population can be obtained from the age-specific fertility rates (ASFR) by Constructing Non-Reproductive Life Tables (NRLT). NRLT is constructed by assuming that a hypothetical cohort of women, not affected by mortality (and/or migration), experiences in its reproductive life time the given set of ASFR by Single years of age. From the NRLT several summary Indexes are obtained which provide more information on fertility in a population than only Total Fertility Rate (TFR), commonly used in fertility analysis. From the same ASFR, a Reproductive Life Table Parity Distribution is computed, from which Parity Progression Ratios (RLT-PPR) and Closed Birth Intervals (RLT-CBI) are obtained. All these measures being standardized measures are very useful in comparing fertility over time & between populations. Further, a methodology is presented for making ASFR projections using Revised Sivamurthy’s PC Model for representing ASFR schedule. The Indian data are used to illustrate the application of these methods. It is hoped that all countries will publish these Tables as part of their Official Statistics.

This investigation addresses the balancing of fertilizer application rates for a major cereal crop, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Mollisol of Uttarakhand by developing fertilizer adjustment equation-based targeted yield concept. Two approaches were followed to develop the equations for optimizing the rates of N-P-K fertilizers: 1. only chemical fertilizer, and 2. Integrated nutrient management (INM) by using the components like Nutrient requirement (NR), Contribution from soil (Cs), Contribution from fertilizers (CF) and Contribution from FYM (CFYM). The outcome of the study can successfully be used in the larger parts of tarai region of Uttarakhand as a potent guide for efficient fertilizer management by reducing cost of cultivation, increasing fertilizer-use efficiency and keeping the soil-environment pollution free, and maintaining soil quality and soil health with judicious use of chemical fertilizers.

To accomplish this, the research adopts a single case study design, and it considers a significant amount of qualitative, secondary data.The research first notes that Volkswagen failed in its crisis management prevention tactics, as it was unable to detect the crisis at an early stage. Moreover, the study reveals that VW implemented several immediate crisis management measures for a quick turnaround management. Instead of concentrating on a specific crisis response theory, it is evident that VW made use of different crisis response strategies. VW took full responsibility for the crisis, promising transparency, but it also shifted the blame onto a small group of employees, suggesting that the company was also the victim of human error. Finally, the study reveals the significant impact of the crisis on each stakeholder group, which reveals that VW struggled to regain stakeholder trust and did not keep its promise of transparency. ISO was found most significant measure as it had appreciably affected all the parameters except inventory level of finished goods, R&D activity, lead time of R&D, total production cost, cost due to customer complaints and cost due to rework. Quality Circles was found the second most important measure as it had significant impact on inventory levels of raw materials, R&D activity, lead time of R&D, total production cost, cost due to customer complaints, cost due to rework/re-inspection, and performance of the suppliers. 5S, suggestion schemes and workers participation were found least significant measures as these measures had affected only a few parameters. JIT was found the most insignificant measures. This is because of unstable demand, lack of proper training of employees to implement JIT. Moreover the small firms are owner managed and they try to implement the measures within their own constraints and not according to the requirement of the measures The firms, which have implemented multiple productivity improvement measures, had performed better than those having single measure. Soil erosion has been one of the major problems undermining agricultural production in Ethiopia. Consequently, efforts are being made by the government to tackle the adverse effect of soil erosion via Food-for-Work and Cash-for-Work programs. However, the existing literature shows that the achievements of such programs are far from the expectations. Does such an experience mean that there is no hope for soil conservation practices in Ethiopia? Absolutely it is doubtful, the problem could have been rather, the campaigns that have been undertaken in Ethiopia for soil conservation practices have failed to consider local peoples’ willingness to pay for such projects from the very initiation of conservation measures. This motivates that, adequate understanding of the socio economic circumstances is required to determine the household’s soil conservation demand behavior and the factors that determine their willingness to pay for it. The land is limited entity of the country, which compel us to increase production and productivity of land per unit area and to rehabilitate the problematic soil for crop production, forestation and to maintain friendly ecosystem. In our country land is subjected to various types of degradation out of which 9.38mha suffered from sodicity and alkalinity. It is developed by accumulation of excessive salts in upper surface of soil. Sodic soil has high concentration of CO3,HCO3 and excess of Na on the exchangeable site of clay particles. They are deficient in nitrogen, phosphorous and zinc such soil has high pH (greater than 8.5, sometime upto 10.7) and poor soil structure. The nitrogen fixing ability of tree legume allows them to grow on difficult sites subject to erosion, low fertility or other adverse soil conditions. Once established they can create conditions favorable for the growth of other species leading to balanced plant ecosystem. The work represented in this book is significant in understanding morpho-physiological and biochemical features of the test plants and their contribution in bioreclamation of degraded (sodic) soil through improvement in its physical character.

Natural resource degradation in the highlands of Ethiopia is caused by many factors among which soil erosion is the major one threatening the overall development of the country. Previous Strategies and technologies to conserve the natural resource often failed and neglected the participation and needs of the land users. Therefore, the major objective of this study was assessing different soil and water conservation practices, farmers’ perception of erosion hazards, and their constraints to participate the continued use of soil and water conservation with the aim of proposing measures that address problems related to natural resource degradation. The study was conducted in Debark woreda of the Simen Mountain National park boundaries. A total of 100 household heads were selected from five kebeles by using simple random sampling method. Focus group discussion, key-informant interview and field observation were conducted to generate data. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, frequency distribution and correlation were used for analysis.
