For the past three decades, we have been steadily creating an extreme 'time-crunch economy' that has affected jobs, portfolios, businesses and lives. But the 'time-crunch economy' is turning into 'the leisure economy' and it will mean wrenching adjustments for our lives and institutions. Everyone from consumers, investors, businesses, and policy-makers will need to understand the changes afoot. The Leisure Economy posits profound economic changes in North America due to both the retirement of the baby boomers and the attitudes of ascendant generations X and Y. Friedrich List National System of Political Economy - Volume 2. The Theory

If we wish to remain true to the laws of logic and of the nature of things, we must set the economy of individuals against the economy of societies, and discriminate in respect to the latter between true political or national economy... and cosmopolitan economy, which originates in the assumption that all nations of the earth form but one society living in a perpetual state of peace.-from "Chapter 11: Political and Cosmopolitical Economy"One of the most prominent economic philosophers of the 19th century, on a par with-but espousing quite different thinking than-Karl Marx and Adam Smith explores, in the three-volume National System of Political Economy, a reasoned doctrine of national and pan-national management of trade, a global collaboration between government and business. In Volume 2, he delineates his theory of supportive interconnectedness, discussing everything from the value of the individual's ability to produce wealth to the edge established businesses have over new ones. A close reading of this 1841 classic is an absolute necessity for anyone who hopes to understand world economic history of the last 150 years.German economist and journalist FRIEDRICH LIST (1789-1846) served as professor of administration and politics at the University of Tübingen, but was later jailed and later exiled to America for his political views. His is also the author of Outlines of American Political Economy (1827).

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Allgemeines und Theorien, Note: 4.08/5.0, Covenant University (College of Leadership and development Studies), Veranstaltung: International Relations, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This study is focused on changing the culture of Nigeria's economy from a mono-product oil based economy to a diversified economy. Although the non-oil sector of Nigeria's economy is a vast one, this study focuses on the African catfish aquaculture industry because of its huge lucrative potentials of contribution to the diversification of Nigeria's economy. This research will help the average Nigerian citizen who is being ravaged with poverty due to the on-going economic recession that keeps coming back in every administration. It will also help policy makers promulgate sound policies that support economy diversification and condemn the mono-cultural nature of the economy. Since Nigeria leads the production of African Catfish on the continent of Africa this research should make the government see sense in investing in the production of African Catfish on a large scale which in turn will generate massive employment and contribute to the diversification of the economy leading to economic wealth and sustainable development instead of spending $700 million USD on importing fish every year. Lastly, it will help future researchers in the field of international trade and economy since the motive is to add to the gro...

Afşar Emre The Turkish Political Economy After the 2000-2001 Financial Crises

Following the most severe financial crises since WW2, the Turkish economy demonstrated a stellar growth performance after 2001. The strong commitment to the fiscal discipline and to the powerful external anchors such as the IMF and EU were key to this success. The central question is what motivated the JDP government to show this long-lasting commitment to the fiscal discipline and the external anchors particularly to the IMF-induced economic programs. Growing ties with the global economy, the new institutional framework, the new balance of power within the networks shaping the Turkish political economy and the successful implementation of the JDP's prudent political economy agenda are the four plausible explanations for the central question. Each of these explanations is elaborated in a separate chapter and the growing ties with the global economy prevail as the most competent explanation since it directly contributes to the emerging of the other three explanations.

Andrea Sommariva The Political Economy of the Space Age. How Science and Technology Shape the Evolution of Human Society

This book provides answers to the questions of why human-kind should go into space, and on the relative roles of governments and markets in the evolution of the space economy. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to answer those questions. Science and technology define the boundaries of what is possible. The realization of the possible depends on economic, institutional, and political factors. The book thus draws from many different academic areas such as physical science, astronomy, astronautics, political science, economics, sociology, cultural studies, and history. In the literature, the space economy has been analyzed using different approaches from science and technology to the effects of public expenditures on economic growth and to medium term effects on productivity and growth. This book brings all these aspects together following the evolutionary theory of economic change. It studies processes that transform the economy through the interactions among diverse economic agents, governments, and the extra-systemic environment in which governments operate. Its historical part helps to better understand motivations and constraints - technical, political, and economical - that shaped the growth of the space economy. In the medium term, global issues - such as population changes, critical or limited natural resources, and environmental damages – and technological innovations are the main drivers for the evolution of the space economy beyond Earth orbit. In universities, th...

On top of that, the Japanese economy is the second largest in theworld. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Japans has been $ 4.7 trillions inthe year 2000. This makes Japans economy about 2.5 times larger than theGerman one measured in Dollars.1 In the light of Japans extraordinary role inworld economics, it would be very interesting to look at the background ofJapans historical development of economics. Unfortunately there is non or littleknowledge in Germany about this. The picture, we have here, is ofteninfluenced by clichés such as the Japanese imperialism, the pervasivegovernment bureaucracy and the impressing Japanese economic growth. However, the economy in Japan is no longer growing. Desai revitalizes revolutionary intellectual traditions which combine class and national perspectives on 'the relations of producing nations'. Ajaat Gunti Liberalisation of the Indian economy

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: With the onset of reforms to liberalise the Indian economy in July of 1991, a new chapter has dawned for India and her billion plus population. This period of economic transition has had a tremendous impact on the overall economic development of almost all major sectors of the economy, and its effects over the last decade can hardly be overlooked. Besides, it also marks the advent of the real integration of the Indian economy into the global economy. This era of reforms has also ushered in a remarkable change in the Indian mindset, as it deviates from the traditional values held since Independence in 1947, such as „self reliance” and socialistic policies of economic development, which mainly due to the inward looking restrictive form of governance, resulted in the isolation, overall backwardness and inefficiency of the economy, amongst a host of other problems. This, despite the fact that India has always had the potential to be on the fast track to prosperity. Now that India is in the process of restructuring her economy, with aspirations of elevating herself from her present desolate position in the world, the need to speed up her economic development is even more imperative. And having witnessed the positive role that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played in the rapid economic growth of most of the Southeast Asian countries and most notably China, India has embarked on an ambitious plan to emulate the successes of her neighbours to the east and...

Alexandra Steinberg More and more plugged Social Representations of the New Economy

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This study set out to explore representations of the new economy amongst business professionals in Internet enabled business. Going beyond the new economy-‘hype’, the study was aimed at understanding the ways that business professionals make sense of the contemporary economy. In doing so, a social psychological perspective was taken, allowing multiple realities to emerge. Behavioural economists’ and economic psychologists’ conceptualisations of economic life are challenged. They hinge on the presumption that individuals act independently from their social environment and deviate as cognitive misers from a single legitimate economic rationality. By contrast, this study drew on a social constructionist framework. More specifically, it employed social representations theory (Moscovici, 1961/76; Moscovici, 1984), which rehabilitated common sense as a legitimate form of knowledge. The theory of social representations as a theory of knowledge proved as a sensitive and more sophisticated tool to analyse contemporary economy in its manifestations in professionals’ common sense. It is suggested to view the notion of common sense independently of role constellations. Given this framework, this study took a ‘snapshot’ of the contemporary representational field of the new economy amongst business professionals. Particularly, the study was focused on exploring the ‘taken-for-granted’ and beliefs underpinning discourses and symbols. Data from semi-structured intervi...

With the rise of the sharing economy and the increasing numbers of cross-contextual users, this research aims at the lack of trust transference possibilities across the Peer-to-Peer applications and has the goal to find out whether and how trust can be transferred between the platforms, so that new users do not have to create their reputation from scratch every time they join a new platform. First, this research provides an in-depth literature review of trust transfer theories. Secondly, a conceptual research model for the role of the imported trust in the context of the sharing economy is outlined and analysed by proposing and evaluating a questionnaire using structural equation modeling. Throughout the study, a three-dimensional scale of trust, i.e. ability, benevolence and integrity, is validated in the context of the sharing economy. The experimental study shows that both the overall and subdimensional trust in the provider is directly affected by the overall trust in the platform, the perceived reputation as well as the perceived social presence. The study also provides empirical evidence for the ex...

Awni Behnam Tracing the Blue Economy

Forming part of the Fondation de Malte's LUMEN Monograph Series, in this text Dr. Awni Behnam, President of the International Ocean Institute and former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, explores how we must live "with the ocean and from the ocean in a sustainable relationship".The interconnectedness of emerging global challenges is forcing a policy dimension change in the form of the Blue Economy as an integrated approach to the governance of the ocean and urban interface, revolving around the human dimension. The paradigm shift came when Elisabeth Mann Borgese - founder of the International Ocean Institute - viewed the situation from the seaward side, where a sustainable ocean economy integrates with and is inclusive of the Green Economy. She famously stated "if before you saw the sea and the sea floor as a continuation of the land, you now see the land as a continuation of the sea,"; the concept of the Blue Economy is an attempt to do justice to that genius vision.

The book, made up of three parts, covers a wide spectrum of political economy issues on post-apartheid South Africa. Although the text is mainly descriptive, to explain various areas of the political economy of post-apartheid South Africa, the first and the last parts provide illuminating insights on the kind of society that is emerging during the twenty-one years of democracy in the country. The book discusses important aspects of the political history of apartheid South Africa and the evolution of post-apartheid society, including an important recap of the history of southern Africa before colonialism. The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Madeleine Block Quantitative Analysis of Intra-organizational Knowledge Sharing

During the last decades the world economy has experienced significant transformations. The pace of change is still showing no sign of slowing down. Financial globalization and rapid merge of information and communication technologies have integrated the world economy. The world economy has been turned from an industrial into a "knowledge economy". Knowledge has become a strategic asset for firms and the ability to manage knowledge seems to be the crucial management skill now in the "knowledge age". It is assumed as basis of the knowledge economy in sense of sharing knowledge and creating new knowledge for commercial advantage. Findings of the research about the factors of knowledge sharing process indicate that the success of intra-organizational knowledge sharing in firms is determined to be an important extent of social relationships between the people and departments involved. This book provides interesting insights to the concepts of knowledge and social capital. It shows how they take effect in real life business: what role does trust and trustworthiness play? Do we need shared visions? Can the existence and the effect shared values be measured? - Interesting questions? Yes, indeed. And the answers given in this book are even based on statistical hard facts from empirical data. And this is not always the case in books that deal with issues on the borderline between economic and social science.

A refreshing, insightful look into the political and economic dynamics driving globalization today Globalization: it's earlier than you think. That's the provocative message of Against the Dead Hand, which traces the rise and fall of the century-long dream of central planning and top-down control and its impact on globalization-revealing the extent to which the «dead hand» of the old collectivist dream still shapes the contours of today's world economy. Mixing historical narrative, thought-provoking arguments, and on-the-scene reporting and interviews, Brink Lindsey shows how the economy has grown up amidst the wreckage of the old regime-detailing how that wreckage constrains the present and obscures the future. He conveys a clearer picture of globalization's current state than the current conventional wisdom, providing a framework for anticipating the future direction of the world economy.

Christopher Wood The Bubble Economy. Japan's Extraordinary Speculative Boom of the '80s and the Dramatic Bust of the '90s

The Bubble Economy tells the story of the greatest failure of Japanese economic management since 1945. In the second half of the 1980s Japan's financial madness and arrogance centered on a booming stockmarket and rocketing land prices, which dragged the solid manufacturing economy into a whirlwind of outrageous speculation. Then the boom when spectacularly bust, leaving in its wake a withered stockmarket, crashing land prices, mountains of bad loans, an economy in recession, and a slew of political and financial scandals, graphically exposing the seedy underbelly of Japan's feudal finance system. The Bubble Economy reveals how Japan is spending the first half of the 1990s paying off these excesses in a process that threatens the world's economies with dire consequences, and questions many of the myths built up around Japanese management, pointing to levels of incompetence never before thought possible.

Jamila Mohme Disrupting structural constraints. The influence of sustainable entrepreneurship on the transition towards a more sustainable economy

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 8,0, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (Nijmegen School of Management), course: International Management, language: English, abstract: For the last five decades, one important goal has driven the world economy: The pursuit of growth. As the economy expands, the resource implications associated with it cannot be ignored any longer. In less than a decade, we may face significant scarcity in key resources, such as oil. Out of scholarly discussion it emerged that a transition towards a new form of capitalist development is needed, a transition towards an economy which is in line with the objectives of a sustainable society. Sustainable entrepreneurship, a form of entrepreneurship that combines ecologic, social and economic sustainability, has been generally declared as suited to advance this so-called 'sustainability transition'. However, scholars have neglected to investigate the 'how' and 'why' of such an assumption. This Master Thesis aims at filling this research gap by answering the following research question:In what way can sustainable entrepreneurship influence a transition towards a more sustainable economy? In doing so, the thesis is structured into three different research papers, each using a different research method to reach the following goals:1. Providing a concise definition of the term "sustainable entrepreneurship" and ...

The idea is to source the roots of the economic stability and performance of Latin America?s largest country and to highlight the implications it will have in the near and remote future. Chapter 2 focuses on the Real Plan launched in 1994. A set of reforms which transformed Brazil's economy from a protected economy facing four-digit inflation rates into a stable economy capable of competing with developed economies. It discusses the implementation of the Real Plan, its measures and its positive and negative consequences for the Brazilian economy.Furthermore we are going to deal with the recent past of Brazil's economy since the presidential elections in 2002, when the leader of the workers' party Lula da Silva was elected. We focus on the economic policy of the president and its government, whose election has almost led to the default of the Brazilian state because financial markets were afraid that the socialist candidate would pursue a 180 degree turn compared to the neoliberal economic policy of his predecessor. We analyze why Brazil was one of the last countries being affected by the financial...

Julia Maurer Sharing Economy. Regulatory Approaches for Combating Airbnb.s Controversy Regarding Taxation and Regulation

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Law - Tax / Fiscal Law, grade: 1,1, , language: English, abstract: Over the last few years, the sharing economy has grown substantially with new high-profile businesses emerging. Especially Airbnb became an integral part of the accommodation industry and disrupted traditional hotel and Bed and Breakfast businesses. However, at present, Airbnb has to face many controversies due to consumer safety, regulatory and tax evasion issues. As regulators and legislators established laws and regulations with the traditional economy in mind, they are not suited for the sharing economy and application often remains uncertain, especially in the area of taxation. Consequently, the difficulty of establishing an effective regulatory framework for the sharing economy is receiving considerable attention currently. Therefore, this thesis aims to identify some of the challenges that will be of concern to regulators when developing a regulatory framework and outlines some guiding principles for regulating Airbnb. Finally, this thesis finds that a self-regulatory approach could be the most effective solution to encounter the difficulties and controversy.

Sriyantha Fernando Theoretical structure of a tourism focused CGE model for measuring economic impact of an economy

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, University of Kelaniya, course: Economic Modelling, language: English, abstract: Measuring the contribution of tourism to a national economy has always been a frustrating exercise. Tourism does not have specific products. It represents the sum of expenditure by travellers for wide range of products. It is not possible to identify tourism as a single "industry" in the national accounts, its value to the economy is not readily revealed. As a result of the absence of tourism in official economic statistics, there is often an on-going battle to establish tourism credibility as an economic activity and generator of income in the economy. As a result, a significant volume of tourism research over the past few decades have focussed on the development and use of a variety of economic techniques aimed at quantifying the effects of tourism on an economy. In conventional literature has proven that Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling is the best applied tool addressing and analysing tourism related issues in an economy. The paper provided a complete description of the theoretical structure of the CGE-Tourism including all equations and variables by using relevant Excerpts for different blocks of equations in the TABLO file associated with the GEMPACK software used to operationalise the model. The incorporation of tourism using the dummy sector approach into an ORANI type CGE model as an extension and can be co...

It addresses the advantages and disadvantages. More in depth this paper investigates the determinants of financial services sector investments abroad. Monetary policies are very important in any economy. However, they are dominantly hectic and characterized with frequent changes in developing countries. In Sudan, there were many changes during the past three decades, mostly were not compatible with coherent economic logic. The country's economy degenerated from being the leading African economy after dependance in 1956 to the 1960's to stand on the brink of economic extinction in the 2000's and virtual bankruptcy in 2012. Frequent changes in macroeconomic policies affected the essence and logic of money supply and demand. That eventually affected the economic sectors and their productive abilities.
