Osadola Oluwaseun Samuel Diplomacy in the context of the Nigeria Civil War

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject African Studies, grade: none, , course: International Studies and Diplomacy, language: English, abstract: War is the highest form of political struggle for resolving contradictions, when they have developed to a certain stage either between classes, nations, states or political groups. Hence, the rapport between war and peace is being determined by the approach or position of diplomacy. Since the failure of diplomacy usually laid the basis for the start of war, and after all wars, peace often reign, it is of enormous significance to recognize the important relationship between war and diplomacy. Like all civil wars, the Nigerian civil war was unique in the context of the nation's history. This is because it was the most vivid expression of a country turned against itself. As with civil wars in other countries, the Nigerian civil war can be analyzed within the context of a failed diplomatic act. Hence, this paper discussed the position of negotiation or peace talk before and after the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970. It has also looked at the general impact of diplomacy during the period of the crisis.

Benedict Winter Is there a Crisis in/of Diplomacy.

Buzzword like Globalisation, Network or Information Society and Information Age seem to be indispensable in current contribution concerning foreign affairs. Indeed, the world has never been more interdependent and connected. In this context, governments and think tanks around the world recently re-evaluate the functions and purpose of diplomatic services by identifying the constituting factors of change and formulate according recommendations and policies with the aim to cope with an accelerated ever-changing environment. In this context, this paper aims to identify the impact of Information and Communication Technology and the Information Revolution upon diplomacy. Recent studies indicate that institutions concerned with diplomacy are not equipped to fulfil their responsibilities within the new environment. After elaborating on the major changes in the environment of diplomacy, an (idealistic but constructive) attempt is made to qualify some of the assumptions and conclusions of the primaryliterature by putting them into a wider perspective. Finally addressing the question if, and in which concern, there is a Crisis in/of Diplomacy.

Evans P. Aryabaha The Role of the Beijing Olympics in China.s Public Diplomacy

The 2008 Beijing Olympics were ardently sought, lavishly staged and hugely successful. China successfully used the Olympics as a tool of public diplomacy with a positive impact on its politics, economics and environment. But how did Beijing beat the odds to stage the most spectacular Olympic event in history; and with what impact? China's Public Diplomacy is reinforced and undercut by authoritarianism... Yet, global status demands more transparency and greater accountability. As PD becomes increasingly indispensable in the management of external affairs, China's Olympic experience offers wider lessons. This book examines a topical issue of growing currency and wide relevancy to PD; puts the Olympics in a national and international context; highlights the paradox of China's Public Diplomacy; underscores China's successful national brand image as an emerging global power; offers valuable insights into deeper understanding of the rising China and its importance as a workshop of the world. The book is, therefore, a pleasant, interesting and invaluable reading for students and practitioners of diplomacy as well as those interested in modern China and contemporary international relations.

Jan-David Blaese International Institutions and the Power of the Eu. How Has It Been Affected by the Financial Crisis.

Power shifts happened several times throughout history, but they do not occur frequently and are often connected with the use of force. Presently, there is a power shift from the western industrialized states, e.g., from member states of the European Union (EU), to Asian states, in particular China. However, in spite of this growth, it is disputed to what extent the rise of these economies already transcended into power and how it will develop in the future. What is clear by now is that the recent global financial and economic crisis was the worst one in post World War II history. The crisis emerged in the United States and then spread to the EU and to other countries. It led to quickly rising public debt levels in western industrialized states.During this time, states like China or India extended their participation within global economic governance foras, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the G20. This raises the question of how the power of the European Union within these international institutions was affected by the crisis? The purpose of this publication is to research this question.Consequently, the examination is situated within the domain of the global financial and economic crisis, the shift of power and the power of the EU in international institutions. In order to give an answer to the above stated question, the power shift in international institutions during the time of crisis is to be assessed. The IMF and the G20 are analyzed in depth in order to...

The concept appeared as a mostly academic term, but soon it also became widely applied by practitioners. In this book are analyzed three models of contemporary public diplomacy: American model, Chinese and Russian.

Until today, the puzzling events occurred in the crisis prompt numerous questions, particularly in the scientific area. This research paper, therefore, aims the conduction of illustrating the main happenings during the crisis in order to be able to analyze them by using the three Conceptual Models developed by Graham T. Allison and Philip Zelikow. Allison and Zelikow use these models to give an adequate explanation of how the process of decision-making proceeds, taking the crisis as a case study and answering three main questions: Why did the Soviet Union decide to place offensive missiles in Cuba? Why did the United States respond to the missile deployment with a blockade? Why did the Soviet Union withdraw the missiles? For a better evaluation, this research paper thus, contextualizes firstly the Cuban Missile Crisis by explicating occurrences in the Cold War. Secondly, the suspenseful thirteen days during the Cuban Missile Crisis will be illuminated. Thirdly, in the last chapter, the models are outlined and used to answer the three puzzling questions stated above.

Robert Sarvik, Peter Houli Lessons from the Financial Crisis

The financial crisis has been demanding for a majority of organisations, institutions and nations across the globe. Many factors have influenced the situation and how it was handled. This thesis analyses the way organisations have interpreted and handled the financial crisis from a communicative perspective with emphasis on management. With a starting point in issues and crisis management, three international organisations are analysed - KIA, Citroën, and UBS - and the way the've handled the financial crisis as well as how media have portrayed them. Theories defining the fields today are compared to how they are practiced in reality. The analysis of the theories demonstrates discrepancies between what is written in literature and how it is actually practiced. The three organisations have had different presuppositions and have handled the situation differently. This has enabled us to contribute and revise theories during the analysis, adding possibilities for the development of the fields by merging or at least clarifying a stronger link between issues and crisis management.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Cumbria, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine the crisis management and crisis communication of the German car company Volkswagen (VW) in its recent emissions scandal. This study aims to analyse the applied crisis management and communication strategies of Volkswagen by evaluating the crisis´ impact on each stakeholder group. To accomplish this, the research adopts a single case study design, and it considers a significant amount of qualitative, secondary data. The research first notes that Volkswagen failed in its crisis management prevention tactics, as it was unable to detect the crisis at an early stage. Moreover, the study reveals that VW implemented several immediate crisis management measures for a quick turnaround management. Instead of concentrating on a specific crisis response theory, it is evident that VW made use of different crisis response strategies. VW took full responsibility for the crisis, promising transparency, but it also shifted the blame onto a small group of employees, suggesting that the company was also the victim of human error. Finally, the study reveals the significant impact of the crisis on each stakeholder group, which reveals that VW struggled to regain stakeholder trust and did not keep its promise of transparency. Thus, the study concludes by presenting future recommen...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 2,0, University of Twente (School of Management and Governance), language: English, abstract: The United Kingdom has been at the epicentre of the global financial crisis erupting in 2007. The City of London's global interconnectedness as well as the long-established culture of regulatory self-independence triggered a near meltdown in the British banking system. Next to the immediate consequences for the British economy as a whole, the financial crisis led to a fundamental change of direction in national economic policies and destabilized a system of politics that had governed financial regulation in the UK for over two decades. The Thatcher administration had replaced the decaying manufacturing industry with a finance-led service sector and hence made the City of London the centrepiece of a self-ruling world based on the principles of privatisation and deregulation. The banking crash in September 2007, however, destroyed the illusion that an economic system which relied on light-touch financial regulation to promote the international competitiveness of the City was competent at the job of securing financial stability. The scale and prolonged effects of the financial crisis provided the central backdrop to the general election in May 2010. The financial crisis spurred ad-hoc policy responses around the globe and energized efforts to strengthen financial ...

In this updated, second edition of the highly acclaimed international best seller, The Dollar Crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures, Richard Duncan describes the flaws in the international monetary system that have destabilized the global economy and that may soon culminate in a deflation-induced worldwide economic slump. The Dollar Crisis is divided into five parts: Part One describes how the US trade deficits, which now exceed US$1 million a minute, have destabilized the global economy by creating a worldwide credit bubble. Part Two explains why these giant deficits cannot persist and why a US recession and a collapse in the value of the Dollar are unavoidable. Part Three analyzes the extraordinarily harmful impact that the US recession and the collapse of the Dollar will have on the rest of the world. Part Four offers original recommendations that, if implemented, would help mitigate the damage of the coming worldwide downturn and put in place the foundations for balanced and sustainable economic growth in the decades ahead. Part Five, which has been newly added to the second edition, describes the extraordinary evolution of this crisis since the first edition was completed in September 2002. It also considers how the Dollar Crisis is likely to unfold over the years immediately ahead, the likely policy response to the crisis, and why that response cannot succeed. The Dollar Standard is inherently flawed and increasingly unstable. Its collapse will be the most important economic event of the 21st Century.

Like all scientific studies, international relations can be best understood by the aid of theories. The theorization of international relations emerged during the interwar period with liberalists calling for a collective security system to replace the balance of power policy which was being fronted by the realists. Since the turn of the 20th century when interstate relations intensified, it has always been hard to talk about international relations without making a reference to the three grand theories; realism, Marxism, and liberalism. This paper will therefore present and evaluate these three main theories. These theories have extensively been used by different scholars to explain and predict interstate behaviours in the international system. International relations theories are also described as a set of ideas that explain the nature of the international system while predicting the outcomes from actions by major players in international relations. These theories reflect what transpires in international relations and this implies that their concepts reflect what happens on...

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Saarbrücken (Faculty of Business and Economics), language: English, abstract: The Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were both forced to implement unconventional monetary policy measures as a response to the severe impact of the global financial crisis and its aftermath. In the first stage of the global financial crisis, the conventional and unconventional monetary policy measures implemented by the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were fairly similar. Both central banks focused on providing the banking sector with liquidity in order to restore interbank lending as it was a key element of ensuring a functional monetary transmission mechanism. However, when the global financial crisis transformed to a sovereign debt crisis in the euro area in 2010, the European Central Bank faced increasing divergence in sovereign spreads and the potential insolvency of euro area Member States. Therefore, its unconventional monetary policy measures focused on credit easing by purchasing sovereign as well as covered bonds in order to improve banks' and governments' funding costs. By contrast, the Federal Reserve System massively purchased government bonds and focused on decreasing interest rates and asset prices through the use of quantitative easing.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg (Institut für Journalistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft), language: English, abstract: In these difficult times of the European sovereign debt crisis, this project aims at exploring the effect of this unprecedented crisis situation onto the sense of a European identity. For this purpose, the research Question has been formulated as follows: How has a sense of European identity been affected by the European sovereign debt crisis? The notion of a European identity which lies at the heart of this study is everything but new to the policy makers in Brussels, to social theorists and to political scientists from around the globe. As elusive as the concept of a European identity might first appear, the sheer amount of academic publications, research projects, think tanks and media coverage that have contemplated the notion of European identity, indicate its fundamental importance to the future of the European project and its institutions. Given the fundamentally altered circumstances, which Europe has been facing since the onset of the European debt crisis in late 2009, it becomes necessary to reassess the contemporary state of an evolving sense of European identity. As large parts of the Academic community and various EU lead polls have suggested, the interplay between national and supra-national "imagined communities" and the E...

High tariff barriers and the absence of free trade were seen as one of the main reasons for the Great Depression in the 1920s. To prevent such international economic crisis in the future the United States of America pushed forward negotiations about international economic cooperation that led to the GATT. Until today the imitation of the GATT, the WTO, is - together with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank - the most important international economic cooperation.Cooperation between states only comes into being if certain requirements are fulfilled. The different theories of international relations aim to explain under which circumstances such international cooperation emerges. Thereby each of these theories is based on different assumptions, i.e. about state behavior or the shape of the international system. The central research question of this paper is how good these assumptions of different theories fit the reality. The objective is therefore to test if and how theories of internatio...

Hussein Alasrag Global Financial crisis and Islamic finance

The world economy is currently facing a severe global crisis that has spilled from the financial sector to the real economy. The crisis can be traced back to July 2007 with the liquidity crisis due to the loss of confidence in the mortgage credit markets in the United States. The hope was that the crisis would be restricted to financial markets, with few repercussions on the real economy and the rest of the world. This hope was shattered in September 2008 as the crisis entered an acute phase, with strong downward fluctuations in the stock markets, substantially reduced rates of economic growth, and accompanied by increases in unemployment. The severity of this crisis has led to the evaluation of the foundations of the capitalist financial system and the search for ideas and solutions.Islamic economists contend that Islamic finance has an alternative that would prevent the recurrence of a similar crisis. This paper tries to note the main causes and the impacts of the financial and economic crisis. In addition to discuss the belief that the Islamic finance is a viable alternative to the ailing global financial system.

Nothing tests a leader like a crisis. The highly charged, dramatic events surrounding a crisis profoundly affect the people in an organization and can even threaten the organization's survival. But there are actions a leader can take before, during, and after a crisis to effectively reduce the duration and impact of these extremely difficult situations. At its center, effective crisis leadership is comprised of three things--communication, clarity of vision and values, and caring relationships. Leaders who develop, pay attention to, and practice these qualities go a long way toward handling the human dimension of a crisis. In the end, it's all about the people.

Andreas Hahn Between Presidential Power and Legislative Veto. The Impact of Polity and Politics on Economic Reforms in Brazil

Doktorarbeit / Dissertation aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Systeme - Allgemeines und Vergleiche, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The pace and scope of the Brazilian economic development in the 1980s and 1990s is intrinsically linked to the wide-ranging discussion of political and economic reform projects. In the wake of the crisis of the import-substitution economic model a wide array of approaches and theories revolved around one basic question: When there occurs a crisis in the economy - whatever definition of crisis may be applied in a particular case - which are the best ways of overcoming anti-reform resistances, regain economic growth and promote sustainable and ―future-approved‖ development? In the most general sense a crisis of the political or economic system can be referred to as two-dimensional: on the one hand it means the shattering and dis-equilibrating of a formerly successful status quo, on the other hand it opens up the necessity to find a new status quo (or status quo post) that can be deemed compatible to the new economic, domestic as well as international, circumstances. In fact, the longer a prosperous status quo lasts, the more difficult a subsequent change will get. Path-dependencies develop, stable institutions arise, group interests and organizations take root and expectations about growth, inflation, external trade and other variables cement into place.

Jasmin Meyer Subprime Crisis and its Impacts on the Economies of Chile and Austria

Financial crises have existed at all times. Let us just think back to the biggest crisis ever in the year 1929, the Great Depression. The current financial crisis began as a real estate crisis in the United States of America in summer of 2007. About one year later, the crisis had spread over the whole world. This crisis is said to be the biggest since the Great Depression in 1929. Due to globalization and the interconnectedness of markets, soon the whole world got negatively affected by the current financial crisis. Among others, Chile and Austria had to register sharp economic slowdowns. The objective of the author is it to define which country will be more affected of the current crisis: Chile, the emerging economy that was said to be very well prepared to face the crisis; or Austria, the rich and well-developed, European economy?

Christian Fronz Strategic Management in Crisis Communication - A Multinational Approach

A corporate crisis situation is an integral part of a company's life cycle. On average, the probability that corporate manager will experience a corporate crisis situation within five years is almost as high as 82%. Multinational companies in particular face a higher potential because of their various external environments, extended media and respectively public interest in their actions, and consequently their dependence on different public opinions as well as the much wider impacts because of their publics' spread. Well planned and organisationally integrated multinational crisis communication is a key success factor in a crisis situation. Yet existing models and frameworks in crisis communication are rather tactically than strategically oriented, lack in of the depth of the guidance they provide, and present limitations in their scope of application. In addition, publications on crisis communication provided by experts with practical experience mainly deal with a wide field of case studies and neglect scientific applications; a holistic view on strategic multinational crisis communication is weak. The dissertation examines the nature of strategic multinational crisis communication and identifies their general organisational integration and coherences with corporate functions within a multinational environment. By following a theoretical analysis approach, deficiencies and weaknesses of existing crisis communication theories and the underlying literature will be iden...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Institut für Sozialpolitik), language: English, abstract: The financial crisis, which struck the EU countries in 2008, was followed by the severest economic recession since the end of the Second World War, involving a significant drop in GDP (negative economic growth) for most of them. Output growth has turned negative or stagnated in several countries, the impact on labour markets has led to rising unemployment rates and public debt and deficits have soared. In the aftermath of the crisis countries were confronted with a deteriorating social context, which is due to the severity of the economic downturn, the worsening job situation and the increased unemployment. This has resulted in a heightened need for social protection while at the same time making it more difficult to finance. The crisis has highlighted the role of social protection as a social buffer and an economic stabilizer that cushions the impact of recessions. Social benefits have been an essential element of national crisis response in the countries of the European Union. Social security programmes not only act as an important component of the crisis „exit strategy", helping to revitalize the economy but they also protect the most vulnerable part of society. One of the lessons that can be learned from the crisis is that countries and their inha...

Nevena Nancheva A European Crisis. Perspectives on Refugees, Solidarity, and Europe.

This is a book about the crisis of the European integration project as seen from the vantage point of people's movements across and to the European continent. But why should the issue of refugees or of migration have anything to do with the dynamics of the integration or disintegration of the European Union? If anything, the existing global refugee protection regime was conceived in Europe at about the time when Europe began to integrate: It was seen as a moral imperative in the context of European solidarity and in the face of crisis. How did refugee protection become so controversial as to usher in a crisis of its own? Why do European governments and their peoples see refugees and migrants as the cause of a crisis in and of Europe? Solidarity, legitimacy, democracy, welfare, rights: How has refugee migration undermined European positions on all that has defined EU integration so far? This collection engages with these questions by focusing on the construction of the crisis narrative, offering an insight into distinctly European perspectives on and analyses of political responses to refugees, migration, and economic challenges. The aim of the volume is to provide an empirical and thematic context for understanding the link between refugee migration and the overpowering perception of Europe in crisis.

Sunday Akindele Theory and Practice of Crisis Management

This book addresses the issue of crisis management using conflict perspective as a theoretical framework. In the process, attempt was made to examine the concepts of "conflict" "crisis" and "crisis management" as well as the role of third party intervention/mediation in a crisis. As a point of departure, the concept of theory was examined as the necessary basis for observational consideration of phenomena (e.g. crisis, conflicts, and violence) that are germane to friction-free human existence. Within this context, the affinity between theory and practice was examined in the context of real life relationship among Theorists, Academics, Policy Makers and other Practitioners. Relevant examples across the world (where applicable) were cited. What governments and their military/security advisers should do to effectively handle crisis situations was stressed. We concluded that the need for unbiased and mutually beneficial crisis resolution must not be taken for granted. We equally contended that a friction-free governance and peaceful existence is possible in spite of the fact that human society will continue to be characterized by conflicts and multiplicity of interests.

Radhika Desai offers a radical critique of the theories of US hegemony, globalisation and empire which dominate academic international political economy and international relations, revealing their ideological origins in successive failed US attempts at world dominance through the dollar. Desai revitalizes revolutionary intellectual traditions which combine class and national perspectives on 'the relations of producing nations'. At a time of global upheavals and profound shifts in the distribution of world power, Geopolitical Economy forges a vivid and compelling account of the historical processes which are shaping the contemporary international order.

As this monograph goes to press, the nuclear agreement negotiated between Iran and the so-called P5+1-the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council consisting of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, plus Germany-is the subject of heated debate within Washington. The negotiations that produced the agreement perhaps best exemplify the efforts by the Barack Obama administration to use diplomacy to address the most vexing security challenges of the day. The United States and Iran have struggled to overcome mutual hostility and distrust stemming from the 1953 coup against the Mohammad Mossadegh government and the 1979-80 hostage crisis, not to mention Teheran's use of Hezbollah as a proxy against American ally Israel. Yet despite this, the administration persisted over several years to first intensify and broaden economic sanctions against Iran, and then to engage in painstaking negotiations with an authoritarian country that routinely and methodically employs...
