Public scandals surrounding charitable nonprofit organizations have increased public scrutiny and criticism which resulted in an increased demand for accountability of charities and other nonprofit organizations. Reporting performance is necessary in order to be accountable for the organizations' performance. Performance reporting is more difficult in nonprofit organizations than in for-profit organizations since no profitability information can be communicated. Nonprofits tend to focus on other concepts to define performance; mainly efficiency, effectiveness and social value. The main theory on nonprofit performance is described in the Organizational Effectiveness literature. Impact assessment has been suggested as a way to measure nonprofit organizational performance. This concept is related to the effectiveness concept of goal attainment, but goes one step further and focuses on impact rather than mere outcomes. In this research a first attempt is made to measure the impact of a specific Dutch nonprofit organization, the Netherlands Heart Foundation. The impact is estimated on the costs related to AMI patients in the working population.

Faced with significant budget reductions, nonprofit organizations have moved beyond being one-dimensional entities that rely only on grants. Now, they attract social entrepreneurs who are determined to establish relationships before raising money—something that the late Dr. J. Gregory Dees, foresaw the need for in 1998 when he wrote about a hybrid structure that was enabling nonprofit organizations to generate additional income. Ultimately, Dees concluded that the hybrid structure with a social enterprise component would slow the mission of the nonprofit organization, leaving the social entrepreneur to think about how to create innovative strategies within social entrepreneurship. This book uses a case study focusing on the nonprofit organization, Rising Tide Capital, by expanding the scope of Dr. Dees’ research through an assessment of the meaning of social entrepreneurship, social enterprises, and financial stability. It also identifies financial stability through two processes of replication: replicable models through strategic partnerships and the mini-franchise of direct selling. Plot a path to bolster financial stability, think creatively about generating cash flow, and find alternative sources of funding with this guide to operating a successful nonprofit organization.

Risk management strategy for the pioneering technological sector Enterprise Risk and Opportunity Management provides much-needed guidance tailored specifically to the technological sector. While most enterprise risk management guides are written for traditional businesses and finance firms, this book translates effective enterprise risk and opportunity management (EROM) principles into strategies and practices that work for government, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations in the technological space. Originally designed for noncommercial pioneering enterprises like NASA, an entire chapter is now devoted toward applying the methods to profit-making technological enterprises. A 40-year veteran of the tech sector, Dr. Allan Benjamin outlines risk management strategies for organizations in which the advancement and integration of science and technology within complex systems is necessary for accomplishment of the mission. Commercial EROM strategies do not translate directly when the development and implementation of risky technologies is the organization's primary objective, and clumsy or near-sighted implementation can easily cripple progress. This book provides authoritative guidance tailored to the sector's specialized needs. Maximize opportunity while effectively managing risk Understand the core principles of the technological EROM approach and its interfaces with the management of the organization Comprehend the intricacies of aggregating risks and opportunities from lower to higher levels of the organization Gain expert insights specific to the technology sector Mitigate and control the risk that comes with pursuing discovery In practice, EROM in this sector involves working with mostly qualitative data, and is characterized by high uncertainty. Managing risk without handicapping the organization requires a specific set of adjustments to traditional EROM, and a more nuanced approach to the idea of "acceptable risk. Balance is key in technological EROM, and Enterprise Risk and Opportunity Management provides foundational guidance, real-world strategy, and enlightening examples for getting it right.

A volume in Research in Public ManagementSeries Editors: Lawrence R. Jones and Nancy C. Roberts, Naval Postgraduate SchoolVolunteer management has many challenges, not the least of which is how we study it and view it.Academics examine it from a variety of disciplines and practitioners experience it in a variety ofcontexts. However both approaches have limitations. In academia we go to public administrationschools to learn about public and nonprofit management, to business schools to apply the principlesof private enterprise to nonprofit management, to sociology departments to study the phenomenaof volunteerism, to psychology departments to understand the motives of volunteers, andeconomics departments to examine the value or economic worth of volunteerism. The liability ofthe academic approach is the segmentation of study and research into departmental areas. Thestudy of volunteers and volunteerism needs to cross all of these organizational and disciplineboundaries to be fully appreciated and understood as a field of interest. In contrast, practitionersview volunteer management from their own unique experiences. They try to gauge success in volunteermanagement based on what they have encountered in particular organizations, towns, cultures, and countries in which they work.As important as these insights are, they are difficult to generalize beyond local settings. Just because an individual has been successfulin working with volunteers, it does not mean that the lessons learn...

Recognizing the types of collaborative approaches, and their potential to solve public policy problems is quickly becoming a major task for public managers, with new methods and techniques constantly emerging. Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration provides specific examples and a framework for public managers to make strategic choices about how to engage private and nonprofit actors in delivering public goods and services while ensuring the public interest. The book provides effective methods for choosing, designing, governing, and evaluating networks, partnerships, and independent public-services providers, with in-depth discussion encompassing: Analysis and engagement of cross-sector organizations Fostering democratic accountability in the public interest Collaborative approaches (including contracts, networks and partnerships) and the issues associated with each type of arrangement Leadership and organizational learning in cross-sector collaboration Included case studies illustrate effective application of the concepts and methods described, providing both practicing public and nonprofit managers and public policy/administration students with insight into these emerging strategic alliances. The first comprehensive guide to public governance collaborations, Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration is an important and timely contribution to the field of public management.

The media forges a direct link between the public and emergency organizations and plays a very important role in disseminating vital information to the public before, during and after disasters. The media assists in the management of disasters by educating the public about disasters; warning of hazards; gathering and transmitting information about affected areas; alerting government officials, relief organizations and the public to specific needs; and facilitating discussions about disaster preparedness and response for continuous improvement. To help the media fulfill these roles, direct working relationships between the media and disaster management organizations should be established and maintained. Experience shows that regular interactions with the media before a disaster strikes, aids the effective flow of information and lays the groundwork for effective working relationships in the aftermath of a disaster.

This essential resource offers an overall understanding of nonprofits based on both the academic literature and practitioner experience. It shows how to lead, manage, govern, and structure effective and ethical nonprofit organizations. Managing Nonprofit Organizations reveals what it takes to be entrepreneurial and collaborative, formulate successful strategies, assess performance, manage change, acquire resources, be a responsible financial steward, and design and implement solid marketing and communication plans. «Managing Nonprofit Organizations is the only introductory text on this subject that manages to do three critical things equally well: It's comprehensive, covering all the key topics leaders of NPOs need to know about; it's practical, providing lots of examples, case incidents, and experiential exercises that connect the content to the real world; and, best of all (and most unique compared to others), it's research-based, drawing on the latest and best empirical studies that look into what works and doesn't work in the world of nonprofit management.» —Vic Murray, professor, School of Public Administration, University of Victoria «This book is a rarity—a text that can be used both as the focus for academic study and as a source of stimulating ideas for those practitioners who want to explore theories about management and how they can be applied so they can do a better job. Tschirhart and Bielefeld have explained all aspects of nonprofit management and leadership in a way that will stimulate as well as inform.» —Richard Brewster, executive director, National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise, Virginia Tech University «Managing Nonprofit Organizations presents a comprehensive treatment of this important topic. The book satisfies the competencies and curriculum guidelines developed by NASPAA and by NACC and would be ideal for instruction. The book maintains its commitment to informing management and leadership throughout the nonprofit sector.» —Jeffrey L. Brudney, Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, Cleveland State University «This is an important book, written by two of the leading scholars in the nonprofit studies field. Nonprofit managers, board members, funders, educators, and others will find Managing Nonprofit Organizations extremely valuable.» —Michael O'Neill, professor of nonprofit management, University of San Francisco «Here's the book that my students have been asking for—just the right mix of theory presentation, research findings, and practical suggestions to serve the thoughtful nonprofit management practitioner. It will inform, instruct, and ultimately, inspire.» —Rikki Abzug, professor of management, Anisfield School of Business, Ramapo College
