Bastiat was an advocate of the free market and limited government that defended an individual's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (indeed, he would have made an excellent early American). He is known today for his dynamic and witty essays against protectionism and government subsidy and control. Essays on Political Economy should be considered necessary reading for modern economists, historians, and political science scholars.French political libertarian and economist CLAUDE FRÉDÉRIC BASTIAT (1801-1850) was one of the most eloquent champions of the concept that property rights and individual freedoms flowed from natural law.

Over the course of nine lectures, Travers Triss educates on the evolution of the political economy and how the decisions and actions of previous and current leaders have shaped the most influential countries in Europe. Borrowing from popular publications like Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations and Adolphe Blanqui's L'Histore de l'Economie Politique in Europe, Triss summarizes and analyzes the effects of each country's political and economic policies on the whole of Europe. *View of the Progress of Political Economy in Europe* conveys the history of the ideas behind each influential government system, his enlightened view of the current climate in 1847, and how the previous doctrines shaped it.A graduate of the University College of Oxford, SIR TRAVERS TRISS(1809-1897) published several series of lectures on Law, Politics, and Economics during his tenure as an elected Fellow. He then went on to serve as a lawyer and judge in Lincoln's Inn, London; as a Queen's Council member; and eventually Queen's Advocate General, for which he was Knighted. Other noteworthy publications by Sir Travers Triss include The Law of Nations in Peace and The Law of Nations in War.

If we wish to remain true to the laws of logic and of the nature of things, we must set the economy of individuals against the economy of societies, and discriminate in respect to the latter between true political or national economy... and cosmopolitan economy, which originates in the assumption that all nations of the earth form but one society living in a perpetual state of peace.-from "Chapter 11: Political and Cosmopolitical Economy"One of the most prominent economic philosophers of the 19th century, on a par with-but espousing quite different thinking than-Karl Marx and Adam Smith explores, in the three-volume National System of Political Economy, a reasoned doctrine of national and pan-national management of trade, a global collaboration between government and business. Few figures are more crucial to understanding the upheavals of our contemporary era than Karl Polanyi. In a world riven by social and economic crises, from rising inequality to the decay of democratic institutions and profound technological disruption, Polanyi’s path-breaking account of the dynamics of market capitalism and his defence of society and nature against the dangerous tendencies of the market capitalist system are more relevant than ever. This book brings together Polanyi’s most important articles and essays to give a unique selection of his essential shorter writings, mixing classic texts with significant but previously little-known pieces. It highlights the coherence and richness of Polanyi’s theoretical and political approach, making it indispensable for understanding his overarching intellectual contribution. The volume includes his interwar writings, which deal with the world economic crisis and the socialist alternative to conservative and fascist developments; his reflection on political theory and the international situation after the war; and his comparative studies of economic institutions. Polanyi’s political writings are complemented and supported by the critique of economic determinism and what he termed ‘our obsolete market mentality’. This book is an invaluable companion to Polanyi’s masterpiece, The Great Transformation, and an essential resource for students and scholars of political economy, sociology, history and political philosophy.

Although not ignoring economic arguments, the analysis focuses on the arguably even more important political benefits and interests. The first chapter introduces EMU from a European perspective, as the next logical step to complete the Single Market and as a source of economic advantages for EU member states. However, it is also an important vehicle for the aim of political union. Hence, in view of Germany′s traditional position in Europe, the progress EMU represents in terms of achieving European unity is a significant factor that led to the unequivocal attitude of the Kohl government favour of EMU.The absolute necessity for Germany to advance the integration process was emphasised by German unification and the resulting political impossibility to refuse EMU as international support for a unified Germany was tied to stronger European integration. In addition, the common currency has benefits for Germany′s foreign trade reliant economy which seem to outweigh the economic doubts. Nevertheless, these concerns did play a role in defining political approaches and have influenced both the opposition′s stance and ...

And because Washington knows this, America?s greatest weapon?its propaganda machine?has been called into service, diverting attention away from the fact that it was and continues to be government interference in the market economy that?s lead us to where we are now, namely at the end of one financial calamity and the beginning of yet another. A plea for the market economy, The Global Debt Trap: How to Escape the Danger and Build a Fortune details the cause of our current economic crisis and argues that political mismanagement endangers finances, health and, in extreme cases, democracy itself. ? Andrea Sommariva The Political Economy of the Space Age. How Science and Technology Shape the Evolution of Human Society

This book provides answers to the questions of why human-kind should go into space, and on the relative roles of governments and markets in the evolution of the space economy. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to answer those questions. Science and technology define the boundaries of what is possible. The realization of the possible depends on economic, institutional, and political factors. The book thus draws from many different academic areas such as physical science, astronomy, astronautics, political science, economics, sociology, cultural studies, and history. In the literature, the space economy has been analyzed using different approaches from science and technology to the effects of public expenditures on economic growth and to medium term effects on productivity and growth. This book brings all these aspects together following the evolutionary theory of economic change. It studies processes that transform the economy through the interactions among diverse economic agents, governments, and the extra-systemic environment in which governments operate. Its historical part helps to better understand motivations and constraints - technical, political, and economical - that shaped the growth of the space economy. In the medium term, global issues - such as population changes, critical or limited natural resources, and environmental damages – and technological innovations are the main drivers for the evolution of the space economy beyond Earth orbit. In universities, th...

John Stuart Mill Principles of Political Economy - Volume 1

Can national growth be sustained indefinitely? How much should government intervene in a competitive market economy? The questions John Stuart Mill raised a century and a half ago, in 1848's Principles of Political Economy, and the answers he found, are just as critical-and just as contentiously debated-today.Through a lens of what the philosopher himself termed "philosophical radicalism"-and what some today call "democratic liberalism"-Mill takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and other influential works of political thought of his time, and recasts them from a more scientific viewpoint, suggesting that such realities as the unequal distribution of wealth were not "natural" but rather a matter of human choice... choices we continue to have to make in our ever more complicated economy. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Selected Writings of John Stuart Mill and On Liberty.English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) was one of the foremost figure of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century. Harold Keller Mortgaged Backed Securities

Inhaltsangabe:Summary: In order to ensure that the mortgage market remains buoyant, lenders require constant access to sufficient funds. Traditionally, mortgage lenders rely on retail deposits, mortgage covered bonds or dedicated savings to provide this source of funding. However, those providers who do not have the luxury of an established and reliable retail deposit base, or high credit rating necessary for cheap money market credit, are forced to think of alternatives. Securitization of originated mortgage loans can provide the answer. Financial institutions that originate loans are able to turn their loans into marketable securities through a process known as securitization. The originators of the loans are commonly referred to as the issuers of asset-backed securities (ABS). ABS constitute a relatively new but fast growing segment of the debt markets in Europe. The combination of a number of legal and economic factors has provided a favorable climate for securitization in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom (UK) and in its country of origin, the United States (US). In turn, these countries have experienced considerable growth in securitization volumes over the past years. In contrast, due to a weak economy and an unfavorable legal, tax and regulatory environment the German securitization market was not able to develop in much the same way. However, the German economy has started to recover in the current year and is forecasted to continue growing in 2007. This econo...

Though considered politically extreme by some, the series was wildly successful with readers, and went on to inform the later fiction of socially conscious authors including Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. It was, we see now, a banner moment in this history of Victorian literature, when politics began to inform fiction. Gender, Globalization, and Postsocialism

How are changing gender relations shaping and being shaped by post-socialist marketization and liberalization? Do new forms of economic and cultural globalization open spaces for women's empowerment and feminist politics? The rapid social transformationsexperienced by the people of the Czech Republic in the wake of the collapse of communism in 1989 afford political scientist Jacqui True with an opportunity to answer these questions by examining political and gendered identities in flux. She argues that the privatization of a formerly state economy and the adoption of consumer-oriented market practices were shaped by ideas and attitudes about gender roles. Though finely tuned to the particular, local traditions that have defined the boundaries of globalization for Czech men and women, also offers a provocative general thesis about the inextricable linkages between political and economic changes and gender identities.

Jean-Francois Thiriart, Alexander Jacob The Great Nation. Unitarian Europe - From Brest To Bucharest

Jean-François Thiriart (1922-92) was, without doubt, one of the most significant pioneers of the project of a united Europe that has been espoused by several contemporary European geopolitical thinkers such as, for example, Alain de Benoist, Robert Steuckers, Claudio Mutti and Aleksandr Dugin. Rather like the American political thinker, Francis Parker Yockey (1917-60) before him, Thiriart was one of the first to pivot his entire political project on the precondition of a liberation of Europe from the control of America, which he considered the principal enemy of Europe. And his two works on united, or Unitarian, Europe published in 1964 and 1965 are important manuals for all European national revolutionaries who wish to continue to fight for the independence of Europe - which remains to this day a vassal state of America.

Martineau's writings-often difficult to find in print and here presented in beautiful new editions-are essential reading for students of the 19th-century English novel.Volume I of Illustrations of Political Economy features the tales:• "Life in the Wilds"• "The Hill and the Valley"• "Brooke and Brooke Farm"Pioneering English writer and feminist HARRIET MARTINEAU (1802-1876) has been called the first female sociologist and the first female journalist in England. Stephan Hiller The Single European Market for Electricity

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Applied Sciences Hof, language: English, abstract: Energy is one of nowadays most frequently discussed issues. It becomes a more and more crucial factor for growth and competitiveness in Europe as well as worldwide. Dependable energy services at reasonable prices for business and household customers are essential elements for the economic and social development in the European Union (EU). In this context, a well-functioning Single European Market (SEM) is Europe's key to meet today's three main challenges in the energy sector: competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply. As a matter of fact, the way towards a SEM for energy is long and complex. A multitude of aspects play important roles. Outlining all of them would go far beyond the scope of this work. In consequence, this paper focuses on electricity only, leaving out the gas sector. Moreover, emphasis is put on the fundamental EU legislation and the development of the Regional Initiatives as a means to facilitate market integration. Topics of equal importance such as the technical requirements and prerequisites for the general market design had to be excluded from this composition.

Patrick Schrott Strategies of German Car Companies in China

In 2009, the PRC overtook the USA as the biggest automotive market in the world in production as well as in sales. With economic problems like stagnating real income, rising raw material prices and credit-driven consumerism in the industrial countries the importance of the Chinese market for car companies will even grow. Saturated passenger car markets in the USA and Western Europe and low rates of motorization in new automotive markets like China focus the attention of the market participants on these new, growing markets. The focus of this study is on the passenger vehicle market and lines out why the Chinese market is profitable and attractive for international manufacturers. Moreover, it shows how to deal with the problems and how to use the opportunities regarding the dimensions of internationalization.Firstly, the PEST-Analysis of the Chinese automobile market lines out the political-legal, economic, socio-cultural and technological factors. In such a rapidly changing and growing as well as culturally completely different country like the PRC, the framework conditions and circumstances are of big importance for foreign enterprises willing to do business there. The third chapter deals with possible internationalization strategies for China by showing possibilities of timing and market development strategies plus options for locating business markets. This is also further established in the fourth chapter, in which the internationalization strategies of two German enterpr...

Gideon Gono Zimbabwe's Casino Economy. Extraordinary Measures for Extraordinary Challenges

This is the remarkable first-hand account of the tenure of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, from December 2003 until November 2008. A close colleague of President Robert Mugabe, he explains why he cherishes that opportunity to serve him and his country. A number of beliefs underpin his account of his tenure: every nation seeks development in terms of economic growth, equity, social cohesion, political stability, democracy and human rights as well as sovereignty or national autonomy in international affairs, and his account is therefore in a development context, the object of public policy. He contends that Zimbabweans have been denied the pursuit of development which is in a precarious state, because of "illegal economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Britain and its allies who have sought regime change in the country and because of serious gaps and weaknesses in the policy response to the sanctions by both the government and the business community in our country". The result of political turmoil and market failure is that order and stability have been compromised and the Zimbabwe economy is now drive by a casino ethic, with devastating effects. He outlines the Reserve bank response to the challenges, and concludes by mapping a socio-economic roadmap for reform and recovery. After an introductory bio-professional note, the chapters cover: The Invisible Hand's Dirty Politics; The Market Economy as a Casino Economy; Corrupting Banking and the Stock Ex...

Captures the 17th-19th century origins and developments ofpolitical economy by editing original texts and illuminatingtheir relevance for today's political debate Political economy from the 17th century to the present can be captured in two narratives originating with Locke and Rousseau. Those original narratives were expanded in significant ways in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the editors argue that they still hold sway today. Edited original writings included in the anthology are from: Locke, Rousseau, Adam Smith, Tocqueville, Mill, Marx, Proudhon, Owen, the Federalist Papers, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, and the American Constitution. The editors have restricted their comments to the extensive introductions thereby allowing the original participants to speak for themselves. The readings included are intended to be instructive with respect to the origin and development of the two narratives rather than an exhaustive account of how thinkers and writers on economics advance the discipline of economics as a social science. Reviews «The editors provide a compelling collection to critically frame the clash of Political Economy which shapes modern democracies. Their selections and introductions expertly paint a picture of the contending schools to suggest how enduring these core challenges remain. By placing these writers within this great debate, the authors guide students to discover the essential questions of liberty, equality, and the proper role of the state at the core of the American economic debate.» —Roberta Q. Herzberg, Utah State University Political Science «The real service performed by Capaldi and Lloyd is to provide generous excerpts from supporters of both narratives so that the reader can determine for themselves who best makes their case. I recommend this volume highly both to the individual interested in learning about the intellectual and political history of political economy and to the professor in search of a one-volume anthology on political economy for use in a course on economic thought.» —Steven D. The purpose of this book is to examine major events and reforms which occurred in Chinese accounting within this transformation period and then to assess critically the impact of politics, the economy and culture on the development of Chinese accounting.

Afşar Emre The Turkish Political Economy After the 2000-2001 Financial Crises

Following the most severe financial crises since WW2, the Turkish economy demonstrated a stellar growth performance after 2001. The strong commitment to the fiscal discipline and to the powerful external anchors such as the IMF and EU were key to this success. The central question is what motivated the JDP government to show this long-lasting commitment to the fiscal discipline and the external anchors particularly to the IMF-induced economic programs. Growing ties with the global economy, the new institutional framework, the new balance of power within the networks shaping the Turkish political economy and the successful implementation of the JDP's prudent political economy agenda are the four plausible explanations for the central question. Each of these explanations is elaborated in a separate chapter and the growing ties with the global economy prevail as the most competent explanation since it directly contributes to the emerging of the other three explanations.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Cultural Studies - Basics and Definitions, grade: 2,0, University of Lüneburg (Applied Cultural Sciences), course: Seminar: An introduction to Culture and Economy, 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "Economists - on the arts? Isn't this a blasphemy? On the contrary: we believe that economists are able to contribute to a better understanding of many different aspects of both the visual and the performing arts."(Bruno Frey & Werner Pommerehne 1990:vii)Economy and art - for many decades these two fields were considered to be incompatible. But with the genesis of cultural economics the application of economic theories on art became generalizable. Among others Bruno Frey, a Swiss economist, devoted a great deal of his research work to explorer in what way an economic viewpoint and/or the market can be beneficial to art and what effects different instruments have on the arts and on society in general. The first part of this book is giving a short overview of the development and characteristics of Cultural Economy and introduces Bruno Frey's work. Afterwards Frey's argumentation considering the effects of the market on art is presented and contrasted with other authors in order to proceed to a general critique of the market. Concluding, the book opens up a global perspective, underlining the consequences of an economisation of the arts.

One of the most discussed approaches in thisfield of comparative analysis of political economy is the 'varieties of capitalism' theory1developed by Peter Hall and David Soskice. Their approach basically focuses on howdifferent actors may behave in a certain politico-economic state configuration and on howfar this configuration can determine a national type or variety of capitalism as well as theeconomic success of a political economy. This approach, though, has been designed with a view to the so-called 'developedeconomies', which are to be found in Western and Central Europe as well as in NorthAmerica. In the era of globalization other economies have come into play, with theirperformances ranging from real success stories, as in several Asian economies, toconsiderable failure, as in most marginalized Sub-Saharan African economies. After presenting Hall and Soskice's approach and some of its criticisms in order togive a conceptual framework, this paper will provide a very brief overview of the politicaleconomy of colonialism, f...
