The book explores the broad range of legal, personal, social, political and historical foundations of international law. The book is a collective effort of qualified authors- law school deans and professors, national and international court judges, young and old international law scholars and government lawyers from varying legal cultures across the oceans of the world, representing diverse legal philosophical and corresponding practices bringing their stories to life, telling tales helpful for those well-acquainted with the issues. Although one book of Liber Amicorum cannot address all the important issues in the vast arena of international law, these essays provide a rich and lucid understanding of issues of modern public international and comparative law. The beauty of the book lies in the fact that the issues discussed in the compendium by the diverse authors though familiar to comparatists, are given perspectives different from the usual Euro-American centrist standpoint that dominated the current writings in international law. The collected essays will be found most useful as an informative tool in the discovery of progressive development of international law as well as in the study of comparative legal systems." ***The legal essays contained in this treatise on various important issues of public international and comparative law are interesting, well researched, and written from multi-disciplinary perspectives by very well-qualified legal scholars from different ba...

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg (Politikwissenschaften), course: Democratization and Good Governance, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The UN Human Developing Report 2005 states that Kenya is one of the world's developing countries. The Human Developing Index published in this report specifies that Kenya has a low human development and thus its rank is 154 of 175 UN member states. This raises the question if the government of Kenya has implemented action to improve its development status and what sort of actions this has been. So, first, the status of development in a country must be assessed. After analyzing the data, concrete measures can be implemented. Berg-Schlosser describes in his abstract a bright range of indicators that exist for assessing development processes in a country. He points out that there is an urgent need for indicators which are used as benchmarks in international relations or for decisions for development by the IMF, World Bank and others. Generally, he emphasizes that the interpretation of the indicators must be done carefully. Often there are problems with the proper conceptualization and the operationalization of certain notions. Problems and limitations of such data analysis still remain. After a short introduction in chapter 2 about the important facts of Kenya, this essay tries to figure out in chapter...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Chair of International Poilitics), language: English, abstract: The prospects that global climate change will have adverse effects on human societies opened up a discourse about how adaptation should be managed. In order to finance adap-tation measures, the parties of the Kyoto Protocol recently established the Adaptation Fund in 2007. In view of the limited resources that are available for adaptation, scales for the prioritization of countries according to their suspected vulnerability have been developed in the literature. Indicators of vulnerability highlighted within this literature, only reflect the indicators of human development and therefore fail to capture the complex structures of vulnerability. The collective learning approach assumes that vulnerability can be significantly decreased when governance systems adapt to external changes through collective learning processes. The present thesis connects to this notion and therefore assesses the influence of collective learning processes on the vulnerability of the Bangladeshi and Pakistani society towards flood hazards. It does so in order to find a determinant of vulnerability that is able to capture its complexity. Following a case study comparison that is based on a systematic research on primary and secondary literature this study reconfirms that vulnerability can substantiall...

"Throughout the book, Parables of Milk and Might, the central theme presented is the inter-relationship between power and wealth and its influence on the political, economic, social and military development in the world. With power, wealth can be amassed and with wealth, power can be wielded. The transatlantic slave trade and colonialism which robbed Africa of her human and natural resources and brought wealth to the participating countries are classical examples of the demonstration of power and wealth, based on Darwin's theory of evolution, ¿the survival of the fittest¿. Countries with neither power, nor wealth can only be poor.In almost all the lectures I delivered on international development in universities, research centers and international organizations in Germany, I have always tried to sensitize people about the unfairness in the global economic system, which is causing poverty and underdevelopment in the world. It is a logical sequence, that after repeatedly treating problems of development in lectures and seminars for such a long time and always continuing to think over these in bed, new ideas will always be produced. With these ideas recurring in my mind, and in a satirical form, I had no other choice than to write this book in the form of parables. The vocabulary and names created in the original German version add humor to the facts presented in these parables. The main purpose for writing this book is to use it to sensitize many people, both in the indu...

The world is flailing in the face of successive threats to its peace and security. It is beleaguered by a set of recurring and intensifying crises. Terrorist networks, proliferation of nuclear weapons, climate change, religious intolerance and hatred, roving militias and insurgents, genocide, mass migration, organized crime, trafficking in women and children paralyze us. We are neither able nor willing to tackle these crises effectively and efficiently. We have lost confidence in our international institutions and national governments to respond adequately. What can we do?The world cries out for new thinking and creativity. Sovaida Ma'ani Ewing answers that effective, just and comprehensive collective security are within the world's grasp. Past efforts and innovative thinking have shown some promise but have been ineffective on their own. The author shows how they fit as isolated pieces within a larger jigsaw puzzle of a brighter collective future. By identifying and applying a set of clear foundational principles she suggests ways to improve past effort and move consciously and more effectively towards collective maturity. Building on these principles and applying them, she recommends concrete, practical and high impact recommendations for action by the international community to build a system of collective security that will ensure the peace of the world.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 4, Mount Kenya University (Department of Social Sciences), course: Master of Arts in International Relations & Diplomacy, language: English, abstract: International relations is a branch of political science that studies the relations between nations and their foreign policies. Like all scientific studies, international relations can be best understood by the aid of theories. The theorization of international relations emerged during the interwar period with liberalists calling for a collective security system to replace the balance of power policy which was being fronted by the realists. Since the turn of the 20th century when interstate relations intensified, it has always been hard to talk about international relations without making a reference to the three grand theories; realism, Marxism, and liberalism. This paper will therefore present and evaluate these three main theories. These theories have extensively been used by different scholars to explain and predict interstate behaviours in the international system. International relations theories are also described as a set of ideas that explain the nature of the international system while predicting the outcomes from actions by major players in international relations. These theories reflect what transpires in international relations and this implies that their concepts reflect what happens on...

The new millennium has seen an increasing demand to prepare the next generation to lead in the new global community. As a result, international learning opportunities have a more vital role in developing leaders for tomorrow. International education fosters cross-cultural understanding, leadership skills and a socially and globally conscious attitude. How can educators maximize these learning outcomes and support further skill development once the exchange or abroad program has ended? This study more closely examines the impact of international education on youth leadership development and youth engagement in community service. This action research was done to assist an international youth organization in developing sustainable community service programs to actively engage youth in social action. The findings and recommendations offer international education programs and youth organizations strategies and best practices to support youth leadership development through service learning, an approach to social action, to support and enhance intercultural learning experiences. Take a cutting edge look at the civic engagement of young people. Increasingly recognized as an important feature of democratic functioning in communities, it has also become clear that the civic domain is indispensable as a context for understanding human development processes. This volume proposes the following central theses in relation to youth civic development: It is rooted in the realities of young people’s everyday lives. It is collectively constructed. It raises questions about the principles, values, and relationships that bind people together in societies. It raises questions about power and justice. Youth civic development pushes the field to focus on the social issues with which younger generations are grappling and the identities they are constructing—issues that also are shaped by structural inequalities and by the collective actions of youth. The volume builds on themes of agency and assets from the field of positive youth development and points to ways that the critical analysis and engagement of young people in their society can contribute to social change. This is the 134th volume in this series. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in child and adolescent development. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts on that topic.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, , language: English, abstract: The global political system resulting from the end of the Cold War, which consecrated the implosion of the Soviet Union at the turn of the 1990s, remains marked with the American superpower. China, which has naturally always been a great nation in the international system, is on a steady and tremendous growth, a development process which is leading to a dramatic change in the global power distribution and the positioning of China as a potential contender of the U.S. the world affairs. While China needs to pursue its economic, security and political goals, it must also deal with the security dilemma induced by its emergence as a great power. This study discusses how China pursues its rise with the constraint of the American dominance of the international system. Essentially a theoretical undertaking, this thesis proposes an analysis of China's emergence from the assumptions of offensive realism developed by John J. Mearsheimer. It results from this analysis that China appears to follow a strategy that combines three complementary dimensions: on the internal level, economic and military reforms; and externally, an assertive and effective diplomacy in line with its strategic goals. Such an approach is innovative in the sense that it aims to raise the national and international profile of China through mainly economic power rather than military.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 1,0, LMU Munich (Geschwister Scholl Institute for Political Sciences), language: English, abstract: Against the backdrop of the renminbi issue, this paper retraces the unique trajectory of the international law (IL) on exchange rates - from the lawlessness of the gold standard to a highly regulated system under Bretton Woods and back to the obscure arrangement that has prevailed ever since the Second Amendment of the IMF's Articles of Agreement. By employing the concept of legalization, it argues that international monetary stability is a public good which, as a collective action problem, provides strong incentives for cooperation. However, the analysis of the IMF's bilateral surveillance regime reveals that after the Second Amendment hard legalization no longer served the interests of the IMF membership, while the costs of hard legal rules tipped the scale in favour of soft commitments. Specifically, the paper finds that exchange rates are subject to high uncertainty costs stemming from measurement difficulties, complexity, goal incongruence and subjectivity; as well as sover-eignty costs due to reputational damage, distributional impact and loss of monetary power.

In 'Competitiveness and Development', the author explains the confusion surrounding the concept of competitiveness in the context of developing countries; proposes policies for achieving competitiveness at a high level of development; examines its possibilities and constraints; and suggests policy changes necessary at the national and international levels. Shafaeddin illustrates how developed countries impose restrictive policies on developing countries through international financial institutions and the WTO, as well as regional and bilateral agreements, which limit their policy space for promoting dynamic comparative advantage in order to achieve competitiveness at a high level of development. Ultimately, such policies lock developing countries that are at early stages of development in specialization based on static comparative advantage and competitiveness at a low level of development.

It depicts how Donor Agencies at most times have neglected the poor's ideas and approaches to develop themselves. Corruption and mistrust between local communities and their governments is also exclusively exposed. Thoughts of the poor and how would they have loved development approaches to be designed is also exhibited. This book compared the Development Cooperation programmes of the three international Development Agencies i.e. German International Development Agency (GIZ), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Department for International development (DFID). The Geo-social political interests were also discovered as they differed to development of the poor, while even levels of participation were analysed and presented against each development agency. For the purposes of credibility, this research was examined by two most trusted Professors in Germany before it was submitted. It is a must read and reliable book for those interested in the role of the poor in determining their destiny.

Academic Paper from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, Aalborg University, language: English, abstract: This project aims to explore the mechanisms behind the solving of collective problems in integrated regions. One of the most successful cases of regional integration is the EU. For the past 60 years the process of integration has been developing in the EU towards a deeper integration of its members. The goal of this process is that - by acting as a unit - the EU can deal more effectively with the problems that require a regional approach. However, this is a slow process and it is still far from being fully accomplished. The integration process requires the willingness of the members to adjust their national law to the regional interest which in some areas has been hard to achieve. One of those areas is the EU Migration and Asylum policy that affects all the EU members and has been one of the most difficult matters to achieve an effective cooperation. Therefore this project explores these weaknesses by highlighting the lack of solidarity between the EU members and the uneven burden-sharing that contributes to an ineffective EU policy on this issue.

'Development and Semi-periphery' presents a collection of articles that focus on comparative analysis of development trajectories in the semi-peripheral countries of South America and Central Eastern Europe. As opposed to the transitology studies that were prevalent in the 1990s, and that treated the neoliberal context in these two regions separately, the articles in this book instead offer a new comparative analysis focusing on the consequences of neoliberal reforms and the new actors that deal with their results. The essays discuss the various forms of state that have unfolded in different peripheral countries, their role in the social engineering of economic models and social policies, and the impact of state capacities and ideas on institutional innovation. The volume also compares transformations in political culture, collective identities and contentious politics in both areas.

This dissertation's hypothesis argues that state-building and development are processes that, to function successfully, must be positioned in a complementary interrelationship. This argument has arisen in response to contemporary approaches to state-building and development that are too narrow, so that state-building strategies are often reduced to the establishment of political institutions to the exclusion of other equally necessary structures that include economic, social, and even cultural concerns; in the same sense, development strategies frequently focus on the support and establishment of selected economic structures at the exclusion of political, cultural, and social dimensions. Furthermore, a necessary prerequisite for long-term stability is a guarantee of individual and collective security, and the state requires, in its establishment and development, this aspect in all of its institutions. By taking as a case study the intervention of UNMIK and the EU in Kosovo, the author attempts to show how state-building and development processes are interrelated, and how they might best be applied in the field in order to achieve sustainable outcomes.State-building is defined as the building of state structures, which are role- and rule-oriented institutions within political, economic, social and cultural domains. Development is used in this work to identify the process responsible for making these structures sustainable over time. In the case of Kosovo, in addition to th...

The work examines the role of energy in foreign policy, the issue that has recently come to the centre of attention in international politics. The author argues that as a result of reinforced role of energy for development of world economy, scarcity of resources, intense competition among states for them, energy security, defined as assurance of the ability to access energy resources required for the continued development of national power, has started to occupy a particularly important place in foreign policy agenda of governments. Hence, a new international energy order has emerged as a result, where states can be characterized as energy-surplus and energy deficit nations. The thesis applies two main arguments to these two groups of states and researches energy as an inalienable component of national security and its impact on relative power of states in international relations. Following general investigation of the topic with application of various examples, the work goes on to discuss one single case and apply the presented arguments to the foreign policy of energy-rich Azerbaijan.

Power shifts happened several times throughout history, but they do not occur frequently and are often connected with the use of force. Presently, there is a power shift from the western industrialized states, e.g., from member states of the European Union (EU), to Asian states, in particular China. However, in spite of this growth, it is disputed to what extent the rise of these economies already transcended into power and how it will develop in the future. What is clear by now is that the recent global financial and economic crisis was the worst one in post World War II history. The crisis emerged in the United States and then spread to the EU and to other countries. It led to quickly rising public debt levels in western industrialized states.During this time, states like China or India extended their participation within global economic governance foras, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the G20. This raises the question of how the power of the European Union within these international institutions was affected by the crisis? The purpose of this publication is to research this question.Consequently, the examination is situated within the domain of the global financial and economic crisis, the shift of power and the power of the EU in international institutions. In order to give an answer to the above stated question, the power shift in international institutions during the time of crisis is to be assessed. The IMF and the G20 are analyzed in depth in order to...

What makes teamwork tick? Cooperation matters, in daily life and in complex applications. After all, many tasks need more than a single agent to be effectively performed. Therefore, teamwork rules! Teams are social groups of agents dedicated to the fulfilment of particular persistent tasks. In modern multiagent environments, heterogeneous teams often consist of autonomous software agents, various types of robots and human beings. Teamwork in Multi-agent Systems: A Formal Approach explains teamwork rules in terms of agents' attitudes and their complex interplay. It provides the first comprehensive logical theory, TeamLog, underpinning teamwork in dynamic environments. The authors justify design choices by showing TeamLog in action. The book guides the reader through a fascinating discussion of issues essential for teamwork to be successful: What is teamwork, and how can a logical view of it help in designing teams of agents? What is the role of agents' awareness in an uncertain, dynamic environment? How does collective intention constitute a team? How are plan-based collective commitments related to team action? How can one tune collective commitment to the team's organizational structure and its communication abilities? What are the methodological underpinnings for teamwork in a dynamic environment? How does a team and its attitudes adjust to changing circumstances? How do collective intentions and collective commitments arise through dialogue? What is the computational complexity of TeamLog? How can one make TeamLog efficient in applications? This book is an invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students in computer science and artificial intelligence as well as for developers of multi-agent systems. Students and researchers in organizational science, in particular those investigating teamwork, will also find this book insightful. Since the authors made an effort to introduce TeamLog as a conceptual model of teamwork, understanding most of the book requires solely a basic logical background.

(PMI). PMI was in its infancy in terms of „going international”. In other words, PMI had neither an organized and international marketing conception nor a regular business to foreign customers and markets so far. Aim and object of this project was analyzing marketing opportunities for their product portfolio within different international markets and to approach adequate marketing strategies. Therefore data of international markets must be collected, evaluated and analyzed to put these results in a strategic order. This thesis deals with the development of foreign markets and how market entry could be realized. It focuses on explaining ways how to get there. The aim of this thesis is to prove which strategies are possible and to explain them in a general approach. The market research and defining the appropriate strategies where focused on the company’s product portfolio. The products are digital imaging software and equipment and are placed in the segment for professional photographers, photographic entrepreneurs and retail outlets. The scope of duties in this thesis consisted in gathering data and compiling reports for international sales opportunities in so far unknown international markets. Peacebuilding as a sustainable process requires the intervention of different actors at the local, national and international levels and requires the cooperation between them to coordinate their roles in the post conflict situation. This paper also discusses specifically the role of NGOs as one of these important actors in the international community and the different actions that carried out by them that help in providing a healthy environment for sustaining peace and development at the same time. However, linking peace with aid by NGOs in most of the cases added more damage in the targeted post conflict countries instead of depleting it. Discussed within are the challenges that have been met by different NGOs at different levels when trying to incorporate peacebuilding into development and while intervening in the field.

In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois's 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes' Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops' articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted ...

Focus shall be on some wars and peace-making efforts solely planned and implemented without recourse to set international rules and respect for the protection of human rights and how it affects international relations. What are the impacts of such unilateral decisions? Some of these actions were adjudged either wrong or right especially when unilateralism was precipitated by the lack of consensus to reach negotiations or how unilateralism negatively affects other countries. From whatever position these actions are evaluated, it is a growing anomaly that could manifest dire consequences. What are the statistics of unilateralism in modern times? This thesis shall also examine how the international community responds to unilateralism in conflict resolution. How effective has the reactions of the United Nations towards unilateralism been to date? What are the causes, motivation and consequences of unilateralism? What happens when a government is overthrown? How is a new governing body developed? Finally, which rights of the people need to be preserved in the process of state building? Dr. Zakia Afrin's book Transitional Authority in Iraq: Legitimacy, Governance and Potential Contribution to the Progressive Development of International Law, addresses these issues in the case of post conflict Iraq's developing governing body. The analysis focuses on the composition, legal authority, and effectiveness of the transitional powers in Iraq. A key point of focus is the development of the people's rights during the new government's formation. However, this book balances its analysis by pointing out the degradation of many human rights in Iraq, especially women's rights. Dr. Afrin's analysis and conclusions are practically applicable to future instances of new governance development as well as meriting study by comparative legal scholars. The book includes a reprint of the Law of the Administration for the State of Iraq for theTransitional Period, 2004. It seeks to present the true position and elucidates attitudes that could be responsible for the observed attitudes. Innovations and dispositions are discussed in the light of the limited understanding of the principles enunciated in the Agenda 21 document which recommended prompt action from United Nations member states. The approach of the government and other stakeholders in Ondo State of Nigeria in embedding the principles of sustainable development into community development strategies was highlighted. This book therefore recommends the need for a focused directive from the Federal Government to the component state governments to commence implementation of LA21. The international community's efforts to support early childhood programmingin the developing world fall more broadly within the empowerment camp than other development sectors, and, through theirgreater-than-average integration of civil society institutions, local communities, and governments, may serve as a source of important lessonsabout "fishing expeditions" in development more generally. This case, in particular, speaks to the conflux of interests, priorities, anddreams that shape local initiatives for early childhood development, and examines the ways in which the supposed students of fishing may, sometimes, teach their instructors a thing or two.
