This book, which is a collection of the author’s papers presented at various conferences, is aimed at giving more people the opportunity of reading about her perception of the status of women and children education in Nigeria. The book covers the efforts of government and non-governmental organizations in Nigeria in educating women and children. It looks at the necessity of an education geared towards reorienting children in all aspects of our cultural values most especially functionalism, to ensure that education serves its purposes. Since education has been adopted by the Nigerian government as an instrument par excellence for national development, the author then suggests how best practices in women and children education could be achieved through proper monitoring of schools and by developing workable policies. Education should be for all round development – the head, the hand and the heart - therefore, more efforts should be geared towards technical and vocational education. To give more opportunities to indigent children, the Home Grown School Feeding and Health Programme is a necessity if the government is sincere at attaining the global Education For All (EFA) goals.

As education is of paramount importance to the overall development of any nation, it has found that the task of providing education to all who need it is an exceptional one. Since education costs money, many people in developing countries are unable to acquire quality education. In Ethiopia for example, the responsibility of providing education has for long been dominated by governments. In a situation where it has become very clear that government is unable to sustain continuous provision of adequate and high quality education, there can be no better option than to open the floodgate to private individuals and organizations in order to complement government efforts in education provision. The primary aim of this book is to identify the challenges that private higher education institutions (PHEIs) face to provide quality education. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods incorporating a case study approach. PHEIs from Ethiopia are used as a case study. This study finds that lack of clear quality standards, government incentives, skilled human capital, books, technology, fund, and other facilities are major factors that prevent PHEIs from proving quality education.

The evolution of policy in education has been very important in determining the direction and the rate of its spread in Nigeria. As one moves from one area or era to another, weak policy or lack of policy has created unforeseen problems that have had long-lasting consequences that color how much and what type of education was deemed suitable for a milieu. A lack of understanding of the role of policy has been responsible for many failed interventions in education. This book traces the evolution of policy and attempts to show the correlation between clearly articulated policies and the suitability of the output of the system to respond to the needs of the society.

This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, culturaland educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, forinstance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in manyparts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higherlevels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to thewidely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practicesin the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of differencein the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact thatmajority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the idealof inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislativeframework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of dis...

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

This work examines the subtle ways the church and traditional religion in southwestern Nigeria relate. It shows that contrary to earlier opinion that Christianity and Traditional Religion do not have areas of relatedness, the Christian Religion in Nigeria is a product of the people's culture and worldview. Certain elements used in African Traditional Religion in Christ Apostolic Church shows that Traditional Religion and Christianity especially in Southwestern Nigeria in Christ Apostolic Church have their meeting points and they engage meaningfully when properly used. The appropriation of some natural and synthetic elements in African Traditional Religion and the church shows that there is a link between the two. The concepts of spiritual manipulation and protection enhancement are evident in the two religions.

Over the years, theatre designers and artists in Nigeria have been dependent on imported colourants, despite the availability of local raw materials, which could be processed to obtain these colourants. This book discusses the possibility of exploring local alternatives by way of sourcing for colour-producing substances in parts of Nigeria, refining and putting them to use in stage scenery, costume and make-up. This study has ascertained that raw colour pigments are available in ample quantity in Nigeria, enough to sustain commercial colour production, and that the demand for colourants in Nigeria and the cost are high. This work should therefore be valuable to stakeholders in colour manufacturing, trade and usage - individuals, entrepreneurs, organizations and government who may wish to explore the opportunities in the colour-manufacturing sector for the sustenance and development of scenography and visual arts in Nigeria. Researchers studying artistic production materials, and those reviewing the social, economic and the cultural circumstances of art practice in Nigeria would find this work useful.

Sources of economic growth have variously been empirically analyzed. Traditionally, explanation of growth considered physical capital factors and then effective labour. In the past, much of the planning in Nigeria was centered on the accumulation of physical capital without recognition of the important role played, by human capital on rapid growth and development process. This informed the researcher to see how human capital accumulation affects growth in Nigeria. Answer was also sought to whether (or not) the level of education attainment significantly determine rate of economic growth. A number of estimation procedures were carried out. The data series were tested for stationarity using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test as the starting point to assess the order of integration with the aid of econometric views (E-view version 3.1) and two multiple regression models were estimated using ordinary least square method. Based on the findings of this study, physical capital, labour force and human capital were significant factors determine growth in Nigeria over time.

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

The Politics of Biafra is a reflection on the importance of history in addressing present realities and the future co-existence of Nigeria's multi ethnic society. It analyzes the ideological struggles and conflict in Biafra during the war with Nigeria from 1967-1970, the impact of the war and the relevance of those struggles to the current agitations for a new state of Biafra. In this historical and analytical work, the author observes that nearly fifty years after the end of the Nigeria-Biafra war in 1970, Nigeria remains confronted with the Biafra dilemma. No matter its pretensions, Nigeria will at some point have to reform its present pseudo federal arrangement to create a more inclusive, equitable and proper federal structure. If not, the country will continue to face epileptic developmental thrusts, militancy in the Niger Delta and a ruinous intensifying clamor for self-determination by disadvantaged ethnic groups, especially the Igbo.Appendix - Three part essay by Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

The Food Security (FS) status of most households in Nigeria has worsened, especially due to inadequate economic access to food, most especially in the rural areas. However, most studies in Nigeria have focused on either households' food demand or FS without establishing the linkage. Therefore, nexus between households' FS and food demand in Nigeria was investigated. Cross-sectional data from National Living Standard Survey (NLSS) for 2004 by National Bureau of Statistics were utilized. A total of 18,861 rural and urban households were used for the analysis. Variables used were households' socioeconomic characteristics, prices, quantity purchased and expenditure on Food. Data were analysed by sectors using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke and sequential probit regression models. Low Food Demand Food Insecure Group (LFDFIG) was 42.6% in RA, while High Food Demand Food Secure Group (HFDFSG) was 44.1% in UA. Food insecurity was found to be higher in the RA with majority entrapped in LFDFINSG. Crime is the most worrisome social problem in contemporary Nigeria. Every Nigerian and indeed every foreigner is a potential victim of crime. The recent bombing and killings of Nigerians and foreigners at the United Nations Office in the country is a typical case in point. It is obvious that the unprecedented increase in the number of violent crimes in the country such as kidnapping, armed robbery and terrorism has resulted in a corresponding increase in the number of victims. It is regrettable and in fact very unfortunate that in spite of this deplorable situation, the needs of such victims have no provision in the country's criminal code. This is happening at a time when most modern nations have recognized the need to accommodate the needs of crime victims in their criminal codes. This pathetic situation is the major worry of this book.

Although, local production of rice has been on the increase, it has not been able to meet the demand of households in Nigeria leading to the dependence of the nation on rice importation to meet local demand which constitutes loss of foreign exchange earnings. The continuous importation of foreign rice in Nigeria has brought about changes in households consumption preference for foreign and local rice brands. The subject matter of consumption preference for foreign and locally produced rice as well as the factors that influence households consumption preference for foreign rice over locally produced rice have not been properly addressed. This book provides the much needed empirical information on rice consumption preference in Nigeria for the purpose of making well concerted policies to enhance consumer preference for locally produced rice, stimulate increase in local rice production and save the nation from the continuous loss of foreign exchange incurred in rice importation.

After the Collapse of Public Schools is the fourth in a series of books Richard Neal has written on the subject of freedom of choice in education. It is the culmination of many years of research and experience and covers topics not included in the author's previous books. The key lessons revealed in this book are: The government's interest in education can be satisfied while simultaneously allowing maximum freedom of choice for all families.Without certain essential prerequisites in place, there can be no true freedom of choice. There are powerful lobbies in The Education Establishment that willfully resist change. To them, freedom is the enemy. Many obstacles are in the way of freedom of choice, most of which are contrived to perpetuate the status quo.Striking differences exist between "education" in government schools and meaningful learning under freedom of choiceTrue freedom in education unleashes a bounty of new learning opportunities not possible in government schools. The dominance of the government monopoly in education is coming to an end as competition is allowed to flourish.Technology is becoming an unstoppable force in releasing students from compulsory attendance (incarceration?) in government schools.Revealed in this book are the fundamental guiding principles for effective learning, most of which are not possible in public schools. This book provides a unique forecast of what education will be like After the Collapse of Public Schools.
