Solar active regions (ARs) are three-dimensional magnetic structures extending from deep sub-photosphere to coronal heights. These ARs are responsible for producing most of the energetic transients, such as flares and CMEs. Energetic transients are expected to excite p-mode oscillations in ARs by imparting mechanical impulse associated with their thermal expansion on the photosphere. Flare productive ARs may have distinctly different sub-photospheric properties compared to dormant ARs. We have determined the characteristic properties of local oscillation modes by applying the local helioseismic technique to several ARs. Strong evidence of substantial increase in mode amplitude are found from comparison of the pre- to the post-flare phases of energetic flares. Our study has revealed strongly twisted, sheared flows in the interior of flaring ARs having complex magnetic fields. We discovered steep gradients in meridional velocity at depths ranging from 1.5 to 5 Mm in flare productive ARs. Our study of sub-photospheric flows and photospheric magnetic fields of several ARs showed that the sub-photospheric kinetic helicity and photospheric magnetic helicity are weakly correlated.

The study of sub-sea gas pipeline leaks plume behavior is very vital from the risk assessment point of view. In the recent years some research works are done in UK and Norway to study the sub-sea gas leaks plume behaviour for North Sea conditions. However as of now no such research work is carried out in India for Arabian Sea Conditions. This paper analyses various sub-sea gas discharge models used in North Sea i.e. Empirical model, Integral model and CFD model. The empirical models assume that the plume radius is proportional to the release depth or correlations that have been produced to fit the available experimental data. Integral models are based on local similarity i.e. the radial profiles of velocity and density defect are assumed to have a similar form at different heights within the plume. The plume properties can be represented, using for example Gaussian profiles, by their plume centreline values. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or field codes solve the Navier Stokes equation. The study indicates that the plume radius and centreline velocity are directly influenced by ocean depth. The salinity and temperature do not have notable effect on the plume behaviour.

In a traditional society like Ethiopia, where system of governance is highly dependent on the nature of land tenure, historians and other researchers gave priority to the study. Many scholars in the field assumed various general theoretical and conceptual frameworks to analyze the existing tenurial structures. However, many times it fell to represent the historical facts at local levels. In this regard, my study is one of its kinds that show the peculiar features of land tenure in Qajjima sub-district of Ada’a, Ethiopia. It discusses the evolution of the tenure and the sociopolitical and economic structures from 1880s to 1991 in relation to the superstructure. Furthermore, it incorporates the study of emergence and development of the capital of the sub-district, Dukäm Town, concomitant with the influence of the political economy of the Imperial and Därg regimes.

For a better understanding of the historical background an overview over the military regimes in point 2 of the term paper is inevitable. After that in point 3 - the main part of the paper - a comparative analysis is carried out whereby at first the theoretical framework is pointed out before it comes to the actual comparison. My analysis focuses on the military regimes that were evoked by coups d'état in both countries. With limitations to space I only draw attention to the last military regimes in both countries, meaning the junta in Greece from 1967-74 and in Turkey from 1980-83. Those timeframes are to be compared in this term paper. In the following part 4 I will also draw my attention to the role of the military in Greece and Turkey today, how the perception of the military changed and the role it is taking in the current society with regard to its power and influence. This will lead to a final estimation in the last part of the term paper.

Watershed prioritization is the ranking of different critical sub watersheds according to the order in which they have to be taken up for the treatment by soil and water conservation measures. A particular sub watershed may get top priority due to various reasons but often the intensity of land degradation is taken as the basis. In the absence of sediment yield data or ungauged watershed situations, geomorphologic parameters along with the satellite - based land use / land cover information of watershed may be helpful in prioritization of the sub watersheds. Quantitative geomorphologic analysis of a drainage basin is considered to be the most satisfactory method because it enables us to understand the relationship among different aspects of the drainage pattern of the basin and to make a comprehensive evaluation of different drainage basins developed in various geologic and climatic regimes. The latest advances in remote sensing technology have provided very useful methods of surveying, identifying, classifying and monitoring several forms of earth resources. In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.

This book presents one of the latest measurements (2012 May) of the neutrino velocity performed with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam. This analysis is different from the previous ones for two main factors. From the CERN side, it uses a dedicated bunched beam instead of the standard high intensity OPERA beam, which allows a better time distribution of the events; while at the LNGS the analysis has been performed using a a dedicated time measurement based on the RPC sub-detector, which is partially independent from the standard OPERA timing system. The obtained result is the one with the smallest statistical uncertainty with respect to the other LNGS experiments and to the OPERA standard analysis. The book starts with an introduction to neutrino physiscs and OPERA experiment. Then, all the measurement details will be explained in order to end up, in the fifth chapter, to the data analysis. As in all the other LNGS experiments, the results consists in the measurement the neutrino Time of Flight with respect to the light Time of Flight. Using the CNGS spectrum the result is then expressed in term of a mass limit on the neutrino.

An inversion method based on rejection sampling is developed, with the objective of obtaining posterior distributions of the P-wave velocity, S-wave velocity and density. The inversion algorithm is based on the exact expression of the reflection coefficient from the Zoeppritz equation. The results of inverting directly on the reflection coefficient is compared with inversion algorithms based on the two- and three term Taylor approximation to the Zoeppritz equation, allowing larger contrasts across the reflecting interface. At first, the inversions are compared for a broad limited prior model and subsequently different constraints are applied for a better resolution of the posterior distribution of the P-wave velocity, S-wave velocity and density, including acoustic- and shear impedance and Poisson’s ratio. The inversions are tested for a subsurface three layer model, assuming ideal conditions. Reference values of the P-wave velocity, S-wave velocity and density is interpreted from well logs in the NINI oil field of the North Sea.

The objective is first to present the importance of measuring the acoustic velocity, especially when the acoustic equations are nonlinear as well as characterizing the near fields. However, these applications need to use non-invasive sensors. Some optical techniques, initially developed for fluid mechanics, have been adapted to the field of acoustics in recent years. This book summarizes 15 years of research in this area, highlighting the improvements that have been made, particularly in signal processing, and showing applications for which they have proven to be a carrier of innovation.

I tease out the gender-based differences in the Gaza City citizens’ dialect at the phonological, lexical, morphological and discourse levels to explore its linguistic structure. The Palestinian Arabic variety is the regional dialect of the Arabic language spoken by Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Arabs of Israel and those in diaspora - Palestinians abroad in Lebanon, Jordan and other countries. There are many sub-dialects of the Palestinian Arabic variety; almost every city, town and village has its own sub-dialect. The Gaza City citizens’ dialect refers to the speech of the non-refugee citizens settled in Gaza City, who are not refugees from other parts of Palestine. In addition, there is a Hebron sub-dialect and a Ramallah sub-dialect. All sub-dialects are mutually intelligible, however, these sub-dialects exhibit a number of linguistic differences at all levels of the grammar.

Linear accelerators are used in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments performed in leading laboratories around the world like Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY). In order to decrease costs some of them, such as the X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) located at DESY research centre, are built in a single tunnel. Therefore, part of the accelerator's control electronics is located next to the main beam pipe and exposed to destructive influence of gamma and neutron radiation. These kinds of radiation are produced as parasitic effects of normal operation of the linear accelerator. Knowledge of the radiation doses absorbed by electronics and dose rate production may help to estimate the lifetime of the control systems, to schedule replacement of the electronic devices and to detect incorrect work of the accelerator. The book describes a development version of the Distributed Radiation Monitoring System capable of measuring neutron and gamma doses in several dozen points of the accelerator tunnel. It also looks into issues connected with radiation influence on electronics, radiation dosimetry and communication interfaces in HEP.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 65, University of Leeds, course: International Studies, 58 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the strategies the New Order and UMNO regimes in Indonesia and Malaysia adopted to deal with Islam from 1965 to 1998. During these three decades, the two regimes were similar in viewing Islam as a big challenge. However, the strategies they employed to deal with it were different. President Suharto followed a two-pronged strategy of promoting cultural Islam and at the same time, emasculating political Islam. Meanwhile, the UMNO leadership embarked on their comprehensive Islamization project. As a result, Islam as a social and cultural force grew tremendously in Indonesia and Malaysia. Yet in national politics, Suharto pushed Islam from center to periphery, then since mid-1980s he courted Islam and pulled it out of the periphery again. In Malaysia, the Islamization race between UMNO and PAS moved Islam from the fringe to the center of mainstream politics. The work concludes that Islam was systematically manipulated by both regimes in the period of 1965-1998, and the two strategies led to the emergence of two different models of Islamization in two countries: a "think-tank" focused project in Malaysia and a bottom-up process in Indonesia.

The present work analyzes the rise and growth of Communalism in India and Sangh Parivar. The book also points out the differences between the Image of Lord Ram in Hinduism and the image of violent Ram projected by Sangh Parivar during late 80s and 90s. The book focuses on the history of communal riots, projection of Violent Ram by Sangh Parivar and the Ramjanam Bhumi-Babri Mosque controversy. The book contends that it was the Sangh Parivar, who, to gain political mileage by mobilizing Hindus on communal grounds, projected the Violent image of Ram, asking their fellow religionist to be violent to end the evil (i.e Muslims). The Sangh Parivar utilized the communal riots and growing hatred among Hindus against Muslims and the Shah Bano movement. They used religion and religious symbols to mobilize Hindus to successfully spread the ideology of communalism and projected the image of violent Ram. Thus the Babri Mosque was demolished in 1992 and since than the issue is a bone of contention between Hindus and Muslims in India.

For these travel-times obtained the velocity distribution in the mantle and core are in good agreement with the observed data. Velocity curve for the Earth's core is well explained by the nature of the so-called "precursors" - vibrations that go in the first entry on the surface of the Earth at epicentral distances of 134o - 142o. We obtain the distribution of the density and elastic parameters for the Earth and the Earth's core viscosity. According to data obtained in the 70's under the "Apollo", performed an override of the velocity distribution in the mantle of the Moon. Determined distribution of the density and elastic parameters in the interior of the moon. Gives estimates of the core radius of the moon for different chemical composition. The book analyses the security measures in the maritime transport sector and the implications for implementing import/export control regimes for chemicals under international conventions. The initial chapter draws upon political science to explain a theory of how institutions and organizations respond to crises. The next chapter explains in detail how the import and export controls of the four principal international regimes monitor and affect the chemical industry and its transport system. The third chapter describes the current self-regulations of the chemical industry itself and comments on likely changes in the industry. This chapter also suggests some new approaches whereby chemicals should themselves be considered as an element of national security. The fourth chapter describes in detail the responses to the potential for terrorists to use chemical cargo in the maritime transport sector as a weapon of mass destruction and the main security regulations in non-proliferation implemented. The final chapter examines the potential for international cooperation particularly between governments and the import/export controls regimes organizations and how these can be enhanced.

The air flow to the lungs is disturbed by a partial or complete collapse of the upper airways of patients suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Numerical simulations on patient specific models may be used to extract pathophysiological parameters like flow velocity and pressure distribution in the human pharynx and can evaluate the severity of the disease and the success of a therapy. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics are used to simulate the air flow in the natural pharyngeal geometry of a patient as well as in the deformed pharyngeal geometry of the same patient treated with a dental appliance. The simulations are performed with two different types of boundary conditions. It is found that a realistic choice of a pressure drop boundary condition shows a significant change in the pressure distribution for the different geometries. In using an inflow velocity as boundary condition a change in the dimensionless Reynolds number based on the flow velocity can be observed. However, a comparison of two different turbulence models showed no significant differences in the flow predictions.

Alemayehu Mengesha Cherkos MHD wave propagation in a relativistic and uniformly drifting plasma

3944 руб.
In this work a set of relativistic MHD equations is used to describe waves in an ideal plasma drifting uniformly along the magnetic field with respect to a laboratory stationary coordinate system. The basic equations of interest are derived from the relativistic Vlasov equation in the Minkowski space. Then the corresponding dispersion relation is found. This dispersion relation gives several earlier results when it is analyzed and reduced to various limits. An important result is that an arbitrary value of a drift velocity introduces asymmetry in propagation when the wave normal is along the direction of the magnetic field, but when it is perpendicular to direction of the magnetic field, symmetry is not disturbed. Another important finding of this thesis is that in the special case when the drift velocity is absent and the wave is along the magnetic field, all the three modes are found to propagate with two of them being identical with the Alfv`en speed, while the third mode propagates with the sound speed. Moreover, in the absence of the magnetic field the drift velocity causes instability.

Inflation targeting is a monetary policy framework that attracted many countries in the 1990s as a result of the disappointing performance under other regimes, mainly exchange rates targeting or monetary aggregate targeting. Due to its success in many developed and developing countries, the Central Bank of Egypt announced its intention to introduce inflation targeting regime to anchor its monetary policy when the basic prerequisites are satisfied. The book outlines the theoretical justification behind choosing inflation targeting and discusses its advantages and disadvantages, as well as compares it with other monetary regimes. The core of the book is to investigate the applicability of inflation targeting regime in Egypt by examining the extent to which the conditions of that regime are met.

The main concern with jumps on rough beds is that due to the high upstream flow velocity, the place where the jump occurs must have resistance to scouring and cavitation; otherwise, the stilling basin may be destroyed. The bed surface of the stilling basin must be smooth, or the crests of the corrugations should be at the level of the upstream bed that carries the supercritical flow; this prevents cavitation in the basin. If jumps were formed on corrugated beds, significant reductions occur in the tailwater depth and length of the jumps. The Reynolds shear stresses are produced in the plane of the crests of the corrugations that reduce the velocity field above the corrugations.

This book is concerned with food production and security in Sub Saharan Africa. It seeks to highlight the importance of urban food systems, women and micro-livestock farming, and how these can be instrumental in ensuring food security. There is an attempt to suggest that understanding of climate change variables and their impacts on agricultural production is a prerequisite for defining appropriate agricultural adaptive responses to increase food production. The book acknowledges that meeting food demand due to increasing human population in Sub Saharan Africa has been a challenge. Suggest improved productive resources supply side will translate into adequate food production. If food production is improved Sub Saharan Africa will not continue to worry that human population growth will out pace the ability to meet the predicted food demand.

In this work an efficient thus computationally low cost FEM modeling technique of both low velocity impacts and Lamb waves propagation events, involving Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWAS), is presented. In Chapter 1 both the excitation and sensing of Lamb waves are investigated. The PWAS modeling techniques gave excellent results, as clear from the comparisons with the experimental curves. The great advantage of this modeling is represented by the low computational cost. In Chapter 2 the outputs from PWAS, during low velocity impact events, are investigated. The experimental curves registered during impacts on both aluminum and composite plates were compared with the FEM ones, obtained by considering only geometrical variables of the sensors. In Chapter 3 a test case for damage detection in thin plates with Lamb waves is presented, thus proving the advantage of the PWAS modeling technique for SHM purposes. The substantial improvement of a fast FEM solution is the possibility to directly visualize and study the interaction of Lamb waves with the various kinds of defects/damage eventually present in thin structures such as holes, cracks, delaminations, debondings, etc.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 7, University of Groningen (Faculteit Letteren), course: Faculty of Arts, language: English, abstract: The research question of this paper, first of all, necessitates an outline of the main tenets of the dependency theory. Thus, the first sub-question will be: How does the dependency theory account for the underdevelopment in the South? The second research question provides a closer examination of the composition, the details and the evolution of trade policy between the EU and developing countries. Therefore, the second chapter will address the sub-question: How has trade policy and development cooperation of the EU with the developing country manifested itself, and what are the circumstances under which the trade regimes of the EC towards developing countries have come into existence?Based on a better understanding of EU trade policy, the effect of EU trade on developing countries will subsequently be analyzed. The question that underlies the third chapter is: Have the trade policies of the EU contributed to the external constraints which hamper the development of developing countries?

Diabetes Mellitus is an endocrinal disorder known for its neurological complications, frequently involving peripheral, somatic and autonomic nervous system. The correlation in auditory neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy in relation to diabetes has received much less attention. The advent of neurophysiological techniques has enhanced the understanding of normal auditory function and conduction velocity of the peripheral nerve and the possible effects that diabetes may exert on them. Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) and Nerve conduction velocity studies (NCVS) are the neurophysiological tests that assess the functional integrity of the auditory pathway and the conduction velocity of the peripheral nerves and provide a non-invasive and objective method of investigation. Diabetes mellitus causes both the auditory neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy. There exist conflicting data from the past, regarding the relationship of the auditory neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy in the hyperglycemic subjects with the glycemic control and duration of the disease.

In this study, the problem of optimal resource allocation in real-time systems is studied. A recently proposed resource allocation approach called Q-RAM (Quality of Service based Resource Allocation Model) is investigated in detail. The goal of the Q-RAM based approaches is to minimize the execution speed in real-time systems while meeting resource constraints and maximizing total utility. Phased array radar system is an example of a system. In this system, multiple targets are tracked by the radar system simultaneously requiring processor and energy resources of the radar system. In the present study, first, the Q-RAM solution approach to the radar resource allocation problem with single resource type is extended to give a global optimal solution in all possible termination cases. For the case of multiple resource types, the Q-RAM approach can only generate near-optimal results. In this study, for the formulated radar resource allocation problem with multiple resource types, the Methods of Feasible Directions are considered as an alternative solution approach.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Electrotechnology, University of Peshawar (University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan), course: High Voltage Direct Current, language: English, abstract: Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has become the most concerned converter topology in the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system, in recent times. The low switching frequency, low converter losses and flexible control made it most attractive topology. It is important to make a research on the loss calculation method of MMC and state formulae for the losses as it is a vital step during the design stage of the MMC based HVDC system. In this research work, the structure of MMC based HVDC system is discussed. Three sub module topologies'; half bridge, full bridge and clamp double sub module, are discussed. A method based on the average and root mean square (RMS) values of the current passing through the sub module is discussed. The conversion losses in the switching devices of the sub modules are calculated using the method. A cases study is taken into consideration then with certain parameters. Using these parameters a MATLAB program is developed. With the help of the program the losses and efficiency curves for each switching device by taking each sub module separately are obtained respectively. A comparison of the losses and efficiency of each sub module is also discussed. At the end those factors which effect the losses and efficienc...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 1,6, VU University Amsterdam , course: Entrepreneurship, language: English, abstract: Accelerator programs are a new phenomenon within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, helping start-ups to develop and launch new business models. So far most accelerators focus their whole attention on the development of their program, without taking future activities into account. Only a few authors like Miller & Bound (2011) and Christiansen (2009) have researched this nascent field, illustrating the main characteristics and supporting factors during the program. So far, no relevant research has been conducted within the field of alumni networks, especially the main needs of alumni start-ups. With our thesis we want to fill this gap and research the key supporting factors of how to build an alumni network for accelerator programs. With our research we generated new insights into the field of accelerator programs, especially elaborating the most essential supporting factors to build an alumni network. These findings serve as a starting point for future research, showing the needs of alumni start-ups and areas of improvement. Our research shows a strong focus on American and Dutch accelerator programs, which is rooted in the personal linkage of the authors within this field. Therefore we suggest testing our findings in other regional areas such as Africa, Asia and Russia in orde...
