Standing on the threshold of the 21st century when thewhole world is experiencing cataclysmic change in the sphere of political transformation, economicglobalization, technological innovation, media revolution and rapid growth of the nation states- it isnow quite exigent to rearrange or reorganize the state machinery for coexisting with the changedworld order. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: EP, , course: Doctor of Philosophy, language: English, abstract: The present paper investigates the effect of Western religion on governance, policies, and politics, within both the domestic and the global contexts. This question, however, leads into the need for deep ideological analysis. The paper thus defines the concept of Western religion, and then proceeds to show how Western religion is inseparable from Western civilization, including modern values which are often called secular but which, in fact, have ideological roots that can be traced to Western religion. Over the course of this analysis, an opposition emerges between Western religion on the one hand and secular progressivism on the other-the latter of which is both derived from and antagonistic toward Western religion. The contours of this ideological conflict and their implications are explored through the development of a comprehensive theoretical framework. The independent research of the present paper consists of an interview with a selected congressman. The interview seeks to delve into the congressman's views regarding Western religion and its effects on governance, policies, and politics. This data is analyzed using a qualitative method. Finally, the present paper analyzes and discusses the statements of the congressman in the interview in light of the p...

"Oklahoma Politics might well be the best general history of a Western state."Western Historical Quarterly"Thoroughly researched and well written, this book is a solid study of the evolution of Oklahoma's political system."Southwestern Historical QuarterlyOklahoma Politics offers a thorough and accurate history of the state's government. Beginning with the elections of the territorial era, the authors progress through the early 1980s, covering every major election in the state's history and including biographical sketches of promintent political figures, discussion of controversies in the statehouse, and explanation of the state's role in national affairs.Although comprehensive in scope, Oklahoma Politics is more than a compendium of political data. The authors examine the history of the commonwealth as something of a model for understanding the evolution of state politics in general during the twentieth century. Born during the Progressive Era, the state has been host to nearly every major force in American state politics since: grassroots agrarian radicalism, a potent Ku Klux Klan, the turmoil of the Great Depression, the post-World War II revolution in the federal-state relationship, and the emergence of modern Republican conservatism, all making Oklahoma a laboratory of political change.Incorporating many findings of political scientists, the authors develop a new perspective from which to view Oklahoma's political history, but without ...

Allegations of Russian conspiracies meddling in the affairs of Western countries have been a persistent feature of Western politics since the Cold War – allegations of Russian interference in the US presidential election are only the most recent in a long series of conspiracy allegations that mark the history of the twentieth century. But Russian politics is rife with conspiracies about the West too. Everything bad that happens in Russia is traced back by some to an anti-Russian plot that is hatched in the West. Even the collapse of the Soviet Union – this crucial turning point in world politics that left the USA as the only remaining superpower – was, according to some Russian conspiracy theorists, planned and executed by Russia’s enemies in the West. This book is the first-ever study of Russian conspiracy theories in the post-Soviet period. It examines why these conspiracy theories have emerged and gained currency in Russia and what role intellectuals have played in this process. The book shows how, in the new millennium, the image of the ‘dangerous, conspiring West’ provides national unity and has helped legitimize Russia’s rapid turn to authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin.

Recent attention on the role of men in reproductive health warranted the need for becoming of responsible partners in relation to male-involvement initiatives. This study examined the role of men on some selected reproductive health issues. Logistic regression analysis suggests that approval of husband could be an important determinant whether or not a couple would use contraception. Qualitative analysis revealed that a complex web of socio-cultural factors impeded spousal communication regarding the reproductive health issues and discouraged them to take their wives to health facilities. The analysis demonstrates that male involvement in reproductive health is an important strategy to the reach demographic goals in Bangladesh. Men in Bangladesh suffer from misinformation and require factual information from relevant sources to promote and ensure men's participation in reproductive health services. The findings suggest that more pragmatic and target-oriented programmes are required to increase male involvement in reproductive health matters; this will hasten to achieve the demographic objectives of the country.

Dairy is the most important sector of livestock industry in Bangladesh that provides greater part of animal source protein for human consumption. Lifetime productivity of cows largely depends on their individual reproductive performance. In most countries, the primary objective of a reproductive control program in a dairy herd is to have each cow calve and produce a live calf in every 12 months. Like in many other countries, poor reproductive efficiency has been considered to be the major limiting factors in medium and large scale market oriented dairying in Bangladesh for achieving this goal. This book highlighted the overall reproductive efficiency in main milk pocket area of Bangladesh combining both traditional and recent measures of reproductive indexes.

Dale F. Eickelman, James Piscatori Muslim Politics

In this updated paperback edition, Dale Eickelman and James Piscatori explore how the politics of Islam play out in the lives of Muslims throughout the world. They discuss how recent events such as September 11 and the 2003 war in Iraq have contributed to reshaping the political and religious landscape of Muslim-majority countries and Muslim communities elsewhere. As they examine the role of women in public life and Islamic perspectives on modernization and free speech, the authors probe the diversity of the contemporary Islamic experience, suggesting general trends and challenging popular Western notions of Islam as a monolithic movement. In so doing, they clarify concepts such as tradition, authority, ethnicity, pro-test, and symbolic space, notions that are crucial to an in-depth understanding of ongoing political events. This book poses questions about ideological politics in a variety of transnational and regional settings throughout the Muslim world. Europe and North America, for example, have become active Muslim centers, profoundly influencing trends in the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia. The authors examine the long-term cultural and political implications of this transnational shift as an emerging generation of Muslims, often the products of secular schooling, begin to reshape politics and society--sometimes in defiance of state authorities. Scholars, mothers, government leaders, and musicians are a few of the protagonists who, invok...

Relatively a huge number of populations who came from different parts of India mainly from Bihar after the partition of the sub-continent (Ahmed, 2003) in 1947 and settled in Bangladesh and opposed the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 are known as Bihari, a stateless community, artificial minority or stranded Pakistanis. The Bihari community in Bangladesh is deprived of all rights. They are subject to deprivation. They could hardly manage jobs for themselves, which reflected their economic insecurity and food insecurity as well. Inadequate medical facilities in the camps indicated their insecurity of health, thereby becoming vulnerable to various diseases and poor health with debilitating illness. Absence of ownership of land is a violation of human rights. Personal security gets hampered due to identity crisis of the Bihari people because they are not considered citizens of Bangladesh .as well as they do not have any political rights (though court declared their voting right in 2008) to participate in party politics by which they could protect themselves from violation of human rights and other forms of criminal activities. They were excluded from mainstream society.

Daniel Kemmis Community and the Politics of Place

Thomas Jefferson envisioned a nation of citizens deeply involved in public life. Today Americans are lamenting the erosion of his ideal. What happened in the intervening centuries? Daniel Kemmis argues that our loss of capacity for public life (which impedes our ability to resolve crucial issues) parallels our loss of a sense of place. A renewed sense of inhabitation, he maintains -of community rooted in place and of people dwelling in that place in a practiced way-can shape politics into a more cooperative and more humanly satisfying enterprise, producing better people, better communities, and better places. The author emphasizes the importance of place by analyzing problems and possibilities of public life in a particular place- those northern states whose settlement marked the end of the old frontier. National efforts to "keep citizens apart" by encouraging them to develop open country and rely upon impersonal, procedural methods for public problems have bred stalemate, frustration, and alienation. As alternatives he suggests how western patterns of inhabitation might engender a more cooperative, face-to-face practice of public life.Community and the Politics of Place also examines our ambivalence about the relationship between cities and rural areas and about the role of corporations in public life. The book offers new insight into the relationship between politics and economics and addresses the question of whether the nation-state is an appropriate entity for the...

Cheryl Woolsey Des Jarlais Western Structures Meet Native Traditions. The Interfaces of Educational Cultures (PB)

As Western educational practices have become global, the cultural aspects and the problems associatedwith them have become more apparent as they are contrasted with local ways of learning andknowing in the widely diverse societies around the world. The Western world has tended to assumethat its concepts of progress and development should be universally welcomed, especially in countriesthat are struggling economically. Most cultures tend to feel a similar preference for their ownworld views. However, the West has had a history of not only ethnocentrism, but colonialism, inwhich it has forcibly attempted to reshape the cultures, societies, politics, and economics of conqueredterritories in its own likeness. Though some of the more overt, political colonialist practiceshave been abandoned, colonial ways of thinking, thinking about thinking, and training in how tothink, are still practiced, and these in turn, through the education of each nation-state's children, affect every aspect of economics, politics, and social development in the global village that ourworld has become. It is critical to examine the basic assumptions of Western education in order to trace their effects on local ways ofknowing in many areas which may not share these assumptions, and which may be threatened and destroyed by them as global interactionin politics, economics, and education increases. The argument that education is primarily a moral endeavor may have been forced into the background for a time b...

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 1,3, Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The paper begins with a background on the country. Next, its economic policy and the current macroeconomic situation are analysed followed by the economic structure and international economic relations. Last but not least, after arriving at the main hindrances and potentials of the economy, a recommendation is given on how to make things better. On a global scale, Bangladesh is rather insignificant in terms of economic or political power. Furthermore, it is a country that is seldom reported about by Western media. The news coverage I have seen in the last years mainly pertained to natural disasters (heavy flooding) or political tension. More recently, however, terrible accidents in the garments factory have made the international headlines. Considering the fact that many of the clothes I wear contain a tag reminding me regularly that they are produced in this country, I was anxious to find out more.

Suman Reza Role of Microcredit in the Development of Rural Women of Bangladesh

Microcredit operations began with the specific objective of poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. Poverty is widespread in Bangladesh. It is even more intense among the rural women of the country. Poverty situation improved with the expansion of microcrdit and rural women gained some empowerment as they had their own income through participation in the credit activities. But they are still far from achieving equal status with men because microcredit primarily addresses income poverty and it has inherent weaknesses in facilitating other conditions necessary for full empowerment of women. Not only are the inherent weaknesses, the socio-economic environment of rural Bangladesh, where microcredit functions, is also a big impediment to achieving women empowerment. Therefore, a comprehensive approach, which includes microcredit too, is necessary for further empowering the rural women of Bangladesh. This approach includes social mobilization, awareness-building, regulations enhancing, equitable financial practices and government initiatives.

These reforms helped the country to achieve an immense economic upturn with annual growth rates of almost ten percent and thus made China an ever more important actor on the international stage of politics. The United States strongly support China's economic development by granting it permanent Normal Trade Relations, for example, and investing directly in China's manufacturing sector. But whereas China has been liberalizing its market, using American interests to gain profits, it largely maintains its defensive and rejecting attitude about changing its human rights situation. The literature on migration realities in Europe is usually centered around the role played by the EU on member states' migration policies. In order to offer a comparative cross-country approach, previous research often allows too much to fall through the cracks. Facets of Migration in Contemporary Europe: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Specific Challenges directly addresses this issue. Through its multidisciplinary approach, it includes contributions ranging from policy-oriented chapters dedicated to the role of low-skilled and 'illegal' migrants to the securitization of migration in Europe as well as the role of Diasporas and language policies for the integration of migrants. The central theme of the volume is that experiences of migration in Western European countries can help the emerging countries of immigration in Central and Eastern Europe to improve their migration policies and living conditions.

The storys underlying themes of city development, politics, and corruption draw on the authors exposure to the dark side of politics and town planning. Set in the isolated city of Perth, Western Australia, the story is likely similar in city halls and legislative chambers the world over.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Miscellaneous, grade: 5 (Schweiz), University of Bern (Geographisches Institut), course: Politische Geographie, language: English, abstract: Globalisation is marked by growing economic interdependence and internationalisation of capital. Some of the important characteristics of this phenomenon are the increasing interconnectedness between societies as a result of the rapid development of communications and growing trade, the invention of new technologies, increased capital mobility and the growing importance of transnational corporations (McGrew 2005: 22). It became increasingly clear that globalization was, from the beginning, a process based on gender discrimination, which meant it affected men and women differently in an economic, social and cultural sense. Global markets, free production zones, and new growth strategies make women the victims of development programmes. In Thailand, Bangladesh, Mexico, China and in many areas of the so-called "Third World", western capital exploits the cheapest workforce. The governments there have offered their young women to the international capital and were willing to create so-called "free production zones" in which the capital has great freedom. Free production zones are being strongly criticised, because foreign companies do not need to respect any labour protection laws in these areas, and have plenty of room to manoeuvre and ...

Bayes Ahmed, Rakibul Hasan ROLE OF REMITTANCE IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Over the past 25 years labour migration from Bangladesh has registered a steady increase. From 1990 onwards on an average 2,25,000 Bangladeshis are migrating on short-term employment. The recent trend of the bulk of the migrants is more towards semi and unskilled labour migration. Major outflow of Bangladeshi labour generated significant financial flow to the country in the form of remittance. However, due to increase in the flow of unskilled and semi- skilled labour, remittance is increasing at a much lower rate than the labour flow. Remittance is crucial for Bangladesh's economy. It constitutes almost one-third of the foreign exchange earning. In 1998-99, remittance contributed 22 percent in financing imports. Studies have shown it has strong positive impact on GDP, and also on consumption and investment. This research assesses to identify the role of remittance in rural development. It also evaluates current uses and impacts of remittance, the characteristics of remittance sending and remittance receiving persons. The research also explores the problems and possible potentials in effective uses of remittance for rural development through investment in productive sectors.

Jennifer Titanski-Hooper An Agenda for the Western Balkans. From Elite Politics to Social Sustainability.

The Western Balkan countries have been both a popular subject matter for diachronic analysis and a 1990s favorite. The significant changes that followed the most recent times of conflict in the region mostly evolve around the process of Europeanization. Despite the plethora of analyses, most approaches to the Western Balkans suffer from theoretical stagnancy, ex parte political practice, and detachment of politics from societal needs. This volume is the work of a team of theorists and practitioners who attempt a multidisciplinary approach to Western Balkans reality. An Agenda for the Western Balkans offers a critical view on issues that have been over-analyzed in mainstream terms and opens a discussion that will occupy researchers and practitioners for years to come. It addresses novel topics and engages in innovative approaches that cut across disciplines of social sciences (political science, international relations, sociology, historiography, geography, political economy) and levels of analysis (local, national, regional, European, global). This collection is a pioneer theoretical and practical guide towards a sustainable future for the Western Balkans.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 1,7, University of Bath (Modern Languages and European Studies), 64 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the move of the 'Europeanisation', the deepening and widening of the European Union, the system of European governance is becoming ever more complex. The increase from 15 to 25 Member States and the needs of cooperation amongst the different levels of the European Union (EU) - European, national, regional and local level - are posing a challenge to democracy. The lack of democratic legitimacy of today's traditional system requires alternative ways of governing which are already developing. A solution to the question of legitimacy and structure is the deliberative democracy theory of John Dryzek. In this context Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as representatives of civil society, are playing an important role and the EU promotes the cooperation with this sector. However, cooperation is concentrated on NGO umbrella organizations on the EU level. It is argued, that the socio-political strategy of the EU undermines the idea of deliberative democracy and in particular the function of NGOs. Through privileging selected, international networks the latter risk loosing their autonomy. Presents an original theoretical approach to political geography by revealing the paradoxical relationship between materials and politics Explores how political disputes have come to revolve not around objects in isolation, but objects that are entangled in ever growing quantities of information about their performance, origins, and impact Studies the example of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline – a fascinating experiment in transparency and corporate social responsibility – and its wide-spread negative political impact Capitalizes on the growing interdisciplinary interest, especially within geography and social theory, about the critical role of material artefacts in political life
