This essential resource offers an overall understanding of nonprofits based on both the academic literature and practitioner experience. It shows how to lead, manage, govern, and structure effective and ethical nonprofit organizations. Managing Nonprofit Organizations reveals what it takes to be entrepreneurial and collaborative, formulate successful strategies, assess performance, manage change, acquire resources, be a responsible financial steward, and design and implement solid marketing and communication plans. «Managing Nonprofit Organizations is the only introductory text on this subject that manages to do three critical things equally well: It's comprehensive, covering all the key topics leaders of NPOs need to know about; it's practical, providing lots of examples, case incidents, and experiential exercises that connect the content to the real world; and, best of all (and most unique compared to others), it's research-based, drawing on the latest and best empirical studies that look into what works and doesn't work in the world of nonprofit management.» —Vic Murray, professor, School of Public Administration, University of Victoria «This book is a rarity—a text that can be used both as the focus for academic study and as a source of stimulating ideas for those practitioners who want to explore theories about management and how they can be applied so they can do a better job. Tschirhart and Bielefeld have explained all aspects of nonprofit management and leadership in a way that will stimulate as well as inform.» —Richard Brewster, executive director, National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise, Virginia Tech University «Managing Nonprofit Organizations presents a comprehensive treatment of this important topic. The book satisfies the competencies and curriculum guidelines developed by NASPAA and by NACC and would be ideal for instruction. The book maintains its commitment to informing management and leadership throughout the nonprofit sector.» —Jeffrey L. Brudney, Albert A. Nonprofit managers, board members, funders, educators, and others will find Managing Nonprofit Organizations extremely valuable.» —Michael O'Neill, professor of nonprofit management, University of San Francisco «Here's the book that my students have been asking for—just the right mix of theory presentation, research findings, and practical suggestions to serve the thoughtful nonprofit management practitioner. It will inform, instruct, and ultimately, inspire.» —Rikki Abzug, professor of management, Anisfield School of Business, Ramapo College

Nonprofit organizations are facing challenges unheard of in prior times. Societal needs are higher than ever while resources dwindle. Nonprofit CEO’s and boards are confused about these and other challenges and what the future will bring. There is a good reason for their concern. Over six out of ten nonprofit leaders say they do not know how to create a compelling vision for the nonprofit. Half of nonprofit frontline managers’ report their nonprofit has no vision at all for either the present or future times. Some fifty percent of all nonprofits do not have a written strategic plan. Nearly forty percent of nonprofit leaders say they have high staff turnover rates. And eight out of ten nonprofits do not have a leadership succession plan.Leadership matters! Strategy matters! If the CEO is not setting clear expectations, the CEO is not managing. Rather the CEO is being managed by circumstances and the environment. Public scandals surrounding charitable nonprofit organizations have increased public scrutiny and criticism which resulted in an increased demand for accountability of charities and other nonprofit organizations. Reporting performance is necessary in order to be accountable for the organizations' performance. Performance reporting is more difficult in nonprofit organizations than in for-profit organizations since no profitability information can be communicated. Nonprofits tend to focus on other concepts to define performance; mainly efficiency, effectiveness and social value. The main theory on nonprofit performance is described in the Organizational Effectiveness literature. Impact assessment has been suggested as a way to measure nonprofit organizational performance. This concept is related to the effectiveness concept of goal attainment, but goes one step further and focuses on impact rather than mere outcomes. In this research a first attempt is made to measure the impact of a specific Dutch nonprofit organization, the Netherlands Heart Foundation. The impact is estimated on the costs related to AMI patients in the working population.

Faced with significant budget reductions, nonprofit organizations have moved beyond being one-dimensional entities that rely only on grants. Now, they attract social entrepreneurs who are determined to establish relationships before raising money—something that the late Dr. J. Gregory Dees, foresaw the need for in 1998 when he wrote about a hybrid structure that was enabling nonprofit organizations to generate additional income. Ultimately, Dees concluded that the hybrid structure with a social enterprise component would slow the mission of the nonprofit organization, leaving the social entrepreneur to think about how to create innovative strategies within social entrepreneurship. This book uses a case study focusing on the nonprofit organization, Rising Tide Capital, by expanding the scope of Dr. Dees’ research through an assessment of the meaning of social entrepreneurship, social enterprises, and financial stability. It also identifies financial stability through two processes of replication: replicable models through strategic partnerships and the mini-franchise of direct selling. Plot a path to bolster financial stability, think creatively about generating cash flow, and find alternative sources of funding with this guide to operating a successful nonprofit organization.

Audience behavior began to shift dramatically in the mid 1990s. Since then, people have become more spontaneous in purchasing tickets and increasingly prefer selecting specific programs to attend rather than buying a subscription series. Arts attenders also expect more responsive customer service than ever before. Because of these and other factors, many audience development strategies that sustained nonprofit arts organizations in the past are no longer dependable and performing arts marketers face many new challenges in their efforts to build and retain their audiences. Arts organizations must learn how to be relevant to the changing lifestyles, needs, interests, and preferences of their current and potential audiences. Arts Marketing Insights offers managers, board members, professors, and students of arts management the ideas and information they need to market effectively and efficiently to customers today and into the future. In this book, Joanne Scheff Bernstein helps readers to understand performing arts audiences, conduct research, and provide excellent customer service. She demonstrates that arts organizations can benefit by expanding the meaning of «valuable customer» to include single-ticket buyers. She offers guidance on long-range marketing planning and helps readers understand how to leverage the Internet and e-mail as powerful marketing channels. Bernstein presents vivid case studies and examples that illustrate her strategic principles in action from organizations large and small in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and other countries.

Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, Cleveland State University «This is an important book, written by two of the leading scholars in the nonprofit studies field.
