On top of that, the Japanese economy is the second largest in theworld. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Japans has been $ 4.7 trillions inthe year 2000. This makes Japans economy about 2.5 times larger than theGerman one measured in Dollars.1 In the light of Japans extraordinary role inworld economics, it would be very interesting to look at the background ofJapans historical development of economics. Unfortunately there is non or littleknowledge in Germany about this. The picture, we have here, is ofteninfluenced by clichés such as the Japanese imperialism, the pervasivegovernment bureaucracy and the impressing Japanese economic growth. However, the economy in Japan is no longer growing. The idea is to source the roots of the economic stability and performance of Latin America?s largest country and to highlight the implications it will have in the near and remote future. Chapter 2 focuses on the Real Plan launched in 1994. A set of reforms which transformed Brazil's economy from a protected economy facing four-digit inflation rates into a stable economy capable of competing with developed economies. It discusses the implementation of the Real Plan, its measures and its positive and negative consequences for the Brazilian economy.Furthermore we are going to deal with the recent past of Brazil's economy since the presidential elections in 2002, when the leader of the workers' party Lula da Silva was elected. We focus on the economic policy of the president and its government, whose election has almost led to the default of the Brazilian state because financial markets were afraid that the socialist candidate would pursue a 180 degree turn compared to the neoliberal economic policy of his predecessor. We analyze why Brazil was one of the last countries being affected by the financial...

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, Berlin School of Economics, language: English, abstract: Small and medium sized enterprises (SME) represent 99,8% of all businesses in the European Union (EU), provide two-thirds of the non-financial sector employment and account for 85% of the new jobs created in the past five years. Looking at the other side of the Atlantic, the situation is not very different: in the United Stated of America (USA) SMEs account for 99,7% of all firms and 48% of total private-sector employment. It is fair to say that SMEs are the backbone of the two largest economic areas of the world. Considering the enormous share that SMEs have in these economies, it becomes clear that the success of an economy largely depends on the development of its SMEs. This paper aims at examining the impact of SMEs on the development of economies in transition. Specifically, the transition countries of the Western Balkan (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM)) will be subject of this paper. Due to the limited word count, Serbia will be used as example since it is the largest economy in the region. The question to be answered is: "Can transition countries on the Western Balkan utilise the economic momentum of SMEs to facilitate economic growth? Evidence from Serbia".

Document from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: Currently in India we are observing that the number of labours are shifting from agriculture sector to other sectors of economy. The labour transition occurs due to several reasons one of the main reason is that the fixed wage rate in other sectors as compared to agriculture sector. In this context the Lewis model provides a good framework for explaining the ways in which the fruits of economic development are spread. Lewis divided developing economy into two sectors: subsistence and capital sector. He assumed that the subsistence sector was characterised by surplus labour and low real wages whereas capital sector characterised by capital intensive production and higher real wages. If we transfer excess labour from agriculture to capital sector it will not affect the production and productivity of subsistence sector and it will increase the production in capital sector which will help in development of economy. Lewis' model is mainly applicable surplus labour countries. If we take the example of China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam which have evidenced the Lewis model we can compare the India with those countries .China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam were gone through enormous labour transition which helped in the development of economy of the respective countries. Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, , language: English, abstract: Economic impact refers to the changes in the economic contribution resulting from specific events or activities that comprise 'shocks' to the tourism system. Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) are a statistical tool. They are used to report how much the tourism sector has contributed to an economy and how important the tourism sector is compared to other sectors in the economy. Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) tourism model can provide more realistic analytical recommendations to policy makers. More specifically, the model can be used to measure economy-wide yield for tourism destinations. The paper first outlines the nature and importance of TSAs as a measure of the economic contribution of tourism to an economy. TSAs based estimates of the direct contribution of tourism in Australia are provided to illustrate the use of this tool. The paper then discusses the importance of developing TSAs at the regional level and the approaches that can be employed (bottom up, top down, mixed), as well as the limitations of TSAs as a policy instrument. It then discusses CGE modelling as a tool of economic impact analysis providing CGE based estimates of the economic impacts of increased inbound tourism to Queensland to illustrate the use of this technique. The analysis is expected to enhance stakeholder understanding the separate roles that TSAs and CGE modelling can play in d...

Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a Computable General Equilibrium Model for an economy (hereafter referred to as CGE-Tourism) for tourism impact analysis. The core model of CGE-Tourism closely follows the well-known Australian ORANI model and the extension of tourism to the core model closely follows the recent work of Australian tourism modellers. This paper contains six sections. The second section provides a brief summary of economic impact analysis of tourism. Section three outlines the overview of the theoretical structure and implementation of the CGE-Tourism model. The system of equations of the core model of CGE-Tourism is presented in section four. It is not possible to identify tourism as a single "industry" in the national accounts, its value to the economy is not readily revealed. As a result of the absence of tourism in off...

Us and The New Gig EconomyThe new shared economy, or gig economy as it is called, has benefited millions of people around the world to become self-employed and financially independent by sharing their cars, homes, and other products and services with other people for a specific period of time in return for financial gain. It also allowed the owners and vested institutions of these new economies to amass considerable wealth and influence in a relatively short period of time without the benefit to changes in local, state, and federal laws that would enable all stakeholders to have an equitable share in its huge success. An attempt to interpret current laws to deal with challenges created by the new shared economy has in many cases resulted in unlawful disruptions to the transportation and hospitality industries by billion-dollar companies such as Uber and Airbnb in major cities around the world. While there is no doubt that the business models adopted by these entities are working and thriving well, they have nevertheless used every aggressive tool in the playbook and engaged in deliberate unethical business practices to take full advantage of the wholly unprepared and inadequately equipped regulatory agencies to bully their way into the marketplace. This book was written to share my experiences with readers to take a look from a basic level how peoples' lives are affected by working in the new gig economy that transforms the way we work, with the freedom to work anywhere an...

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: 1,3, University of Wuppertal (Jean Monnet Chair for European Economic Integration), language: English, abstract: The elementary technology the "Internet" enabled the fourth industrial revolution. It changed the way people work. The collaboration in server-clouds and the so-called "Internet of Things" allows even machines to interact. Many questions are still unsolved, e.g. the key technologies or their impact on the economic growth of economics. Nowadays the transformation process is ongoing while the impact of this technological change is still unclear. The McKinsey consulting group estimates that just the internet accounts for 21 percent of the GDP growth in major economies over the past five years. Furthermore, researcher mention that the share of ICT capital is often underestimated. In real terms (evaluated in prices in 1995), the share of ICT was roughly twice as high, because of the continuously falling prices for ICT technologies and services. Fifteen years prior, the landscape internet-driven companies seemed to stop the growth path after the "Dotcom-Crash". Before, the expectations of immense productivity gains were higher than the possibilities of the technology. Also, the average employee was not ready to handle the challenges of digitalization, robotic and the pace of technological change. In 2017 digitalization and automatization literature provides a ...

If we wish to remain true to the laws of logic and of the nature of things, we must set the economy of individuals against the economy of societies, and discriminate in respect to the latter between true political or national economy... and cosmopolitan economy, which originates in the assumption that all nations of the earth form but one society living in a perpetual state of peace.-from "Chapter 11: Political and Cosmopolitical Economy"One of the most prominent economic philosophers of the 19th century, on a par with-but espousing quite different thinking than-Karl Marx and Adam Smith explores, in the three-volume National System of Political Economy, a reasoned doctrine of national and pan-national management of trade, a global collaboration between government and business. In Volume 2, he delineates his theory of supportive interconnectedness, discussing everything from the value of the individual's ability to produce wealth to the edge established businesses have over new ones. A close reading of this 1841 classic is an absolute necessity for anyone who hopes to understand world economic history of the last 150 years.German economist and journalist FRIEDRICH LIST (1789-1846) served as professor of administration and politics at the University of Tübingen, but was later jailed and later exiled to America for his political views. His is also the author of Outlines of American Political Economy (1827).

Liberalizing reforms were intended to have a strong impact on the investment process. The method of allowing FDI started in the 1990's, when the economy was liberalized, thereby allowing foreign goods to this paper tries to examine the developments in both economic and political aspects, relating to the growth in the FDI. We also evaluate and try to establish whether there is any relation between the FDI and the economic growth and prosperity across the various Indian states. In other words, has the link between the economic growth of a state and the amount of FDI become stronger in the aftermath of the reforms? Another point to notice is that there appears to be a large amount of regional income disparity between the states due to the larger amounts of association of FDI.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1, University of Vienna (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: The main questions that arise given this way of thinking about the connection between metaphor and culture are on the one hand „To what extent do people share their metaphors?", which at first seemingly trivial becomes much more significant and interesting if we ourselves „To what extent do people around the world share their understandings of images and aspects of the world they live in?". These questions are of particular interest to me, and were decisive for me regarding the selection of the topic of this paper. In fact, the field of „Metaphor and Culture" comprises many subtopics, such as for instance „Universality in Metaphorical Conceptualization", „Cross-Cultural and Within-Cultural Variation in Metaphor", „Conceptual Metaphors and Their Linguistic Expression in Different Languages", „Metaphor and Cultural Models", or „The Causes of Metaphor Variation". Since I did not want to be too general in this paper, and also wanted to give insight into some practical aspects of the topic, I decided to concentrate on a two specific „subtopics", and deal with them in greater detail. In the first part, the paper will shed light on a study by Talebinejad & Dastjerdi´s (2005), who chose animal metaphors for the comparison in two typologically different languages, namely E...

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Allgemeines und Theorien, Note: 4.08/5.0, Covenant University (College of Leadership and development Studies), Veranstaltung: International Relations, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This study is focused on changing the culture of Nigeria's economy from a mono-product oil based economy to a diversified economy. Although the non-oil sector of Nigeria's economy is a vast one, this study focuses on the African catfish aquaculture industry because of its huge lucrative potentials of contribution to the diversification of Nigeria's economy. This research will help the average Nigerian citizen who is being ravaged with poverty due to the on-going economic recession that keeps coming back in every administration. It will also help policy makers promulgate sound policies that support economy diversification and condemn the mono-cultural nature of the economy. Since Nigeria leads the production of African Catfish on the continent of Africa this research should make the government see sense in investing in the production of African Catfish on a large scale which in turn will generate massive employment and contribute to the diversification of the economy leading to economic wealth and sustainable development instead of spending $700 million USD on importing fish every year. Lastly, it will help future researchers in the field of international trade and economy since the motive is to add to the gro...

Lothar Muller White Magic. The Age of Paper

Paper is older than the printing press, and even in its unprinted state it was the great network medium behind the emergence of modern civilization. In the shape of bills, banknotes and accounting books it was indispensible to the economy. As forms and files it was essential to bureaucracy. As letters it became the setting for the invention of the modern soul, and as newsprint it became a stage for politics. In this brilliant new book Lothar Müller describes how paper made its way from China through the Arab world to Europe, where it permeated everyday life in a variety of formats from the thirteenth century onwards, and how the paper technology revolution of the nineteenth century paved the way for the creation of the modern daily press. His key witnesses are the works of Rabelais and Grimmelshausen, Balzac and Herman Melville, James Joyce and Paul Valéry. Müller writes not only about books, however: he also writes about pamphlets, playing cards, papercutting and legal pads. We think we understand the ?Gutenberg era?, but we can understand it better when we explore the world that underpinned it: the paper age. Today, with the proliferation of digital devices, paper may seem to be a residue of the past, but Müller shows that the humble technology of paper is in many ways the most fundamental medium of the modern world.

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, University of Kelaniya, course: Economic Modelling, language: English, abstract: Measuring the contribution of tourism to a national economy has always been a frustrating exercise. Tourism does not have specific products. It represents the sum of expenditure by travellers for wide range of products. It is not possible to identify tourism as a single "industry" in the national accounts, its value to the economy is not readily revealed. As a result of the absence of tourism in official economic statistics, there is often an on-going battle to establish tourism credibility as an economic activity and generator of income in the economy. As a result, a significant volume of tourism research over the past few decades have focussed on the development and use of a variety of economic techniques aimed at quantifying the effects of tourism on an economy. In conventional literature has proven that Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling is the best applied tool addressing and analysing tourism related issues in an economy. The paper provided a complete description of the theoretical structure of the CGE-Tourism including all equations and variables by using relevant Excerpts for different blocks of equations in the TABLO file associated with the GEMPACK software used to operationalise the model. The incorporation of tourism using the dummy sector approach into an ORANI type CGE model as an extension and can be co...

Results reveal that an economy that is twice larger exports two times more and most of the variations in its export occur predominantly at the extensive margin, whereas the intensive margin accounts largely in the variations in its imports. However, a large developed country does export at the intensive margin, whereas the extensive margin account for a large part of the variations in a large (by doubling GDP PPP) for developing country's export.

Isn't this a blasphemy? On the contrary: we believe that economists are able to contribute to a better understanding of many different aspects of both the visual and the performing arts."(Bruno Frey & Werner Pommerehne 1990:vii)Economy and art - for many decades these two fields were considered to be incompatible. But with the genesis of cultural economics the application of economic theories on art became generalizable. Among others Bruno Frey, a Swiss economist, devoted a great deal of his research work to explorer in what way an economic viewpoint and/or the market can be beneficial to art and what effects different instruments have on the arts and on society in general. The first part of this book is giving a short overview of the development and characteristics of Cultural Economy and introduces Bruno Frey's work. Afterwards Frey's argumentation considering the effects of the market on art is presented and contrasted with other authors in order to proceed to a general critique of the market. Concluding, the book opens up a global perspective, underlining the consequences of an economisation of the arts.

While the melting of the ice or a slightly rising sea level does not have huge economical impact yet, there are already some natural catastrophes like the hurricanes Katrina or Sandy and storm floods in Japan after the earthquake in 2011 that influence global economy. This essay portrays different causes of climate change (such as anthropological and natural reasons) to then uncover the effects of climate change on global economy. Also, effects of actions to regulate climate change on global economy will be discussed.

One often mentioned and tested approach to the field is the race to the bottom hypothesis. In this seminar paper the race to the bottom hypothesis will be tested for land use policy and therein the regulation of secondary residences in Switzerland. The broader frame for the study is provided through the people ́s legislative initiative on the federal level on secondary residences, the Zweitwohnungsinitiative. It has been submitted to a popular vote in Switzerland on 11 March 2012 and succeeded with a razor-thin majority of 50.6 % of total votes. The initiative demands that the share of secondary residences in the Swiss communities can not exceed 20 % of the total number of residences. In those communities that already have a higher share an immediate building freeze has to be enacted. Longchamp et al. showed that the share of secondary residences in a community is a good explanatory for the result of the popular vote. Those communities with a share already higher than 20 % mostly voted no, while the communities with less secondary residences...

Why do enterprises which are suc-cessfully operating in their home market decide on making investments in unknown and more insecure markets? Why do investment destinations have an interest in admitting foreign investors into the economy? Considering that FDI has grown in importance in the global economy in the last decades, obviously there has to be significant advantages for both sides. The World Investment Report (WIR) of UNCTAD reports in their recent publication (2008) high records in FDI flows in the world (UNCTAD 2008a). While developed countries still attract the largest volume of FDI inflows, developing countries possess the highest growth rate in drawing a significant volume of investment into their economy. The authors of this volume explore these complexities, including how economic exchanges forge key social relationships of gender and ethnicity, how economic opportunities are constructed and seized, and how economic success and failure are transformed into attributes of social persons. They explore how, despite - or perhaps because of - their unstable and ambiguous position within the market economy, shared today with a growing number of people facing precarity and informalisation, Roma and Gypsy communities continuously re-create more or less viable economic strategies. The ethnographically based chapters share accounts of socially and economically vulnerable populations that face their situation with self-determination and creativity.

Following the most severe financial crises since WW2, the Turkish economy demonstrated a stellar growth performance after 2001. The strong commitment to the fiscal discipline and to the powerful external anchors such as the IMF and EU were key to this success. The central question is what motivated the JDP government to show this long-lasting commitment to the fiscal discipline and the external anchors particularly to the IMF-induced economic programs. Growing ties with the global economy, the new institutional framework, the new balance of power within the networks shaping the Turkish political economy and the successful implementation of the JDP's prudent political economy agenda are the four plausible explanations for the central question. Each of these explanations is elaborated in a separate chapter and the growing ties with the global economy prevail as the most competent explanation since it directly contributes to the emerging of the other three explanations.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This dissertation examines the critical importance of foreign direct investment in the growth of Ireland. It explains the reasons for Ireland’s success and identifies the key steps in the history. The analysis is carried out in terms of the role of the Irish government policy in promoting foreign direct investment. Without the influence of foreign direct investment inflows, the economy would not have grown to the extent as it has. This paper will also show how important foreign direct investment is for the Irish economy in the future. The paper describes several theories about foreign direct investment. It addresses the advantages and disadvantages. More in depth this paper investigates the determinants of financial services sector investments abroad. It will also be shown how the Industrial Development Authority as an agency and the International Financial Services Centre contributed to Ireland’s success. The example Hypo Real Estate Bank International illustrates how an investment in Ireland succeeded. This paper should attract readers with an interest in the Irish history and economy, in the role of foreign direct investment for a country’s economy, or in financial services sector investments abroad. Introduction: O’Connor and Forde (2003) refer to George Bernard Shaw, who quipped in the 1930s, that he hoped to be in Ireland on the day the world ended, because the Irish were always 50 years behind the times.
