Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: 2,3, University of Applied Sciences Regensburg, course: Sicherheitspolitik, language: English, abstract: Civil-military cooperation has been becoming increasingly important in peace-keeping and natural disasters. An effective cooperation between civil and military actors facilitates the integrated mission in the specific host country. For this reason both civil and military actors developed guidelines on how civil-military cooperation should ideally work. There are, however, conflicts that arise between civil and military actors. Due to different objectives of the organizations, there are disputes on how things should be done. There has already been research on how to analyze the differences and how to solve them but a solution has not been found yet.In this bachelor thesis the Organizational Theory Modell is presented to explain theese conflicts. The Organizational Theory Modell is used by Graham Allison and Philip Zelikow to explain events that happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This approach to explain international conflicts is so far unique.During the civil-military exercises of the first German-Netherlands Corps, one of the training objectives was to train civil-military cooperation. Also during these exercises, conflicts occurred between the civil and the military side. To make the conflicts better understandable the method of c...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: A-, , course: Political Islam, language: English, abstract: 'Identity and a Modern State' was the official slogan adopted by the first Salafi Al-Nour party during the Egyptian revolution of 2011. This remarked only as the beginning to the politicization process of the Salafi orientation in Egypt. On July 3 2013, however, the military intervened and deposed the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, the first elected Islamist president in a modern Egyptian discourse. This research study will focus on the reasons why Egyptian Salafis have integrated themselves into politics in the first place using the components of political opportunity theory as a conceptual framework of the study.

"Oklahoma Politics might well be the best general history of a Western state."Western Historical Quarterly"Thoroughly researched and well written, this book is a solid study of the evolution of Oklahoma's political system."Southwestern Historical QuarterlyOklahoma Politics offers a thorough and accurate history of the state's government. Beginning with the elections of the territorial era, the authors progress through the early 1980s, covering every major election in the state's history and including biographical sketches of promintent political figures, discussion of controversies in the statehouse, and explanation of the state's role in national affairs.Although comprehensive in scope, Oklahoma Politics is more than a compendium of political data. The authors examine the history of the commonwealth as something of a model for understanding the evolution of state politics in general during the twentieth century. Born during the Progressive Era, the state has been host to nearly every major force in American state politics since: grassroots agrarian radicalism, a potent Ku Klux Klan, the turmoil of the Great Depression, the post-World War II revolution in the federal-state relationship, and the emergence of modern Republican conservatism, all making Oklahoma a laboratory of political change.Incorporating many findings of political scientists, the authors develop a new perspective from which to view Oklahoma's political history, but without ...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, London School of Economics (Department of International Development), course: MSc International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies, language: English, abstract: Land conflict in Acholi has often been expounded in reference to the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) civil war - that is, the long period of LRA civil war and displacement that led to loss of land boundaries and alteration of socio-cultural norms and practices which weakened the institution of traditional authority in handling land-related matters. This paper argues that the dispute over land in Acholi is a result of the incongruity based on principles between the modern state and traditional Acholi land institution, which work parallel to each other hence producing confusions that trigger conflict.

The study adopted ex-post-facto research design. Data were gathered from secondary sources. Robert K. Merton's anomie theory was adopted as the study's theoretical framework. The study found that the crime of salary fraud persists in Bayelsa State civil service despite measures taken by government to stem it. It also discovered that the challenges such as lack of adequate funds and corruption confronting the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) are responsible for the futile prosecution of culprits. Based on these discoveries, the study recommends amongst others, that Bayelsa State Government should train Forensic accountants to man all her Ministries, Departments, and Agencies as a proactive measure to check fraud.

Singer argued in 2004. In international relations scholarship, numerous research is available on this topic since the PMI started its rise during the 1990s. After having identified a rather "new" phenomenon in world politics, the process of the politicization and analytical analysis follows, drawing a comparison to a policy-analysis approach. Doing research on private actors in world politics, offering services falling within the military domain, from a postinternational perspective is a rather new thing. Most researchers analyze the PMI as such, their institutional design, their organization and classify them according to the services they offer. This research is based on a different approach. It analyzes the implications of the PMI to the Westphalian state and state system by referring to postinternationalism as a worldview. What constitutes the postinternational worldview - and what indicators I will use based on this worldview - is explained in part II dealing with theory. Theory in this paper in principle can be summed up with the phrase that "the Westphalian state as such is decl...

Sophie Falsini The Euromaidan.s Effect on Civil Society. Why and How Ukrainian Social Capital Increased after the Revolution of Dignity

Sophie Falsini presents a fascinating analysis of the current state and future prospects of Ukrainian civil society in light of the 2013-2014 events. Since then, the country has been shaken by both socio-political disorders and a deep humanitarian emergency, also exacerbated by the crisis of internally displaced people. Yet, it is under these same premises that civil society emerged as a main societal actor in post-Euromaidan politics, development, and reform. Through its war relief work and the endeavors to lead Ukraine towards democratization, civil society has, to a considerable degree, offset the lack of an efficient state administration and activated vital components of Ukrainian social capital. In respect to these achievements, Falsini explores the way and the extent to which the events occurring in Ukraine since late 2013-the Euromaidan revolution, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in the East-have contributed to the growth of social capital as well as to the resulting change in the shape and in the structure of civil society in the country.Through a multidimensional approach, combining theoretical interpretation with empirical analysis, the study examines Ukraine's transformed civil society in terms of its social relations, societal networks and resources, and collective action. Based on the theory of social capital after Lin Nan, the empirical analysis revolves around the case studies of 12 civil society organizations active in providing help to internally dis...

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, University for Peace (Department of Peace and Conflict Studies), course: International Peace Studies, language: English, abstract: Contemporary Cambodia is most likely best known for two things, aid dependency and corruption. The thesis initially seeks to examine the nexus between foreign aid and corruption in Cambodia since 1993, the time when a huge influx of foreign aid injected into the country following the withdrawal of UNTAC, then explores if the correlation of the two encourages the propensity of civil war, and ultimately analyzes if the onset of civil war is attainable in the case that the propensity of civil war is feasible. Drawing from the analysis, the thesis concludes that "Foreign aid, particularly loans, indirectly instigates civil war by partly generating corruption, particularly political corruption, because corruption makes aid ineffective in contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction, while encourages huge economic inequality and chronic poverty, which makes Cambodia more vulnerable and prone to civil war". However, the civil war in Cambodia is manifested or not depends on the motivation and initiative to be resisted and the means of financing the resistant group. Given the status quo of Cambodia, it is possible that the prominent opposition groups such as the opposition political parties can in...

The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

In order to be a "good person" ethics must be present in the form of virtues. Meanwhile in Politics, he argues that the city or state must come before family which comes before the individual. The idea that the need s of the many outweighs the needs of the few had its roots in Aristotle's philosophy of politics.

On the one hand two similar theories about regional power and small state behaviour in the face of a civil conflict in the small state by Benjamin Miller are taken out of their original context1 and applied to the case of Sri Lanka. In constituting India as the regional power and Sri Lanka as the small state in these scenarios, it can be examined whether this case can be seen as in accordance with Miller's theories in the main points, and maybe even help to understand the processes around the Indo-Sri Lankan accord better. India will be checked according to its capabilities and interests in the region, which will show, if India's peace keeping role was actually motivated mainly by a regional hegemonic ambition? And the question will be raised, if Sri Lanka accepted the accord out of its own will, or due to Indian dominace? The second theoretical approach is the Two Level Games Theory by Robert ...

Volume 1 of this two-volume work covers anti-slavery sentiment in the South between 1857 and 1860, the presidential election of 1860, the secession of the South, Lincoln's administration, and military campaigns. AbstractThis little book documents the brief history of contemporarySouth Sudanese politics within the context of the 22 years ofthe second war of liberation. A portion of it explores 17 yearsof the first Sudanese civil war that ended in 1972 through theAddis-Abba Agreement. The book has made the meaningfulanalysis of the governance after the birth of the World’snewest Republic (South Sudan). It is divided into seven majorchapters. Each chapter addresses the unique context of theSouth Sudanese political, civil, religious and military life.Chapter one introduces the book in its etymological contextto the reader and chapter two narrates on ethnic groupingsin South Sudan. This chapter appreciates positive contributionsmade by various ethnic groups in supporting the warefforts. In chapter four, the author teased the negative politicsrendered in ethnic context and explained how that negativityresulted in bloodshed of innocent civilians. In this chapter, some theories that have aided negative ethnic politics in thecountry have been discussed. Peter Egyed The Indians and the Civil War - Effects of the American Civil War on the Native American History

The North American Indian - or, as they prefer to be called themselves: Native American - history has always been a study full of ambiguous points. Nowadays, when the outlived tribes still live on poor circumstances and try to keep step with our running world despairingly, their unique culture deserves more attention than used to. I created my book with the goal of explore and uncover maybe the most tragic and exciting period of Native American persecutions: in the age of the Civil War. In this synthesis-like work I have tried to demonstrate that the Civil War influenced the Indian Wars in the American West in several aspects. The analysis has been built by three units; The first one is a survey on the Indian history from the beginnings till the 1860s. The middle part contents deep connections between the Civil War and Indian politics. The last chapter presents useful instructions for educational purposes. I recommend this compilation for those who are interested in Native American / Civil War history and politics or simply eager to obtain some knowledge of them and for those who would like to get practical ideas to process this odd topic for school lesson teaching.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, grade: 1,8, University of Freiburg (Institute of Sociology), course: Sociology, language: English, abstract: This thesis argues that we can no longer ignore elite's enrolment of institutions in rendering what they do intelligible as political outcomes in our understanding of African politics. The complex interdependency between elites and institution inheres into politics in ways political practices and actions are fabricated as permissible in the state of affair. This interaction is best understood through Actor-Network Theory (ANT) which essentializes hybridization in its conceptualization of the world. In this network thinking, transitional elites align and advance their interests through translating and enrolling institutions in the process of democratization. The analysis draws from Nigeria's democratization experience to bring together the institutional components of the state and leadership, i.e. elites, which have been mostly analyzed as separate entities in the study of democratization. The actor-network theory is used both as a conceptual frame and as a method for analyzing democratization as an outcome of the content of the two main societal forces- elite and institution. The actor-network theory's, developed by Michel Callon and Bruno Latour, and their collaborators, flat ontology provides a way to bypass agency/structure dichotomy t...

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, Bielefeld University (bghs), language: English, abstract: This study explores how Bourdieusian structural constructivism contributes to our understanding of state identity in international relations. While there has been a significant concentration of constructivism on the description and understanding of state identity, constructivist approaches still have not comprehensively answered all the controversial questions of structural theories. The aim of the book, thus, is to improve understanding of state subjectivity and identity by means of Bourdieusian sociological approach, which provides a basis to form a middle-way between the structuralist and constructivist perspectives on the issues of identity and state. I test the applicability of Bourdieusian terminology in the fields of economic and social capital. In order to illustrate the theoretical dabates of the research in a more comprehensive way, the chapters in this stage utilize distinctive methodological concepts of neoliberalism, democratisation and the developing state. Ultimately, the book determines how Bourdieusian structural constructivism improves the theory of international relations beyond the existing borders of constructivism.

Hope Tichaezana Chichaya Human Security and Civil Society in Africa

It is sorely the responsibility of the state to provide security to its own citizens. But sometimes the challenge of failing states in Africa results in ethical attacks against the state from non-state actors. Usually the response could be to condemn, correct, coalesce, command or commend the state to behave accordingly. But such a response especially by the civil society requires a comprehensive analytical framework of its role, hence human security. This book attempts to analyse the role of the civil society in promoting human security in contexts of increased vulnerability. A case study of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance is used given the deplorable context of the decade of crisis in Zimbabwe (1998-2008). This must have book for university and college libraries, for NGOs, researchers and practitioners in peacebuilding, human security, and civil society and even for policy analysts. This is because the book identifies and evaluates strategies in advancing human security by the civil society and then further suggests further factors to consider towards enhancing it. The book gives a glaring clarity of the influence of the civil society and state relations in Zimbabwe.

LEVIATHAN or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil-commonly referred to as Leviathan-is a book written by Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and published in 1651 (revised Latin edition 1668). Its name derives from the biblical Leviathan. The work concerns the structure of society and legitimate government, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory. Leviathan ranks as a classic western work on statecraft comparable to Machiavelli's The Prince. Written during the English Civil War (1642-1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and the brute situation of a state of nature ("the war of all against all") could only be avoided by strong undivided government... (more on www.wsiehouse-classics.com)

The increase from 15 to 25 Member States and the needs of cooperation amongst the different levels of the European Union (EU) - European, national, regional and local level - are posing a challenge to democracy. The lack of democratic legitimacy of today's traditional system requires alternative ways of governing which are already developing. A solution to the question of legitimacy and structure is the deliberative democracy theory of John Dryzek. In this context Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as representatives of civil society, are playing an important role and the EU promotes the cooperation with this sector. However, cooperation is concentrated on NGO umbrella organizations on the EU level. It is argued, that the socio-political strategy of the EU undermines the idea of deliberative democracy and in particular the function of NGOs. Through privileging selected, international networks the latter risk loosing their autonomy. The war and views of a foot soldier in grayThe author of this book has written of his experiences of the American Civil War from the perspective of an ordinary private soldier of the North Carolina Infantry. Modern readers should allow for the fact that James Carson was very much a man of his time and place. His support for the Confederacy and the Southern way of life of the mid-nineteenth century is evident within these pages and include an ardent belief in the slave system. Nevertheless, this book is invaluable for those interested in a Confederate view of life on the sharp end of the infantryman's war including scenes of the march, camp life and the battlefield particularly at Petersburg. Throughout human history, religion and politics have entertained the most intimate of connections as systems of authority regulating individuals and society. While the two have come apart through the process of secularization, secularism is challenged today by the return of public religion. This cogent analysis unravels the nature of the connection, disconnection, and attempted reconnection between religion and politics in the West. In a comparison of Western Europe and North America, Christianity and Islam, Joppke advances far-reaching theoretical, historical, and comparative-political arguments. With respect to theory, it is argued that only a “substantive” concept of religion, as pertaining to the existence of supra-human powers, opens up the possibility of a historical-comparative perspective on religion. At the level of history, secularization is shown to be the distinct outcome of Latin Christianity itself. And at the level of comparative politics, the Christian Right in America which has attacked the “wall of separation” between religion and state and Islam in Europe with the controversial insistence on sharia law and other “illiberal” claims from some quarters are taken to be counterpart incarnations of public religion and challenges to the secular state. This clearly argued, sweeping book will provide an invaluable framework for approaching an array of critical issues at the intersection of religion, law and politics for advanced students and researchers across the social sciences and legal studies, as well as for the interested public.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: 2,0, University of Constance, language: English, abstract: This study investigates whether there is a significant impact of different authoritarian regimes, namely personalist and nonpersonalist civilian autocracies as well as their respective military counterparts, on the termination of civil war. The paper suggests that in civil wars those regimes that function on a civilian basis have an advantage in co-opting their opponents to reach a settlement of the conflict. Furthermore, military leaders are expected to be less reluctant towards the use of force than civilian ones which should make them more likely to win civil wars. The same applies to personalist dictators who are hypothesised to view the state as their own and are inclined to forcefully defend their achievements. Several multinomial logit models are tested for the time period between 1946 and 2010. The average predicted probabilities show that personalist civilian regimes indeed are more likely to reach a settlement than other types. Nonpersonalist civilian dictatorships are correctly hypothesised to least likely win an intra-state war, whereas personalist military leaders do so with a comparatively high probability.

It begins with the overthrow of the Iranian regime in 1953, and continues until the current rush for resources in the Arctic. However, the book does not simply outline these events, but, it also explains the reasons for the specific development of states acts. Thereby, this study is based on the International Political Economy and International Relations theory - a combination that makes this book unique. Finally, the book gives the reader an insight of the petro state while outlining the strategic importance of oil itself.

John Locke Two Treatises of Government

Published after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 brought William of Orange and Mary to the throne, but written in the throes of the Whig revolutionary plots against Charles II in the early 1680s, John Locke offers a theory of natural law and natural rights which distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate civil governments, and argues for the legitimacy of revolt against tyrannical governments. These radical ideas remain influential today. In these two treatises the political philosopher John Locke espouses radical theories which influenced the ideologies of the American and French revolutions, and became the basis for the social and political philosophies of Rousseau, Voltaire and the United States founding fathers. In the first treatise Locke aims to refute the doctrine of the patriarchal and absolute right of the Divine Right of Kings doctrine put forth by Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha. He examines key Biblical passages to prove that scripture does not support Filmer's premise. The second treatise offers Locke's positive theory of government in which he establishes a theory which reconciles the liberty of the citizen with political order. His basic premise is founded on the independence of the individual. He declares that men are born free and equal in their rights and that wealth is the product of labor. In his revolutionary theory of the social contract he proposes that a legitimate civil government must preserve the rights to life, liberty, health and prop...

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 1,3, Vilnius University, 60 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis studies the prospects for democratic transition in Cuba and Belarus. The theoretical part argues that civil society is an important variable in transition theory and a necessary condition for democratic transition. It furthermore argues that in relation with the political culture of one society and the respective type of regime present in one country it is decisive for a successful democratization. Therefore the theoretical framework to study democratic transition should be widened from elites to masses and from a short term perspective to a long term one. This is somewhat different from other studies that concentrate on structural factors like economic development, economic crisis or international influence to explain democratic transition. This thesis undertakes a qualitative comparative analysis of two nontransition cases, Belarus and Cuba, to avoid the selection bias of researching only successful cases of democratic transition and to solve the problem of not finding any individually necessary or jointly sufficient conditions for democratization. The aforementioned factors are analyzed for each case, comparing the main findings and drawing conclusions. The analysis shows that the state of civil society in both countries can only be characterized as embryonic. This book also illustratesthis development has, in the main, been motivated by an attempt to assert or gainpower and why the study of blindness in conventional academic subjects such aspsychology, history and sociology is so important. We do this by presenting themain theories of disability and blindness that have informed the writing of thisbook, and a frame of reference for the historical story. The question that underlies the third chapter is: Have the trade policies of the EU contributed to the external constraints which hamper the development of developing countries?

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0 / 85%, University of Warwick (Politics and International Studies), course: International Political Economy (Dissertation), language: English, abstract: In this work I analyze commodity futures markets (CFMs) in order to shed light on the debated relationship between neoclassical economic theory and real-world markets. I show that CFMs clearly reflect a number of neoclassical aspects, but its asocial assumptions mean that the theory fails to explain how these came to be realized. Performativity theory, despite itself neglecting the 'political' factors of agency, power and distribution to a certain extent, proves to be a suitable alternative explanatory approach. Its idea of economic theory as a 'blueprint' can be recognized in conscious steps during the formation of CFMs, which increased the fit of these markets to the neoclassical ideal. Agency and power played a substantial role in shaping performative processes, which led to an approximation of market equilibrium and corresponding positive distributional effects. These outcomes proved to be instable, however, as the entry of big investors in the wake of the current 'financialization' of CFMs had disequilibrating consequences. The resulting instances of counterperformativity shifted the markets away from neoclassical theory and led to adverse distributional impacts.

Paulina Ochoa Espejo The Time of Popular Sovereignty. Process and the Democratic State

Democracy is usually conceived as based on self-rule or rule by the people, and it is this which is taken to ground the legitimacy of the democratic form of government. But who constitutes the people? Democratic political theory has a potentially fatal weakness at its core unless it can answer this question satisfactorily. In The Time of Popular Sovereignty, Paulina Ochoa Espejo examines the problems the concept of the people raises for liberal democratic theory, constitutional theory, and critical theory. She argues that to solve these problems, the people cannot be conceived as simply a collection of individuals. Rather, the people should be seen as a series of events, an ongoing process unfolding in time. She then offers a new theory of democratic peoplehood, laying the foundations for a new theory of democratic legitimacy.

Malika Rebai Maamri The Dimensions of Democratic Citizenship in Algeria

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: By mid-twentieth century, citizenship and democracy had become a grand narrative about cohesion within society as well as about representation and misrepresentation within the modern state. Building a national identity proceeds hand-in-hand with the tasks of building a legitimate state and democratic institutions. In Africa for instance, the issues of democracy and citizenship have come to the centre stage. Many post-independent African governments have attempted to construct and strengthen the national consciousness of their citizens. Such policy formed part of broader projects meant to develop and promote national identity and the ties that bind them to one another as well as emphasize the bonds between state and citizens. However the blurring of such issues as participation, civil society, nation-state, citizenship and democracy, robbed as it were, the public sphere of its 'ideal' status, particularly with regard to its potential as an integrative force in society. While pervasive poverty constitutes the main hindrance to democracy in some countries, in others, the democratic deficit rests on other considerations. Everyday experience of citizenship in post-colonial Algeria has revolved around a sense of what is lacking, the absence of entitlements, respect and dignity shattered by the French colonisers, a sense of longi...

Dylan Kissane Tracking Power and Predicting Conflict

Charles Doran and Wes Parsons’ innovative power cycle methodology for measuring international power and explaining the onset of conflict spurred theorists to re-examine their assumptions about power. The world, however, has changed markedly in the decades since power cycle theory first emerged. The advent of globalisation, the emergence of powerful regional institutions and the transfer of state sovereignty to transnational non-state actors all suggest that power cycle theory and its twentieth-century assumptions are in need of reformulation. It is now time to embrace new measures of state power – including national innovative power and ‘soft power’ – and to recognise that military power is no longer superior to economic power. It is time, also, to recognise the growing power of non-state actors and to account for their power in the world of states. The reformulation of power cycle theory herein will be of interest not only to scholars and students of international relations but also the lay reader with a curiosity about the present and future of world politics.

Since the final collapse of Somalia’s repressive regime in 1991, Somalia has presented the world not only with the most profound case of state collapse witnessed in modern times but also with one of the most intriguing cases of political fragmentation, armed conflicts, lawlessness and statelessness. Inevitably the last 20 years of statelessness and chaos has left the Somali economy destitute and made Somalia to be ranked among the five poorest ‘countries’ in the world. Contributors to this volume examine efforts at reconstituting the failed Somali state and the role of the Somali Diaspora and civil society groups in the processes. They also analyse how the Somali Diaspora and civil society in Somalia engage and cooperate to further processes of state-reconstitution in Somalia as well as help the Somali Diaspora adjust in their host nations.

Oluwafemi Bolarfinwa An Evaluation of Plato.s Ideal State

Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Political Theory and the History of Ideas Journal, grade: 1.0, University of Lagos, language: English, abstract: This work is an attempt to undertake an evaluation of Plato's ideal state. It argues the position that there is a need to realign Plato's ideal State to embrace the contemporary realities of today without negating its goal for a transformed society brought about by transformative leadership. Plato posit that the human race will have no respite from evils until those who are really philosophers acquire political power or until, through some divine dispensation, those who rule and have political authority in the cities become real philosophers. Plato came to the conclusion that all existing governments were bad and almost beyond redemption thus he theorized for an ideal State. The ideal state, according to Plato, is composed of three classes. The economic structure of the state is maintained by the merchant class. Security needs are met by the military class, and political leadership is provided by the philosopher-kings.In an attempt to re-evaluate Plato's ideal state, this work re-emphasized the relevance of transformative leadership as a necessary tool for societal good and transformation. It urges for the adoption of the relevant areas of Plato's concept of an ideal State anchored on the prevailing need and realities of the contemporary society.
