Through the reception of diaconate a man becomes a cleric. Canon 277 §1 states: “Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven and therefore are bound to celibacy….” Accordingly, it would seem that clerics have two distinct obligations: sexual continence (no sexual relations) and celibacy (no marriage) with continence presented as the fundamental norm. With the restoration of the permanent diaconate by Paul VI in 1967 and the admission of married men to this order, a fundamental question arises: “Are married deacons, though dispensed from the obligation of celibacy, unless their wife dies, obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence?” This book addresses that question.

If you cannot lead yourself, how can you lead others?» Kraemer identifies self-reflection as the first of four principles that guide leaders to make choices that honor their values and candidly recounts how these principles helped him navigate some of the toughest challenges he faced in his career. Offers a framework for adopting the principles of values-based leadership—self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence, and genuine humility—to lead organizations effectively Based on Kraemer's popular Kellogg MBA course on values-based leadership A recognized expert in values-based leadership, Kraemer is a sought after speaker on the subject Lively and engaging, Kraemer's book comes at a critical time when true leadership in every facet of society is desperately needed.

Development has been on Africaís agenda for a long time but progress has been both varied and limited, partly due to the diverse levelsof the discussions ont he challenges and the interventions for tackling them. Africaís greatest challenge is the uneven development within and between its countries, and the pressing issues of extreme poverty in southern Africa, and the continent as a whole. Poverty causes its victims to suffer social exclusion and political repression. In addition, societies that experience poverty are also mostly under continuous threat of ecological disasters and diseases. All poor people are therefore plagued by loss of freedom and dignity, and are often unable to participate effectively in the political, economic, legal and social processes of their countries. This book focuses on the social and cultural dimensions of development dynamics and, in particular, the role of values in shaping development. Values are at the core of the hopes and aspirations of individuals, communities and societies. The book therefore explains the values that motivate and inform African communities and societies, with a view to facilitating a dialogue about sustainable development in Africa among academics, intellectuals, policy and decisionmakers, and the communities. It also investigates the social and cultural dynamics of development in Africa, as a better alternative to earlier studies that blame African culture for poverty and exclude the people of Africa in their definiti...

The following volume is published on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute for Axiological Research in Vienna - the first European Institute for the advanced philosophical and interdisciplinary study of values - and is divided in two parts. The first one treats specific problems of women's struggle for rights, freedoms, and recognition, and moves successively to thematically broader methodological and hermeneutical approaches of the phenomena of exclusion and the possibilities of social integration, which are discussed in the second part. Although the defended positions of the essays in the present volume are different from those of Habermas, they should be conceived in relation to the main issues of what he calls the "the postmetaphysical age." Hence, the authors ask such core axiological questions as: How do we think today of community, praxis and values in front of the old and new problems of injustice, oppression and exclusion? How should we consider personal and group identity in the contexts of social and cultural diversity, of world view pluralism and incommensurable lifeworlds, lifestyles and values? Moreover, what is the meaning of the key concept of "European values," can it offer a real basis for integration or does it serve rather as a new form of "dictatorship" and exclusion of otherness?

This study evaluates the theory of eco-revelatory landscape design by examining the environmental values of homeowners in Montgomery County, MD, USA who live in subdivisions with eco-revelatory stormwater ponds. Adapting ideas from environmental philosophy and economics, the study uses a survey to operationalize “environmental values” as both a prioritization among the several kinds of value that the non-human environment provides for humans, and as a philosophical orientation about the commensurability of different values. The study also conducts hedonic analysis to examine how homebuyers in these subdivisions valued the ponds in their homebuying decisions. The study concludes that designers of the residential landscape should think less in terms of how to use design to change people’s values, and more in terms of leveraging pre-existing values about nature into good ecological outcomes. Indeed, the findings suggest that leveraging some of the commensurable values of nature (such as attractive amenities) into the protection of the incommensurable values of nature (such as an ecosystem’s intrinsic right to existence) is one of landscape architecture’s highest purposes.

It calls us to search for our own way through the distractions and diversity of an often shallow and divided world. And it challenges us to develop a culture, together, where we can express ourselves courageously and remain genuinely open to the truths and values of others.

This book is an attempt to explore the Igbo values of social justice in terms of social relationships. The philosophical concept of justice is broadened by the Igbo worldview, the core that shows how social relationships are the web of justice, which makes social connectivity indispensable and possible. The principles of these social relationships appear as obvious values of justice among the Igbo people and are examined in the light of Christian ethical values and their relevance explored in forging Christianity in the Igbo land. This book also acknowledges the difficulties involved in inquiring into the Igbo ethical values because of the integration of religious beliefs and ethical conduct and customs. Given the Igbo example of the Igbo-integrated life, justice simply becomes that inner compulsion that motivates the human in his/her relationships with others and with God. Consequently, the traditional Igbo people were able to build a harmonious, peaceful, and social order that ensured social justice in the Igbo communal and social interconnectivity. The author argues that the Igbo example can facilitate the growth of Christianity in the Igbo land.

How do immigrants navigate the stormy waters of the American Society? What qualities or traits can they model and adopt to enable them to achieve their version of the American Dream? Set against the turmoil (i.e., rampant and open racism, sexism and xenophobia) that is plaguing today’s society, Behind the Golden Door chronicles the real-life struggles and triumphs of immigrants to this country. It explores the conflicting beliefs and values of the American National Character and the potential reasons for this confusing tension between what Americans say and think and how they behave. The book profiles the collective voices of immigrants—how they were able to face and overcome the challenges of life in America, how they shaped their version of the good life and how they flourished, despite the deceiving and conflicting messages of a society that values some but not all of its people. The insights and wisdom of ordinary immigrants offer powerful guidelines for action for others who are going through a similar experience. The authors examined and analyzed their diverse stories and personal legends, then sifted through their inspiring narratives to find the golden nuggets that accounted for their success. They then developed a replicable framework that could be adopted by any immigrant attempting to survive the cleavages of race, religion, gender, economic and political power in America.

Anthropologists have been keenly aware of the tension between cultural relativism and absolute norms, and nowhere has this been more acute than with regards to moral values. Can we study the Other's morality without applying our own normative judgments? How do social anthropologists keep both the distance required by science and the empathy required for the analysis of lived experiences? The plurality of moralities has not received an explicit and focused attention until recently, when accelerated globalization often resulted in the collision of different value systems. Observing, describing and assessing values cross-culturally, the authors propose various methodological approaches to the study of moralities, illustrated with rich ethnographic accounts, thus offering a valuable guide for students of anthropology, sociology and cultural studies and for professionals concerned with the empirical and cross-cultural study of values.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: This enquiry deals with the shortcomings of rational choice theory in explaining voter turnout as a rational - i.e. efficient in terms of costs and benefits - act. It is argued that intrinsic benefits, i.e. benefits that accrue to the citizen independent of an election outcome, should provide a proper explanatory potential if one can account for different implications of these benefits for different voters. The rationale should hold for benefits in general, though. Underlying coherent priorities in the form of political values (materialism vs. postmaterialism) are used to differentiate voters and to probe for differing impacts of determinants of voter turnout depending on different underlying values. The thesis is that the impacts of these determinants differ for different values. The tested determinants, taken from the literature, are appreciation of democracy, social norms, party identification and material resources. Hypotheses about impacts are formulated on the basis of the theory of political values for every determinant and tested by means of logistic regression employing data from German election studies. Whereas the impacts of social norms and material resources vary by underlying values, the results for appreciation of democracy and party identification remain inclusive.

Sandys gives what he describes as a politically incorrect examination of political philosophy and the socialist transformation of the West. He's critical of the present Western political arrangement and, after analyzing the different systems, offers recommendations as to the methods of solving the readily apparent impasse. Topics include: the screenplay of the Velvet Revolution;European federalism under German leadership;Russia's newly found old identity;a critique of democracy;a critique of socialism;a critique of modern conservatism; anddeteriorating social values. The Waning of the West: An Inconvenient Truism delivers Sandys' thoughts on the rejection of liberal democracy and the condemnation of the Western elite. It goes on to outline a new system termed "the essential option" that has the manners, values, and qualities associated with meritorious aristocracy and is intended to gently steer Western culture and politics onto a more sustainable course.

A volume in Evaluation and SocietySeries Editors, Jennifer C. Greene, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignand Stewart I. Donaldson, Claremont Graduate UniversityIn this book, Ernie House reframes how we think about evaluation by reconsidering three keyconcepts of values, biases, and practical wisdom. The first part of the book reconstructs coreevaluation concepts, with a focus on the origins of our values and biases. The second partexplores how we handle values and biases in practice, and the third shows how we learn practicalwisdom and use it in evaluations.Value is the central concept in this volume, yet it's a fuzzy concept. In Part I, Ernie clarifies theconcept of value by addressing basic questions: What are values? Where do they come from? Why do we have them? Why is our conception so confused? How do we handle values in evaluations? In Part II, another central concept is added, that of biases. Prominent evaluation frameworkshave focused on biases, including Campbell and Stanley's (1963) framework for validatingcausal inferences and Scriven's (1972) conception of objectivity, which is achieved by correcting for biases in general. In addition, research on thought processes has made progress by focusing on cognitive biases (Kahneman, 2011). Even so, through a case example,Ernie demonstrates that the concept of biases is under-appreciated and not well engaged in evaluation practice. The third important concept, featured in Part III, is practical wisdom, which...

Strategic Communication for Non-Profit Organisations. Challenges and Alternative Approaches

Communication in the public sphere as well as within organizational contexts has attracted the interest of researchers over the past century. Current forms of citizen engagement and community development, partly enabled through digital communication, have further enhanced the visibility and relevance of non-profit communication. These are performed by the civil society, which is 'the organized expression of the values and interests of society' (Castells, 2008) in the public sphere. Non-profit communication feeds the public sphere as 'the discursive processes in a complex network of persons, institutionalized associations and organizations, ' whereas those 'discourses are a civilized way of disagreeing openly about essential matters of common concern' (Jensen, 2002).Despite the relevance in the public sphere, non-profit communication was never properly defined within communication research. The aim of the present book is to offer an overview and report on Strategic Communication for Non-Profit-Organisations and the Challenges and Alternative Approaches. Considering the assumption that key principle of strategic communication is the achievement of organisational goals, the majority of research developed in the field has used business environments to develop theories, models, empirical insights and case studies. Here, we make a step on the proposal of new approaches that are centred on the concept of non-profit in various dimensions and from various persp...

Religion and theology became an occult science for many; and belief in the values of life that religions proclaim turned to be useless and void. The handing on of the faith' has become a deep crisis and a problematic today and has turned to be a burning issue for the contemporary Church. What is necessary in the contemporary culture is to develop a counter-culture that passionately understands the love of God and sharing it passionately and joyfully with the fellow humans and the world around us. We need a counter-culture of sharing the truth and love which is God. Pope Francis' message is none other than this. He exhorts for a missionary renewal in the Church and to have a new theological outlook that leads the Church to be a Church of the poor - a counter culture of compassionate and tender love. When it comes to India, the Church, a minority in number, faces a lot of challenges in its practice and proclamation of faith. Globalization and the new economic reforms badly affected the Indian culture which is turning to be secular, as well as fundamentalist. With a weak presence in many areas the Church in India is struggling to make its presence felt in the nation. Here the author is making an attempt to understand the joyful sharing of the Gospel in the Indian context in the light of the first two documents of Pope Francis. The author discusses the challenges and ways to face the challenges to be truthful by being in love and faith. It will provide a clear understanding...

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: distinction, Charles Darwin University, language: English, abstract: The culture we are born into shapes the way we look at the world. Culture, this work claims, is man-made and tends, on the one hand, to secure the predominant social practises, its function is to stabilise the existing order; on the other hand, it is an expression of what its members aspire to be. The notions of 'Orientalism' (how the West sees the East) and 'Asian values' (how Asia sees herself) are explored before criteria such as rationality, justice, democracy, individual liberty, separation of church and state, and tolerance, that are generally perceived as European, but also as Western, are examined. Despite them having the same roots, European and Western values vary not inconsiderably because they are interpreted (and practised) not in the same way in Europe and in the US. The reason (also for the differences between Eastern and Western values), it is claimed, lies in the politics of power: differences in values are emphasised and thus enforced for political purposes. Furthermore, cultural values, it is argued, are not 'naturally' there, they are constructed ideologies and need to be put back in their place for it is our natural commonalities that (should) essentially matter.

'Poetics of Contemporary Dance' is a major reference work originally published in French. Its author, historian and critic Laurence Louppe, is renowned for her perception and insight. Drawing on the whole practical and theoretical heritage of modern dance and its pre-cursors and including discussion of works up to and including the 1980s, Louppe brilliantly and eruditely reviews the main "tools" of contemporary dance creation and thought: the body, weight, space, time, flow, breath, style and composition. She also weaves through her analysis a remarkable vision of the broader historical and philosophical concerns and challenges specific to this art and its defining values. Rather than taking an objective, cognitive approach to her role as observer and critic, Louppe writes from an intimate place of attention to all of the contemporary dancer's resources and practices: from the 'pre-movement' when stylistic values are born invisibly in bodies, to the moment and location of performance and the encounter with a public. Thus her writing aims at touching as much as informing the reader. Poetics of Contemporary Dance is both a call and a testament to contemporary dance literacy.

What is Values-Based Leadership? How does one become a Values-Based Leader? Why Value-Based Leadership? Certainly these are critical questions. It is now widelyrecognized that effective leaders, from Martin Luther King through political leaders andcorporate executives, have a foundation of values that guide their decision-making, andindeed, their life. However, up to this point there has not been a clear definition of Values-BasedLeadership, nor has there been a method for developing Values-Based Leaders. Thisbook addresses these issues by defining Values-Based Leadership; by explaining whythis form of leadership leads to effective groups, families and organizations; and byproviding a process for helping one discover both their life values and their leadershipvalues.Presented in an interesting, and easy-to-read "story format," the book traces the life ofthe CEO of a major medical supply company who has "burned out" as a leader, andwho blames others for his problems. After being told very bluntly by a former mentor that he is the problem, not others, theCEO seeks out the help of an executive coach. Working with the coach he goes through a process by which he rediscovershis purpose in life, as well as his life and leadership values. And through the process he renews his enthusiasm andeffectiveness as a leader. The format of the book allows the reader to go through the same step-by-step discovery process asdoes the central figure in the book, and to move toward bec...

From that aspect, capitalism does not seem to appear that ignoring and barbarous but shows us that in deed that human values and ethical standards are anchored in the acting of huge, successful multinational concerns. The role of values in that case is crucial as they affect our everyday life. Everything we do and the way we think is guided by values which we got communicated from our families, people that seem to be important for us or from institutions that accompanied us for a period of our life.
