This edited book is a comparative study on teacher education across ten major Englishspeakingregions of the world (USA, English Canada, England and Wales, Scotland,Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand). The focus onindividual regions is reflective of a comparative approach with a long tradition goingback to the turn of the twentieth century. This approach is still valid at the present time asit provides one of the best ways of initially structuring our understanding of teachereducation at the macro level in order to facilitate communication of the situation crossnationallyand prepare the way for higher levels of analyses. To this end, the book hastwelve chapters: An introductory chapter details the focus of the book. This is followedby a chapter on each of the ten regions. Each of these chapters, written by an expert in thefield:focuses on general trends in teacher education rather than on any specific aspect of it;focuses primarily on pre-service teacher education at the primary and post-primary levels, although some referenceis also made to continuing professional development;strikes a balance between past, present and future trends;deals broadly with access to, the processes involved in, and the structure of, teacher education;has a unique structure rather than one based upon a formulaic approach. In the final chapter major themes are distilled from the case studies. It also outlines how the book furthers understanding ofteacher education inte...

Quality education is the process and system of education for all around development. Quality education is not absolute. It is relative in respect of space and time. Education being a man-making process, the most important aspect of education to process developments oriented man, equipped with necessary knowledge, skill and aptitude to lead a healthy productive and useful life in the society. Education must inflate in man and woman a scientific attitude and initiation, resourcefulness and amiable temperament. Obviously two priorities emerge out in the present educational situation in India-which are (1) Liquidation of illiteracy through (A) Universalization of Primary Education and (B) Rapid and intensive Expansion of Adult-Education and (II) Reorientation and Reconstruction of secondary and Higher Education. Measurement in content analysis is of three types, classification (or categorization). Direction and counting (quantification). The first two were discussed in earlier chapter, counting also deserves a chapter of its own, for counting provides the data for statistical manipulation, for tables (in various classifications).

Universalization of elementary education cannot be realised without enabling the girl-child to access and retention of schools. Today participation of girls is considerably lower than that of boys and drop-out rates are invariably much higher. Education and economic development are not only interrelated but one precedes the other. Education became an engine searching for economic development. A rupee invested in education of the society leads more returns and production and productivities than a rupee invested in physical assets. The basic problem of most of the underdeveloped countries is not poverty of natural resources but the underdevelopment of their human resources. Hence, their first task must be to build up their human capital through the development of education. India is no exception in this mater. The present work concentrates on economic development of the state of Andhra Pradesh through education.

Teachers of religious education experience the challenge of secularization and diversity in the classroom. Schools rooted in the Christian tradition wonder how they can adapt religious education to an increasing plurality in worldviews. How can worldview education contribute to the identity development of children and at the same express the identity of the school? Learning for Life introduces a hermeneutical-communicative model that helps teachers to reflect on their goals, didactical roles, religious sources and students' abilities. Teachers invite students to search for meaning in all kinds of religious and non-religious sources, to exchange views with each other in a respectful way and to respond individually using imagination as a powerful learning tool. Learning for Life explains the model, provides pedagogical backgrounds and shows results from research at nine primary schools in the Netherlands. Hermeneutical-communicative learning appears to be an inspiring perspective for both private and public education. ""Learning for Life provides a research-tested model for teaching religion and worldview to children. Drawing on the talents of teachers, the approach provides for a lively, holistic, and critical approach to assist children to develop their convictions in the community of the class. It analyses education structure and syllabus, learners’ own music, teacher training and resources. A comparative analysis of arts education in other countries was conducted. Findings reveal the mission of the MoES as to support, guide, coordinate, regulate and promote education. It acknowledges locally trained music teachers perceived as having low teaching efficacy because of inadequate training. Pupil’s response to class music is influenced by their ‘own music’. Results offer insights for music education’s future role, nature and character. Insufficient funding, limited content and lack of resources are factors inhibiting the development of music education in Uganda. The study recommends directions and a vision for music education if it is to survive and transform itself into an autonomous player in the education dispensation.

Although Physical Education (PE) offers potential solutions to many chronic health issues, literature suggests that numerous students have been “turned off” to physical activity because of negative PE experiences. Considering that the ultimate goal of PE is the realization of a physically fit society and that the majority of PE teacher education students come from athletic backgrounds, a major challenge of PE teacher education programs should be converting these athletic and competitive pre-service teachers into teachers of all children. An Empathetic Approach to Physical Education Teacher Education examines effects of an affective-focused educational intervention on college-level physical education teacher education students. A quantitative pre-post quasi-experimental design with control group measured changes in pre-existing empathy levels among participants. Significant findings were demonstrated in experimental groups after a semester-long educational intervention. Analysis of reflective essays suggested a change in experimental subjects’ personal view of PE toward an empathetic approach. Study strengths, weaknesses, and implications for future research are discussed.

This book interrogates the contemporary practice of Integrating Islamic and secular education among Muslim dominated areas in Kenya. Integration of Islamic and secular education is a popular phenomenon in Garissa sub-county as a response to demand for Islamic education to satisfy religious needs and demand. The high Muslim population in Garissa sub-county was an overarching driver of demand for integrated education. Muslim parents wanted their children to attain both secular and Islamic education. Parents sought integrated education to reduce the amount of time their children spent moving between three institutions: primary school, madrassa and Duksi from which they sought both secular and Islamic education. The school in this study adapted a bi-functional model of integration where both a madrassa providing Islamic education and a primary school providing secular education co-existed as one institution but operating independently. However, secular dominated Islamic education in this arrangement hence the need for a balanced curriculum that would give adequate attention to both religious and secular education so as to adequately cater for needs of both types education.

As education is of paramount importance to the overall development of any nation, it has found that the task of providing education to all who need it is an exceptional one. Since education costs money, many people in developing countries are unable to acquire quality education. In Ethiopia for example, the responsibility of providing education has for long been dominated by governments. In a situation where it has become very clear that government is unable to sustain continuous provision of adequate and high quality education, there can be no better option than to open the floodgate to private individuals and organizations in order to complement government efforts in education provision. The primary aim of this book is to identify the challenges that private higher education institutions (PHEIs) face to provide quality education. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods incorporating a case study approach. PHEIs from Ethiopia are used as a case study. This study finds that lack of clear quality standards, government incentives, skilled human capital, books, technology, fund, and other facilities are major factors that prevent PHEIs from proving quality education.

From Parker Palmer, best-selling author of The Courage to Teach, and Arthur Zajonc, professor of physics at Amherst College and director of the academic program of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, comes this call to revisit the roots and reclaim the vision of higher education. The Heart of Higher Education proposes an approach to teaching and learning that honors the whole human being—mind, heart, and spirit—an essential integration if we hope to address the complex issues of our time. The book offers a rich interplay of analysis, theory, and proposals for action from two educators and writers who have contributed to developing the field of integrative education over the past few decades. Presents Parker Palmer’s powerful response to critics of holistic learning and Arthur Zajonc’s elucidation of the relationship between science, the humanities, and the contemplative traditions Explores ways to take steps toward making colleges and universities places that awaken the deepest potential in students, faculty, and staff Offers a practical approach to fostering renewal in higher education through collegiality and conversation The Heart of Higher Education is for all who are new to the field of holistic education, all who want to deepen their understanding of its challenges, and all who want to practice and promote this vital approach to teaching and learning on their campuses.

The professional development programme (PDP) drew for its design on programmes recommended for their success in other contexts, but was unique for its innovatory combination of specific forms of content (‘task-based learning’) and process (a ‘coaching approach’), and for its adaptation to the needs of EFL primary school teachers in Thailand. Task-based learning (TBL) was recommended in the literature for its success in helping teachers to focus on student learning, and providing explicit practices to implement the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT) as required by the new curriculum. A coaching approach was claimed to assist teachers by clearly explaining theoretical concepts and their practical implementation at the classroom level, simplifying the steps for implementation in the classroom context and supporting teachers through the process of change.

Whereas liberal arts and sciences education arguably has European roots, European universities have evolved over the last century to become advanced research institutions, mainly offering academic training in specialized disciplines. The Bologna process, started by the European Union in the late nineties, encouraged European institutions of higher education to broaden their curricula and to commit to undergraduate education with increased vigor. One of the results is that Europe is currently witnessing a proliferation of liberal arts and sciences colleges and broad bachelor degrees. This edited volume fills a gap in the literature by providing reflections on the recent developments in Europe with regard to higher education in the liberal arts and sciences. The first section includes reflections from either side of the Atlantic about the nature and aims of liberal arts and sciences education and the way in which it takes shape, or should take shape in European institutions of higher learning. The edited volume takes as a distinct approach to liberal arts and sciences education by focusing on the unique way in which core texts - i.e. classic texts from philosophical, historical, literary or cultural traditions involving "the best that has been written" - meet the challenges of modern higher education in general and in Europe in particular. This approach is manifested explicitly in the second section that focuses on how specific core texts promote the goals of liberal ar...

In the 21st century, higher education faces a number of challenges: We need to prepare students for the complexities of a highly interconnected world so that they can act as responsible citizens within a global society as change agents. Transnational collaboration projects offer unique opportunities for their education. They prepare students to work towards social change across cultural and geographical boundaries and to move beyond the distinction between global and local. Merging global and local means merging local learning, engagement, and impact with global communication, collaboration, and knowledge production. The mix of global and local- glocal- characterizes our approach to transnational collaboration and our teaching and learning model. We introduce a glocal curriculum that aims to foster education in fields as diverse as higher education for sustainable development, e.g. global health, the humanities, philosophy. The glocal curriculum is based on experiences from the "Global Classroom: Liberal Arts Education in the 21st Century", a teaching and research project of Leuphana University Lüneburg (Germany) and Arizona State University (USA). In this Handbook we present resources and reflections that we developed to support the education of change agents who are willing to critically and creatively contribute to sustainability transformations. The book covers three different stages, from (i) envisioning the glocal curriculum and its design to (ii) implementing an...

The entrenchment of this technology in everyday life necessitates a critical examination of the roles it can play in education. A varied cross-section of case studies in mobile education was selected and analyzed with the primary aim of providing a critical landscape of mobile education and the secondary aim of extrapolating frameworks from usage patterns. Exemplar case studies were reviewed for insight into mobile education and synthesized into a framework using meta-ethnography. The framework consists of three usage categories: Accessing Learning, Enhancing Learning, and Managing Learning.
