Regional imbalance is a ubiquitous phenomenon in both developed and developing economies. But in the latter it is more acute and glaring. It is being increasingly recognized, both on theoretical and empirical grounds, and experiences of the developing countries shows that at least in the initial stages of economic development, considerable regional imbalances in development arises. Reservation have, however, been expressed about the need to take deliberate policy measures to remove these increasing regional disparities in the levels of living. Regional disparity exists in agricultural development in Assam, North East India. The present study measures the extent of regional disparities in agricultural development in Assam and examines the factors responsible for them. This book may help researcher in social sciences to have an idea about regional disparities and to use appropriate tools to quantify such disparities. This book may also help policy-makers to adopt area specific agricultural development strategy so as to secure regional balance in agricultural development and boost up the pace of agricultural and economic development.

This book covers policy proposals and interim contracts, assesses the positions of various Iraqi political actors and examines the potential significance for international foreign policy goals in Iraq. Despite a lack of progress in reaching agreements on the hydro-carbon sector and revenue sharing legislation to set new conditions for the management of the country's significant oil and gas resources, development in Iraq's oil and gas sector is moving forward. The passage of the oil and gas sector framework and revenue sharing legislation will be seen as significant milestones by International governments and International Oil Companies (IOC´s). This would provide evidence of the Iraqi government's dedication to promoting political reconciliation and providing a solid foundation for long term economic development in Iraq. Interim revenue sharing mechanisms have been introduced due to the lack of new legislation. Additionally, both the Federal Government (the Federal Oil Ministry-MoO) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) (the Regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy) have made oil and gas development deals with foreign firms. The MoO is working with existing regulation from the previous political and administrational regime, while the Regional Ministry of Resource and Energy Kurdistan-Iraq has designed its own laws and regulations, which the Federal Government has not yet recognized. There is wide recognition among Iraqis of the importance of oil and...

But China is only the last step in an array of development countries from East / Southeast Asian region. After the fast development of Japan after World War II, the so called tiger countries , South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, highlight from the 60s on with high rates of economic growth and later the second generation of tiger countries also (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesian and Thailand). And now China!A country of 9.5 Million square mile can't growth on whole with the same rate. The effect is an increase in the disparity of regional incomes and still increase with the boost at the rates of economic growth. But what are the reasons for the regional differences in economic growth and the regional disparity. One reason could be the preferential policies in the eastern regions. These policies are specially prepared to attract foreign companies. A second reason, that is current discuss in the scientific world, could the geographical characteristics. Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, , course: LLM in International Trade, Investment and Business Law in Africa, language: English, abstract: It has been established that African stock markets are confronted with a multitude of problems which include, inadequate liquidity, low capitalisation, few market participants, a small number of listed companies and low trading volumes. As a result, their broader economic impact has so far been limited. The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) stock markets with the exception of South Africa are small, both in terms of the number of listed companies and market capitalisation, and they display considerable illiquidity. In general, the SADC region has shallow and underdeveloped financial markets. Their development has been hampered by a number of factors which include; political and economic uncertainty, fiscal dominance, weak judicial institutions, limited investment opportunities in the private sector, technological constraints, and the shortage of skilled personnel with expertise in banking and finance. It is contended that all these problems could be eased through regional financial integration. The integration of African stock markets and the introduction of regional stock exchanges will promote cross-border listings and thus stimulate increased liquidity across markets. Thus, it is suggested that the integration of SADC's stock markets and the creation of a regional stock exc...

Document from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: Currently in India we are observing that the number of labours are shifting from agriculture sector to other sectors of economy. The labour transition occurs due to several reasons one of the main reason is that the fixed wage rate in other sectors as compared to agriculture sector. In this context the Lewis model provides a good framework for explaining the ways in which the fruits of economic development are spread. Lewis divided developing economy into two sectors: subsistence and capital sector. He assumed that the subsistence sector was characterised by surplus labour and low real wages whereas capital sector characterised by capital intensive production and higher real wages. If we transfer excess labour from agriculture to capital sector it will not affect the production and productivity of subsistence sector and it will increase the production in capital sector which will help in development of economy. Lewis' model is mainly applicable surplus labour countries. If we take the example of China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam which have evidenced the Lewis model we can compare the India with those countries .China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam were gone through enormous labour transition which helped in the development of economy of the respective countries. I thereby focus on the credit market. It is shown that various external and internal factors have led to a credit market development on the supply-side that is not conducive to real sector growth. In particular, the period before the Lebanese civil war is characterised by funds flowing in from other Arab countries, which were not channelled into domestic long term investment but accrued to the trade and services sector or went abroad. Throughout the war and afterwards the share of the private sector in total credit declined substantially as the government crowded out private demand. It is concluded that only a shift of policy with a clear focus on the real sector's needs can bring about the required economic development.

Scientific Study from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, , language: English, abstract: During the last period, innovation represented the core topic of a wide number of studies and analyses due to the potential impact it could have on the development level of a country or a region. This aspect is relatively easy to explain: innovation represents an important source of regional/national competitiveness, a modern factor of growth and economic resilience, but also the fundamental objective of the current programming period and of the Europe 2020 Strategy.According to theory, innovation is a process that takes place predominantly at micro-economic level. Still, its approach at regional level gains increasingly more room within economic approaches starting from the premise that innovative performances of a company depend directly and to a large share on the endogenous local potential, but also on a combination of factors of influence, determined by the specifics and conditions of the area. The study intends to analyse from the theoretical and practical viewpoint the role of the innovation process within economic development and growth at regional and national level.

Industrialization is the central dynamic force for most countries. It has been a key growth and development objective of India's planned economy, with the focus on heavy investments made in this sector. Labour productivity is highest in manufacturing industries; this has assisted in raising national income at a faster pace. It is a pre-condition for the development all economic sectors including agriculture. The importance of industrialization in economic development is crucial for a growing economy with a larger population like India. Progress and prosperity through industrialization have been a long term strategy for the Indian government, communities, and businesses. Being reliant on agriculture and having a large population base has made India. Industrialization enables India to utilize its scarce resources optimally, diversify the economic base, raise the living standard of people, and thus attain the balanced regional development through fiscal incentives and subsidies concessional finance for industrially backward regions.Tamil Nadu is a highly industrialized State but this development has taken place only in a few districts.

The thesis concentrates on strategic market planning of local economic development programs. It is presented how to make use of local competitive advantages by useful bundling of incentives. The notion of marketing and governing places is combined and shall offer the reader a new perspective of meeting regional economic objectives for places. This thesis is divided into two parts: a theoretical part (where industrial incentives are presented and Kotler’s concept is explained and criticized) and an empirical part (where regional marketing is applied and tested for effectiveness). First, it will be defined what regional marketing is and what forms of incentives are considered. Then it will be presented how marketing strategies can be organized in a local environment, followed by a discussion how companies make location decisions. In the last chapter of the first part, a critical discussion of the regional marketing approach is presented. In the second part, an emphasis will be put on the case study; a location (Orange County, California, USA) where economic development based on marketing planning came to work. With a view to the situation and implications analyzed in the case study, it will be tried to scrutinize effectiveness and usefulness of economic deve...

This is why the economists try to find new solutions and approaches, in order to support the economic recovery and to continue the economic sustainable development. Maybe the best solution is the regional approach. There are a lot of definitions of the regions and more and more approaches of them. The present book realizes a synthesis of those approaches as a first step to a deeper analysis of the regional socioeconomic development. A distinct part of the book analyses the most important regional models used by the decision makers in order to support their political interventions. Moreover, the author propose new static and dynamic regional models able to offer new possibilities of analysis to the decision makers. Last but not the least, the book realizes dynamic comparative analyses between EU28 Member States. The analysis and the conclusions of every chapter are supported by the latest official statistic data, pertinent diagrams and tables.

Over the past 2 decades, the global system has been subject to a range of forces which have reconfigured relationships among individuals, organizations, and nation-states. As an aspect of that changing structure and rising interdependence, many security challenges which confront today's strategic leaders are grounded in concerns about economic, social, and environmental sustainability, and, in turn, about political stability. Furthermore, with increasing frequency, many observers are concluding that those types of challenges cannot be addressed by stakeholders from any single sector. That insight has prompted calls for collaborative efforts involving citizen groups; for-profit and not-for-profit companies; local, regional, and national governments; and intergovernmental organizations.

In the years of the partial reform China demonstrated the high rate of economic growth, large inflow of Foreign Direct Investments and improvement of the performance of its state sector, while Russian economy experienced the prolonged and severe economic downturn with falling industrial production rate and hyperinflation.

The study reveals that meso-institutions such as sector-based and territorial ones were catalysts for the growth and development of SMEs. However, the use of sector-based institutions such as business associations to reach the SMEs led to the exclusion of a greater number of SMEs. It confirms that improved business environment; access to credit,BDS and membership of business associations correlate with higher productivity and strong enterprise performance. Micro-level enterprise strategies and meso-level interventions were not sufficient to transform SMEs. It stresses influences from the broader regulatory environment for the transformation of SMEs and even proper functioning of meso-institutions. It has been confirmed that the development of less endowed localities depends on their development potential and accessibility to markets. The study finds that these drivers govern the economic growth and development process and generate externalities

The three regional economic communities (RECs) in Eastern and Southern Africa are the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Together, they have recognised the need to work towards regional cooperation aimed at the eventual creation of a single regional economic community or Tripartite Free Trade Agreement (TFTA). This will replace the existent RECs in Eastern and Southern Africa to which the member states of these two regions have multiple membership. The TFTA region comprises a total of 27 member states which have a combined population of 527 million people and a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of USD 624 billion. These statistics translate into a potential regional economic powerhouse for Eastern and Southern Africa. One of the major goals of the TFTA is to harmonise trade arrangements among the three RECs, improve the movement of goods and persons within the single integrated region, facilitate the joint implementation of regional infrastructure projects and enhance co-operation of member states. This is a laudable initiative by the member states of the three RECs and it is recognised that regional integration is the first step towards integration into a multilateral trading system. For the TFTA member states, it is crucial that there is an awareness to move towards a review of domestic customs legislation and policy and to develop regional, supranational legislat...

Although the EU is growing ever closer as a single economic entity, the difference in wealth and economic power among its member nations - from Germany and France to Romania and Bulgaria - is still enormous. This is despite the European Union's continuous efforts to reduce welfare differences between its member states since its foundation in 1958: The long-term objective of the EU is a convergence of income and GDP per capita levels within the entire Union. This policy is known as European cohesion policy, which nowadays accounts for more than one third of the EU's total budget. The vast financial importance of the cohesion policy naturally begs two questions: Are structural funds effective in promoting economic growth? And if so, do they promote income and welfare convergence within the EU? Yet most studies so far have merely yielded fragmented results, as they only focus on single EU member states, or consist of data for short time periods. In contrast, this study captures long-term effects of structural funds in the recent past and delivers accurate and meaningful empirical results. It focuses on data for the European Regional Development Fund since this is the most important item of cohesion policy which financially supports projects that aim to foster convergence directly. In this book:- European cohesion policy; - structural funds; - European Regional Development Fund; - economic convergence; - Solow-Model; - growth theory

This book is an economic and philosophical discourse on sustainable economic development inspired by Ujamaa and the philosophy of self-reliance advocated by Julius Nyerere as a policy towards social and economic development. The book explores human empowerment as a means to sustainable economic development. It argues that human empowerment in developing countries can build on Nyerere's approach to development founded on community participation. However, self-reliance is not possible without the ability to build sustainable development and-, self-reliance philosophy and efforts towards development in their current forms have lacked the ability to intensify people's capability. Human empowerment is needed to produce people with vision, who can reflect on situations, initiate relevant and responsible action, and thereby transform situations for the common good. The empowerment I recommend is endowed on education, entrepreneurship and civil societies. Building on Amartya Sen's philosophy of the capability approach to development, empowerment will provide relevant solution for developing countries to break away from economic dependency and the vicious cycle of poverty.

Development economics entail all the aspects of the development process especially meant for the developing countries to overcome the challenges that impede development. This can be through education, education and man power development, restructuring market incentives, incorporating favorable social and political approaches and practices among other factors.Human beings however need streamlined social and economic systems that are able to achieve development through major changes in social structures, national institutions, cultures and attitudes as well as eradication of poverty, reduction of income inequality and acceleration of economic growth. The developing world needs a multi-disciplinary approach and ideas so as to come out of the economic backward situation. Micheal, P describes that because of heterogeneity of the developing world, and the complexity of the development process, development economics must be eclectic, attempting to combine relevant concepts and theories from traditional economics analysis along with new models and broader multi-disciplinary approaches from historical and co temporally development experience of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Debraj Ray puts it that development economics studies economics of the developing world and has made excellent use of economic theory, econometrics, anthropology, sociology, political science, biology and demography. It needs a lot more dimensional approach to understand it.

This book analyzes the factors that affected the development of the banking sector in Latin America from 1850 to 1930. One of the most striking features of Latin America during this period was the very limited extent of banking development. Perhaps the most common explanation for some Latin American countries is that restrictive bank laws established high barriers to entry and discouraged the formation of banks and the provision of banking services. In this book, however, I show that liberal bank laws did not necessarily lead to highly developed banking systems, and that a low demand for banking services was a significant cause for the stunted development of the banking sector in most of Latin America during this era. Using annual data for seven Latin American countries for this period, I find that the long-run supply of banking services largely responded to changes in the demand for banking services. Country-case studies for Argentina and Peru strongly support these findings. In these two countries, the banking sector responded to the demand for banking sector by opening bank offices and providing banking services in response to positive demand shocks.

This work sets out to examine the relationship between the Nigerian Capital Market and economic development of Nigeria from 1987 to 2006. Thus, the performance of the Nigerian Capital Market indicators as they affect the GDP growth rate and human development index in Nigeria was examined. Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The evaluation technique includes t-statistics, R squared, adjusted R squared, Durbin Watson test, standard error test and the f-statistics. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-à-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development.

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This thesis tries to examine the structures, activities, changes and spatial impacts of economic development in Scotland. Looking at the Scottish economy it has to be considered that Scotland is both an integrated part of the UK and the UK economy and a peripheral region within the UK. Therefore Scotland does not have an economy of its own, but the distinctiveness of the region in terms of location, history and recent political devel-opments justifies a closer examination of the matter. Scotland is in many aspects a very heterogeneous region. This is in particular true for the economic structure and a focus on one region cannot be representative. Edinburgh is an exceptionally prosperous region, not only in Scottish terms. However this prosperity and activity in economic development makes Edinburgh an interesting subject for examination. Thus the focus of this thesis lies on the developments in Edinburgh. Economic development is certainly influenced by a vast number of factors and it is impossible to take all of them into account. Within this thesis the emphasis lies on governmental influence on the developments. However European development measures are not considered. Accordingly the thesis aims to look at the ways the promotion of economic development is carried out in Scotland and tries to assess the measures on the background of the distinctiveness of Scotland and Edinburgh. Thus in the first chapter the thesis takes a look at Scotland as a who...

Authors of this research analyse transition to multipolarity as a way to secure sustainable dynamic development and overcoming of the negative trends observed recently in the global community. Authors believe that multipolarity represents a combination of political and economic factors and in the world of globalisation it is the economy where new poles / concentration centres for political interests, economic relationship and fair trade are formed. Multipolarity requires elimination of confrontation between such poles / centres based on armaments race and extensive use of military strategies for political and economic purposes. Authors analyse: unipolarity in the world of globalisation; possibilities of return to bipolarity and multipolarity given the growing number of entities subject to international law and loss of territorial integrity by some states; regionalisation and its main tools and methods (strategic partnership and regional integration) for transition to multipolarity (by analysing how these methods function in specific regional agreements); role of the Russian economic policy in today's environment for gradual and ongoing development of national economy in the global multipolar economic system; monetary and financial aspects of incentives programmes related to transition to multipolarity and sustainable operation of the world's monetary system. This research is recommended for the use by government bodies and scientific and research institutes, and also for education of undergraduate and post-graduate students majoring in Economics and for additional training of government officials. Dear readers, we hope that the range of aspects we research in this book will let you share our point of view and apply the proposed solutions and concepts in your work.

Even though the Cherokee Nation and the Australian Aborigines share similar historical backgrounds with regard to a long lasting mistreatment by their prevailing governments, the Cherokee Nation, in contrast to the Australian Aborigines, has been and continues to experience a more successful economic development. This paper analyzes the reasons underlying this contrast. For that, the historical background of the Australian Aborigines and the Cherokee Nation is examined and compared. Since both of them were mistreated by their prevailing governments, their historical backgrounds are compared and the consequences of the mistreatment are applied to their contemporary economic situations. After that, the contemporary economic situations of the two peoples are compared, whereat the distinction between the Cherokee Nation's economic success and the Aborigine's economic failure becomes apparent. Finally, the reasons for the different economic development are investigated and in how far the affected peoples or even their governments, as in the case of the Australian Aborigines, are responsible for this difference. It becomes a more and more crucial factor for growth and competitiveness in Europe as well as worldwide. Dependable energy services at reasonable prices for business and household customers are essential elements for the economic and social development in the European Union (EU). In this context, a well-functioning Single European Market (SEM) is Europe's key to meet today's three main challenges in the energy sector: competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply. As a matter of fact, the way towards a SEM for energy is long and complex. A multitude of aspects play important roles. Outlining all of them would go far beyond the scope of this work. In consequence, this paper focuses on electricity only, leaving out the gas sector. Moreover, emphasis is put on the fundamental EU legislation and the development of the Regional Initiatives as a means to facilitate market integration. Topics of equal importance such as the technical requirements and prerequisites for the general market design had to be excluded from this composition.

A world model: economies, trade, migration, security and development aid. This bookprovides the analytical capability to understand and explore the dynamics of globalisation. It is anchored in economic input-output models of over 200 countries and their relationships through trade, migration, security and development aid. The tools of complexity science are brought to bear and mathematical and computer models are developed both for the elements and for an integrated whole. Models are developed at a variety of scales ranging from the global and international trade through a European model of inter-sub-regional migration to piracy in the Gulf and the London riots of 2011. The models embrace the changing technology of international shipping, the impacts of migration on economic development along with changing patterns of military expenditure and development aid. A unique contribution is the level of spatial disaggregation which presents each of 200+ countries and their mutual interdependencies – along with some finer scale analyses of cities and regions. This is the first global model which offers this depth of detail with fully work-out models, these provide tools for policy making at national, European and global scales. Global dynamics: Presents in depth models of global dynamics. Provides a world economic model of 200+ countries and their interactions through trade, migration, security and development aid. Provides pointers to the deployment of analytical capability through modelling in policy development. Features a variety of models that constitute a formidable toolkit for analysis and policy development. Offers a demonstration of the practicalities of complexity science concepts. This book is for practitioners and policy analysts as well as those interested in mathematical model building and complexity science as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level students.

The objective of this study is to estimate inflation threshold and examine its impact on the inflation-growth nexus in selected African regional economic communities. While a number of empirical studies exist in this area for developing countries, they bundle up countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America which do not have the same inflation experiences. This study therefore focuses on Africa. However, since African regional groupings themselves have different inflation experiences, non-linearity in the relationship between inflation and growth is explored within each grouping separately. The study uses dynamic panel threshold modeling recently suggested by Kremer et al. (2013) which extends the non-dynamic panel threshold model of Hansen (1999) and the cross-sectional threshold model of Caner and Hansen (2004). The results indicate that the estimated inflation threshold is different across the regional economic communities. Nonlinearity in inflation-growth nexus seems to hold in CEMAC, COMESA and SADC while it is questioned in WAEMU and WAMZ. For CEMAC, COMESA and SADC, the findings indicate that inflation above the threshold is harmful to growth. Some correlations are established in this study but further analysis is needed to suggest a policy.

Data were collected through questionnaires, in depth interviews and document analysis and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 13. The study revealed that tourism was negatively affected by the economic crisis. It is concluded that the economic crisis impacted on tourism viability as evidenced by the low volumes of tourists. Recommendations drawn from this research are that there is need by government to develop tourism - related sectors that include transport, infrastructure development and information communication technology. The government should make sure that airports are refurbished to attract more tourists. The need for a conducive investment climate is important for the tourism sector as it is for all other sectors of the economy.

Realignments and readjustments, at both regional and international level, took place. Driven by these changed global trends, India and China recognized the need to cooperate in the long-term interest of global and regional peace and stability as well as for their own economic prosperity.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract:The current wave of globalisation – the trend towards worldwide integration of markets – is spurred by the development of ICTs, including the Internet (Miria Pigato, 2001). But there exists founded concern whether this development reaches Less Developed Countries (LDCs).Technological transformations, such as Information Communication Technology (ICT), open new possibilities in various areas. With a rapid technological development the world faces the challenge to match the pace of technological innovation with national and global policy innovation. This paper will analyse the following hypotheses:1. Internet connectivity has potential to promote economic growth and support sustainable development for LDCs.2. The application of the Internet technology carries risks for LDCs.3. Successful application of Internet technology requires appropriate sustainable policies and strategies. The analysis is based upon literature review of economic and development theories, literature about ICT in development with particular focus on the Internet, country and development related information, and statistical data focussing in particular on South Africa and Uganda.Inhaltsverzeichnis:Table of Contents:INTRODUCTION61.OVERVIEW - LITERATURE REVIEW112.THE INTERNET AND E-BUSINESS202.1Internet202.2E-Business212.3Internet Connectivity - Indicators223.ECONOMIC BENEFITS273.1Global proximity, global business networking273.2Communication and information retrieval283.3E-business opport...
