Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: A, , course: Agric Economics, language: English, abstract: This study examined the dynamism of price movement between markets and its implication on pricing efficiency in maize markets. Primary data were collected using interview guides. A total of 240 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique in 6 rural and 6 urban markets in Ogun State. Weekly retail prices of yellow and white maize for five years (January 1999-December 2003) were analysed using the Bivariate Cointegration test and the Granger causality test to detect the presence and level of price integration. In Ogun State, domestic production of maize increased by 9 percent a year between 1990 - 2001. Although the growth in maize production may be attributed to cultivating more crop area and/or the adoption of improved open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties which provide the major stimulus for increased yield on the average. Annual growth rate of maize yields was 9.08 percent during 1990 - 2001. Most of the growth came from yellow maize, which increased at 8.92 percent annually, compared with 3.57 percent for white maize. In comparison with other states in South-West however, the Ogun state average yield of 1.41 metric tons per hectare is the lowest.i. How integrated are the maize markets in the study area?ii. Mengli Song, Tamara V. Young Reading. Policy, Politics, and Processes (PB)

The past decade saw heightened policy activism in the field of reading at both the federal level and across virtually all 50 states. Initially sparked by disagreements about methods for teaching children to read, the so-called "reading wars" stirred heated debates on a variety of issues: levels and trends of reading achievement, pedagogy, standards and assessment, and education equity, among others. Embedded within these debates were the political agendas of state executives and legislatures, the interests of advocacy groups, and the ideologies of reading professionals, which were collectively shaping state reading policy development. Drawing primarily on interviews with 366 policy actors from nine states, this book presents a comprehensive investigation of the state reading policy domain employing multiple theoretical frameworks and research methods. Using social network analysis, the authors examined the interplay among a plethora of policy actors embedded in reading policy networks. They explored in depth policy actors' divergent beliefs on key reading-related issues, the causal stories told, and the policy solutions proposed. In addition, they examined the variety of lobbying tactics that interest groups utilized to gain influence over the policymaking process and to advance their policy agenda. As the most significant research endeavor in the area of state reading policy to date, this cross-state comparative study sheds light on the multifaceted nature and th...

Contract farming is defined as a system for the production and supply of agricultural or horticultural produce under forward contracts between producers/suppliers and buyers. Contract farming offers the advantage of reduced capital investment, reduced risk of price fluctuation, guaranteed returns and provision of technical assistance to the farmers. The study was purposively conducted in Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, as the state is the second highest producer of potato in the country. Contract farming helped the farmers to diversify their farm, increased the employment opportunity and area under potato. It also helped the farmers to get more net benefit from potato. After engaging in contract farming the farmers used various inputs for potato cultivation more judiciously but not in higher quantity than the non contract farmers. There was not any major environmental disadvantage of potato contract farming except the emergence of new pest and diseases of potato. The knowledge level of the contract farmers about potato production technology and the disease management practices of potato were significantly higher than the non contract farmers..........

The objectives of this study were to identify the extension needs of land reform beneficiaries (A1 and A2 farmers) for sustainable land reform,by describing and analyzing the current extension corporation and activities in newly resettled areas. It was carried out in three districts, namely Kadoma, Chegutu and Zvimba, situated in Mashonaland West province of Zimbabwe. The target population samples for the study comprised of A1 and A2 farmers (N=690) and the extension personnel in the three districts (N=68). According to farmers (A1 and A2) the major constraints preventing them to farm optimally are: frequent droughts, inadequate financial credit, poor availability of production inputs, poor extension services, poor farming knowledge and no farming equipment. Proper selection of the land reform beneficiaries and human capital development is a critical component of a sustainable extension system. There is a need of greater participation of private role players in providing of inputs. For this to happen government should allow a free market system.Due to difference in socio-economic status between A1 and A2 farmers, a tailor made extension support system needs to be implemented.

Intercropping is experienced by preponderance of farmers in many regions of the world. Intercropping has since long been used as mean to cover the risk of failure of base crop and it can pilot to boost food supply without retreating the sustainability of soil. This system of cropping suppresses weeds, reduces pest disease infestation, gives yield advantage and there is stable yield over time. Crop fertilizer needs can be met with the addition of an organic fertilizer, which is suitable for enhancing crop yields on sustained basis and cost effective too. The use of legumes as an intercrop can serve a potential source of organic fertilizer. It can be used as a supplement source of nutrition especially that of nitrogen. It is an economical way of food production as one input such as N from legume can be applied once and used by all the crop components in the farm thereby saving time for the farmer. Thus present project will be helpful to farmers in order to augment the crop yield and sustain the soil fertility, identify an effective and low cost fertilizer level technique for maize and substitute N-fertilizer with leguminous crops as an organic source.

The agricultural-planning process is important from both social and economic perspectives. Farmers strive to produce maximum output with minimum inputs (cost optimization). During the last few decades, in addition to the economic aspect, another key factor in modern agriculture has become the environment. This book thus considers two optimization models. One has been developed for reducing the costs in optimization of the feed rations for sport horses and the second has been developed to maximize the profit during the crop planning process. The crucial advantage of these models is that there is an open program in which farmers can create a priority list of goals and subsequently set the most important tasks on their farms (e.g., reducing the production costs, maximizing the profits, saving the farm cropping area, filling in the unexploited cropping area, solving either the issue of underfeeding or overfeeding of livestock, etc.). Because of their relatively simply usage, the models are appropriate for a wide range of users; from farmers to extension services.

Muthuri Jacinta Soil Fertility and Yield of Soybeans

Soybean is an important crop in the world due to its supply of proteins and oil. In spite of its importance as a source of protein and oil, its production is way below potential. Declining soil fertility and high fertilizer costs are major limitations to crop production in developing countries due to reduction in farm sizes caused by increased human population. Reduced dependence on inorganic fertilizer nitrogen and adopting farming practices that favour more economically viable and environmentally prudent nitrogen fixation will benefit both agriculture and the environment. Biological materials may offer a solution in alleviating soil fertility problems and hence increase in crop production. Farm derived sources such as crop residue, compost, manure and household waste can be used by farmers in the management of soil fertility. Animal manure and compost are beneficial in soils because they can increase the water holding capacity and cation exchange capacity. This book assesses the effect of soil amendment with manure (poultry and farmyard) on the plant growth, nodulation and yield respectively as compared with inorganic fertilizer.

We estimate the effects of cash transfers on modern inputs demand, while isolating the role of output risk and risk preferences in channeling these effects. We use data from an RCT collected for the evaluation of Zambia’s Social Cash Transfer. We employ a moments-based method to estimate farmers’ risk attitudes from revealed preferences through production decisions and the impact of cash transfers on modern input demand. We find that the program increases demand for risk-increasing modern inputs but this does not happen as a result of a transfer-induced reduction in farmers’ risk aversion.

These farmers employ different tillage practices in the production of the crop. Many farmers perform tillage operations without being aware of the effect of these operations on soil physical properties and crop responses. It is carried out mainly to loosen the upper layer of soil, to mix the soil with fertilizer and organic residues, to control weeds, and to create a suitable seedbed for germination and plant growth. The theme of nutrient management in integrated way for increasing the soil fertility is gaining ground throughout the world in recent years due to high cost of fertilizer and reduced availability of organic manures. Modern tillage and integrated nutrient management practices may affect soil fertility and productivity of groundnut due to different soil conditions created and fulfills the nutrient requirement of crop. The book contains the information on the effect of tillage and integrated nutrient management practices on soil fertility and productivity of groundnut under rainfed conditions.

The Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis) cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 9.80, , course: Agri Business Management, language: English, abstract: STUDY ON PRICING VARIABILITY OF TOMATO IN WESTERN TAMIL NADU India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world, contributing 14% of the total world vegetables production. In India, tomato is the most widely grown vegetable crop with a share of 10 per cent and occupies third position. In this crop we observe more price variation due to increased supply of tomato than market demand which leads to glut in market followed by price reduction. The above price fluctuation was found to be significant which affects the economy of small and marginal farmers who are mostly involved in cultivation of tomato. For the benefit and welfare of these farmers it becomes necessary to forecast the tomato price. Based on these forecast, farmers can make cropping decision and avoid economic losses. The study conducted in western Tamil Nadu for past five month revealed that tomato price will raise in April which is forecasted through three month moving average. Aruah Chinenye Variations Among Some Nigerian Cucurbita Species

Cucurbita is one of the under utilised and endangered plant species in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a popular fruit vegetable among the rural dwellers. Its' existence is being threatened due to neglect. Extensive research efforts have been made on this crop by different authors in both America and Europe, but in Africa, it is viewed as a traditional food crop and, has not benefited from the same level of research efforts dedicated to other crops. Precise information on the classification of the Nigerian pumpkin is unavailable in the literature. This has created an information gap that may have discouraged high-income earners and urban dwellers from making this crop a part of their diet. This study was initiated to (i) characterize Nigeria pumpkins with respect to morphology and nutrient composition, (ii) determine the chromosomal archetecture and, (iii) provide a clue as to the relationship existing among some Nigerian Cucurbita. The research has established that the Nigerian Cucurbita are extremely diverse in the agronomic and nutritive traits. These variations could be exploited to an advantage by plant breeders, research institutions and scientists in agronomy and crop improvement

A volume in the series: Research in Science Education. Series Editor(s): Dennis W. Sunal, University of Alabama and Emmett L. Wright, Kansas State UniversityThe goal of this volume of Research in Science Education is to examine the relationship between science education policy and practice and the special role that science education researchers play in influencing policy. It has been suggested that the science education research community is isolated from the political process, pays little attention to policy matters, and has little influence on policy. But to influence policy, it is important to understand how policy is made and how it is implemented. This volume sheds light on the intersection between policy and practice through both theoretical discussions and practical examples. This book was written primarily about science education policy development in the context of the highly decentralized educational system of the United States. But, because policy development is fundamentally a social activity involving knowledge, values, and personal and community interests, there are similarities in how education policy gets enacted and implemented around the world. This volume is meant to be useful to science education researchers and to practitioners such as teachers and administrators because it provides information about which aspects of the science education enterprise are affected by state, local, and national policies. It also provides helpful information for researchers and...

Alem Gebretsadik Maize Production under Irrigated Agriculture

Attaining food security both at household and national level is the primary objective of all developing countries. Growing of consumer accepted high yielding crops is one of the solutions for those segments of the society that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. To this end, maize is potentially the most productive cereal crop that prospects the industrialization of tropical countries. The use of high population densities for early maturing maize varieties under irrigated condition has recorded grain yields of up to 8.5 tons/ha which is much higher than that of the yield that is being obtained in the subsistence rain fed agriculture that is not more than 1.5 to 2 tons/ha. Thus, this technology would shed light to small farm households, commercial farmers, and agricultural extension workers who are interested to engage in irrigated agriculture using different water sources.

Flavia Ursulescu The Impact of EU Regional Support on Economic Convergence

The large income gaps among the European regions have been a key factor in determining not only the implementation and development of the EU regional policy but also a large amount of controversial debates related to its efficacy in mitigating poverty and inducing convergence. Based on the endogenous growth models predictions, the EU regional policy has witnessed a continuously increased importance both in political and budgetary terms. However, the persistence of inequalities and the progressive share of the EU budget allocated to the EU Regional Policy have generated some doubts among researchers with regard to its efficacy in reducing the economic disparities among the EU regions. In this context, the purpose of this paper is an obvious one: examining whether a process of convergence has taken place among the regions of the four EU Cohesion Countries and assessing the role of the EU financial support in promoting convergence.

Plant pathogens and diseases are among the most significant challenges to survival that plants face. Disease outbreaks caused by microbial or viral pathogens can decimate crop yields and have severe effects on global food supply. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying plant immune response and applying this understanding to develop biotechnological tools to enhance plant defense against pathogens has great potential for moderating the impact of plant disease outbreaks. Plant Pathogen Resistance Biotechnology’s main focus is an in depth survey of the biological strategies being used to create transgenic disease resistant plants for sustainable plant resistance Plant Pathogen Resistance Biotechnology is divided into four sections. The first section covers biological mechanisms underpinning disease resistance in plants, while the second highlights case studies of important pathogen-crop groups and then considers why the application of important pathogen-crop groups, transgenic-based strategies designed to selectively target pathogens could benefit crop production. The third section provides information on the status of transgenic crops around the world, and finally the last part explores high-tech alternatives to genetic engineering for developing disease resistant traits in plants. Habitat loss and the pressures of the human population have already reduced the Asian elephants to a small fraction of its past area. Now they are only in 13 countries in fragmented and isolated population. The total population of Asian elephant in the wild is estimated to be between 34,000 and 54,000. In Bangladesh the number of Asian elephant is not more than 400; among them 90 to 94 individuals are living in Chittagong Forest Division. Elephant habitat of Chittagong Forest Division supports at least 177 species of flora and 173 species of fauna. The main cause of man elephant conflict is crop raiding which was only 1.61% of total crop cultivated in the studied elephant habitat. Conservation of a flagship species is very effective in modern management practice. The study aims to emphasize the conservation needs and community participation for saving elephants; and should be especially useful to professionals in conservation field, wildlife ecologist and policy makers.
