Kathrin Eichler Automatic extraction and processing of document references

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1.0, University of Sunderland (School of Computing and Technology), language: English, abstract: While reading documents, you often encounter text passages advising you to refer to other documents for more information about a specific topic. These references to other documents are particularly common in technical documents, written for the sole purpose of providing the reader with as much relevant information as possible, without rephrasing information that can be found elsewhere. Knowing how the documents in a system are interrelated, i.e. which other documents a document refers to or is referred by, can be extremely helpful when trying to get access to relevant information. A typicalexample of such a "knowledge net" providing information about document relations is CiteSeer, a digital library of academic literature. For each document in the library system, CiteSeer displays lists of related documents, such as a list of documents thatthe current document cites as well as a list of documents that the current document is cited by. The assumption that inspired this thesis is that such lists are not only helpful when reading academic literature but could also assist a reader of technical documentsstored in a company's document management system. The idea was thus to extend an existing document management system by displaying, for each document stored in the system, a list of link...

This book examines visual data use with students (PK-16) as well as in pre-service in- service scienceteacher preparation. Each chapter includes discussion about the current state of the art with respect toscience classroom application and utilization of the particular visual data targeted by the author(s),discussion and explanation about the targeted visual data as applied by the author in his/her classroom, useof visual data as a diagnostic tool, its use as an assessment tool, and discussion of implications for scienceteaching and/or science teacher preparation.Although the body of research and practice in this field is growing, there remains a gap in the literatureabout clearly explicating the use of visual data in the science classroom. A growing body of literaturediscusses what visual data are (although this topic is still viewed as being at the beginning of itsdevelopment in educators' thinking), and there are some scattered examples of studies exploring the use ofvisual data in science classrooms, although those studies have not necessarily clearly identified their foci asvisual data, per se. As interest and attention has become more focused on visual data, a logical progressionof questioning has been how visual data are actually applied in the science classroom, whether it be early elementary, college, or somewhere inbetween. Visual data applications of interest to the science education community include how it is identified, how it can be used with students and h...

Rotimi Egunjobi Effects of two instructional strategies on achievement in library use instruction among secondary school students with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, grade: PhD, University of Ibadan (Education), language: English, abstract: Hearing impairment limits individual in acquiring skills to become active and independent learners. It is therefore important to use adapted media in teaching people with hearing impairment skills to access and use information. These media are lacking in schools that provide integration services to learners with hearing impairment and this adversely affects the acquisition of lifelong skills like library use skills by the learners. There is also a dearth of research on library services to persons with hearing impairment in Nigeria. Forages, Volume I, Seventh Edition is the most comprehensive text available for teachers of undergraduate Forages courses. This edition will provide students with a good balance of scientific principles, to aid in integrating the concepts they learn, and practical information on forage identification, plant characteristics, management, and utilization that can be used by forage management practitioners. Grassland ecosystems are extremely complex, including the plant/animal interface as well as the soil/climate/forage interface and the text must support understanding and integration of all of these considerations. The coverage of the science behind the plant characteristics and responses make the book applicable in many parts of the world, while other region-specific management information relates mainly to North America. This edition has been updated to address emerging areas of study, including the use of forage plants as bioenergy crops. The editors also address the renewed national interest in environmental issues such as water quality, global climate change and eutrophication in the Gulf. This edition also addresses the role of forages for wildlife habitat and food sources, another area of increased interest in recent years. These revisions respond to the generational change taking place among forage scientists and teachers in recent years.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Literature - Africa, grade: 70%, University of Ibadan, course: Yorùbá literature, language: English, abstract: Signs, whether consciously or unconsciously used, have a semantics implication on the verbal art. Most especially in poetry, signs are used to pass information across to the reader since poetry economises words than other literary form. The signs use in poetry take different forms which may at time need an eclectic literary approach before the proper understanding of such usage. The proper understanding of the signs used in poetry increases the chance of attributing its proper meaning. This would definitely increase the affective application of literature messages in solving societal problems. The objective of this study is to find out the use of signs in Àtàrí Àjànàkú's Orin Ewúro.Doing this will explore some hidden information about the sings used. It will also suggest more probable meanings to these signs. This reseach is library based. The analysis is presented in a descriptive analytical approach. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,3, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institute of Information Systems), language: English, abstract: The Information Systems (IS) research discipline is undergoing a serious identity crisis, seeking its sphere of activity to be relevant in practice and rigorous in scientific considerations. One reason for this is the strengthening of the Design Science approach. This new discipline developed as a synergy from aspects of engineering, architecture, and industrial design and is employed in the design of IT artifacts and software systems. Design Science is becoming a powerful trend in IS research (Vahidov 2006). It gives the IS discipline a new and more detailed focal point as pertains to the application of software and IT artifact development which is growing in importance in IS research over the time (Weber 2003; Orlikowski and Iacono 2001; Cross 2001). IS practitioners ask for new and innovative design approaches, dealing with the evolving organizational and inter-organizational tasks. The way these tasks are executed, in close cooperation with the practical business world, seems to be insufficiently considered. The debate in IS research is carried out between traditional scientists and the knowledge-producing researchers/practitioners and "it could be argued that research aimed at developing IT systems, at improving IT practice, has been more successful and impor...

George E. Deboer The Role of Public Policy in K-12 Science Education

A volume in the series: Research in Science Education. Series Editor(s): Dennis W. Sunal, University of Alabama and Emmett L. Wright, Kansas State UniversityThe goal of this volume of Research in Science Education is to examine the relationship between science education policy and practice and the special role that science education researchers play in influencing policy. It has been suggested that the science education research community is isolated from the political process, pays little attention to policy matters, and has little influence on policy. But to influence policy, it is important to understand how policy is made and how it is implemented. This volume sheds light on the intersection between policy and practice through both theoretical discussions and practical examples. This book was written primarily about science education policy development in the context of the highly decentralized educational system of the United States. But, because policy development is fundamentally a social activity involving knowledge, values, and personal and community interests, there are similarities in how education policy gets enacted and implemented around the world. This volume is meant to be useful to science education researchers and to practitioners such as teachers and administrators because it provides information about which aspects of the science education enterprise are affected by state, local, and national policies. It also provides helpful information for researchers and...

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, University of Münster (Englisches Seminar), course: T.S. Eliot, Critical Essays, language: English, abstract: In the course of history, literature as well as literary theory and critique experienced various changes due to social circumstances. Their function in certain periods and epochs differed vastly. Without any doubt, the Victorian critic and poet, Matthew Arnold, represents a significant predecessor of Thomas Stearns Eliot and is fundamentally important for the understanding of his literary theory and criticism. The modern literary critic of the 20th century, T. S. Eliot, is therefore more closely associated with the theories of the Victorian artist than any other literary critic or poet. However, their relation is not easy to define and bares not only immense analogies but also many divergences and contradictions. The present work represents an analysis of T. S. Eliot's reaction towards Matthew Arnold in his early essays. Therefore, it also traces the transition of literary theory and criticism from the 19th to the 20th century. Their attitudes towards literary the-ory and poetry will be exposed as well as their concept of literary criticism and its functions. Besides, their notion of historical circumstances and their perception of morality in literature are crucial aspects worth a detailed observation. For this purpose, Eliot's comments on Matthew Arnold in his early essa...

Derek Pacheco Moral Enterprise. Literature and Education in Antebellum America

Moral Enterprise: Literature and Education in Antebellum America, by Derek Pacheco, investigates an important moment in the history of professional authorship. Pacheco uses New England "literary reformers" Horace Mann, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Elizabeth Peabody, and Margaret Fuller to argue that writers came to see in educational reform, and the publication venues emerging in connection with it, a means to encourage popular authorship while validating literary work as a profession. Although today's schools are staffed by systematically trained and institutionally sanctioned teachers, in the unregulated, decentralized world of antebellum America, literary men and women sought the financial stability of teaching while claiming it as moral grounds for the pursuit of greater literary fame.Examining the ethically redemptive and potentially lucrative definition of antebellum author as educator, this book traces the way these literary reformers aimed not merely at social reform through literature but also at the reform of literature itself by employing a wide array of practices-authoring, editing, publishing, and distributing printed texts-brought together under the aegis of modern, democratic education. Moral Enterprise identifies such endeavors by their dual valence as bold, reformist undertakings and economic ventures, exploring literary texts as educational commodities that might act as entry points into, and ways to tame, what Mann characterized as the "Alexandrian l...

Many factors prevent the utilization such as the market density, low value of wood, cheap gas and hydro power and the crushing communication between environmentalists and the U.S. Forest Service. However, respondents look positively into the future and see lots of possibilities of the utilization of biomass. This research deals with the possibilities of the utilization and possible reasons why wood is burnt instead of being used. Narrative interviews with seven different stakeholder groups were performed both personally and by telephone. Transliteration of the interviews and the analysis of the barriers were evaluated by qualitative approach after the interviews.
