Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: none, , course: Information Technology , language: English, abstract: This thesis proposes a software description language to represent the source code ofC++, Java, and VB.NET in the Extensible Markup Language. The similarity ofsemantics between these languages enables representing the source code in a form suchthat both, the source code and logic can be easily shared and reused between theselanguages.By performing semantic and syntactic comparison between C++, Java and VB.NET, theproposed language has been designed to include the similar and identical features andlanguage constructs. For every adopted language construct, a corresponding construct inthe proposed language has been developed. The validity of the proposed language has been investigated and proved theoretically byconducting a semantic comparison between the three languages and experimentally bydeveloping applications to convert source code from Java into the proposed languageand from the proposed language into VB.NET. Validation cases have been designed toinclude various programs such as sorting, searching and also to include the most usedprogramming constructs in the three languages. Source code of the validation caseshave been converted from Java into the proposed language, and from the proposedlanguage into VB.NET. Java and VB.NET programs of the validation cases have beenexecuted and results compared. The results were iden...

Explores and identifies the main issues, concepts, principles and evolution of software testing, including software quality engineering and testing concepts, test data generation, test deployment analysis, and software test management This book examines the principles, concepts, and processes that are fundamental to the software testing function. This book is divided into five broad parts. Part I introduces software testing in the broader context of software engineering and explores the qualities that testing aims to achieve or ascertain, as well as the lifecycle of software testing. Part II covers mathematical foundations of software testing, which include software specification, program correctness and verification, concepts of software dependability, and a software testing taxonomy. Part III discusses test data generation, specifically, functional criteria and structural criteria. Test oracle design, test driver design, and test outcome analysis is covered in Part IV. Finally, Part V surveys managerial aspects of software testing, including software metrics, software testing tools, and software product line testing. Presents software testing, not as an isolated technique, but as part of an integrated discipline of software verification and validation Proposes program testing and program correctness verification within the same mathematical model, making it possible to deploy the two techniques in concert, by virtue of the law of diminishing returns Defines the concept of a software fault, and the related concept of relative correctness, and shows how relative correctness can be used to characterize monotonic fault removal Presents the activity of software testing as a goal oriented activity, and explores how the conduct of the test depends on the selected goal Covers all phases of the software testing lifecycle, including test data generation, test oracle design, test driver design, and test outcome analysis Software Testing: Concepts and Operations is a great resource for software quality and software engineering students because it presents them with fundamentals that help them to prepare for their ever evolving discipline.

Systems' Verification Validation and Testing (VVT) are carried out throughout systems' lifetimes. Notably, quality-cost expended on performing VVT activities and correcting system defects consumes about half of the overall engineering cost. Verification, Validation and Testing of Engineered Systems provides a comprehensive compendium of VVT activities and corresponding VVT methods for implementation throughout the entire lifecycle of an engineered system. In addition, the book strives to alleviate the fundamental testing conundrum, namely: What should be tested? How should one test? When should one test? And, when should one stop testing? In other words, how should one select a VVT strategy and how it be optimized? The book is organized in three parts: The first part provides introductory material about systems and VVT concepts. This part presents a comprehensive explanation of the role of VVT in the process of engineered systems (Chapter-1). The second part describes 40 systems' development VVT activities (Chapter-2) and 27 systems' post-development activities (Chapter-3). Corresponding to these activities, this part also describes 17 non-testing systems' VVT methods (Chapter-4) and 33 testing systems' methods (Chapter-5). The third part of the book describes ways to model systems’ quality cost, time and risk (Chapter-6), as well as ways to acquire quality data and optimize the VVT strategy in the face of funding, time and other resource limitations as well as different business objectives (Chapter-7). Finally, this part describes the methodology used to validate the quality model along with a case study describing a system’s quality improvements (Chapter-8). Fundamentally, this book is written with two categories of audience in mind. The first category is composed of VVT practitioners, including Systems, Test, Production and Maintenance engineers as well as first and second line managers. The second category is composed of students and faculties of Systems, Electrical, Aerospace, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering schools. This book may be fully covered in two to three graduate level semesters; although parts of the book may be covered in one semester. University instructors will most likely use the book to provide engineering students with knowledge about VVT, as well as to give students an introduction to formal modeling and optimization of VVT strategy.

Pekka Tiusanen Real Estate Price Forecasting in Finland

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: There is an abundance of existing literature regarding time series forecasting and the housing market. This thesis evaluates the performance and statistical adequacy of several time series models in the context of real estate price forecasting in Finland. Each statistical model is applied so that forecasts are generated over the seven quarters following the training sample. The resulting forecasts are compared against realized price development. Model evaluation is carried out from the viewpoint of forecasting errors in the validation period, statistical fit, modelling constraints and success in the light of the theoretical framework. It was concluded that scarce ARIMA-based models are suitable for short-term real estate price forecasting in the concerned setting. The models were built on logarithmic I(1) nominal data and augmented with seasonal dummy variables. The Chen & Liu (1993) structural anomaly detection method enhanced statistical fit in the training period and forecasting accuracy in the validation period. The inclusion of a drift parameter generally led to inflated forecasting results in the validation period. The RMSE and MAE error statistics produced by the best ARIMA-based models remained well below 0.5 % in the validation period. The Holt & Winters and I(1) OLS models were also outperformed by the most adept ARIMA-based models. The in...

Document from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, , course: Applied Mathematics, language: English, abstract: Software testing is a process designed to make sure computer code does what it is designed to do and that it doesn't do anything unintended. It is used to achieve quality assurance, verification, validation and reliability estimation. It is a major quality control measure used during the software development. Testing is the process of operating a system or component under specified conditions, observing or recording the results, and making an evaluation of some aspect of system or a component.Testing of software is done at different levels of abstraction - unit, integration and system levels. During testing of software, there is a need to observe the internal and external execution details of the software. The internal execution details are required for the diagnosis of incorrect output during testing, and to ensure correctness of processing in case of a correct output. Without observing the internal execution details, the incorrect results may appear to be correct. Logging is a systematic method of recording the internal information of software. It is one of the typical examples of crosscutting concern (concerns that are common to many of the core modules that span multiple modules). By examining the log, an unexpected system behavior can be identified and corrected. It acts as a diagnostic assistant to reveal the inner working of a system. L...

Studies of teacher beliefs about language learning, as compared to student beliefs, are relatively less common, especially concerning English language learning in Asian countries. The educational reform movement in Taiwan encourages learning English for communicative purposes and values individual interests. However, many current in-service English teachers and parents learned English via grammar translation method and testing, which focuses on the correction of language forms. As a result, these English teachers and parents may or may not share similar views about the changing trends in English learning. A survey and an interview protocol were served as data collection instruments. Teacher beliefs toward English learning in Taiwan were fully revealed in this book. The book provides the mutual understandings between eastern and western perspectives in terms of language education.

DNA typing of non-human DNA is a fast developing area of research and professional practice. The application of DNA typing in wildlife forensic science is one of these prime uses of DNA typing and is gaining increasing profile. The use of DNA profiling in wildlife forensic science falls into two broad areas: species testing and genetic linkage. Species testing answers the question ‘what species is this?’ and genetic linkage answers the question ‘did these two samples come from the same organism or population?’ Wildlife DNA Analysis: Applications in Forensic Science provides an accessible introduction to both of these key areas. Clearly structured throughout, the introduction highlights the different types of crime where these techniques are regularly used. This chapter includes a discussion as to who performs forensic wildlife examinations, the standardisation and validation of methods, and the role of the expert witness in this type of alleged crime. This is followed by a detailed section on the science behind DNA typing including the problems in isolating DNA from trace material and subsequent genetic analysis are also covered. The book then undertakes a comprehensive review of species testing using DNA, including a step-by-step guide to sequence comparisons. A comparison of the different markers used in species testing highlights the criteria for a genetic marker. A full set of case histories illustrates the use of the different markers used. The book details the use of genetic markers to link two or more hairs/feather/leaves/needles to the same individual organism and the software used in population assignment. The problems and possibilities in isolating markers, along with the construction of allele databases are discussed in this chapter. The book concludes with evaluation and reporting of genetic evidence in wildlife forensic science illustrated by examples of witness statements. •An accessible introduction to this fast developing area of research within forensic science •Case studies throughout to link theory and practice and to highlight the use of DNA testing in species testing. •Covers both crimes against wildlife and offences where wildlife can provide vital evidence •Assumes only a basic background knowledge of DNA •Includes a comprehensive review of species testing using DNA, including a step-by-step guide to sequence comparisons

The design, implementation and validation of avionics and aeronautical systems have become extremely complex tasks due to the increase of functionalities that are deployed in current avionics systems and the need to be able certify them before putting them into production. This book proposes a methodology to enable the rapid prototyping of such a system by considering from the start the certification aspects of the solution produced. This method takes advantage of the model-based design approaches as well as the use of formal methods for the validation of these systems. Furthermore, the use of automatic software code generation tools using models makes it possible to reduce the development phase as well as the final solution testing. This book presents, firstly, an overview of the model-based design approaches such as those used in the field of aeronautical software engineering. Secondly, an original methodology that is perfectly adapted to the field of aeronautical embedded systems is introduced. Finally, the authors illustrate the use of this method using a case study for the design, implementation and testing of a new generation aeronautical router.

Academic Language in Second Language Learning

Language in academic settings, also referred to academic language, has gained attentionin the field of second language learning owing to new understandings of the complexitiesof language inherent in learning academic content, and new efforts to assessEnglish learners' language proficiency in the context of school learning. The conceptof academic language as distinct from social language has been in the academic literaturesince the mid-1950s, and surfaced as a major construct in the field of bilingualeducation in the 1980s. Many readers will be familiar with the ideas of BICS andCALP, first introduced by Jim Cummins in the 1980s. This book presents a critique ofacademic language as a separable construct from social language, and introduces currentresearch efforts to understand how English learners interact, interpret, and showunderstanding of language in academic contexts in ways that re-think and go beyondthe distinction between social and academic language. The book is organized into three main sections, each with a range of chapters that consider how academic language playsinto how children and youth learn academic content as emergent bilingual students in school settings. A Foreward andAfterward offer commentary on the book and its contents. The intended audience for this book is graduate students, teachereducators, and researchers interested in issues of language and content learning for English learners, the new mainstream ofschools across the nation. This second edition of a global bestseller has been completely redesigned and extensively rewritten to take into account the new Quality by Design (QbD) and lifecycle concepts in pharmaceutical manufacturing. As in the first edition, the fundamental requirements for analytical method validation are covered, but the second edition describes how these are applied systematically throughout the entire analytical lifecycle. QbD principles require adoption of a systematic approach to development and validation that begin with predefined objectives. For analytical methods these predefined objectives are established as an Analytical Target Profile (ATP). The book chapters are aligned with recently introduced standards and guidelines for manufacturing processes validation and follow the three stages of the analytical lifecycle: Method Design, Method Performance Qualification, and Continued Method Performance Verification. Case studies and examples from the pharmaceutical industry illustrate the concepts and guidelines presented, and the standards and regulations from the US (FDA), European (EMA) and global (ICH) regulatory authorities are considered throughout. The undisputed gold standard in the field.

Examining Listening: Research and Practice in Assessing Second Language Listening

This volume examines the nature of second language listening proficiency and how it can be assessed. The book highlights the need for test developers to provide a clear explication of the ability constructs which underpin the tests they offer in the public domain. This is increasingly necessary if claims about the validity of test score interpretation and use are to be supported both logically and with empirical evidence. It operationalises a comprehensive test validation framework which adopts a socio-cognitive perspective. The framework embraces six core components, examining and then analysing Cambridge ESOL listening tasks from the following perspectives: Test Taker; Cognitive Validity; Context Validity; Scoring Validity; Criterion-related Validity; and Consequential Validity.

Theresa Schmidt English Inversion in Second Language Acquisition of German Native Speakers

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 3,0, 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: On the basis of questionnaire data, this study seeks to find a tendency for native languageinfluence in the judgement of German-speaking learners of English. Seeing that the conceptof language transfer has received diverse weight in the history of second language acquisition(SLA), the present account illuminates the issue anew, with a specific linguistic concern.Inversion structures, though not canonical, are very frequent in the German language, whereas the English language offers comparatively rare environments which trigger or allowfor inversions. As previous studies found, language transfer, in regard to word order, emerged when the native language exhibited flexible word order, and the language to belearnt, in contrast, had a rather fixed one. This gave rise to the assumption that Germannatives would generally accept subject-verb inversion in declarative sentences in English, even if for a native speaker of English the structure would not be acceptable. Thus, thesecond language learners are expected to score high on the acceptability rate for themajority of instances of inversion in English, since the German equivalents of the test itemsare basically quite acceptable in German.

Breno Miranda, Juliano Iyoda Recommender Systems for Manual Testing

Software testing is an arduous and expensive activity. In the context of manual testing, any effort to reduce the test execution time and to increase defect findings is welcome. One approach is to allocate test cases according to the testers profile in a way to maximise testing productivity. However, optimising the allocation of manual test cases is not a trivial task: in large companies, test managers are responsible for allocating hundreds of test cases among several testers. We implemented 2 assignment algorithms for test case allocation and defined 3 tester profiles based on recommender systems (the same kind of system that recommends, for example, a book at Amazon.com). Our allocation systems take into account the tester's effectiveness (valid defects found in the past) and expertise (ability to run tests with certain characteristics). We performed a controlled experiment in a real industrial setting in order to compare our allocation systems to the manager's allocation and to random allocations. The findings of this research are especially useful to software testing professionals, or anyone else who wants to better understand how the manual software testing process works.

An up-to-date insight into the minority language education practice of a Burgenland-Croatian ethnic sample group is delivered, based on data obtained by self reporting questionna...
