This book presents the results of a study carried out in Albania during a four year period between 2001-2004, financed by the Office of UN Volunteers near UNDP in Tirana. In this book, it is argued in a deep theoretical way that voluntary activity is a necessary thread of the functionality of human society in every stage of its development. It is argued that in the pantheon of volunteers the central place is taken by the figure of the mother, who, in every society has done and still does a great deal of voluntary work for the raising and the socialization of children. The book also highlights the fact that the work of true artist that serve as a socialization tool and as a aesthetic education for many generations, is in its foundation voluntary a activity. It presents in details the work of scientist as a volunteer activity. The book states that the work of scientist is the most altruistic work, because it serves its contemporaries and generations to come, friends and their opponents, in particular in the field of medicine. The book also presents a wide picture of voluntary activities and the mentality for voluntarism in Albanian traditional society, totalitarian and democracy.

Luo Jia Reform as a Social Movement in the Tibetan Society

Reform as a social process is underresearched in the case of Tibetan society. This study addresses this gap using Social Movement Theory. This approach was applied by comparing recruitment and mobilization efforts of several key internal and external reform movements in 20th century Tibetan history. Findings include that internal reform failures can be explained by their narrow social and geographic basis and limited mass appeal. Moreover, initial CPC reforms succeeded through recruitment and mobilization across Tibetan society and social groupings. Subsequent reforms failed due to decreased attention to recruitment and mass mobilization of Tibetans. A major implication of the study is that understanding social reform in today’s Tibetan society requires a SM Theory approach, which currently is lacking among scholars of the Tibetan question and political representatives of both sides.

This discovery sparked years of investigating the background of the accused and the state's evidence. Tensions between tribal police and Elmer McGinnis escalated to a point that a beam of light appeared to trigger a tragic firefight. Elmer's Tribal War is a factual account of events that took place in the early morning hours of August 27, 1986. Questions remain as to who was responsible for the death of a tribal officer and the wounding of his partner.

As I myself belong to tribal community (Santhal community), had a great desire to do some research work on the tribal people not only on the Santhal community but also on the other tribal communities, Ho and Khadea, as i have grown up studying with some of my childhood friends from Ho and Khadea tribal communities in village school during my childhood time. These tribal communities especially the Khadea community residing in the neighbour hilly and dense forest area near my village, always has been away from the lime lights. I had always wished to disseminate some information on socio-cultural beliefs and health practices of tribal people to the outer world. So i decided to undertake a study to assess the health seeking behavior for malaria of three tribal communities (Santhal, Ho and Khadea) in the Jharadihi block of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha state, as it belonged to my home land.I hope my research work will help to enlighten some of the hidden facts about health seeking behavior of the tribal people.

In an auditorium in Belcourt, North Dakota, on a chilly October day in 1932, Robert Bruce and his fellow tribal citizens held the political fate of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in their hands. Bruce, and the others, had been asked to adopt a tribal constitution, but he was unhappy with the document, as it limited tribal governmental authority. However, white authorities told the tribal nation that the proposed constitution was a necessary step in bringing a lawsuit against the federal government over a long-standing land dispute. Bruce's choice, and the choice of his fellow citizens, has shaped tribal governance on the reservation ever since that fateful day.In this book, Keith Richotte Jr. offers a critical examination of one tribal nation's decision to adopt a constitution. By asking why the citizens of Turtle Mountain voted to adopt the document despite perceived flaws, he confronts assumptions about how tribal constitutions came to be, reexamines the status of tribal governments in the present, and offers a fresh set of questions as we look to the future of governance in Native America and beyond.

An immensely valuable and revealing book about the decades-long Naga national movement, containing interviews with leaders, ideologues and soldiers that have never been published before. This first-of-its-kind book tells the story of the Naga national movement from the inside. Based on extensive interviews of the Naga nationalists, conducted in the late 1990s in Bangkok, Kathmandu, Dimapur and Delhi, it explains why the Indo-Naga conflict has lasted more than seven decades, and why successive prime ministers of India, from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, have personally met the Naga leaders and tried to resolve the conflict. In Kuknalim, leaders and members of ten Naga tribes spread across India and Myanmar speak directly to the reader about their childhood experiences, reasons for joining the armed struggle, and their personal triumphs and tragedies. They recount their journeys from small impoverished mountain villages through the jungles of Myanmar to China—from where they carried back arms to fight for an independent Nagaland—and finally the journey to the negotiating table. These stories relate to the period of the Naga movement from World War II to 1997, when Naga nationalists under the NSCN (IM) entered into a ceasefire agreement with the Indian state and began peace talks. And in the introduction to the book and the different sections in it, the authors also write about subsequent events, besides providing the political context for each interview.A groundbreaking work...

The State of Qatar is emerging as one of the major players in the economic, humanitarian and political fields. However, social development is a more complex issue; it's almost an organic phenomenon that simply cannot be fast forwarded as the economic developments. The people of Qatar experienced a rare occurrence in which the rapid economic development surpassed the social development, leaving the people in a state of a culture shock in their own backyard. The relationship between tribalism and modernity, and particularly the impact of this relationship on Qatari women, is examined in this study. The study reveals that despite gender and tribal differences in attitudes, important traditional perceptions of women's roles have been undermined in favor of modern views. Economic developments, quality education and the influence of strong female leaders are responsible for the greater social participation of Qatari women in the society and for the slow shifting of traditional tribal worldviews.

Venezuela has had a long and bloody history of military dictatorships. Yet, since 1958, it has developed one of the few effective, competitive democracies in Latin America. To explain this transformation Daniel H. Levine analyzes the development of modern mass-based political parties with pervasive organizations and commanding strong loyalties; the changing structure and content of social and political conflict; and the gradual emergence of common norms governing political behavior. This book does not pretend to be a general survey of Venezuelan politics. Rather, it is an attempt to understand, for both theoretical and practical purposes, the development of shared "rules of the game" for political action in a heterogeneous society. Once these norms are accepted by key elites, and then imposed on recalcitrant oppositions, they provide a means of controlling and managing political conflict without eliminating it.Mr. Levine's conclusions are based primarily on case studies of specific political conflicts. His study of conflicts over educational reform uncovers the conditions in which a traditional sector of society-Catholic groups and institutions-moved from violent, total opposition to the political system to a position of accommodation. In the second case study he examines the role of students in politics, with special reference to the integration of students in national patterns of conflict and opposition.Originally published in 1973.The Princeton Legacy Library us...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, grade: none, Ateneo de Naga University, language: English, abstract: "To be men and women for others," this Ignatian motto is ingrained in students, staff and faculty members of any Jesuit universities in the world. One way to find expression of this motto is through volunteering. After three decades since Pedro Arrupe, SJ, coined this Ignatian motto, how is one Jesuit university in the Philippines living up to the motto through volunteering? The Ateneo de Naga University as a modern university serves in four functions; instruction, research, extension and public service, and preservation and transmission of culture. The four are expected to flow from and contribute to each other (Javier 1995). Thus far in Ateneo de Naga University, various councils and committees were instituted to put premium on the first two traditional functions, instruction and research. Consequently as in other universities, among the four, the third function -extension and public service as well as the fourth one, are sparingly given the same regard as instruction and research.

It is sorely the responsibility of the state to provide security to its own citizens. But sometimes the challenge of failing states in Africa results in ethical attacks against the state from non-state actors. Usually the response could be to condemn, correct, coalesce, command or commend the state to behave accordingly. But such a response especially by the civil society requires a comprehensive analytical framework of its role, hence human security. This book attempts to analyse the role of the civil society in promoting human security in contexts of increased vulnerability. A case study of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance is used given the deplorable context of the decade of crisis in Zimbabwe (1998-2008). This must have book for university and college libraries, for NGOs, researchers and practitioners in peacebuilding, human security, and civil society and even for policy analysts. This is because the book identifies and evaluates strategies in advancing human security by the civil society and then further suggests further factors to consider towards enhancing it. The book gives a glaring clarity of the influence of the civil society and state relations in Zimbabwe.

Most of the local societies in which Al-Qaida and its affiliates and offshoots operate in the Middle East and Africa have a predominantly tribal or at least have a strong tribal component (Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Mali, and Sinai). Countering Al-Qaida's continuing presence, therefore, requires addressing the tribal milieu and understanding Al-Qaida's critical vulnerabilities when it operates in tribal societies. In this context, the capability that tribally-based militias provide may be one of the most effective tools against Al-Qaida, and may offer a cost-effective mechanism serving as a force multiplier for U.S. forces. It could reduce the need for U.S. force commitment on the ground in environments that might offer unfavorable conditions for a U.S. Landpower footprint.

"If God cannot save me and my village from my enemy's attack, I will make idols and worship them." An anonymous vilager (Manipur, India) The introduction of Christianity by missionaries in North-East India, without ignoring the positive contribution, failed to provide a sound theological foundation for the people of this region in their quest for identity and liberation. In this publication, the author, a native of the region, investigates the struggle for identity among the tribal people of North-East India and more particularly the Kuki people of Manipur. Exploring the social, cultural, religious and political changes brought to the people of this region the book highlights their real struggle for justice and dignity. Outlining aspects of the Kuki tradition, as well as dialoguing with Dalit and tribal theology the author proposes possible contributions to a local theology that can help in shaping a new sense of identity for the tribal people of North-East India.

Swiss Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, grade: 6, University of Zurich (Ethnologisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: This master thesis evaluates and analyses the interrelationship of tribes and the Omani state formation, hence the role and importance of tribes in people's everyday life in comparison with the awareness of tribes on the official side. It brings into focus three main aspects:First, an accurate definition of tribe is given. Although it is widely discussed in literature what one has to understand by tribe, this thesis mainly pinpoint the ideas and opinions of how Omani citizens apprehend their tribal identity and how they define what a tribe is. In a second step, the importance of tribal identity in people's everyday life is evaluated. In a time where such tremendous social changes have occurred, as has been the case in Oman, where people experience prosperity and wealth and where globalising issues influence especially the younger generations, it is of considerable interest to find out what role tribal identity plays (or does not play). Third, a fuller understanding of the perception of tribes on the official side contributes to the actual debate in social science about tribes and state formation in the Middle East and examine the situation in Oman.

Somalia is generally thought of as a homogenous society, with a common Arabic ancestry, a shared culture of nomadism and one Somali mother tongue. This study challenges this myth. Using the Jareer/Bantu as a case study, the book shows how the Negroid physical features of this ethnic group has become the basis for ethnic marginalization, stigma, social exclusion and apartheid in Somalia. The book is another contribution to the recent deconstruction of the perceived Somali homogeneity and self-same assertions. It argues that the Somalis, just like most societies, employ multiple levels of social and ethnic distinctions, one of which is the Jareer versus Jileec divide. Dr. Eno successfully portrays another Somalia, in which a mythical homogeneity masks the oppression and social exclusion suffered by some ethnic groups in the country.

Most studies of eighteenth-century community life in America have focused on New England, and in many respects the New England town has become a model for our understanding of communities throughout the United States during this period. In this study of a mid-Atlantic town, Stephanie Grauman Wolf describes a very different way of organizing society, indicating that the New England model may prove atypical. In addition, her analysis suggests the origins of twentieth-century social patterns in eighteenth-century life.Germantown, Pennsylvania, was chosen for study because it was a small urban center characterized by an ethnically and religiously mixed population of high mobility. The author uses quantitative analysis and sample case study to examine all aspects of the community. She finds that heterogeneity and mobility had a marked effect on urban development--on landholding, occupation, life style, and related areas; community organization for the control of government and church affairs; and the structure and demographic development of the: family. Her work represents an important advance not only in our understanding of eighteenth-century American society, but also in the ways in which we investigate it.

The concept of power presupposes that there are those who wield power and those who are ruled in the society. But, as times and society keeps on changing, the power barons also change tact in their attempt to cling on to power. Thus, Sociological theory was used in metaphors of power to analyse the relationship between power and change in society. Stylistics criticism was employed to unravel the dramatic elements used by the playwrights to articulate the metaphors of power and change in the selected texts.

Chasing a Dream is a travelogue with a difference. It tells of the author's experiences and impressions when he travelled to the tribal areas of central and south eastern India in the 1970s and 80s. Here he encountered tribal gods and goddesses like Anga Pen, Son Kuar, Kandakankalin, Telgin Mata and Siraha or medicine-men Bhaku Netam. He trekked more than once accompanied by just one or two local acquaintances into areas very far from common knowledge or public gaze, into the land of the Muria and Maria and the Hill Saora, with their unique beliefs and cultures. His inspiration being the writings of Dr. Verrier Elwin, the noted anthropologist, these accounts are interwoven with what Dr. Elwin had himself written of about thirty years before these travels were made. It also goes on to give glimpses of the life that Elwin spent in these areas in the 1940s. It provides the reader with rare insights into the different reality of tribal life in India.Born in Calcutta in 1944, Prosenjit Das Gupta completed his education from St. Xavier's Collegiate School and Presidency College, Calcutta. He joined a commercial organization in 1966 and worked there, till his retirement a few years ago. His interest in wildlife and tribal and folk culture developed in his college days. He has travelled extensively, to tribal areas of central India as well as to national parks and sanctuaries. This study is an immortal and intellectual recognition of al-Alūri for his work well done in the field of Islamic da'wah, social, humanitarian and intellectual contributions in the Yorubaland in particular, Nigeria as a whole, and Africa in general. It seeks to investigate the factors or processes that led to the transformation of the Yoruba Muslim society through the influence of Shaykh Ādam 'Abd Allāh al-Alūri, and his influences on the Muslim-Arabic institution in Nigeria, with particular reference to the Yoruba. The study also clarifies, to a certain extent though, the conflicting views of the scholars with regard to arrival of Islam to the Yoruba in western Nigeria. The study, from the submission of 'Abd Allāh al-Alūri, ascertains that Islam came to Yoruba land from Mali in the first half of the 14th century. According to Shaykh al-Alūri, the importance attached to family as a cornerstone of a healthy and balanced society, is one of the most striking features of the Muslim society, and the process of modernization essentially involves a rational structural transformation of simultaneous changes in its linguistic system and values.

The research was a qualitative case study which investigated the experiences and perceptions of disabled students with regard to service provision and support in a higher educational institute through the narrative approach. The study followed on a quantitative study done by UNESCO (1997) whose report acknowledged the lack of a ‘voice’ of disabled students. This work therefore, attempted to provide the missing ‘voice’ and offer new insights into experiences of disabled students in higher education. This book therefore, may be useful to students of social studies, disability studies and postgraduate students with interest in case study research; policymakers, educators, planners with a passion for how disabled students learn in higher education. It is hoped that the study offers new knowledge that can inform both policy and practice in higher education. However, findings from a case study, such as this one, may not be generalizable to a wider population, but may likely be used as 'fuzzy generalizations’, which can only be applied on the basis of 'best fit' to address and solve problems in other higher educational institutes
