This book explores the essential traits for building cross-national operating accelerator ecosystems. By building upon existing ecosystem and network theory, this book investigates the essential conditions on a local as well as global level and the influence it has on all participating parties. As a result grounded theory is being built and a practical framework set. Hereby, the book contributes value from a theoretical as well as practical perspective. From a theoretical point of view it extends ecosystem and network theory within the segment of accelerator ecosystems. Furthermore, the books shapes accelerator theory by further distinguishing between accelerator theory and incubator theory as well as by delivering a framework for cross-nationally operating accelerator programs. From a practical point of view participating parties of this ecosystem receive an objective overview of what to expect and how to add value most efficiently within this framework.

The subject of this book is cross-disciplinary. Sigmoid functions present a field of interest both for fundamental as well as application-driven research. We have tried to give the readers the flavour of both perspectives. From the perspective of fundamental science sigmoid functions are of special interest in abstract areas such as approximation theory and probability theory. More specifically, sigmoid function are an object of interest in Hausdorff approximations, fuzzy set theory, cumulative distribution functions, etc. From the perspective of applied mathematics and modelling sigmoid functions find their place in numerous areas of life and social sciences, physics and engineering, to mention a few familiar applications: population dynamics, artificial neural networks, signal and image processing. We consider this book to be suitable for undergraduate students attending master programs from applied mathematics and mathematical modelling. Readers with some computational programming skills may find numerous ideas for writing their own programs to run graphics of various sigmoid functions (the ones presented in the book make use of the computer algebra system Mathematica).

Since its emergence in early 1980's, HIV/AIDS remains a global health problem of unmatched dimensions. It has caused millions of death globally and has led to deep demographic changes mainly in most heavily affected countries. Voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT) is one of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs. However, utilization of these services has been reported to be low mainly among adult men even though they are yet the key decision makers both at home, at the workplace, in the parliament as well as at religious institutions. The book presents the prevalence and factors associated with voluntary HIV counselling and testing services utilization among adult men (aged 15-59 years) in Ethiopia. This book can be interesting for health professionals, concerned government bodies, HIV/AIDS prevention activists as well students.

The main topic of this book is quantum mechanics, as the title indicates. It specifically targets those topics within quantum mechanics that are needed to understand modern semiconductor theory. It begins with the motivation for quantum mechanics and why classical physics fails when dealing with very small particles and small dimensions. Two key features make this book different from others on quantum mechanics, even those usually intended for engineers: First, after a brief introduction, much of the development is through Fourier theory, a topic that is at the heart of most electrical engineering theory. In this manner, the explanation of the quantum mechanics is rooted in the mathematics familiar to every electrical engineer. Secondly, beginning with the first chapter, simple computer programs in MATLAB are used to illustrate the principles. The programs can easily be copied and used by the reader to do the exercises at the end of the chapters or to just become more familiar with the material. Many of the figures in this book have a title across the top. This title is the name of the MATLAB program that was used to generate that figure. These programs are available to the reader. Appendix D lists all the programs, and they are also downloadable at http://booksupport.wiley.com

Many books have been written about human resources. These books usually explain theory or focus on a certain topic. Human resources is a working field, and I believe it is very hard to put theory into practice. External factors, as well as administrative understanding and perspective, generally move human resources applications away from theory. Companies often define human resources under their corporate structure as secondary or other management. Although this situation is different in some of companies, the common approach in the sector takes this direction. Any manager who deals with humans should understand human resources to manage performance better. In this book, I try to show how to achieve that from a human resources and management perspective.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: cum laude, Sport Academy Cologne (Institut für Sportökonomie und Sportmanagement), language: English, abstract: The study examines the question why some members utilitze their fitness club membership only little. This behaviour seems to be odd under microeconomic theory assuming human beings to maximize profits. An estimated 30% of fitness club members in Germany utilize their membership rarely but still do not intend to cancel despite ongoing monthly fees. In order to answer the question of the thesis, utility functions are employed embedding not only traditional economic factors such as money and time but also variables from social sciences, particularly from motivation theory and sport science. Further, recent findings from flat rate effects are elaborated whether to have an impact on non-attendance behaviour. The work adds to a young field in economics, namely to behavioural economics. Economic studies so far predominantly examined on consumption behaviour and the quantity thereof but not on possible utility of non-consumption behaviour. The examination is not only interesting from a theoretical perspective, it also gives practical implications and recommendations to fitness club managers and fitness club consumers. Having insight into determinants of non-consumption behaviour might help fitness club managers to identify customers who attend infrequently but pa...

This study examined the literate products and practices of children at an after school computer club known as Club Proteo. The participants in this study were children at a local after school computer club for children whose ages ranged from 5 to 12 years old. The analysis was grounded on a cultural historical activity theory (CHAT), coupled with a New Literacies Study (NLS) approach to literacy. I used an ethnographic approach (Spradley, 1980) to gather and analyze data regarding the participants' literate practices and the literate products over the course of one academic year (September 2001 through June 2002). Over these nine-months, 567 children's writing products and 719 undergraduate fieldnotes were collected. Results of the study bring to light the magnitude and range of literate practices and products at Club Proteo as tied to the larger social structure and practices of the club during the target year. Also, results suggest the importance of adult roles in children's in writing. This study offers a paradigm for further examination of writing at Club Proteo and at other after school environments.

Topological Foundations of Electromagnetism seeks a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of electromagnetism; and marshals the evidence that in certain precisely defined topological conditions, electromagnetic theory (Maxwell's theory) must be extended or generalized in order to provide an explanation and understanding of, until now, unusual electromagnetic phenomena. Key to this generalization is an understanding of the circumstances under which the so-called A potential fields have physical effects. Basic to the approach taken is that the topological composition of electromagnetic fields is the fundamental conditioner of the dynamics of these fields. The treatment of electromagnetism from, first, a topological perspective, continuing through group theory and gauge theory, to a differential calculus description is a major thread of the book. Suggestions for potential new technologies based on this new understanding and approach to conditional electromagnetism are also given.

It has been said by many scientists that we may need to look at the string-theory problem with a fresh perspective or find new ways of thinking to resolve its challenges. Let’s have a little fun with open minds and a new way of looking into reality with our imaginations turned on as we discuss possible new solutions to resolving the string-theory challenges.Exercising the mind is one way to look into things that are out of the reach of direct experimentation. Einstein utilized the thought experiments to revolutionize modern physics by means of imagination, insight, and logic. This discussion proceeds in a language that anyone can follow, regardless of background. This is an intuitive discussion, with respect to known and accepted foundational science principles, focused on solving the string-theory challenges.

In the short but tempestuous life of the nebulous domain of writing named theory, it has been accused in a plethora of occasions for rambling away and failing to respond to pragmatic problems found in the domains of the real, the social or the political. Setting out to question these accusations by examining the state(s) and place(s) of theory and the proximity of such locations to other fields of research, Under the fridge's light reveals the cracks in the presumptions of an existing kinship between theory and the real. Having done away with the imperative of a responsive or a reflective theory, a quest begins for a theory frivolity and of disengagement from the 'real' or the 'social'. A kind of theory that refrains from relocating itself in praxis, and yet it rambles in imaginative terrains, maintaining a theoretical perspective within the parameters of theorizing rather than theoretically responding to applied disciplines. In other words, a superflexible mechanism that enables the synthesis of disproportionate perceptions of scale; a theory of the jouissance of misinterpretation and the pleasure of misconstruction.

The corporate governance attributes include (i) the board of directors’ size, (ii) the independence of the board, (iii) the separation between the position of chairman of the board of directors and CEO, (iv) the audit firm, (v) the profitability of the company and (vi) the concentration of the company's capital. Other attributes examined include: the size of the firm, the company's financial leverage and the number of branches. To measure voluntary disclosure, a disclosure index including 80 items was applied to the annual reports of (15) Jordanian banks listed in the ASE. A multiple regression model was employed and the results showed that, on average a bank disclosed 59.52% of the items included in the voluntary disclosure index. In addition, the results indicated that there was no relationship between voluntary disclosure and corporate governance which was measured by the above six mentioned variables.

A volume in Evaluation and SocietySeries Editors, Jennifer C. Greene, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignand Stewart I. Donaldson, Claremont Graduate UniversityRacial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity has become of global importance in places where many never wouldhave imagined. Increasing diversity in the U.S., Europe, Africa, New Zealand, and Asia strongly suggests that a homogeneity-based focus is rapidly becoming an historical artifact. Therefore, culturally responsive evaluation (CRE)should no longer be viewed as a luxury or an option in our work as evaluators. The continued amplification of racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity and awareness among the populations of the U.S. and other western nationsinsists that social science researchers and evaluators inextricably engage culturally responsive approaches in their work.It is unacceptable for most mainstream university evaluation programs, philanthropic agencies, training institutes sponsoredby federal agencies, professional associations, and other entities to promote professional evaluation practices thatdo not attend to CRE. Our global demographics are a reality that can be appropriately described and studied within thecontext of complexity theory and theory of change (e.g., Stewart, 1991; Battram, 1999). And this perspective requires a distinct shift from "simple" linear cause-effectmodels and reductionist thinking to include more holistic and culturally responsive approaches. The d...

This study addresses these and other questions in the context of analyzing the determinants of the cost of equity capital for Swiss firms. The relation between voluntary disclosure quality and cost of equity capital is widely known to be affected by self-selection. Potential endogeneity bias is controlled for by adopting a two-stage least squares approach in a cross-sectional setting. Voluntary disclosure quality is proxied by the annual reports disclosure scores for a well-diversified sample of Swiss firms as developed by the Department of Banking and Finance of the University of Zurich. Further, an ex-ante cost of capital metric derived from the dividend discount model is used in this study. Empirical evidence shows that the association between voluntary disclosure quality and cost of equity differs with a firm's stock listing history. While the relation is predicted to be negative for firms at the IPO stage, it is likely reversed at some point in a firm's stock listing history. These results suggest that analysts' information processing activities negatively moderate the impact of voluntary di...

The present research explores the role of generalized uncertainty inequalities in the theory of quantum gravity. Motivated from the noncommutative nature of string theory, we show that there exists an ultraviolet/ infrared mixing dependent function. From the perspective of higher derivative stringy corrections, the uncertainty principle arises as the analyticity condition of a complex function. For a given ultraviolet cutoff, this observation non-trivially modifies the algebra of quantum observables. With the postulate that Planck length is the minimal length scale in nature, our analysis is in accordance with T-duality symmetry and the existence of both the maximum and minimum length scales. Given a finite size universe, we find that the uncertainty inequalities do exist in any quantum theory. Both the Regge behavior of string spectrum and the black hole horizon area quantization are natural consequences. The role of the generalized uncertainty principle is discussed towards the effects of quantum gravity, short distance geometries, Fourier transformation, distribution theory, discretization of spacetime and thus the perspective for the geometric origin of M-theory.

Research on health involves evaluating the disparities that are systematically associated with the experience of risk, including genetic and physiological variation, environmental exposure to poor nutrition and disease, and social marginalization. This volume provides a unique perspective - a comparative approach to the analysis of health disparities and human adaptability - and specifically focuses on the pathways that lead to unequal health outcomes. From an explicitly anthropological perspective situated in the practice and theory of biosocial studies, this book combines theoretical rigor with more applied and practice-oriented approaches and critically examines infectious and chronic diseases, reproduction, and nutrition.

Dystopia and Education: Insights into Theory, Praxis, and Policy in an age of Utopia Gone Wrong providesan as-of-yet unexplored critical perspective for examining contemporary educational theory, praxis, andpolicy with particular reference to the current state of dehumanizing and often oppressive policy andpractices that have come to demarcate the era of NCLB and RTT. The authors in this collection employdystopian themes found in literature, film, visual art, and video games as the lens for that critical inquiry. Assuch Dystopia and Education: Insights into Theory, Praxis, and Policy is an essential contribution to thephilosophical/critical tradition in educational scholarship. It is especially valuable because the inquiryundertaken is from a new perspective-one that will extend the critical tradition into a yet unexplored arena.Given the educational climate established by NCLB and RTT, this collection is especially important to the ongoing critical analysis of such policymandates. There is also a significantly important timeliness to this book given NCLB's utopian expectation of universal academic proficiency amongAmerican schoolchildren by the year 2014: as educators race to achieve such a noble yet naïve goal, this collection of essays examines the educationalenvironment that has been enacted to achieve such ends, and describes our current state as a utopia-gone wrong.

Explore the foundations and modern applications of Galois theory Galois theory is widely regarded as one of the most elegant areas of mathematics. A Classical Introduction to Galois Theory develops the topic from a historical perspective, with an emphasis on the solvability of polynomials by radicals. The book provides a gradual transition from the computational methods typical of early literature on the subject to the more abstract approach that characterizes most contemporary expositions. The author provides an easily-accessible presentation of fundamental notions such as roots of unity, minimal polynomials, primitive elements, radical extensions, fixed fields, groups of automorphisms, and solvable series. As a result, their role in modern treatments of Galois theory is clearly illuminated for readers. Classical theorems by Abel, Galois, Gauss, Kronecker, Lagrange, and Ruffini are presented, and the power of Galois theory as both a theoretical and computational tool is illustrated through: A study of the solvability of polynomials of prime degree Development of the theory of periods of roots of unity Derivation of the classical formulas for solving general quadratic, cubic, and quartic polynomials by radicals Throughout the book, key theorems are proved in two ways, once using a classical approach and then again utilizing modern methods. Numerous worked examples showcase the discussed techniques, and background material on groups and fields is provided, supplying readers with a self-contained discussion of the topic. A Classical Introduction to Galois Theory is an excellent resource for courses on abstract algebra at the upper-undergraduate level. The book is also appealing to anyone interested in understanding the origins of Galois theory, why it was created, and how it has evolved into the discipline it is today.

One of the greatest challenges in modern physics is to successfully unify general relativity and quantum mechanics. It is believed that if these two seemingly incompatible theories can be unified, then that theory will explain all of the known behavior in the universe. Physics in Theory outlines a unified theory in physics. What is the causal process of matter? What experiment provides empirical support for the unified theory? Is the unified theory a theory of everything? The following project answers these questions as it forwards a unified theory.

For many years, scientists have attempted to unite the four fundamental forces-the strong and weak nuclear forces, gravity, and electromagnetism. Many have tried uniting known theories, such as general relativity, with quantum mechanics, string theory, and even the standard model. These theories differ, and it seems difficult to find a link to connect them. In The Theory of Everything, Solved author and researcher Lawrence J. Wippler explains a new theory and provides an alternate understanding of the workings of the atom. He found that the four fundamental forces of nature can be united by just three particles-the north and south magnetic monopoles and a particle of matter that represents an element. He describes how these particles interact with each other and how they are able to create all forms of energy, including magnetism and gravity. Setting aside the presently known theories and laws of physics and attacking the problem from a different perspective, Wippler kept his assumptions simple when developing the three-particle theory. In The Theory of Everything, Solved Wippler shows that the north and south monopoles and a particle of matter are the building blocks of the universe.

Rent-to-Own housing programs offer a promising possibility that leverages public and private funds and encourages nonprofit and market cooperation, to develop home ownership and wealth accumulation opportunities for low-income residents while providing tools and local control for the revitalization process in distressed communities. Their success in existing programs gives hope that there may be a replicable solution available that develops affordable housing for those who need it most, that gives low-income families a chance to gain ground, and that provides community development corporations a tool for neighborhood revitalization. This book evaluates four such programs across the U.S. and finds that local factors play a strong role in determining what programs are appropriate, that programs must consider feasibility along with constraints, that existing programs demonstrate best practices designed to enhance the quality of life of the residents, and that preparing for owner readiness is a critical key in addition to providing a physical home for a family.

They both try to conceive how we understand each other, how we extract meaning from utterances and how we use language to affect people in a predictable way. In the following, a linguistic theory encounters a literary text. Relevance theory as a cognitive pragmatic concept meets Othello by William Shakespeare. The focus of this paper is the linguistic analysis of the so called "temptation scene", in which the villain Iago manipulates Othello skilfully and only by the use of language. The objective of the analysis is to gain a deeper understanding of how the means of communication can succeed in altering and manipulating the beliefs of an individual as it occurs in Othello. The analysis scrutinises Iago's utterances and communicative strategies as well as the underlying comprehension and inference processes by Othello. Relevance theory as an inferential model of human communication serves as a pragmatic framework for the analysis. The first part of this paper introduces Othello, the object of the examination. The play's plot, the characters and the temptation scene are briefly analysed from a literary perspective. In the following, th...

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: At the moment bonus programs are – alone or in combination with other instruments - one of the most successful and most often used marketing instruments in B2C markets, to retain customers by giving them a bonus for loyal behaviour. A typical bonus program of this kind is Payback. The problem is that still there is little known about why customers participate in bonus programs and that especially the crucial aspect rewards management (also bonus management) is the blind spot of the marketing theory on hand. On the background of high investments in bonus programs and their rewards on the one hand and unclear reasons for the different success of bonus sets on the other hand this is an unsatisfactory situation. The target is therefore to show how bonus programs work and how rewards management is integrated in such a bonus program. Furthermore it is the target to show how rewards management can contribute to program success, how a rewards concept has to be set up and which possibilities (e.g. type of reward) there are for setting up a successful bonus set. To reach this a compilation of the scattered but carefully selected information in marking literature, papers, articles and further sources also from non-economic ones like psychology, a systematization of the findings and drawing of conclusions from this gives a clearer picture and helps to give recommendations for setting up a successful rewards management. For backing up the findings the results of an...

Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

An interdisciplinary survey text on leadership theory grounded using critical perspectives Leadership Theory is designed specifically for use in undergraduate or graduate classrooms providing a comprehensive overview of essential theories informing the leadership studies knowledgebase. The text infuses critical perspectives in a developmental manner that guides readers through increasingly complex ways in which theory can be deconstructed and reconstructed to enhance practice and advance social justice. The book uses compelling examples, critically reflective questions, and multiple approaches to concept illustration to cultivate readers' abilities to engage as critical learners. At the heart of this are powerful counter-narratives offering a range of insights on the challenges and rewards of leadership. Narratives represent accomplished leaders from across a broad range of fields including Eboo Patel, Mary Morten, Felice Gorordo, and more. The facilitator's guide and instructor's website supplement this with case studies, sample syllabi, structured dialogues, and learning activities tied to each chapter. Leadership texts tend to limit application of theory to a singular disciplinary context, omit important ways in which research evolves the understanding of theory, and/or lack critical evaluation of theories which diminishes the ability to translate theory to practice. This book provides a much-needed solution to these issues. Learn the nature, origin, and evolution of specific theories Understand and apply leadership theories using critical perspectives Consider the influences of ethics and justice, social location, and globalization The rapid expansion of leadership programs has thrown the dearth of suitable primary texts into sharp relief. Instructors forced to cobble together course materials from multiple piecemeal sources will find their much-needed solution in Leadership Theory.
