Watershed prioritization is the ranking of different critical sub watersheds according to the order in which they have to be taken up for the treatment by soil and water conservation measures. A particular sub watershed may get top priority due to various reasons but often the intensity of land degradation is taken as the basis. In the absence of sediment yield data or ungauged watershed situations, geomorphologic parameters along with the satellite - based land use / land cover information of watershed may be helpful in prioritization of the sub watersheds. Quantitative geomorphologic analysis of a drainage basin is considered to be the most satisfactory method because it enables us to understand the relationship among different aspects of the drainage pattern of the basin and to make a comprehensive evaluation of different drainage basins developed in various geologic and climatic regimes. The latest advances in remote sensing technology have provided very useful methods of surveying, identifying, classifying and monitoring several forms of earth resources. Remote sensing data provide accurate, timely and real time information on various aspects of the watershed.

Rheology is fundamentally important in food manufacturing in two major senses. For example, if viscosity falls with time as a function of pH, this knowledge can be used to tell the customer that the viscosity can be followed with just a pH meter and a stopwatch. Rheological measurements have shown that once the pH has dropped 1 unit after 10 minutes, the viscosity has been halved. From the above study I see that National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (NREGS) has the great potential in enhancing food security and livelihood security of the rural poor. From this study I have seen that Public Distribution System is socially viable but it is not economically viable. Actual poor people will be the ultimate looser if this scheme is abolished completely. As it is a socially viable approach, we should not abolish it completely. Rather we have to remove the loopholes inherent in it. We can get better result if PDS is merged with employment schemes like NREGS. As NREGS is self targeting, the non poor people will be automatically opt out if it is merged with Public Distribution System.

The country is among the most severely food insecure countries of the world characterized by high reliance on food imports and international food aid. To that end, the study used the relevant polices and laws of Ethiopia and the pertinent WTO agreements as a primary sources. The copious literature on the area of the WTO AoA and its bearing on Food Security have been used as secondary sources. The most important findings of the study include: a) the subsidies commitments to be undertaken under the WTO AoA provide a sufficient policy space to continue the existing support programs which are part of the food security strategy of the country. Thus, the Subsidies, domestic or export, provisions of the WTO AoA does not hinder a sound food security policy; b) opening of borders by lowering tariffs, which seems very likely, will represent a threat to domestic food production unless higher bound rates are negotiated.

The Food Security (FS) status of most households in Nigeria has worsened, especially due to inadequate economic access to food, most especially in the rural areas. However, most studies in Nigeria have focused on either households' food demand or FS without establishing the linkage. Therefore, nexus between households' FS and food demand in Nigeria was investigated. Cross-sectional data from National Living Standard Survey (NLSS) for 2004 by National Bureau of Statistics were utilized. A total of 18,861 rural and urban households were used for the analysis. Variables used were households' socioeconomic characteristics, prices, quantity purchased and expenditure on Food. Data were analysed by sectors using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke and sequential probit regression models. Low Food Demand Food Insecure Group (LFDFIG) was 42.6% in RA, while High Food Demand Food Secure Group (HFDFSG) was 44.1% in UA. Food insecurity was found to be higher in the RA with majority entrapped in LFDFINSG. Access to land and having formal education ensure transition of households out of LFDFINSG in RA.Access to credit ensures households remained in HFDFSG in UA.

Although there is widespread food availability in urban areas across the Global South, it is not correlated with universal access to adequate amounts of nutritious foods. This report is based on a household survey conducted in 2015 in six low-income informal areas in Malawi’s capital city, where three-quarters of the population live in informal settlements. Understanding the dimensions of household food insecurity in these neighbourhoods is critical to sustainable and inclusive growth in Lilongwe. The survey findings provide a complementary perspective to the 2008 AFSUN survey conducted in Blantyre, which suggested a level of food security in urban Malawi that was probably more typical of peri-urban areas where many people farm. Given that informal settlements house most of Malawi’s urban residents, the Lilongwe research presents a serious public policy challenge for the country’s leaders. Poverty is a profound problem in Malawi’s rapidly expanding cities. Of particular concern is the poor quality of diets among residents of informal settlements. Precarity of income, reflected in the survey findings of frequent purchasing of staple foods and the need for food sellers to extend credit, appears to be a key driver of food insecurity in these communities. Economically inclusive growth, with better prospects for stable employment and protection for informal-sector workers, appears to be the surest route to improved urban food security in Malawi.

This research characterizes the watershed of the lake, looks at the contaminants and issues affecting it, evaluates remediation strategies currently being used and suggests alternative strategies based on ecological restoration design. Food insecurity in South Africa is not due to a shortage of food in the country but to inadequate access to food by poor individuals and households. Many people, who lost their jobs or can't find suitable jobs for various reasons, revert to street trading amongst others as a survival strategy. There is limited information on understanding the food security status and strategies used by street traders and their households in Durban. This study aimed at understanding the extent of food insecurity among street traders in Durban. The research was conducted with a sample of 120 people.Its findings confirmed that the income generated was R2000 per month at most, which in turn was to be shared with an average of 4 members of their respective households. Consequently, the majority of street traders' households were food insecure. Limited income compromised the quality of their food dominated by energy dense food; hence 59.2% suffered from lifestyle diseases. The study recommended more studies in this field, the extension of the Isipingo census to the entire municipality and the decriminalization of street trading by the municipality in order to improve their food security situation.

The surprisingly high rate of supermarket patronage in low-income areas of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital and largest city, is at odds with conventional wisdom that supermarkets in African cities are primarily patronized by middle and high-income residents and therefore target their neighbourhoods. What is happening in Namibia and other Southern African countries that make supermarkets so much more accessible to the urban poor? What are they buying at supermarkets and how frequently do they shop there? Further, what is the impact of supermarket expansion on informal food vendors? This report, which presents the findings from the South African Supermarkets in Growing African Cities project research in 2016-2017 in Windhoek, looks at the evidence and tries to answer these questions and others. The research and policy debate on the relationship between the supermarket revo- lution and food security is also discussed. Here, the issues include whether supermarket supply chains and procurement practices miti- gate rural food insecurity through providing new market opportunities for smallholder farmers; the impact of supermarkets on the food security and consumption patterns of residents of African cities; and the relationship between supermarket expansion and governance of the food system, particularly at the local level.
