This book argues for a prospective turn in ergonomics to challenge the established fields of strategic design (SD) and management. Its multi-disciplinary outlook builds upon concepts derived from Management, Innovation and Design Science. Differences, similarities and relationships between strategic design and prospective ergonomics are reviewed using existing theories and frameworks from design, ergonomics, and strategic and innovation management. To complement the theory, 12 cases have been analyzed in greater depth according to 4 main dimensions of analysis. Outcomes have shown that innovating through the Prospective Ergonomics (PE) approach is about finding the right balance between, on the one hand, meeting primary objectives such as profit maximization or solving the design problem, and on the other, acknowledging that human activity is bounded by rationality. This means that humans have diverse motives.

Three dimensions of the concept of equity are taken into consideration: the inequality in the financing of the health system, the inequality in the distribution of the state of good health, and, finally, the iniquity in the access to health care. Some methodological developments are presented as well as the results. In conclusion we observe that the state of good health does not depend strongly on income but that it exists some iniquity in the access to health services from specialists and that the income inequality is increasing due to the financing of the health system.

This study explores the inter-district variation in primary health care services and development in Balochistan. The study uses a set of twelve (12) PHC related indicators, out of them ten (10) are related to curative health care and two (2) indicators are selected covering the curative aspect of primary health care. By using 0-1 transformation value technique, the composite indexes are calculated for curative and preventive health care services. Districts are ranked as under developed, moderately developed, developed and less developed. There are found sharp inter-district variations in curative as well as preventive health care services in Balochistan. In order to promote the primary health care services in Balochistan the proposed recommendations include ensuring equitable provision of health professionals particularly in terms of female doctors, and decentralization of tertiary care services in order to promote primary health care services.

Social factors have a powerful influence on human health and longevity. Yet the social dimensions of health are often obscured in public discussions due to the overwhelming focus in health policy on medical care, individual-level risk factor research, and changing individual behaviours. Likewise, in philosophical approaches to health and social justice, the debates have largely focused on rationing problems in health care and on personal responsibility. However, a range of events over the past two decades such as the study of modern famines, the global experience of HIV/AIDS, the international women’s health movement, and the flourishing of social epidemiological research have drawn attention to the robust relationship between health and broad social arrangements. In Health Justice, Sridhar Venkatapuram takes up the problem of identifying what claims individuals have in regard to their health in modern societies and the globalized world. Recognizing the social bases of health and longevity, Venkatapuram extends the ‘Capabilities Approach’ of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum into the domain of health and health sciences. In so doing, he formulates an inter-disciplinary argument that draws on the natural and social sciences as well as debates around social justice to argue for every human being’s moral entitlement to a capability to be healthy. An ambitious integration of the health sciences and the Capabilities Approach, Health Justice aims to provide a concrete ethical grounding for the human right to health, while advancing the field of health policy and placing health at the centre of social justice theory. With a foreword by Sir Michael Marmot, chair of the WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health.

In The Patient Revolution, author Krisa Tailor—a noted expert in health care innovation and management—explores, through the lens of design thinking, how information technology will take health care into the experience economy. In the experience economy, patients will shift to being empowered consumers who are active participants in their own care. Tailor explores this shift by creating a vision for a newly designed health care system that's focused on both sickness and wellness, and is driven by data and analytics. The new system seamlessly integrates health into our daily lives, and delivers care so uniquely personalized that no two people are provided identical treatments. Connected through data, everyone across the health care ecosystem, including clinicians, insurers, and researchers, will be able to meet individuals wherever they are in their health journey to reach the ultimate goal of keeping people healthy. The patient revolution has just begun and an exciting journey awaits us. Praise for the patient revolution «A full 50% of the US population has at least one chronic disease that requires ongoing monitoring and treatment. Our current health care system is woefully inadequate in providing these individuals with the treatment and support they need. This disparity can only be addressed through empowering patients to better care for themselves and giving providers better tools to care for their patients. Both of those solutions will require the development and application of novel technologies. In Krisa Tailor's book The Patient Revolution, a blueprint is articulated for how this could be achieved, culminating in a vision for a learning health system within 10 years.» —Ricky Bloomfield, MD, Director, Mobile Technology Strategy; Assistant Professor, Duke Medicine «In The Patient Revolution, Krisa Tailor astutely points out that 80% of health is impacted by factors outside of the health care system. Amazon unfortunately knows more about our patients than we do. The prescriptive analytics she describes will allow health care providers to use big data to optimize interventions at the level of the individual patient. The use of analytics will allow providers to improve quality, shape care coordination, and contain costs. Advanced analytics will lead to personalized care and ultimately empowered patients!» —Linda Butler, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer/Chief Medical Information Officer, Rex Healthcare «The Patient Revolution provides a practical roadmap on how the industry can capture value by making health and care more personalized, anticipatory, and intuitive to patient needs.» —Ash Damle, CEO, Lumiata «Excellent read. For me, health care represents a unique economy—one focused on technology, but requiring a deep understanding of humanity. Ms. Tailor begins the exploration of how we provide care via the concepts of design thinking, asking how we might redesign care with an eye toward changing the experience. She does an excellent job deconstructing this from the patient experience. I look forward to a hopeful follow-up directed at changing the provider culture.» —Alan Pitt, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Avizia «Whether you're a health care provider looking to gain an understanding of the health care landscape, a health data scientist, or a seasoned business pro, you'll come away with a deeper, nuanced understanding of today's evolving health care system with this book. Krisa Tailor ties together—in a comprehensive, unique way—the worlds of health care administration, clinical practice, design thinking, and business strategy and innovation.» —Steven Chan, MD, MBA, University of California, Davis

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Health Science, grade: Distinction, University of Leeds (Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development), course: Masters in Health Management, Planning and Policy, language: English, abstract: In recent years, the governance of the health system has become a key issue of discussion for international organisations such as the WHO, the WB, UNDP, USAID and the EC. Furthermore, they state that spending on health would not alone achieve the intended results in health without addressing governance. The District Health Administration (DHA), generally called the office of the Civil Surgeon in Bihar, India, is considered a bridging administrative unit from national and state government to the community at village level. Moreover, this is a full-bodied unit with management and the administrative power under the leadership of Chief Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon and Assistant Chief Medical Officer with various health programme officers and support staff. Although health service delivery is seen to have improved in Bihar in recent years, issues such as leadership, management, accountability and transparency would seen to be weak in the DHA.This study aims to recommend specific strategies to strengthen governance of the DHA in Bihar. In doing so, it first identifies and critically analyses the causes of poor governance of the DHA. Janis Powers Health Care. Meet the American Dream

The global community clamors for American innovation and ideas. But no one wants our health care system.Americans spend trillions of dollars on health care only to generate some of the worst health outcomes in the world. Addressing health care’s problems with incremental solutions cannot generate the transformational change that’s desperately needed. Janis Powers offers a visionary alternative—the Dream Plan.Powers advocates for a system rooted in the values of the American Dream: personal accountability, longitudinal goal-setting, and community support. Her proposal requires a complete decentralization of the current payment system, ostensibly eliminating both health insurance and Medicare while dramatically altering Medicaid. Some of the thought-provoking points in this rigorously researched book include:• Why health insurance will soon be obsolete• Why a longitudinal perspective on health is critical to improving outcomes and saving money• Why the private sector, not the government, must drive health care innovation• Why all Americans must brace for rationing in health care spendingThe Dream Plan elevates the role of preventative care, creates a more market-based economy for health care goods and services, and shifts more accountability for outcomes to the patient. Powers offers an ambitious plan that serves as the first step in the transformation of the American health care system.Janis Powers is a health care strategy consultant who lives in Austin, Texas.
