One of the greatest challenges of sustainable agricultural development is the inability of a country to meet its domestic food needs and provide surplus for export and future shocks, especially for a developing country like Nigeria. Agricultural production is thus essential for meeting domestic food demand, and generating broad-based growth necessary for rural development. Nigeria’s economy is agriculture-based, and agricultural production has the potential impact of improving rural welfare. This book presents an analysis of the concept, policy and impact of agricultural production in Nigeria. Data on agricultural inputs and production, real agricultural gross domestic product, foreign private investments in agriculture, agricultural budgets as well as infrastructural and industrial development indices were analysed against extant policy regimes. The book reveals that increase in agricultural production led to significant improvement in rural welfare in Nigeria. It further stresses the importance of the expansion of land area under irrigation in order to sustain agricultural production and boost rural welfare in Nigeria.

Very little information is available about the current status of the potential impact of soil degradation and whether the situation is worsening in all the States of northern Nigeria. However, it is now clear that the major factor explaining the severity and spatial distribution of soil degradation such as erosion and desertification in northern Nigeria is associated with human impact such as deforestation and mismanagement of land resources. Other factors includes overgrazing, use of mechanized equipment, deforestation and lack of government concern to protect the environment in the region, but few studies have been made on applied issues related to the physical and chemical processes including erosion, runoff and leaching. These problems are widely considered as a serious problem to agricultural production and its environmental consequences will remain an important issue during the 21st century. The research discovered that some of the cattle markets were demarcated with facilities such as convenience, shops and water supply. However, these are far from adequate. The researcher also discovered that there exists a lack lustre attitude of record keeping by the government and non - governmental agencies with regard to issues affecting cattle trade and the markets. The study recommends that facilities should be improved upon. Likewise, security should also be improved upon as large sums of money are carried to and from the markets. Major events should be recorded by the authorities concerned and be secured for posterity.

The accounting of our rural households is becoming more and more prevalent and common. In the new system of registration of agricultural households, where the commercial ones have a completely different treatment, this question becomes even more popular. Mission and purpose of accounting of agricultural enterprises is to collect data on the state and behavior of all the elements of the agricultural business system, and that turns them into information. Business events accounted for enterprises engaged in agricultural activities is much more specific compared to classic industrial, service and other companies, which is partly the result of specific agricultural production in general, but also the character of the individual, primarily property position (balance sheet assets) in agricultural companies that require specific accounting treatment. The agricultural sector is a key sector in the economic development of many countries, particularly less developed countries and countries in transition. Accounting information framework in the agricultural sector should be based on the provisions of International Accounting Standard - 41 (Agriculture).

This book discusses the possibility of exploring local alternatives by way of sourcing for colour-producing substances in parts of Nigeria, refining and putting them to use in stage scenery, costume and make-up. This study has ascertained that raw colour pigments are available in ample quantity in Nigeria, enough to sustain commercial colour production, and that the demand for colourants in Nigeria and the cost are high. This work should therefore be valuable to stakeholders in colour manufacturing, trade and usage - individuals, entrepreneurs, organizations and government who may wish to explore the opportunities in the colour-manufacturing sector for the sustenance and development of scenography and visual arts in Nigeria. Researchers studying artistic production materials, and those reviewing the social, economic and the cultural circumstances of art practice in Nigeria would find this work useful.

Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Gum arabic is a tree resin obtained from Acacia senegal, an endemic tree species to the African Sahel Zone. Recently, plantation cultivation of Acacia senegal has been introduced in Northern Nigeria and the 'modern' production of gum arabic is investigated by government institutions to promote future gum arabic production, alongside a thitherto predominant smallholder collection of gum arabic from so-called natural stands of Acacia senegal. The two ways of collecting or producing gum arabic - smallholder collection in natural stands and plantation cultivation of Acacia senegal - are compared referring to land and labour productivity. In contrast to the collection of gum arabic in natural stands, the production of gum arabic in plantation cultivation requires the implementation of several working steps that are not carried out in natural stands. Hence, the question is raised how these two ways of gum arabic production differ from each other and why the collection from natural stands is rather extensive in comparison to plantation cultivation. Therefore, the context of local livelihoods and the interaction of several actors in the drylands of North-Eastern Nigeria is taken into consideration to explain the collection of gum arabic in natural stands. These interactions are limited in plantation cultivation where gum arabic production efficiency and profitability is focussed.

Gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer Increasing agricultural production and food security remain key challenges for mankind. In order to meet global food demand, the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that production has to increase by 50% by 2050 and requires large investments. Agricultural insurance and financial instruments have been an integral part to advancing productivity and are becoming more important in increasingly globalized and specialized agricultural supply chains in the wake of potentially more frequent and severe natural disasters in today’s key producing markets. Underwriting, pricing and transferring agricultural risks is complex and requires a solid understanding of the production system, exposure, perils and the most suitable products, which vastly differ among developed and developing markets. In the last decade, new insurance schemes in emerging agricultural markets have greatly contributed to the large growth of the industry from a premium volume of US$10.1 billion (2006) to US$30.7 billion (2017). This growth is bound to continue as insurance penetration and exposure increase and new schemes are being developed. Agricultural (re)insurance has become a cornerstone of sovereign disaster risk financing frameworks. Agricultural Risk Transfer introduces the main concepts of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer that are discussed through industry case studies. It also discusses best industry practices for all main insurance products for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry risks including risk assessment, underwriting, pricing, modelling and loss adjustment. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 4.0, Atlantic International University (BUSINESS STUDIES AND ECONOMICS), course: Development Studies, language: English, abstract: Improved agricultural systems need management skills such as planning and coordination of activities. Undesirable practices such as unbalanced utilization of resources, poor timing of activities lead to poor performance in the agricultural sector. Dynamic scheduling of activities, proper factor combinations, have limited production processes and production potential. Unpredictability changes within the changing environment as witnessed by hazards, weather, resource failure among other factors necessitates the dynamic scheduling systems to allow high conditions of production performance. Lack of efficient processes in regard to resources and activities that are coherent within the prevailing circumstances has always led to supply shock which ultimately affects other areas such as the industrial sector. Viability of agricultural production requires appropriate management strategies and adopting appropriate practices so as to maintain and increase the profitability of production ventures in a sustainable manner.

This book focuses on the work of one of the leading African scholars on the land question and agrarian transformation in Africa—Sam Moyo. It offers a critical discussion, in conversation with Sam Moyo, of the land question and the response of African states. Since independence, African states have been trying to address the colonial legacy on land policy and governance. After six decades of formulating and implementing land reforms, most countries have not succeeded in decolonising approaches to land policy and the administrative framework. The book brings together the broader debates on the implications of decolonisation of Africa’s land policy. Through case studies from several African countries, the book offers an empirical analysis on land reforms and the emerging land relations, and how these affect land allocation and use, including agricultural production. Most of the chapters discuss how the unresolved land question in post-colonial Africa impacts on agricultural production and rural development broadly. The failure to decolonise colonial land policy and the imported tenure systems has left post-colonial African states dancing to two tunes, resulting in schizophrenic land and agrarian policies. The book demonstrates that the failure by African states to reconcile imported and indigenous land tenure systems and practices is evident in the deliberate denigration of customary tenure. It is also evident in the rising land inequality and the neglect of the agricultural sec...

The north of Iran is one of the main regions for agricultural production but the occurred precipitation is insufficient to meet wheat requirement. Consequently, supplemental irrigation is necessary for obtaining potential yield of wheat in rainfed areas. In addition, nitrogen fertilization can improve water use efficiency in such areas. Therefore, supplemental irrigation and nitrogen fertilization effects on production of winter wheat under rainfed climate condition were investigated in this book. Soil and water researchers, engineers and students can use findings of this study.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: A, Obafemi Awolowo University (Post Graduate), course: History, language: English, abstract: Since the arrival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at its shores via the great IMF debate of 1985, Nigerian leaders have learnt to demonise public enterprises, castigating them, facilitating their sales to cronies of government officials and using the channels of mass communication to impress upon the citizens that these enterprises are of no use. Today, the general wisdom is that the state should completely recede and that private ownership of the means of production is the only viable approach to efficient production of goods and services, economic growth and development. However, the same factors that led to the collapse of the public enterprises are also afflicting the privatisation exercise. In this paper, the practice of privatisation meant to promote private means of ownership and in turn increase the production capacity of every sector is critically examined. Focusing on the wave and sad experience of privatisation in a period of 2000-2012 which was riddled with corruption, nepotism, lack of good corporate governance and incompetent manpower in the country, the paper concludes that total privatisation of every sector will never solve the economic impasse of Nigeria.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Biologie - Ökologie, Note: 1,8, Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Biomass production for energy purposes on agricultural land competes with food production. This is a serious problem, considering limited availability of farmland, rising demand for varied food products, demand for more organic crop production resulting in considerably reduced yields per area and the need for more environmentally sound agricultural practices meeting long-term sustainability criteria. Residual land currently not used for agricultural production has been considered a promising resource, but in terms of potentials difficult to estimate for biomass for use in the energy sector. Biomass potentials associated with "green waste" from residual grasslands were assessed for Schwäbisch Hall County in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Roadside verges, conservation grasslands subject to low intensity use (landscape maintenance sites), riparian stretches along ditches and streams, and municipal green spaces (public lawns, parks and sports fields) were the area types considered. Data for biomass and biogas yields were obtained through sampling and the help of the Hohenheimer Biogasertragstests (HBT) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). These values were compared with available values from literature and based on the DLG-Futterwerttabelle (UNIVERSITÄT HOHENHEIM 1997) calculated with the help of the mo...

Tanzania economy depends on agriculture as its main stay, but still rural farmers suffer from poor road transport and high cost of transport of products to markets. Problems in transport sector affect agricultural production in two ways. Firstly, the time and energy spent on transport related activities reduce labour productivity because the transport charges have led the price of fertilizers to be very high, hence reduces the profits which labour could get. Secondly, increased market costs as a result of inadequate and poorly maintained roads that are passed on to farmers in terms of low farm -gate price. In many food-growing areas, crops are carried in many kilometers by head to the assembly markets or roadsides. Despite the efforts made by the government concerning road transport, still there is inadequate agricultural production in rural areas. Because of this structure of human settlement and production, road transport system assumes an extraordinarily important role in the economic development of an area. The study evaluates the impact of road transport on agricultural production. It was conducted at Mikese, Kiroka, Kinole and Mkambarani wards located in Morogoro District.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , course: Agricultural Economics, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to analyze the technical efficiency of sesame production in Humera area and to identify major factors that cause efficiency differentials of smallholder farmers. The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

During the past years, the agricultural sector in Bulgaria entered an important stage. The country is a member of the EU. This fact speeding up the adoption and application of the different CAP regulations. In its way of accession to the EU, the country becomes faced with the challenge to increase the effectiveness and competitive power of agricultural production. Most part of the existing agricultural farms are small-sized. They lack sufficient market information, good management and access to markets and credits. The main problems is how the agricultural producers can better themselves in the conditions of insufficient financial resources and limited access to the market. One possibility to reach this goal is to substitute the limited production factors for ones that are more accessible. Such relatively easily accessible factor is the people to join together in pursuing their common objectives. This can be achieved through establishment of organizations of agricultural producers, which however requires a certain level of social capital. Using case studies from Bulgarian agricultural organizations the author highlights key factors affecting producer organizations' success.

Productivity performance in the agriculture sector is critical to improvement in overall economic well-being in Ethiopia. Low availability of improved or hybrid seed, lack of seed multiplication capacity, low profitability and efficiency of fertilizer, lack of irrigation development, lack of transport infrastructure, inaccessibility of market and prevalence of land degradation, unfertile soil, overgrazing, deforestation and desertification are among the constraints to agricultural productivity during last period. However, in 2011 the sector grew by 9% driven by cereal production which reached a record high of 19.10 million tons in Ethiopia.

In general, it is also aimed at dependent and independent professionals in the public and private sectors of the economy and development community at large, with a view to providing them with the institutional memory they require to demonstrate their expertise on the job much better. To this end, the book offers the benefit of many years of experience in teaching, research, and community services, through a menu of topics for profitable reading about the inner mechanisms of the policy process for agricultural development of the country in real time. Herein is strenuously articulated the systematic outputs of disciplined hard work spanning three decades, from 1988 to 2018, including the last ten years of active engagements in policy advocacy outside the university system. The menu of nonexperimental writings provides information about the seemingly dry area of agricultural historiography of the country embedded in a series of analytical thoughts and expositions on performance of successive programs and projects for developing the agricultural economy.

This study is the outcome of a research work submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of M.A degree in History by the Department of History, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2012. The book is a critical study of colonial economy of Zaria Province under colonial domination with particular reference to Ikara District. The book identifies and examines the policies introduced by the colonial state aimed at distortion and destruction of the indigenous economy. This book argued and demonstrated that this was done by imposing colonial policies on land, labour, production, transport and taxation. These policies had the effect of forcing peasants to engage in export cash crop production in order to meet the need of the colonial state. However, the introduction of these policies and development of export cash crop production completely changed the nature of the pre-colonial economy from independent to dependent economy which subsequently resulted in total and complete distortion of indigenous cottage industries. The book should be of great interest to all those who want to understand the nature, operation and structures of colonial economy in Nigeria.

This book examines the traditional mechanisms for conflict resolution in Africa using Igboland in Nigeria as a case study. The seeming failure of modern methods of conflict resolution has reinforced the turn to traditional mechanisms as the people appear to have more confidence in extant methods of resolving conflicts. The conflict between Aguleri/Umuleri communities in Igboland justifies the use of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms giving the elusive quest for peace within the modern conflict resolution apparatus in the post colonial Nigerian State. In the final analysis after over 100 years of dispute, the book argues that it was through the traditional peace process initiated by the Umuada women group and discussion within the village assembly comprising of male folk and final consummation through oath-taking that led to the successful resolution of the conflict.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, University of Ibadan, course: Agricultural Economics, language: English, abstract: The demand for credit and its impact on the productivity of poultry enterprise was investigated in Cross River State. The Multinomial logit model was used to determine the factors affecting farmers demand and participation in credit market, be it formal or informal, or both institutions. Descriptive statistics was carried out for the socio-economic and enterprise characteristic, while the impact of the use of credit on the productivity of the farmers was ascertained using the Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function. Analyses of results from data collated through well structured questionnaires indicated that the factors that affects farmers credit demand and choice includes, socio-economic and enterprise characteristics, indicators from the credit history of the farmer, as well as institutional or policy-based characteristics.Socio-economic and enterprise characteristics such as educational level, gender, farm capacity, and household asset were significant factors that influenced participant choice of credit institution in the study area. Poultry training was also found to be statistically significant. The positive sign associated with training indicates the importance of an increase in the training level of poultry farmers. Again, farmers with high likelihood to economics of scale and increase output have high ...

Good land management strategies are known to play an important role in improving agricultural production. Fencing is such an example. This work looks at the contribution of fencing to agricultural production in semi-arid Kenya. The motivation of the work is that there is lack of empirical data that has evaluated the contribution of fence as a productive investment in Kenya.Fencing is treated as a productive input in the production function alongside capital, labour, land and land quality. Cross-sectional primary data is used to achieve the objectives of this work. The Cobb-Douglas (CD) specification is used in measuring the contribution of fence to production. The instrumental variable technique is applied to test for endogeneity of the fence variable. Technical efficiency is estimated and the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to achieve this. Fence is observed to improve production and the policy implication is that since fencing has led to a series of positive benefits, there is need for governments to recognize the positive impact of fence and empower those communities who would wish to fence their land.

Describes agricultural production risks and risk management approaches Covers risk transfer of production and financial risks through insurance and financial instruments Introduces modelling concepts for the main perils and key data sources that support risk transfer through indemnity- and index-based products Describes risk pricing and underwriting approaches for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry exposure in developed and developing agricultural systems Become familiar with risk transfer concepts to reinsurance and capital markets Get to know the current market landscape and main risk transfer products for individual producers, agribusinesses and governments through theory and comprehensive industry case studies Through Agricultural Risk Transfer, you’ll gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market solutions which will support better underwriting, more structured product development and improved risk transfer.
